Since we are all in this together, we might as well come up with solutions to this together as well! based on what we have learned, after a global pandemic, social unrest, a contentious election, a sputtering economy and so on. Where does one begin to start?

It is, one supposes, a small comfort that we are all dealing with similar issues.

Andrew Barker, CPH WSNLA President Cloud Garden Landscape Design Seattle As we come to the end of the year and start planning for the new one, it is a timehonored tradition to take stock of what has happened over the previous twelve months and make New Year’s resolutions to improve things in the future. In years past, I have resolved to lose weight, plan better, be more organized, be more patient, learn new skills, etc., etc. All based on a clear-eyed assessment of issues in my life that could stand some shaping up. Sound familiar? And though it can at times seem a bit silly, it is not always a futile exercise. One year I did end up losing a lot of weight, another year I learned to play guitar (somewhat!), and my diet has gotten better. Other resolutions have not been quite so successful. But it is always worthwhile to see the change of year as a great time to make a new start.

Now then, fast forwarding to the end of this hot mess, inside of a dumpster fire, inside of a train-wreck of a year that has been 2020, not even Nostradamus in 2019 could have predicted the onslaught of challenges individuals and businesses would be facing throughout the new year! Nor is it that easy to predict what is coming next, let alone make resolutions 4 - The B&B Magazine

But this is precisely where your membership in the WSNLA comes in so handy, with all the updates, networking and resources that are available to us as a result. Since we are all in this together, we might as well come up with solutions to this together as well! As our diverse businesses in the Washington state horticultural industry are finding and sharing new ways to adapt and thrive through the current challenging times.

Most of us have felt the economic impact of the restrictions during our growing season last spring and summer. It has often meant reinventing the way we do business, particularly in the retail and wholesale sides, where physical distancing, mask wearing, and other mandated restrictions have forced us to reconfigure our business space and routines. The hardest aspects of this are on the human side when we must reduce employee hours and contact with our fellow employees and customers.

This diminished social interaction and economic change takes a toll in both subtle and obvious ways. We definitely feel this strongly throughout the holiday season, where Zoom gatherings take the place of festive parties and it is a little harder to feel the traditional warmth and cheer of this time of the year.

The pandemic has brought unforeseen changes to the event calendar as well.

For example, consider the NW Flower and Garden Festival. Normally by now we would be well into the planning for our spaces, as vendors, display gardens, educational booths, volunteering, etc.

Not this year! It is hard to imagine, isn’t it, a February without those trips to the Convention Center for our annual gathering? The good news is that it is not going away forever, just being postponed until February 2022.

Our own WSNLA Annual Meeting and Celebration will be happening at the end of January but will be online instead of the great and fun gathering we look forward to every year. We will continue to have our yearly awards, but they will take the shape of video interviews with the recipients which will be viewable on YouTube. It is an ingenious innovation as a response to COVID distancing restrictions to be able to learn more in depth about each award winner online at our own convenience and have it available anytime in the future.

The ongoing work of the WSNLA, under the skillful leadership of Breanne and Holly, is continually finding ways to respond to the challenges that this pandemic and accompanying restrictions has thrown at us. Yet in some ways these changes have actually helped us to both clarify the mission of the WSNLA, as well as establishing viable and effective ways to cope with the physical and economic changes that the constantly changing restrictions have placed in our way.

Our physical office space in Federal Way has been greatly reduced, and Bree and Holly now do most of their work from home.

We have had no physical meetings since last spring, and all conferences and workshops are now continuing only online. We have also had to put the regularly scheduled ecoPRO and Certified Professional Horticulturalist Certifications on temporary hold. We are seeking to modify our procedures to be able to uphold our standards of excellence and fairness without the possibility of in-person interaction.

Though the board is not having the lengthy in-person meetings of the past, only shorter virtual meetings, but we have generated productive committees looking at dealing with social issues, education, and outreach to the community.

We have had a number of great online workshops and seminars this fall, on topics as diverse and compelling as native bees and native plants, using biologicals, assessing hazardous trees in urban landscapes, container design, and the vital topic of CONTINUNED ON NEXT PAGE.

Breanne Chavez WSNLA Executive Director There are a myriad of ways to reflect on 2020, but because I am an eternal optimist, one way I would like to remember 2020, is the year ideas came to fruition. With a solid foundation in place, the onslaught of a global pandemic accelerated the urgency to ramp up planned for innovation in WSNLA programs and services. I watched this occur throughout our industry as individual businesses adapted to restrictions, as well. As we move into 2021, I am excited to highlight WSNLA’s targeted approach to industry promotion, education and advocacy for 2021.

WSNLA is committed to promoting & connecting your business with customers. Over the past several years, WSNLA has invested in its online presence with improvements to GardenWashington.com (business to consumer) and development of FindPlantsPNW.com (business to business). With the absence of events to support our outreach with printed materials, this effort ramped up in 2020. Both will take center stage in our 2021 industry marketing efforts, with marketing dollars dedicated to reach their respective audiences of consumer and industry buyers.

