D&AD New Blood Awards The back story Music is a powerful tool that can provide the perfect outlet for opinions, emotions, world views and even epitomise the political climate.

Some of the biggest social and political movements hold a music moment behind them, from Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s ‘Two Tribes’ fight against nuclear war, to Morrissey’s impassioned plea against the slaughter of animals in ‘Meat is Murder’, to Gwen Stefani’s remarks on sexism and stereotyping of the male-dominated music industry in ‘Just a Girl’.

Music artists will often use their platforms to speak a message, such as Stormzy’s ‘stab vest’ at Glastonbury as just one recent example.

2 Typographic Notes: The Empowerment of Music

At the heart of many of these music moments is a powerful lyric or visual that inspires its audience. How could you communicate this unique power of music through typography?

How to present your work Your solution can be presented in any language, though you will need to provide an English translation. Any accompanying explanatory statements must be in English, and you must clearly indicate any key features of your design, especially if it uses a non-Latin writing system.

The important stuff A typography-led, integrated graphic design campaign that uses Google Fonts, a library of 952 free licensed fonts. Though not a requirement, you may also consider the use of a variable font.

HMCT Background The Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography (HMCT) at ArtCenter College of Design was founded in 2015 in memory of Professor Leah Hoffmitz Milken, a renowned typographer, letterform designer, and esteemed faculty member at ArtCenter.

We found a view interesting cover design and one we felt that we could in-cooperate into our project is the die-cut cover design where there was another protective layer below it and the design has almost like a ‘3 dimension’ feeling to it.

Social Issue: Censorship

Internet filters can be installed by anyone who maintains a wireless network.

Parents can use them to restrict their children’s internet access, and businesses can use them to prevent their employees from being distracted at work. NCAC is most concerned with internet filters in public libraries and schools.

Internet filters are software that prevents users of a computer from accessing certain websites.

They are predominantly used to block content considered inappropriate for specific users.

Filters are widely used on public library and school computers.

The problem with filters is that many block access to content of legitimate interest to users, but which touches upon disfavored or controversial viewpoints on issues ranging from sexuality to marijuana to paganism. This means that users are often only able to access one side of important policy and ethical debates.

Focusing on people who do not have any opinion and to inform them to make their own judgment after understanding or digging into the topic in depth.

There are now more than 3.8 billion social media users around the world, representing 49 percent of the world’s total population.

Most social platforms don’t permit use by younger people though, so if we only consider people over the age of 13, the latest data reveal that 63 percent of ‘eligible’ audiences are already using social media.

The average user has an account on more than 8 different social media platforms, and spends an average of 2 hours and 24 minutes using social media each day. That figure varies considerably across cultures, however, with people in the Philippines spending close to 4 hours per day on social media, while people in Japan spend an average of just 45 minutes per day using social platforms.

Project Brief: Founded by a group of UCLA students in 1982, Outfest is the leading organization that promotes LGBTQ equality by sharing and promoting LGBTQ stories on screen.

Outfest discusses and celebrates the stories of LGBTQ lives by connecting diverse communities and populations. The Outfest film festival has been a gathering of queer films and filmmakers for over 35 years. Year after year, Outfest protects the queer identity and promotes equality for all by supporting LGBTQ cinema and the LGBTQ community.

Reflection From the typography, we were able to feel that the poster is almost like an alert. The formation of the typography symbolizes the Megaphone Speaker, shouting out the message that they have.

Every poster has a keyword that the designer was able to convey the message, Our favorite was the ‘CODE’ poster. A code is a system of words, letters, figures, or symbols used to represent others, especially for the purposes of secrecy. Just by a glance, we were able to understand it.

Alternative Ideas Explored Art Movement: Dadaism

Dadaism is an avantgarde intellectual movement that started around World War 1.

Although not at first an art movement,p60/61 it did influence art greatly for a time.

The movement was heavily influenced by the war in Europe. Its artists rejected modern capitalist society.

They used nonsense, and protest in their works.

Cut-Up Technique

The cut-up and the closely associated fold-in are the two main techniques:

Fold-in is the technique of taking two sheets of linear text (with the same linespacing), folding each sheet in half vertically and combining with the other, then reading across the resulting page, such as in The Third Mind. It is Burroughs and Gysin’s joint development.

Cut-up is performed by taking a finished and fully linear text and cutting it in pieces with a few or single words on each piece. The resulting pieces are then rearranged into a new text, such as in poems by Tristan Tzara as described in his short text, TO MAKE A DADAIST POEM.

Reflection We pretty much sticked with the same concept with the first draft but this time we tried out different layout, color and typeface just to play around with it, to see aesthetically which is we prefer better.

Reflection More changes made, we decided to lay the messages out on the right side, to get the point of view of the sender rather than the receiver and generally whenever people type a message it isn’t in capital letters, therefore we decided to just use small caps

Typography Chosen: Work Sans

36 “Work Sans� is a typeface based loosely on early Grotesques. The core of the fonts are optimized for on-screen medium-sized text usage but still can be used in print well. We want to use a Universal font to emphasize the idea of mathematical grid use in the design that makes the font most legible and brings harmonious means for structuring information, to present information clearly, and without any of the persuading influences of propaganda or commercial advertising.

