WINDOWS 2023

The Convocation service on Monday, August 22 was a truly special day for Westminster. To commemorate this momentous occasion, multiple founding trustees, many former board chairs, former heads of school, and employees who served at Westminster for more than 20 years were invited to attend Convocation and a special luncheon afterwards. These were the people who have shaped and molded our beloved Westminster into what it is today, and it was such an honor for me, as the new Head of School, to welcome all of these pillars of Westminster’s history back to our campus. The energy and excitement were palpable, and the Spirit of God was in our midst as we began our celebration of 50 years of God’s faithfulness to us.
There were many special moments that day, including Dr. John Oliver’s address and the opportunity for our entire student body to thank our school founders for their work 50 years ago. But none was more evocative than the moment we unveiled the newly founded David Hanks Legacy Scholarship in honor of Emeritus Board Member and long-time Westminster supporter Mr. David Hanks. The crowd rose to their feet with uproarious applause in support of the new scholarship that will be given in honor of David Hanks each year.
Mr. Hanks has been a proud ambassador of Westminster for decades, and it is our sincere honor to acknowledge his deep love, selfless support, and faithful service to our school with this scholarship fund. It is our hope that the traits we have all come to love and respect in Mr. Hanks will be remembered each year in the form of this scholarship. You’ll find out more about Mr. Hanks and the scholarship later
in this edition of Windows.
Westminster has much to be grateful for as we look back at the last 50 years, but we still have much, by God’s grace, to accomplish in the future. In an era when secular culture seems to be infiltrating all aspects of our lives, I want to assure you that Westminster is committed to not just maintain but to lead, with more fervor than EVER before, with our biblical world and life view always at the center of all we do. We have Gospel-centered goals for the discipleship of students’ hearts to be pursued and won for the cause of Christ. It truly is a great time to be a Westminster Wildcat. I am inspired by those who have joined us in our journey forward, as we build on what has already been started, and can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Dr. Shawn Brower Head of SchoolInclement weather threatened the weekend full of 50th anniversary festivities planned for the first weekend of October, but the Westminster faithful were not to be deterred!
A soggy homecoming football game on Friday night was graced by the evidence of God’s covenant with his people, a beautiful rainbow that arced across the field just before kickoff, then Saturday morning dawned clear and bright.
Families from near and far made their way to Westminster’s campus to reminisce over old times and see changes to the campus that have been made
since they attended as students. Memories and stories were shared as children had the opportunity to see where mom or dad spent so much time as a child.
One of the most popular activities of the day on campus was the alumni soccer game. Dr. Brower served as referee, and kids cheered on their fathers as good natured alumni battled it out on the pitch. The cornhole tournament was another popular choice.
Later that evening, more than 140 alumni and their spouses gathered in downtown Augusta on the rooftop deck of Sole restaurant. Every effort had
been made to locate beloved previous faculty members and request their attendance. It was a pleasure for alumni to spend time with teachers who shaped them, like Mike Merwin and Andy Menger. Conversation and stories of Westminster exploits, experiences, and adventures flowed freely.
While literally dampened, Homecoming Weekend was a wonderful reminder that Westminster is so much more than just a place to develop one’s mind for one short season of life. Lifetime friendships are made here.
On an evening when the phrase “raining cats and dogs” would not suffice--a rainfall record of 1.47” was set at Augusta’s Bush Field--nearly 400 brave souls would not be deterred from attending the 50th Anniversary Gala!
A few ladies wore rain boots with their cocktail attire and slipped into heels at the door, but the atmosphere at Pine Knoll Farms was warm and welcoming as parents, faculty, staff, alumni, board members, and other Westminster supporters came together to celebrate the wonderful things God has done over the first 50 years of Westminster’s story.
Led by Kathy Schafer and Katie Stewart Bazemore, the gala committee created a beautiful evening, with opportunities for reminiscing with old yearbooks and fun at the photo booth. The Windsor jewelry raffle provided a way to support the Westminster Fund, but the focus of the night was fellowship, not fundraising. The Mark Maund Band braved the gale in the tent, providing wonderful music, and the southern soul food themed tapas were a hit. Patty Blanton generously donated the Pine Knoll Farms venue, and it could not have been more perfect.
As Westminster alum and current parent Lindsay Bui reflected, “The Gala was a beautiful event bringing the past and present of Westminster’s influence and far-reaching effects together. It was like two of my worlds collided, with old friends, classmates, teammates, parents, and former teachers in the same room with current parents, faculty, and administration—all of whom share a deep love and desire to see Westminster continue to thrive and impact students’ lives for Christ the way it has for so many years. Not even the soggiest of evenings could keep those in attendance from celebrating such a momentous occasion.”
