DEDICATION

In deep appreciation of her buoyant spirit and her untiring service to others during her thirty-seven years at Winona State College, we dedicate this 1962 WENONAH to DR. JEAN TALBOT.

Both as a teacher and in her present position of Upper Division Coordinator, Dr. Talbot has devoted her life to that "ideal of free, public education for all" which she describes in her history of the college, published in the Centennial Year.

"Time present and time past Are both perhaps present in time future Seniors were particularly conscious of the truth of these lines by T. S. Eliot. As graduation approached, they faced many responsibilities: class pictures, homecoming variety show, practice teaching, job interviews, decisions. "Time past" ineluded vivid memories of four busy years: freshman fun and frustrations, ordeal by registration, courses passed and knowledge gained, clubs, sports, friendships. With an appropriate mixture of pride and humility, seniors looked ahead to "time future," prepared to meet the challenges of teaching, business, or further study.

HALFWAYTO THATGOAL

To the sophomores, it has been another enjoyable year filled with memorable events. They found themselves participating in more social and extra-curricular activities beside the many long hours of study and extra projects such as case studies and term papers. All of these add to the final reward a degree in a chosen profession.

Now that the end of another year has come, sophomores are halfway to that goal.

BEGINNING THAT LONG JOURNEY

An exciting new life awaits incoming freshmen. The events of college life are a composite of various activities studying, working, socializing, learning, observing, thinking. The freshmen at Winona State started the year with the "Beanie Orientation" including chores for upperclassmen, meeting new friends, and participating in the Freshmen dance where the Beanie King and Queen were crowned. They also joined in campus activities, such as sponsoring a float in the Homecoming Parade and decorating a hall in Somsen for Christmas.

Along with the work and fun, memories were made that will never be forgotten.

Freshmen officers Tom Zumberge, President; David Thaldorf, VicePresident; Paul Jensen, Treasurer; Donna Stead, Secretary, led their class to new and exciting experiences.

Baseball squad finishes

^

Despite the fact the Warriors won the NSCC (8-0), then defeated Culver-Stockton two straight in the best of three play-off series and then were defeated in the 16th inning of a National Tournament game at Sioux City, Iowa, the Warriors hope to better this 19-12 record in 1962. To help the Warriors do this Dr. McCown was greeted by 14 lettermen and good freshmen and transfer candidates. Returning from last year's championship squad is NAIA All Tournament member Chuck Zane who led the team with a .457 batting average. To back up Zane are six Warriors who bettered the .300 mark last season; Arlie Klinder, Gary Grob, Dick Gunderson, Jon Kosidowski, Lance Johnson, and Dean Rosenow. The leading pitchers returning from last year's squad are Chuck Weisbrod 7-2, Jon Kosidowski 3-4, Duane Mutsehler 1-1, and Dick Papenfuss 1-2. Othervaluable lettermen returning are Roger Risser, Lyle Papenfuss, Ron Ekker and Bob Leitzau.

The Warriors open their season on the road with games against Loras and Quincy College before returning home to entertain Whitewater, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the State U. of Iowa. The Warriors then open their quest for their second straight conference title by traveling to St. Cloud to open their 8 game conference schedule. The Warriors play non-conference opponent River Falls before returning home to play arch-rival Mankato. Then comes the long trip to Bemidji to face the Beavers before closing out at home against Loras College in a non-conference double header and against Moorhead in the final conference appearance for seniors Ron Ekker, Lance Johnson, Bob Lietzau, Dick Papenfuss, Gary Grob, Roger Risser and Larry Joyo.

The Winona State track team under Coach Bob Keister met a challenging season this spring. With several returning lettermen from last year's squad, the team tried to better its 1961 record which was highlighted with a second place in the Northern States College Conference.

During the 1961 season, the team was led by Marv Rouse, Dick Anderson, John Modjeski, and Harold Ferkingstad. Several outstanding freshmen, John Finnegan, Carl Grimes, Phil Michaeu, and Paul Blumentritt add the depth that was needed for a balanced squad.

Leading runners were co-captain John Finnegan, Larry Pontinen, co-captain Dick Anderson, Dennis Murphy, Dave Frank, Terry Foran and Kent Burleigh. Other members of the cross country squad but not major letter winners were Richard Schleicher, David Percival, Jim Grover and Ron Stolley. The Warriors won meets with Carleton, Wartburg, Iowa Teachers, Luther, U. of Dubuque, and River Falls before being tied by Loras and defeated by Mankato. The Warriors closed the successful season by defeating our downriver rival LaCrosse in the season's final meet. GRIDDERS FOUGHT HARD

AND FINALLY WON

Warriors' coaching staff discusses prospects for the season with the WSC cocaptains.

