A Word from

A Word From The Headmaster

the Headmaster

Dear Friends,

3

Westminster ninth-graders read "To Kill a Mockingbird" this summer, one of my alltime favorite novels. In it, Atticus, the father, delivers sage advice to his daughter, Scout, saying, “First of all if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”

Atticus was teaching his daughter about empathy, an incredibly valuable character trait, and one that we strive to instill in Westminster students. More particularly, we seek to have our students have greater knowledge, understanding and empathy for all people around the globe. I recently read an essay in the Christian Science Monitor by Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton, the former chair and vice chair of the 9/11 Commission. In their essay titled “Send more U.S. students abroad,” they wrote, “The US cannot conduct itself effectively in a competitive international environment when our most educated citizens lack minimal exposure to, and understanding of, the world beyond US borders. If we lack the ability to see ourselves as others see us [sounds like Atticus]. . . then we diminish our ability to influence and persuade foreign governments and world opinion. Ignorance of the world is a national liability. The 9/11 Commission wrote: ‘The United States should rebuild scholarship, exchange and library programs that reach out to young people and offer them knowledge and hope.’ ” So how do we do that at Westminster? We’ve already begun several initiatives to expose our students to a “world beyond US borders,” and we plan to do even more. We’re not only sending students abroad to places like France, Tanzania and the United Kingdom, but we’re also bringing the world to Westminster. Through our International Teacher-inResidence Program and International Student Program, Westminster students are rubbing shoulders with Cameroonians, Chinese,

Colombians, Germans, South Koreans and Tanzanians, to name a few. Both the international student program coordinator and director of student life provide leadership for these initiatives. Ultimately, we desire that Westminster students develop greater empathy for the people of the world so that they can truly love their neighbor as themselves, even if the neighbor is half a world away or right here at Westminster. We also desire that our students develop the cross-cultural competencies required for a 21st century world that is more connected and competitive than ever. Climbing into somebody’s skin and walking around in it will help us achieve these goals.

Warm regards,

Steve O’Neil

A New Era of Academics For the past seven years, the Middle and Upper School divisions have thrived under the leadership of Mr. Craig Johnson. However, growing enrollment coupled with varying needs of students at different stages of adolescence have created the necessity for two leaders to manage each division. This fall, Mr. Brian Case and Mr. Joey Menendez have taken the reins as our new Middle and Upper School principals, respectively. They have been tasked with the responsibility of creating two distinct divisions to better serve our students and families. “We want to create a climate and culture that is unique to our Middle School students as well as our Upper School students,” said Headmaster Steve O’Neil. “By creating distinct leadership for each division, we will be better suited to meet the individual needs of each age group.” To meet the facility needs of our growing divisions, a modular building was erected over the summer that houses Middle/Upper School classes and fine arts as well as Middle School administration. This building will serve in the interim as we await construction of permanent facilities to build out our campus master plan. “We want our buildings to reflect the quality of our educational programs,” said Mr. O’Neil. “Therefore, we need to build our educational programs as we prepare for new construction.” Who will lead the charge in building our educational programs? Mr. Johnson, in his new role as Westminster’s academic dean. With 25 years of experience at Westminster, our school could not ask for a better person to fill this newly created role. His first priority will be to ensure the academic strength of our school and provide the resources for students to meet or exceed our high academic standards. To do this, he will focus on improving the curriculum transitions between Lower, Middle and Upper School by analyzing our students’ academic data to make improvements to our programs. He also plans to establish a professional development system for our teachers and work with them on integrating a

biblical worldview into their subject matter. As the academic architect of Westminster, Mr. Johnson will be heavily relying on our principals to implement improvements to our educational programs. As the newest leaders on campus, Mr. Case and Mr. Menendez are up to the challenge of ushering our Middle and Upper School programs into a new era. Both men have the spiritual maturity and proven leadership abilities to succeed at the task, and we look forward to watching these two divisions within our school continue to flourish!