In 1998, the Westminster campus looked much different than it does today. Knox Hall was only a distant dream, but Pamplin Hall was getting underway. Groundbreaking was held in the fall of 1998 for the two-year construction project that would take the Lower School students out of Upper School buildings and “cottages” located on the practice field near the Upper School Gym and provide them with a brandnew self-contained building near the front of campus.
Mrs. Julia Joiner’s third grade class contributed a time capsule to the building project. The class worked together to plan what would go into the capsule, which was contained in a fivegallon plastic bucket. At the time, Mrs. Joiner said the class contributed a recent copy of the newspaper, a school directory, a Beanie Baby, a deflated soccer ball, a class picture signed by each student, and other items.
According to an interview with Becca (Wiggins) Overcast (‘09) in 2010, the time capsule was an important topic of conversation. “I remember planning the capsule and putting it into the ground. I also remember talking with friends about how old we would be and what we’d be doing when it was time to dig it up,” Mrs. Overcast said.
When the time came to dig up the time capsule for the 50th anniversary, the first challenge was in locating it. Patrick Duckworth of Duckworth Construction lent his expertise in that arena. Not knowing what would be found after 24 years in the ground, Dr. Brower chose a quiet weekend to have Duckworth come to campus with him and unearth the capsule.
It was a good call. Time and the earth had done their work on the bucket, and the items inside were wet and caked with mud. The newspaper was salvageable, once it dried, but the school directory and class picture were destroyed by the damage from the water. The items such as the Beanie Baby and soccer ball were unharmed, just dirty. But it was the other two items in the bucket, the ones that Brower had no idea were in there, that provided him just the message he was looking to share for this year’s Opening Convocation.
The first was a small diecast Volkswagen Bug with the message “Jesus Loves You” written on the side. It was coated with mud and rust. It brought to Brower’s mind the message in Isaiah 25:1, “Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your
name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago.”
During the Opening Convocation, Brower showed an image of the car after it came out of the bucked, observing, “The message remains true for us today that despite our dirt, rust, scars, wounds, and all other sorts of messes, we serve a Jesus who says, ‘I love you!’ This is the message that Mrs. Joiner has for us now, 22 years later. Jesus loves us. Students, you cannot leave here and get an upgrade, you will not find lasting satisfaction and fulfillment, you will spend your entire life chasing and in the end come up empty. Mrs. Joiner is standing in her glory with her Jesus and would tell you it’s true! He really does love us!”
Brower continued that there was an additional question that Mrs. Joiner was posing to us through the final item in the bucket, a small, seemingly handmade bracelet with a phrase in the height of its popularity: “WWJD - What Would Jesus Do? It’s not just a bracelet, it is the answer in a question to life’s purpose. You want to live a life of significance, meaning, and purpose? Seek the will of God and
His Righteousness and wait and see what else just might be added unto you! This now is the question for Westminster as we look to our next 50 years.”
Today the toy car and the bracelet hold places of honor in the trophy case in the Upper School Gym Lobby. The beautiful lessons from Mrs. Joiner live on in her family, her friends, and her students, spreading through the world as they share them with others. Now these lessons also live on in a new generation of Westminster students, who were able to hear them expressed thanks to the contents of an old, muddy bucket.
Veterans Day is a special occasion at Westminster Schools of Augusta. We take great pride in our military community, and we strive to honor them by acknowledging their service to our country and the sacrifices that they and their families make to keep us safe.
This year, we were honored to have retired Lt. Col. Allen Grinalds speak to us about his time as a pilot in the United States Marine Corps and as a Top Gun instructor. Grinalds and his wife, Mimi ’97, have six children. The oldest, Allen, Jr., graduated from Westminster this year, and the other five currently attend Westminster.
The Fall Festival is a favorite Westminster tradition. This year, expected inclement weather during Homecoming Weekend led to the rescheduling of the Fall Festival. It took place in the late afternoon and evening of Grandparents Day, which meant a full day of fun for many of our Westminster grandparents.
Our Middle School students love a challenge, so when asked to support the Golden Harvest Food Bank’s November Turkey Drive, they rose to the occasion. They collected an amazing 63 turkeys to support food-insecure families in the CSRA for Thanksgiving!