A veteran squad of football players with a few new candidates reported to head coach Molinari last August for the start of the 1961 football season. Losing some heartbreakers, the Warriors finished the season with 4 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. In the conference, they compiled 2 wins, 2 defeats, and 1 tie. The Warriors opened their season at home with a 120 victory over Stout State on Sept. 9. In their next game the Warriors suffered a heartbreaking 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Eau Claire Bluegolds.

In their first conference game on Sept. 30 the Warriors were stunned by a rugged Moorhead squad. The final count was Moorhead 19, Winona State 0. Next, W.S.C. and St. Cloud, engaged on the Huskies' field, battled to a scoreless tie. The following week, the Warriors, playing at home, fell before a strong Mankato Stateeleven by the score of 16-6. Winona's next two encounters were very successful. Our team dumped Bemidji 12-0 and the following week whipped Michigan Tech in this year's homecoming game 16-2.

In the final contest of the season the Warriors displayed their best offense of the year in romping over River Falls 31-7.

Throughout the season the Warriors scored seventy-seven points while holding their opponents to fifty. Although the Warriors finished fourth in the NSCC, Winona's defense was the strongest in the conference. Two outstanding all-conference gridders Gale Sprute and Dave Rislove were the 1961 football co-captains.

VARSITY BASKETBALL

Coach Robert Campbell, in his season at the helm of the Warrior Basketball team, broke even over the 22 game schedule. The Warriors, who had 8 returning lettermen, were led by Co-captains Ken Stellpflug and Jerry Goetz. The ballclub was hampered by injuries, the absence of a really big man, and adjustment to a different style of basketball. Ken Stellpflug led the club in scoring with 288 points, followed closely by sophomore Slats Papenfuss with 272.

Hopes for 1962-63 will rest on rhe shoulders of Slats Papenfuss, Arlie Klinderand Dick Papenfuss andwhatever help the reserves and freshmen can offer. The two Warriors who have completed their playing days at State and will be sorely missed next year are Ken Stellpflug and Jerry Goetz. Also graduating this spring is student manager Win Hellerud.

WINONA HOSTS NAIA NATIONAL

WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

Led by six returning lettermen. Coach Keister's wrestling team faced the toughest schedule ever encountered by a Warrior mat team. On the Warriors' schedule were meets with such outstanding teams as those from Bloomsburg State (Pa.), Lock Haven State (Pa.), Cornell U. (N.Y), Iowa State, Iowa State Teachers, and Northern Illinois. The team finished this schedule with a 5-8 record.

The matmen successfully defended their title in the 12th annual Carleton Invitational Wrestling Tournament and returned as "Champions" for the second consecutive year. This year, the squad was led by Co-captains Larry Willis and Jerry Wedemeier (N.A.I.A. heavyweight champ), Pat Flaherty, and Jerry Wilharm.

The highlight of this year's season was the National Wrestling Tournament which was held in Winona on March 16-17.

WSC TANKERS GAIN

VALUABLE EXPERIENCE

In the fourth year of competitive swimming at Winona State, Coach Voorhees' tankers won 6 meets and lost 4. Many good teams formed the core of a very tough schedule this year. The W.S.C. took on such powerhouses as NorthCentral (N.A.I.A. defending champions). Macalester, Grinnell, and Gustavus Adolfus.

The co-captains of the W.S.C. team were Larry Clingman and Jerry Miller. Other lettermen returning from the previous year were Richard Schleicher, Stuart Miller, Wayne Fatchett, James Hauser, Rollie Kratz, Ross Harry, Dave Percival, and Scott Baudhuin.Several promising newcomers, Ron Stolley, Terry Foran, Bill Lanning, and Paul Jenson, added strength to the team.

The enthusiasm and spirit of the group along with the skill and experience resulted in several victories. However, the tough competition kept the team from repeating its undefeated record of the previous year.

Sprute has been a mainstay of the Warriors' defensive unit for three years. In the 1960 season he was named to the N.A.I.A.'s Little All-American second team.

Sprute was a Warrior co-captain this season and despite an arm injury led the State defensive platoon to an eighth place finish among the nation's small college defensive units.

W CLUB HAS VERY SUCCESSFUL YEAR

Promoting interest and participation in both sport and social activities, the "W" Club is a letterman's organization whichrenders its athletic services to the college. "Homecoming" spelled success for the members of "W" Club this year as they captured first prize in the float competition, and they were the sponsors of the winning queen candidate, Kaye Parker. Besides Homecoming, the club operates the concession stand at home basketball games. They also sponsored a faculty vs, football team basketball game. The organization was under the leadership of Tom Keepers, president, and the other officers, Lance Johnson and Robert Wolf. Dr. McCown is the group's adviser.
