SIGMA TAU GAMMA

Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity is based on six principles. The principles of Value, Learning, Leadership, excellence, Benefit, and integrity. The principles of Sigma Tau Gamma provide the cornerstone upon which the fraternity exists. These principles will provide you with a firm foundation for the rest of your life.

Aside from the six principles of Sigma Tau Gamma, the fraternity offers something very special; friendship. The type of friendship found in Sigma Tau Gamma is a type of friendship you will not find anywhere else. It is strong, unique, close, and most of all long lasting.

The Beta Xi Chapter has been involved in the success of Winona State since May 7, 1960 when it became the 49th chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma National Fraternity. It was the first fraternity at Winona State and the first of the Minnesota state colleges.

Sig Tau’s participate in campus organizations and activities such as the Union Program Council (UP & Co.), Freshman Orientation, Intramural sports, Homecoming, and various other organizations Sig Tau’s are also involved in charitable projects such as the MDA Super Dance and the Senior Citizens Picnic.

AND THE TERMINOLOGY

ACTIVE a fully initiated member of a fraternity or sorority.

ALUMNUS an active member of a fraternity or sorority who leaves the collegiate chapter.

BID an official invitation to a rushee to pledge a fraternity or sorority.

CHAPTER the name given to a collegiate branch of a fraternity or sorority.

FRATERNITY a national organization for men based on mutual interest, friendship and assistance.

GREEK sorority and fraternity members.

INDEPENDENT a person who is not a member of a Greek organization.

INITIATION ritualistic ceremony

by which pledges receive full membership.

IFC Interfraternity Council, a representative governing body of all fraternities.

LEGACY a rushee whose parent, brother or sister was a Greek.

PANHELLENIC ASSO. —the association governing University sororities, designed to coordinate its member groups.

PLEDGE a student who has accepted the bid of a fraternity or sorority and who enters into a period of training to learn the history, traditions, and goals of the group.

PREFERENCE CARDS—a card a sorority rushee signs at the close of formal rush indicating her order of preference for the sororities from which she will accept bids.

QUOTA the number of pledges a sorority may have.

RUSH the time when an independent becomes acquainted with the Greek system on campus and its members.

RUSHEE a student who is registered for formal rush and is attending rush functions.

RUSH COUNSELOR —Panhellenic delegates from the individual chapters on campus who are trained to aid rushees. During rush, they will give advice, answer questions, and help you make your own decision about sorority membership.

SORORITY a group of girls banded together for educational and social purposes. It is a living experience because it is girls living and working together.