Meet our New Principals Brian Case Middle School Principal Brian Case joins us from Huntsville, Alabama, where he served as athletic director and coach at the Randolph School for the past six years. Previously, he taught middle school history and coached for 11 years at the McCallie School, his alma mater, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Mr. Case holds a bachelor’s degree from Furman University and a master’s degree from Georgia State University. He is married to Jamie, and they have three children: Caleb (seventh grade), Ruth Ann (fourth grade) and Hannah (first grade). Mr. Case is excited about transitioning to a role that will allow him to impact the daily lives of Middle School students. “In a faith-based school, kids are challenged in all arenas – spiritually, socially, mentally and physically,” he said. “As a school leader, you see the whole picture of educating the whole child and not just one piece.” He is also looking forward to being able to openly present the Gospel to children, families and coworkers. The top of his priority list for the new school year, however,

is building relationships with students, parents and faculty. “Just as Jesus built relationships to accomplish His mission, you have to recognize that you can’t do it all on your own,” said Mr. Case.

Joey Menendez Upper School Principal Joey Menendez received his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his master’s degree from Columbia University. Beginning in 2001, he served as the dean of students (fifth through 12th grades) as well as math teacher and coach at St. David's School in Raleigh, North Carolina, a school with a similar mission as Westminster. He is engaged to be married to Julie Ellis in January 2013. Feeling God’s calling to pursue a division head position, Mr. Menendez had no reservations about accepting the role as Upper School principal at Westminster. “Its mission encompasses everything that I believe in educating young people,” he said. “The mission causes us to constantly examine excellence as it pertains to education, as well as giving students an opportunity to truly live extraordinary lives.” His belief in Westminster’s ability to provide this opportunity for its students made the decision to move to Augusta a no-brainer. Since relocating in June, Mr. Menendez has received overwhelming support from our Westminster community and has been surprised and encouraged by how quickly he has been welcomed into the Wildcat family. As the school year begins, he looks forward to getting to know the Upper School students and helping develop their Christlike character. “Young people have an incredible amount of influence and can be great agents of change, and I believe in them,” he said.

Portrait Of A Graduate Earlier this year, Academic Dean Craig Johnson and Lower School Principal Sue Ames began work on a document that would envision what we want our students to embody when they graduate. The product of this vision is spelled out in a document entitled Portrait of a Graduate. This portrait serves as a focal point and reminder of Westminster’s mission “to glorify God by providing an excellent education that equips students to live extraordinary lives for Jesus Christ.” The following Portrait of a Graduate explains our vision of an “extraordinary” Westminster graduate. Westminster graduates understand the times and know what they should do. They seek Jesus Christ and follow His lead. With Christian minds, they critically think about the world in which they live and work. They serve and influence their community and the world. Westminster graduates move from the classroom to the athletic field and fine arts center with ease. They enjoy life, are not afraid to work hard and others seek their company. They listen carefully and communicate effectively. They appreciate beauty and the complexity of God’s creation. Westminster graduates work well with others but are unafraid to chart their own course. They value the insights and gifts of others and contribute to the strength of a team. Their relationships are marked by grace and mercy. They are willing to take risks because they are confident in God’s calling and purposes. Westminster graduates do the right thing even when no one is looking and even at personal cost. They live with integrity, act responsibly and respect others and God’s gift of creation. In light of eternity, they pursue justice with wisdom and humility. Westminster graduates, knowing they have not yet arrived, always seek improvement and strive to finish well. They are inspired lifelong learners who find solutions by asking good questions. They diligently hone their skills and effectively manage time. In all things, they pursue excellence for God’s glory.

bMeartt Gossage em I IRnteervm iew with Mr. Twenty-five years ago, Mr. Matt Gossage stepped on the scene as Westminster’s newest headmaster. From 1987 to 1994, he touched the lives of the students who passed through our beloved campus. This fall, he begins his seventh year as headmaster at Cannon School in Concord, North Carolina. We caught up with Mr. Gossage to find out what he remembers about his time at Westminster.

What was Westminster like when you began as headmaster 25 years ago? Westminster was just beginning to emerge in the Augusta community. There was great expectation that we were going to become a significant school, but also some anxiety that it would really happen. There were about 360 students back then with a solid Lower School program and an evolving Upper School program. Junior and senior class sizes were in the single digits, which really speaks to the commitment of the families to stick it out.

Did you serve any other roles in addition to headmaster? I taught English and a fine arts humanities class that wove together art, literature and music. I also coached the varsity basketball team and served as the head of the Upper School my first year.

What was your biggest surprise when you began working at Westminster? I learned in July that there was no schedule for Upper School classes or the students! That was certainly a once-in-alifetime experience for an English major trying to pull that together at the last minute.