A font that emphasizes cleanness, readability, and objectivity, and is simplified and optimised for screen resolutions and also covers multiple languages.

The type serve as a signifier to represent the concept and meaning.

We want our audience to be able to identified, connect and relate to the concept immediately.

We purposefully did not modify the typeface because our concept is all about authentic context. We want to maintain the true form of the font, much like a message should stay true, without any modifications.

39 Reflection We decided to go with Works Sans Medium after testing out various typeface.

We were very specific on the font we want therefore it looking pretty much the same, they are not much difference in each typeface, to each other. There were subtle things that we liked, work sans has the tail in their ‘L’ and it is also fuller than the rest of the fonts.

Step 1: Have people with the ability to influence to be the fire starter to kick this movement ahead by sharing the song, ‘the revolution will not be televised by Gil Scott-Heron’ that they have been modified to the issue they feel that there should be more discussion about.

Step 2: This would encourage their curious followers to research more about the topic they favorite influencer or even share the song and speak about what they personally believe in.

It creates a sharing platform where people shouldn’t be afraid on having their own belief and values. It creates buzz on these sensitive topics but unfortunate was never given any attention due to it being too ‘controversial’ for the society.

47 Reflection Red represents warning/error. This probably just bled into social consciousness over time and became the norm. It’s coded somehow in our minds.

Black & White is a universal color to have in any messaging interface design, this is for the viewers to not be confused or distracted by bright colours.

1. Background:

We live in a world where information flow drastically. Social media was created with the idea of sharing and expressing.

But sadly, there has been invisible, algorithmic editing of information flowing online. That leaves us to question what we consume online is truthful or has it been manipulated one-sided. It would be problematic when people fall into consuming the media blindly when what we see are not fully transparent.

The inspiration of the dictionary Every primary school student needs to learn how to use a dictionary from their first year, how to find each character accurately and quickly, I remember that I need to use radicals to search for the Chinese character, and when it comes to high school, English dictionary is my media to learn English enhanced words or phrases. That’s where I get the inspiration from, the dictionary is the best weapon to understand the meaning and the world behind each word, it’s the purest description of each word and phrase, using a dictionary as a metaphor, it’s because that we should develop and enrich the environment of freedom of speech when we are young, encouraging people to speak out bravely, daring to speak out the truth and opinion. An adult who is restricted and limited for a long time is hard to speak out, they are afraid to be attacked, disagreed, and censored out.

Reflection Overall, We’re proud to present this work to this significant creative event. We seek to create awareness, we hope to highlight the issue that those groups of people have faced, we want to create a better future which we know what we know. When one person isn’t enough to make changes, maybe we need a pack, a team, a group or even several troops. And there is how revolution comes alive.

This project opened my eyes on various things that I am not aware of. There are things that i personally think that its better for the general public to not know to avoid unnecessary chaos however there should be a place for people who wants to discuss about these sensitive topics, having it fully undisclosed would be bring more harm when people know the 100% truth.

We are creating this project to have a platform that give people both side of the picture since most people have only heard the argument from one side. It is easy to present truthful information but by omitting parts you don’t want people to see. You can sway people to your narrative.

We are bombarded with way to much information plus having different people telling this information often have an agenda both ways. So people should wonder if this people are telling the truth which will end up being more confusing.

With our own interpretations of the song, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, we saw the distance from the past and now. Having the internet and the rise of social media, nowadays television no longer was the main medium that people can get their information from, but the situation that people are in have not changed.

2020 started with a lot of challenges that got us thinking about what we can contribute as a creative person. This year, we were once again reminded that each day should be cherished but also we were put to acknowledge how big of an influence social media have. Now that we can access information with an instant, we would like to throw the question back to our audience, the listener and seek for their reflections on whether the information we access online is nothing but the truth.

It is controversial that certain restrictions serve as protection, but it has also taken away people’s freedom to access true information.

It will be problematic when people just consume the media blindly, everyone must learn to analyze the information they accessed. Our heart goes to the people who are limited under censorship.

Freedom of speech, we’re all free to speak anything as long as it doesn’t offend any individual and it’s not morally wrong. We want politics to be transparent to the people, we want the policy to be clear to the followers, we want the information to be accessed by the audiences. But this kind of freedom or this kind of human right may not be a norm for those who live in a different background.

It’s so interesting to ask ourselves, is what we know really what we know?

We start questioning about those second-hand pieces of information we found on the internet, social media, or even news, are those reporters telling the truth all the time? Yes, it could be easy for us to prove or verify a fact, but as I mentioned, it could be hard for those who live in a country where all the information is controlled by the central.

Studying the recent breaking news, we saw the Coronavirus outbreak in mainland China, some of them blame this on the government for covering up all the truth about this virus which leads to an uncontrollable situation during the Chinese New Years. People didn’t realize or even don’t know about the danger of the virus’s infectiousness. What if the truth can be exposed earlier, will this make anything different?

I believe that music is a powerful art form and it’s timeless.

When we decided to do this brief, I believed that in some ways, we have all been influenced by the power of music. Being able to express the emotions that we get from the music was our ultimate goal and it was a very interesting experience for all of us to work on a topic that we all felt close to.