Our annual Thanksgiving Chapel was a wonderful celebration of togetherness and joy. The traditional Turkey Video remains a source of joy for students from PreK up to grade 12. It is truly special to hear
about blessings from our students, in their own words. While the faculty and staff always give a love offering to our service staff, this year we invited our greater community to contribute to that offering, and the outpouring of love was amazing. From beginning to end, lifting our voices in praise, every moment was a blessing.
In early February, Westminster was blessed to have Dr. Aaron Howard spend several days with our faculty, staff, and students. Dr. Howard shared a message of Christhonoring unity and diversity. His gospel-centered message focused on loving other image bearers through the transforming work of Jesus, first done on the cross, then in our hearts, so we might impact the lives of those around us.
Dr. Howard’s visit was exciting and uplifting. It was full of song, praise, and worship. It was also a challenge to our community to learn and grow together. We look forward to working with Dr. Howard again in the future!
In March, Westminster took on an all-school service project to provide 100 local students who experience food insecurity with 10 days worth of food so they would not be hungry over spring break. We put out
the call to our Westminster community for shelf stable foods to fill bags for these elementary school children to take home, and our community not only answered the call, they exceeded it.
The week before spring break, Middle and Upper School students packed 120 bags of food, which allowed us to also serve students whose need was slightly less dire. We had so much additional food that we filled two vehicles to stock the school’s pantry to meet future needs. We still had even more food with which to bless organizations that we knew could use it.
We love how our Westminster community is always standing ready to serve others!
At the end of April, our entire community came together for a State of the School Family Picnic. Attendees braved the weather (that was a trend this year!) to enjoy Chick-Fil-A dinner together before gathering in the Upper School Gym. Dr. Brower presented on all of the wonderful highlights of our 50th year. We capped the night with the drawing for the Booster Club’s truck raffle. Congratulations to Patty Blanton, winner of the truck raffle!!
Field Day is always one of the most fun days of the year at Westminster. Students come together for some friendly competition and plenty of laughter and excitement. This year, the Upper School held their own Field Day a week prior to the Middle and Lower School. Seniors, whose classes had ended already, came back to volunteer at the Lower School Field Day. The best part of the day is the all-school picnic, where students eat, dance, and play together on the field!
Westminster began a new era in its storied history in 2022 with the arrival of Dr. Shawn Brower to serve as the 10th Head of School.
Dr. Brower came to Westminster from Briarwood Christian School in Birmingham, Ala., where he served as the Head of the Upper School and varsity men’s high school soccer coach. He was responsible for leading 82 faculty and staff and nearly 900 students in grades seven through 12. During Dr. Brower’s seven year tenure, Briarwood boasted an upper school retention rate of 98 percent, developed a system-wide graduate profile aimed at future readiness that aligns with school mission and vision, bolstered a robust academic program, and expanded fine arts and athletic programs.
Dr. Brower’s career in education began 30 years ago teaching history, Bible, and physical education. He has a passion for developing young leaders, and much of his career has emphasized teaching leadership courses and developing leadership programs. Prior to his positions at Briarwood, Dr. Brower held various leadership roles at Jupiter Christian School in Jupiter, Fla., Chattanooga Christian School in Chattanooga, Tenn., and Orangewood Christian School in Orlando, Fla., where he was the Head of School.
Dr. Brower attended Geneva College where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history and secondary education. He received his masters in educational leadership from Covenant College, and
his doctorate in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
In addition to his work in education, Dr. Brower has published three books: We Became Men: The Journey Into Manhood (2012), The Huddle: Becoming a Champion for Life (2013), and STAND TO: Finding Masculine Courage in a Stand Down World (2021).
Degrees, positions, and accomplishments aside, Dr. Brower’s heart is for his students to be discipled as faithful followers of Jesus Christ. This passion and focus will, with God’s blessing, keep Westminster on mission in its ministry and message, for many years to come.
Dr. Brower has been married to his wife, Shawn Margaret Brower, for 30 years. They are the parents of three sons: Joshua (25), Josiah (21), and Jakob (19). Mrs. Brower serves at First Presbyterian Church of Augusta in the missions and parish departments.
Westminster welcomed two new leadership team members for the 2022-23 academic year. John Egan came on as the Director of Athletics and Jill Egan joined the team as the Director of Admissions.