WSNLA is dedicated to your professionalism and advancing the industry. The virtual WSNLA PROseries will continue to offer a wide variety of topics for you to grow your knowledge and fine tune your craft. Opportunities to achieve professional certification will be back, as well.

Behind the scenes the ecoPRO Steering & Technical Committees dedicated countless hours to thoughtfully consider how to best transition the ecoPRO Training & Exam online – a goal of the program since it’s inception. While work continues, this will be a reality in 2021. If you want to earn your Certified Professional Horticulturist certification, please know the CPH Committee is discussing options for providing opportunities for you to do so in 2021. Watch for more information on 2021 training dates to be announced.

We don’t yet know what may be included in this, but we expect it to focus on carbon.

There will also be a bill creating a low carbon fuel standard. It may include a carbon tax or cap and trade.

Heather Hansen WSNLA Lobbyist The election is over, and the 2021 legislative session is fast approaching. One Republican Senator from Tacoma and one Republican Representative from Whatcom county lost their seats to Democrats. One Democratic Senator and one Democratic Representative, both from southwest Washington, lost their seats to Republicans. That means the balance stays the same with Democrats in control of both houses and the Governor’s mansion.

Representative Brian Blake, who chaired the House Rural Development, Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee for many years, was one who lost his seat. We don’t yet know who will chair that committee or how it may be restructured.

Majority party leadership in both the House and the Senate have indicated they plan to focus on the budget, COVID response and equity issues including policing. Other issues may not be considered this session.

Of course, budget issues can include fee increases, carbon tax and many other strategies to increase state revenue.

Justice Steven Gonzalez wrote in the majority opinion. “This exclusion from overtime pay is unconstitutional because it violates our state constitution’s promise of equality under the law.” (Note that Justice Gonzalez is the new chief justice of the Washington Supreme Court.)

A Foundation Grows & Delivers Opportunity Gregory, Business Technology Manager Q&A with Elliot & Anna Paolozzi, CPH, Green Goods Buyer Watson’s Greenhouse & Nursery

Q: What platform are you using for your online storefront?

What do you like best about it? What challenges do you have with it?

EG: Shopify. I like the user interface and customization, the app is very useful, sometimes better than the desktop version. I use the app constantly on my phone when I’m out checking inventory or adding items. When we were desperate to get annuals online in the spring, we had multiple people using their phones to add items and it was very efficient.

Plenty of challenges with shopify from themes not working correctly to tax not calculating correctly. We had to create a tax collection and manually add every product so that when they were purchased the tax was overridden with WA tax rate.

Q: Does the platform integrate with your inventory? If not, what is your strategy for adding and updating plants and products?

EG: Shopify does not integrate so we had to manually check inventory for the last 7 months. This last month we finally got an integrated system called Accumula so now every product that has a specific SKU has the inventory being updated in real time.

We still have inventory issues with items that are generic SKU like Geranium 4”. Those items do not update inventory in real time and it is a big pain to track those manually :( Q: Thinking back to Spring 2020, walk us through some of your steps taken - from decision to launch to maintenance - of your online storefront.

EG: Well, I had already begun starting the online store on shopify a year or so before covid so I had the foundation of everything we needed to sell items online. We knew we needed to get as much spring products online as possible so we just started adding every single annual and vegetable to begin with. Once we started 8 - The B&B Magazine

selling tons of annuals online, we had to manually check inventory almost every day, which was very time consuming, but totally worth it. Next season we will have to figure out a better method to tracking inventory (which would be to have specific SKUs for everything) but we are not sure we will be able to do that for everything.

Q: How much staff did it take to serve your online storefront?

How many people were employed to launch? How many people were employed to maintain and serve orders? Was this their sole focus? Were their several individuals involved in one order, or did a sole employee handle an order?

AP: Staff required ranged from 2 to 6 people on any given day, but all new cashiers were trained to pull orders right off the bat.

Q: Reflecting back, what would you have done differently? Were there any unexpected positive outcomes?

EG: I would have created a guide book on how to add items to shopify (mobile and desktop guide) so that I could delegate those tasks to others without having to teach them directly. We have sent the guide out to multiple people now and it works great.

Pretty much the biggest thing I would do differently would be to create a system on how everything needs to be done from adding products, checking inventory, to fulfillment. Write it all down in a guide and delegate as much as I can free up my time for growing the online store rather than operating it. Positive outcomes were that the online store created a lot of work for people, so anyone who was working with online orders learned a ton about plants and where everything was in the store.

AP: Designated spots for curbside pick up, someone to man the curbside area and a phone so they could work on other things between customers.

We want to use the online store as a marketing tool as much as an avenue for sales.

Q: With regards to the impact to your bottom line, did the sales outweigh the inputs needed to maintain, manage and service orders via your online storefront?

