Affordable housing design

Long-term rental apartment design based on DINGBAT type research Project Tutor: Garrett Ricciardi Date: 2022 spring / 401 - Advanced Topics Studio Individual Work Location:Los Angeles I n t h e e x p l o r a t i o n o f t h e d i n g b a t i d e n t i t y, a p i v o t a l emphasis has been placed on the innovative integration of overhanging elements tailored for parking convenience. By strategically staggering upper and lower units, an overhanging structure is formed, providing practical parking space while giving the building a unique a e s t h e t i c . N o t a b l y, t h e f i r s t - f l o o r r o o f i s t r a n s f o r m e d i n t o a communal space, fostering community engagement. A distinctive concept involves concealing parked cars from view. Through a circular arrangement of units, four clusters are created on the first floor, allowing easy pedestrian movement between them. This not only optimizes space but also adds a layer of privacy by obscuring the view of parked vehicles. This innovative design redefines conventional urban living by combining functional parking solutions with an appealing and socially interactive environment.

Botanical Garden Design

botanical program design based on column+ Project Tutor: Max Kuo Date: 2022 Winter / 412 - Building Design Studio Individual Work Location:Los Angeles The whole project revolves around the column. In columns plus, I used minimal surfaces, which create rooms, inside and outside. I combine them with the columns, try to make these columns different from each others. Some plants are placed inside the column, so they turn to have a shape, some are placed in other places inside the building, they are more free. I think the contrast would be interesting.

A PIANO PIECE ON THE SEA

Cruise Ship Space Design Based on Piano Music Project Tutor: Liu Tiejun Date: 2020 Individual Work Piano piece translation cruise ship this work is based on Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp minor. The rhythm, mood, and order of the piano music itself seeks the correlation of various elements and spaces and gives the musical elements a spatial form. This design hopes that the cruise space will be endowed with the rhythm of piano music and full of emotions, showing the continuity of music and the circulation of breath.

The main function area includes various bars, restaurants, concert halls, cinemas, swimming pools, spas, and other entertainment areas. The cruise ship is a luxury cruise. The service team is famous. The picture shows a partial plan of the cruise ship's third floor, showing the complete layout and flow of a piano bar on the cruise ship. It is also the address chosen for this work.

This project aims to convey the essence of Chopin's Nocturn language, translating its abstract piano music into a spatial rhythm and mood, the composition evokes emotions ranging fr of wandering and confusion.

According to the emotions extracted from each section of the piano music, they are translated into architectural language and organized in space. That is to say, the first part of contemplative and morbid emotions are translated into space, and space is characterized by continuous and repetitive, and there is a process of constant change to openness in the space; the second part of the emotions becomes clear, and space is characterized by openness and strong interaction; The third part of the emotions is back to the main tone, and the wandering emotions can be spatially embodied as a closed loop of occlusion and flow of the line of sight.

THE MATERIAL RESEARCH CENTER santa monica warehouse renovation Project Tutor: Georgina Huljich Date: 2023 Spring / 415 - Comprehensive Studio Group Work Group Member: Qing Yin & Mingxi Cao Location:Los Angeles The material research center focuses on the exploration and implementation of lightweight construction materials, and showcases cutting-edge materials such as ETFE and bendable steel plates. This was also the expressed through the building’s double facade: elegant translucent ETFE covered by light steel bubbles. Situated on the existing site, the design seamlessly integrates the original warehouse structure, repurposing it as a public exhibition space. This preserved section acts as a focal point, around which the newly constructed research center wraps, offering panoramic views of the material exhibitions.

structure detail

Each bubble represents a programme of the research center and we organized those bubbles according to their relationship. The lobby was located on the second floor where visitors arrived through an escalator. All other space was placed at split-level and surrounded the concrete core. The private research space on the other leg with two floor basements were a more open space that labs adjacent to each facilities room. For the structure, we have different systems to support the entire building. The outer etfe is self supporting using the steel tube to hold the curtain wall. And for the bubble inner skin, it was prefabricated steel plate along with the steel profile. Every opening has thickening ring which have a specific shape projected in the ETFE connecting to the primary pipe system, the bubble also support the floor slab which is made by super lightweight steel deck, it also supported by the concrete core.

Hide And Seek

Playful Landscape Fun to move around Project Tutor: Yara Feghali Date: 2022 Fall / 413 - Building Design with Landscape Studio Group Work Group Member: Qing Yin & Qinyi Wu Location:Los Angeles For this landscape design plan, we express some natural images in hybrids, gravel, shallowflood, vegetation, tillage, and brine in graphic language, and then use our translation language to organize them into the site. Our main principle is to describe movement with density lines and points and vector lines. Our site plan is derived from a comprehensive diagram featuring a primary pathway that commences at one point and concludes at another. Secondary pathways branch off from the main route, with one section traversing an elevated outdoor garden, and another extending into the mountain, forming a tunnel that leads to a concealed garden within the mountain itself. Upon closer examination, you'll notice that half of the garden is nestled inside the mountain. The ramps, originating from various sections, constitute our tertiary pathways, providing visitors with the freedom to descend and explore the playful layout of our site. Additionally, spiral stairs are strategically placed for swift ground access. To e n h a n c e t h e v i s u a l a p p e a l o f o u r s i t e , w e h a v e incorporated linear short walls and step benches. In terms of landscaping, we prioritize the use of native plants, particularly succulents, known for their minimal water requirements. This choice aligns with our commitment to sustainable practices and adds a touch of ecological mindfulness to the overall design.