Do you have a favorite memory of Westminster? The annual Fall Festival was one of my favorite activities. The campus was filled with people and energy, and I even sat in the dunking booth. Watching our soccer team compete against and finally beat the more established teams in the area was another highlight of my time at Westminster. I also fondly remember the deep, significant conversations I had with faculty and board members about how God was working in their lives.

What was your biggest accomplishment while at Westminster? Being hired as a headmaster at 33 years of age was an accomplishment in itself. I definitely received more than I gave during my tenure since I learned so much from those around me. I think God was able to use me, though, to help give the school its academic credibility. During that time, people learned not to question the academic excellence of Westminster.

What was the school’s biggest accomplishment while you were headmaster? Westminster receiving its initial Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accreditation was a huge accomplishment for our school. This accreditation finally gave us the noteworthiness in the community that we needed in order to grow our enrollment.

How has Westminster changed in the past 25 years? In 1987, we were watering the seeds of a school that has now become a deeply rooted institution in Augusta. Westminster today has a much stronger base and identity along with more accomplishments than it did 25 years ago.

What do you miss most about working at Westminster? My wife and I miss the incredible friendships with parents, teachers and staff, several of whom we continue to keep in touch with today. We also miss living in Augusta.

What advice would you give to current Westminster students? I would tell them to realize that what they have is singularly special. I look at the graduates from Westminster and what they do with their lives. They are such a testimony of the power of combining academic excellence with a solid spiritual base. You don’t need to be like someone else because who you are is important and special.

School News Fall 2012 Campus Changes & Online Map Our facilities staff, led by Mr. Eric Newbrey, worked very hard over the summer to expand our campus while maintaining its beauty. One of the first things you will notice when you arrive at the Middle/Upper School portion of campus is our new, temporary modular building (pictured below). Several rooms in the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools were also repurposed to meet the growing needs of our school. In an effort to relieve us from the extreme summer heat (which lasts more than just the summer), very generous donations were made to provide air conditioning in the Middle/Upper School gym. To view a map of campus and the new building numbers, click on the "Maps and Directions" link at the top of wsa.net.

Later that week, the Middle and Upper School began a new tradition in the form of a Honor Assembly. During this assembly, our students and faculty expressed a commitment to honor academic integrity both in and out of the classroom. God expects us all to be “men and women of character” and in doing so, bring honor to Him. To view a photo gallery of these two events, click the Flickr link on the bottom left-hand side of wsa.net.

Moms in Prayer (MIP), a weekly prayer group for Westminster mothers, began meeting for the academic year on Aug. 23. They pray at 8 a.m. each Thursday in the Academic Resource Center (ARC) conference room for Westminster children and our school. This is an open group and others are welcome to join. For more information, search "Moms in Prayer" on wsa.net.

Opening Convocation & Honor Assembly Our Opening Convocation ceremony on Monday, Aug. 10, was a beautiful testimony of students, faculty members and staff of all ages coming together under one roof to commit this school year to God and praise His name through song and worship. Our prefects chose this year’s theme, “Now Fear Not,” as a reminder that God is with us always and that we should be in a constant state of worship.

The Class of 2013 started off the year in a commanding fashion with the senior parade of cars, painting “Our House” on the Spirit Rock and wearing matching blue shirts. They also hung orange balloons in the shape of 13 from the goal net on the football field. Meanwhile, our younger students poured into their classrooms with big smiles on their faces and excitement for the year. While the students were becoming acclimated to their new teachers and schedules, parents attended the First Day Fellowship. This coffee reception hosted by the admissions and development offices was a great time to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

• providing a positive Christian role model • having completed at least five years on the faculty at Westminster Excerpts from each teacher's nomination describe why she is worthy of recognition:

Kim Barfield has made a significant impact on our early childhood program. Kim makes learning fun, and her students are constantly in motion as she teaches them using highly engaging and active methods. She encourages, stretches and challenges each of her students to learn and grow and believes each one of them is capable of greatness. Her enthusiasm for teaching is contagious, and she is always eager to share with other teachers what she is learning. Kim is also a great encourager to her colleagues. Both in the classroom and in her work with individual students, Regina Franklin is driven by her desire to see students love the Lord and His Word through the careful and rigorous study of literature. Westminster has been blessed with her leadership of the English department and through her thoughtful work, both as a writer and as one who serves the Lord partnering with her husband as they lead and serve at their church. Additionally, Regina has made very important contributions to student life through speaking at chapels and mentoring girls. Congratulations to you both! Thank you for caring deeply for our students’ hearts and for working tirelessly to ensure their education is exemplary.