EG: Sales by far outweighed the inputs needed to maintain. We did not have to hire anybody specifically for online orders. It just created a lot more work for people who already had their daily work. One huge bonus is that our store was technically open 24 hours a day. We would see sales come through at literally 3AM. Q: Looking forward, will you continue to offer and integrate your online storefront in your overall business & marketing plan?

EG: Yes, everything we do is now integrated into our online store.

From social media and email marketing to our google ads. We are trying to create the online experience to resemble the in store experience. Right now we are adding as much holiday decor as possible and curating our online catalog and landing pages to be Experience Holiday at Watsons. Almost every social media post or email that goes out will link directly to products we are selling online. We want to use the online store as a marketing tool as much as an avenue for sales.

Q: Now that online shopping has fully penetrated the nursery industry, how do you see this shaping our industry for the future?

EG: For retail stores I see this as a huge marketing tool for customers to browse through pages and pages of products online then they come in the store having a good idea of what they want. We will always want the option for online shopping to be available, but we would much rather them see the products online then come into the store to buy it. I can imagine the future online stores to be closely integrated with the retail storefront, so that customers can see the product online and have that link to a map of the store of where those products are located. Curbside & Online Sales

From Shutdown Restrictions to Future Opportunity

by Theresa Dreaney, Owner of Bremerton City Nursery As 2020 approached we were looking forward to celebrating the 25th anniversary of owning our nursery. Little did we know there were other plans in the works! Early in February as we saw the swell coming our way John said to me, “Would you rather have our family and friends around us, or money in the bank at the end of this?” That question helped us put our options in perspective and guided the choices we would make.

When the stay-at-home order was issued on March 23rd, we chose to close the nursery and build an online store nearly overnight. Even though we were deemed “essential,” it was too stressful trying to keep people safe and “socially distanced” within our limited footprint. We have four sons who took on the challenge with us. Our third son Matthew, along with his partner, led the charge by building the virtual storefront and teaching his mother how to become a database administrator/application developer. (Check out Ronny Chieng on YouTube, “The Most Excruciating Form of Torture,” if you think this was an easy task!) We were using Vend as our POS and WooCommerce as our online platform. The groundwork was laid, and our website and POS were in place. Now we needed to build a 10 - The B&B Magazine

store and put the parts together.

It took us two weeks to get the site working and loaded with enough products to open. We focused on vegetables, annuals, hanging baskets and organic soils. We loaded over 1000 SKUs, most with photos and brief descriptions. We launched on April 11th and offered delivery to our four local zip codes, with a $50.00 minimum order, a $10.00 delivery fee and an “optional” $10.00 processing fee to help offset the newly acquired expenses of running the site.

When we added curbside pickup two weeks later, we realized that most people paid the “optional” processing fee and allowed us to say we had “free” curbside pickup. We continued to operate virtually only for a total of six weeks before reopening to the public on Memorial Day weekend. The hours of work needed to accomplish this is hard to calculate and easy to underestimate. We did not hire anyone; in addition to his own full-time career in Bellevue, Matthew worked tirelessly to help us launch and maintain our site as we learned what we needed to do.

The mechanics of putting all of this in motion is where the rest of our sons, friends and family came into play. We had laid off all our employees in March and were now going to implement this new way of operating our business with “volunteers.” We continued to receive our inventory, keeping the plants on the grower racks and organizing by categories, which helped with the pulling of orders.

Vend tracked the inventory, and the receipts showed us how many of each item we still had in stock. When the stock dropped below our established limit it was automatically unpublished from the website. We had very few fulfillment issues while we were operating the online store. John and the boys handled the deliveries and organized the curbside pickups. I continued to add items and update inventory on the website.

We see the opportunities for online as our biggest source of revenue growth in the future. We plan to add a “ship” category & hire someone to help manage and promote the site.

Looking back, it is hard to imagine that we were able to pull this off. We sold vegetables, herbs, groundcovers, annuals, perennials, shrubs, soils, and even had our Mother’s Day basket sale online! Was it close to what we would have done had we been open? No, but it paid the bills and filled us with hope for the future. We received a PPP loan in May and brought our employees back for the reopening on Memorial Day weekend. When people realized they could shop in person, the web orders began to decline, although some people still wanted to do curbside pickup and continued to place their orders through the website. The transition from online to in-person saw the most fulfillment issues. It was difficult entering the same plant from multiple growers, and we often let Vend automatically generate a SKU. We continue to have our online store open for delivery and curbside. We see the opportunities for online as our biggest source of revenue growth in the future. We plan to add a “ship” category and hire someone to help manage and promote the site.

As I write this at the end of November, we are clawing our way back up to 2019 numbers, operating with reduced hours and a limited staff. We are surrounded by family and friends and we have money in the bank! I attribute this mostly to the support of our community. “Shop small” and “shop local” are no longer catch phrases, and we are grateful.