John Egan
John came to Westminster from The Village School of Naples, in Naples, Fla., where he served as its director of athletics since July 2021. Prior to that he spent nine years as the director of athletics and girls varsity soccer coach at Christian Heritage
School in Trumbull, Conn. In both roles, John was integral in the development of new and fledgling programs, and increasing the participation of existing programs. He has coached successful soccer teams to New England Championships, League Championships, and New England tournaments, and been named Connecticut Prep Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year (NCSAA).
John earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Gordon College, and his Master of Education with an Athletic Administration concentration from Springfield College.
Jill Egan
Jill also came to Westminster from The Village School of Naples, in Naples, Fla., where she served as a development associate since August 2021. Prior to that, Jill served as an events manager for a non-profit and the world’s leading hedge fund, as well as built her own small business. She has experience in all areas of fundraising and events management for non-profit organizations, particularly independent Christian schools.Jill earned her Bachelor of Arts from Gordon College.
Jill and John celebrated 19 years of marriage in June. They have three children: Maggie (16), Tessa (13), and John (9).
While not a new face to Westminster, Kendra Sue Finch took on a new role for the 2022-23 academic year. Finch was named director of development for Westminster in June of 2022. During her 21 years of experience, Finch has taught high school and middle school Spanish and has served as an Ed Tech Coach in some of the most esteemed private schools in the state of Georgia. Upon returning home to Westminster, she has served on the Leadership Team, the Curriculum Committee, and the Advancement Committee, and she has led over 20 professional development workshops for teachers. In addition, she founded the New Faculty Mentorship Program, launched Westmister’s first ever Alumni Council, planned and rolled out the school’s 1:World program, and launched technology and innovation training initiatives for all faculty. She also successfully led Westminster’s accreditation efforts last September.
Additionally, many know Finch through her successful work with Westminster’s GenCyber program. Over the past three years, she has received and managed over $450,000 in grant funding from the NSA and the National Science Foundation to lead GenCyber professional development workshops for teachers in the CSRA. To date, Westminster is the only private K-12 school in the nation to have ever received a GenCyber grant. Westminster’s GenCyber Teacher Program has become one of the highest rated GenCyber programs in the nation under Finch’s leadership.
On a beautiful, warm August morning, hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and well-wishers gathered to officially celebrate Westminster Schools of Augusta’s 50th year. The Opening Convocation ceremony was followed by a small luncheon for current and previous board members, previous heads of school, and faculty and staff who have served Westminster for 20 years or more. These faithful servants have dedicated so much of themselves to discipling students and building the Kingdom through Christ-centered education.
Even in such esteemed company, David Hanks stands out as an eminently faithful leader. Through the years, Hanks has been known to many as a mentor and friend, and he is often affectionately called “Mr. Westminster.” For over 40 years, he has worked tirelessly to advance the causes of the school, raise funds to make provision where needed, and offer a helping hand to countless members of the extended Westminster family.
On this day, it was only fitting that the school should honor David Hanks for his four decades of faithful service by unveiling The David Hanks Legacy Scholarship. Created with utmost affection by Westminster’s board of trustees, The David Hanks Legacy Scholarship has been established to ensure that the legacy of Mr. Hanks’ unmatched love and service for Westminster live on in perpetuity.
While introducing the scholarship on that special day, Dr. Shawn Brower said, “For 50 years God has sustained Westminster and provided incredible people who have sacrificially given of themselves in immeasurable ways so the school might flourish into what it is today. However, we would like to recognize one special individual for his 43 years of immense abiding love, deep sacrifice, bold action, courageous leadership, and prayerful, deliberate and thoughtful Christ-honoring action in the 80s, 90s and 2000s.”
Mr. Hanks has been a parent of two Westminster students, the board chairman, an avid fundraiser, a faithful prayer warrior, a wise mentor, and an encouraging and positive presence at school activities and events.
Established with the characteristics of our beloved Mr. Hanks in mind, The David Hanks Legacy Scholarship will be given annually to an academically thriving sophomore or junior who embodies the following of Hanks’ characteristics:
•An evident and transparent love of Westminster
•A missional, servant’s heart for those in and outside of the school
•A proud ambassador and champion of the school
•A student of authentic character who exhibits a consistently positive attitude
Students will be nominated by and voted for by faculty in the late spring of each year. The student selected will receive a $5,000 scholarship toward their Westminster tuition for the upcoming academic year.
If you would like to honor Mr. Hanks’ legacy by contributing to the David Hanks Legacy Scholarship, please visit https://www.wsa.net/GiveNow and choose to make a “Tribute” gift in honor of The David Hanks Legacy Scholarship, or you can mail a check that references the “David Hanks Legacy Scholarship” in the memo line.