Laurel Grace Bouye (’11) and Kelly McGahee (’12), both French students of Mrs. Lambert, spent about five weeks in France this summer immersing themselves in French language and culture. The McGahee family had hosted a student from France, Roxane Coelho, two summers ago, so the Coelho family offered to host Laurel Grace and Kelly. They live in

were also able to visit the Chapmans, a former Westminster family. Laurel Grace and Kelly are both studying French in college and plan to return to France one day. The trip was an enlightening experience, and they both have found a home away from home.

Orleans, France, in Loire Valley, known as the valley of castles. In order to learn the language better, their host family spoke to them only in French. Their host family also made sure they received the full “French experience” by visiting castles, cathedrals, art museums, local concerts in Paris, watching the Euro2012 and French Open along with many other things.

Haley Barinowski (’12), Mary Elizabeth Goodell (’12), Anna Hearon (’12), Drew McCartney (’12) and Catherine Zecha (’12) returned to Westminster’s campus to work with Westminster Summer Programs. These alumni worked with hundreds of students in camps ranging from academics to fine arts and sports to the general day camp, Camp Wildcat.

While in Europe, Laurel Grace and Kelly were able to visit two past Westminster exchange students, Jana Rosenberger and Jonas Samland, in Germany. The women

Westminster Welcomes New Board Members mr. Byron morris

mr. Will schafEr Dr. Eman KalDas-Bassali

Westminster Schools of Augusta is governed by a board of trustees. Each member serves a four-year term and rotates off after those years of service. New board members are added each year to replace those who rotate off and grow the depth of involvement the board is able to have. The trustees work with the headmaster and leadership team members to guide and direct the school for current students and future generations.

coming with the intention of enrolling our kids in Westminster,” she said. Although her children have graduated, God continues to lead Eman to stay involved with the school through being a member of the board of trustees. When asked why she is excited about this opportunity, she said, “Westminster has a special place in our hearts, and it made a difference in my kids’ lives. I hope I can pay back some of the grace it offered us.”

feels honored to be able to serve both the church and school in these positions.

Westminster welcomed three new board members this year. Find out more about them through the following biographies.

Mr. Byron Morris

A graduate of another Augusta school, Will credits Westminster’s Christ-centered focus as the reason his children are enrolled here instead of his alma mater. Being the parent of four Wildcats is enough to keep any man busy, but he has also found time to serve as the Booster Club representative for tennis on top of running a successful business. Now in his new role as a board member, Will looks forward to playing a part in the future of the school. He says, “I am excited about Westminster’s opportunity to reach the CSRA with a solid Christ-centered education, and the impact we can have for the Kingdom of God.”

Originally from Egypt, they first lived in California before moving to Augusta in 1991. God’s hand was clearly at work in bringing them to Westminster. “We got the name of First Presbyterian Church from our church in California, and we started

The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. Psalm 126:3

lEttEr from thE BoarD chairman DEar WEstminstEr familiEs anD friEnDs, Serving as the chairman of the board of trustees has been an honor and a privilege. I am proud to be a part of the Westminster community, and never more proud than when I look through this annual report and see the generosity so many have shown to our school. As you can see from the numbers below, we were once again on budget with our income matching expenses. We have attempted to show you the use of tuition dollars and the importance of gifts above and beyond tuition in continuing to serve our students well. The net tuition number you see represents tuition dollars and other auxiliary income such as Summer Programs, Sports Academy and After School Care. Tuition dollars make up only 91 percent of the education cost. I am grateful for the continued support of First Presbyterian Church and the 394 donors who contributed to the Westminster Fund last year to make up this difference.

$6,400,000 Dollars are rounded to the nearest thousand.

As you can see from the expense chart, it is costly to run a school. With salaries, benefits and instruction making up 73 percent of our expenses, your dollars are hard at work educating our students. We seek to be good stewards of our school’s finances. I am continually grateful to our current parents who give wholeheartedly to the Westminster Fund and past parents, alumni and other friends of the school who believe in our mission enough to make it a priority in their giving. We could not do it without you. I thank God for each of you and how you allow Him to use you to help provide an excellent education that equips students to live extraordinary lives for Jesus Christ.

