A PIANO PIECE ON THE SEA

Cruise Ship Space Design Based on Piano Music Project Tutor: Liu Tiejun Date: 10.2019-12.2019 Individual Work

01

Piano piece translation cruise ship this work is based on Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp minor. The rhythm, mood, and order of the piano music itself seeks the correlation of various elements and spaces and gives the musical elements a spatial form. This design hopes that the cruise space will be endowed with the rhythm of piano music and full of emotions, showing the continuity of music and the circulation of breath.

Nocturne in c-sharp Minor Op.posth repetition, morbidity, contemplation

Brightness, excitement, memory

pain, confusion, wandering

This work hopes to translate the abstract piano music (Nocturne in c-sharp Minor Op.posth) into space and express the change of emotions in the space with architectural language. Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp minor can be divided into three sections according to rhythm and mood. The first section is composed of a melody that appears multiple times in the movement. The left hand is composed of a large-span decomposed chord. The vibrato is added, which gives people the feeling of tactful, pensive, and pathological The theme of the second paragraph is varied, and the speed gradually increases, giving people a feeling of excitement and clarity; the third paragraph once again has a large-span scale, giving people a feeling of wandering and confusion.

Music Mhythm and Spatial Transformation

According to the emotions extracted from each section of the piano music, they are translated into architectural language and organized in space. That is to say, the first part of contemplative and morbid emotions are translated into space, and space is characterized by continuous and repetitive, and there is a process of constant change to openness in the space; the second part of the emotions becomes clear, and space is characterized by openness and strong interaction; The third part of the emotions is back to the main tone, and the wandering emotions can be spatially embodied as a closed loop of occlusion and flow of the line of sight.

The Material Research Center

Santa Monica Warehouse Renovation Project Tutor: Georgina Huljich Date: 2023 Fall(UCLA school work) Group Work Group Member: Qing Yin & Mingxi Cao 17

The material research center focuses on the exploration and implementation of lightweight construction materials, and showcases cutting-edge materials such as ETFE and bendable steel plates. This was also the expressed through the building’s double facade: elegant translucent ETFE covered by light steel bubbles. Situated on the existing site, the design seamlessly integrates the original warehouse structure, repurposing it as a public exhibition space. This preserved section acts as a focal point, around which the newly constructed research center wraps, offering panoramic views of the material exhibitions. 18

Botanical Garden Design

botanical program design based on column+ Project Tutor: Max Kuo Date: 2022 Spring (UCLA school work) Individual Work 23

The whole project revolves around the column. In columns plus, I used minimal surfaces, which create rooms, inside and outside. I combine them with the columns, try to make these columns different from each others. Some plants are placed inside the column, so they turn to have a shape, some are placed in other places inside the building, they are more free. I think the contrast would be interesting.

"WALL" Of Communication Boundary Space Design Of Campus In Urban Cities Project Tutor: Huang Yan Date: 2019 Group Work Group Member: Qing Yin, Lin Cao, Fangzhou Shi Role in Team: Design (1/3) Drawings(100%) We aim to transform the campus boundary from isolating to inclusive. Through disassembly and reconstruction, we create a continuous, interlaced texture that fosters communication between the campus and urban space. Our goal is to establish a multi-modal, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable boundary space.

Building Skin Design Program Research on one natural sysytem --Petals(on going program) Project Tutor: Julia Koerner Date: 2024 Research Studio(2024 fall) Individual Work Petals range in complexity, influenced by their structural intricacies and surface adaptations. Flowers' interaction with daylight is notable, as they adjust their opening based on sunlight exposure. Weather factors like humidity and temperature also play roles in their daily cycles. I focus on flowers that react to heat and light, which is a prevalent mechanism for their blooming. Light stimulates a growth process in the petals, leading to their opening, while the absence of light or less exposure causes them to close, mimicking a natural response to environmental changes. This mechanism of opening in response to light and heat has inspired the design of a building facade that similarly reacts to the climate, particularly sunlight exposure. The next phase involves devising a strategy to adapt to varying sunlight conditions, integrating nature's efficiency into architectural design.adding an additional layer of botanical elegance to the mask's design.

Affordable housing design

Long-term rental apartment design Project Tutor: Garrett Ricciardi Date: 2022 spring (UCLA school work) Individual Work 37

My focus on the dingbat's identity centers on the overhang created for parking by staggering the units above and below. This design results in an overhang for parking spaces, with the first floor's roof serving as a public area. Another key concept is the concealment of cars; by altering the orientation of each unit and positioning them in a circular arrangement side by side, the vehicles are kept out of view. The first floor features four small clusters, allowing for pedestrian pathways between them and access to upper levels. 38

BLOODY BALLAD

A Tribute to Quentin Tarantino’s Short Film Making Project Tutor: Liam Denhamer Date: 04.2023-06.2023 Individual Work(UCLA school work) Quentin Tarantino, a film industry legend known for his bold style, employs animation in "Kill Bill" to playfully distort violence, creating a cartoonish vibe. This technique serves as a buffer, emphasizing themes of war and revenge while providing a theatrical escape from harsh realities. Tarantino prioritizes theatricality over realism, turning films like "Kill Bill" into platforms for fantasy and play. In sound design, he skillfully toggles between realistic and stylistic tones during violent scenes, guiding the audience's perception. Tarantino's mastery extends to extreme close-ups, used for various purposes, conveying gravity, character dynamics, and aesthetic appeal. The story takes place in an abandoned church, a tense and dramatic confrontation unfolds between a man and a woman, marked by betrayal and anticipation. The man, with an unsettling smile, approaches the woman, revealing a pistol and hinting at hidden dangers, to which the woman responds with defiant smirks and threats. Their standoff escalates into a violent struggle, ending with the woman overpowering the man using a knife, her actions fueled by a sense of betrayal. As the man falls, the church's solemn silence returns, leaving the woman alone with the consequences of their fatal encounter.