It is our sincere hope that the establishment of this scholarship will point students to Christ through the testimony of David Hanks for many years to come. To God be the glory!
us, in great humility, to thank our God with hearts of deep gratitude and praise for His wonderful provision. As we recognize that Westminster belongs to God and we serve Him as its stewards, it must lead us to a greater sense of dependence and reliance upon Him.
On June 20, 2023, the Westminster Schools of Augusta Board of Trustees, with great delight, voted to pay off the school’s remaining debt. This vote and the subsequent act of making final payment marked the first time in the school’s history that we could declare that we are debt free. In a year marked by numerous events honoring the school’s 50 years of ministry, this serves as the crescendo of our celebrations before entering into our 51st year.
While this certainly was the result of visionary leadership and biblical stewardship by the board of trustees, the guidance of the finance committee, the generosity of First Presbyterian Church of Augusta, the wise counsel of others, and the diligence of the school’s leaders, it is so much more.
This is yet again a reminder of our faithful covenant God who not only established our Westminster Schools of Augusta, but has seen fit to bring us to this point of celebration and remembrance. I say “remembrance” because the Lord has seen fit to bless us in countless ways over the years and has graciously smiled upon us. I say “remembrance” because, should we ever take our eyes off the Originator and Sustainer of all we are and all we have, then we might quickly resort to pride and forgetfulness, thinking that we have some personal reason to boast in our school, its reputation, and its successes.
As head of school, looking to launch us into the next 50 years of faithful and fruitful ministry, I would call on all of
May we never look around at the Westminster we love without lifting our eyes and hearts in deep adoration and praise to the one true God who saw fit more than 50 years ago to plant and establish this school here in Augusta. Such regular remembrance should lead us to a place of gratitude where we ask God for grace to become the school He envisions for our families and community and that we send more laborers into the world.
So may we first call on Him for more grace, as an act of faithful responsive obedience in following His commands, to become what He desires: a Christian school set apart to pursue what is good and beautiful and right in His sight as our God and King. Anything less will lead us, like the children of Israel, to be consumed by the influence of culture around us through the pursuit of lesser gods to worship. May we continually keep our gaze and affection on Christ!
So yes, we remember today as we celebrate and worship God for His great faithfulness to us. With great expectation and anticipation, we lean forward into His providential will for our school as we set our hope and hearts in Christ alone. So, with great boldness and confidence, let us all look to Christ, the chief Cornerstone and Shepherd of our Westminster Schools of Augusta, as we step into our 51st year of ministry. Corum Deo!
“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21
Westminster’s Fine Arts Department had another amazing year of productions and performances. From Lower School’s first ever Arts Extravaganza to an outstanding performance of Middle and Upper School’s Disney’s High School Musical, there was something for everyone, no matter their age!
In October, the Drama Department hosted an Evening of Dinner Theatre centered around a performance of the murder mystery comedy CLUE. Westminster’s very own Chef Keith Boring catered the event.
CLUE placed second at the region One-Act Competition, and junior Arden Pantsari won Best Performance for portraying Mrs. Peacock at the state One-Act Competition.
Senior Abby Wells was one of 11 student artists accepted into the Morris Museum of Art’s Teen Show.
Mattie Drew (grade 8) and Ben Renshaw (grade 11) qualified for All-State Chorus.
Lower School held its first ever Art Extravaganza, celebrating our young artists and encouraging art skills appreciation.
Nine students placed at the Regional Literary competition.
Six students represented Westminster at the Agnes Markwalter Youth Art Competition. Arianna Iribhogbe and Tessa Egan placed first and third in their respective divisions.
Middle School Chorus earned the highest rating possible on performance and sightreading at GA Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluation.
Disney’s High School Musical was a huge success, bringing together different groups of Westminster students by incorporating athletics into the production. Approximately 800 people attended the performance over four shows.
45 students participated in the second annual Lower School Westminster’s Got Talent.
Julia Finch, Abby Wells, and Bethany Williams hosted their senior AP Art show at the Jessye Norman School of the Arts.
Savannah Landrum (grade 11), Kayla Petrey (grade 11), Abigail Knight (grade 11), and Clara Baker (grade 11)were selected as winners in various categories in Augusta University’s Young Writers Contest.
Cynthia Drake (grade 9) and Ella Parker Whitcomb (grade 9) were selected as winners in the Morris Museum of Art’s Combining Voices Writing Contest.