A huge thank you to the following people and businesses who donated many hours of their expertise, in-kind gifts and monetary gifts to add the much needed air conditioning to our Middle/Upper School gym. Bridging the Generations What is the Bridge Campaign? The Bridge Campaign helps fulfill part of our strategic plan that says we will develop and implement a campus master plan to ensure that we have the necessary land and facilities to fulfill our mission, realize our vision and achieve our goals. Since current Middle and Upper School facilities have outlived their lifespan and do not provide adequately for expanding educational programs or increased enrollment, the board of trustees has worked tirelessly to approve a campus master plan and move toward making it a reality. What will be the focus of the Bridge Campaign? The campus master plan is a large undertaking and will be realized through many phases. We are embarking on this first phase with focus on additional property and a new academic building to house 240 Upper School (grades nine through 12) students. Through early gifts to the Bridge Campaign, we were able to meet part of this goal with the acquisition of nearly four acres of contiguous land on Wheeler Road.

What is the financial goal of the first phase of the Bridge Campaign?

How and when can I play a part in the Bridge Campaign?

Our goal is $6 million, which includes the purchase of the already acquired property and a new Upper School academic building. We rejoice over the generous gifts of over $2.2 million of the $6 million goal that have already been committed in the leadership phase.

• Pray for God’s provision and guidance as we embark on this phase of the campus master plan.

Why are we calling this the Bridge Campaign? We are thankful for the many who have sacrificed over the last 40 years to make Westminster the incredible school it is today. Our desire is to bridge Westminster’s past to its future and connect facilities to reflect the excellent education that is offered. The bridge serves as a reminder that our responsibility is to continue to look ahead and prepare for the future of the next generation. Psalm 145:4 says, “One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.” This is our challenge as we embark on this next chapter in Westminster’s history.

• Participate annually in the Westminster Fund since this fund provides the operating money needed to fund annual excellence. • Attend an informational meeting in October. • After making a gift or pledge to the Westminster Fund, prayerfully consider making a contribution to the Bridge Campaign. • Make a pledge by Nov. 30, 2012. To donate to the Bridge Campaign or for more information on the October meeting, please contact Carrie Brigham at 706-7315260 ext. 2334 or cbrigham@wsa.net.

Developing News list of donors can be found on page 24. And of course, I can't help but be excited about the financial commitments we have already received toward the first phase of our Bridge Campaign. With gifts and pledges of over $2.2 million toward our $6 million goal, we are off to a great start in realizing a new Upper School academic building.

Because there is so much to celebrate, it is hard to know where to begin. We reached our Westminster Fund goal of $300,000 again because of the generosity of our many donors. Parents, alumni, faculty, staff, grandparents and many other friends of Westminster showed their support of our school and its mission with gifts to the Westminster Fund. We had our broadest participation ever with 100 percent from our faculty and staff, 63 percent from our parents and seven percent from our alumni. These percentages are marked improvements over last year and in line with the National Association of Independent Schools’ averages for private day schools across the country. Gifts between $5 and $100 made up $12,600 of the $300,000 goal, showing that every gift truly counts regardless of the amount. The Westminster Fund is the foundation of giving to Westminster, and we will continue to need all our friends’ and families’ yearly support to help us fill the gap between tuition and the actual cost of education. Every student is impacted by your commitment to the Westminster Fund. We had additional donations to help meet a long time need for cooler air in the Middle/ Upper School gym. Since the construction of the gym in 1980, the warm months of the South have seemed even warmer. After years of fanning ourselves through sporting events, spring musicals and assemblies, we are now blessed to have a cooler, more comfortable environment to enjoy the many talents of our students. Thanks to those who came together to help make this dream a reality. A complete

After several years of prayerfully considering the needs of our student body, we now have a campus master plan for the future, added additional property to the campus and are calling on our families and friends to continue the legacy of preparing the next generation by being a part of this next step. Just as the families who 40 years ago sacrificed to start this school, we have the honor of doing the same through this season of growth by being a part of the Bridge Campaign. May we be the next generation who, as Psalm 145:5 encourages, "commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts." As we look forward to the future, we again want to turn our attention to those who have come before us who have laid the strong foundation upon which we now have the privilege of building. Join us for our 40th Anniversary Homecoming, October 26 and 27, as we continue to thank the Lord for all of you who make this school possible. Make your reservations today and be a part of this weekend. The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy!