Lower School art teacher Mrs. Morris is the artist behind two of the Art the Box decorated utility boxes around town. She painted the beautiful Cherokee Rose at the corner of Boy Scout Roadand Skinner Mill Road and Kayaking the Canal, which is located at the corner of Laney Walker Boulevard and R.A. Dent Boulevard.

One of the benefits of private, Christian education is the opportunity to participate in many activities that are not available to all students in public schools, often due to the sheer number of students vs. roster spots. At Westminster, we are proud to say that our students have ample opportunity to participate in athletic endeavors, and many of our students in the Middle and Upper Schools are two, or even three sport athletes.
With such strong commitment in our student body, and support from our Booster Club and community, we set out over a period of 15 months to make some significant improvements to our facilities to better serve our students, families, and guests.
Over the summer of 2022, the Upper School Gym floor was refinished and repainted. This provided a beautiful new home for Tebbs Court and for our basketball and volleyball teams to play.
This field had fallen into disrepair and was an unrealized benefit. With some sprinkler rerouting and careful work on the part of our groundskeepers, it has turned into a beautiful field for physical education classes and Middle School soccer practice. We have some exciting plans for this area in the future!
Competitive teams need a standout scoreboard, and now we have one! Thanks to the Booster Club and our friends at Coca-Cola, our Wildcats show off our wins in style.
While the new activity bus is used by the entire school for field trips, fine arts events, and other needs, it does fill a huge need in transporting our athletic teams to away games. We are so thankful to have this resource!
Coming Summer 2023! Brand new stadium seats are coming to the home side of Wildcat Stadium this summer. You can look forward to more comfortable seating for your next game!
When you think about the differences between the lives of the students attending Westminster in the spring of 1973 and those graduating in May of 2023,the contrasts are stark. Students in 1973 couldn’t conceive of having a computer in their home, much less carrying one in their hand. The average cost of a gallon of gas was only 39 cents, compared to $3.99 today.
Think too, of the jobs that today’s students find themselves preparing for that didn’t even exist when Westminster began, like web analyst, app developer, genetic counselor, and cyber security specialist.
Nonetheless, this year’s graduating class still had much in common with students from 1973. The students were full of joy and gratitude, hope and excitement. They came from families who had sought a place of belonging that would instill more than just the knowledge that books, classrooms, and science labs could provide.
The class of 2023 held dreamers and seekers, athletes and scholars, artists and actors, though none were confined to just that role. Some had been together
since preschool, and some had only arrived in time for their senior year, but all had a place of belonging and significance with each other. On a beautiful May weekend they gathered together with their families and friends to worship together one last time as they celebrated baccalaureate and commencement.
Commencement signifies not the end of something, but the beginning. The class of 2023’s time at Westminster is at an end, but now they set out to discover what the Lord is calling them to do. They are going on to study subjects like biology, cyber security, philosophy, digital animation, theater, and so much more. They will be as close to Westminster as right up the street and as far away as New York, and eventually they will land wherever it is that God calls them. We know they will be taking the lessons they learned – in the classrooms, on the fields, on the stage, and all the places in between – out into the world to share God’s Word and be His light on their college campuses and beyond.
Congratulations, graduates. We can’t wait to see what the Lord has in store for you.
Creed is a graduate with distinction and member of both the National Honor Society and National Beta Club. While in high school, Creed has been a four year member of the varsity boys Soccer team, winning All Region and All State honors, serving as captain his junior and senior years, and helping to bring home GIAA Soccer State Championship. He also played basketball for two years and football his senior year. Locally, he played club soccer and participated in a disc golf league throughout high school. In the classroom, Creed has achieved the highest numeric average in multiple classes, has maintained high honor roll status every semester, and has earned the designation of AP Scholar with Honor. Creed also served as the athletics and service chair on the Student Leadership Team during his junior and senior years. Frank O’Neill entered Westminster in the fall of 1974 as a sophomore, just two years after Westminster was founded. At that time, Westminster only went up to grade 10, but an additional grade was being added each year to build a full high school program. As a result, O’Neill was in Westminster’s inaugural graduating class in 1977, and he graduated as Westminster’s first valedictorian. While at Westminster, he played soccer, basketball, and baseball, and also served as the president of Westminster’s Student Council.
After graduating from Westminster, O’Neill attended Augusta College, now known as Augusta University, where he majored in Biology and Education. Upon graduating from college, he was hired at Hephzibah High School, where he taught Chemistry, Anatomy, and Physiology, and coached softball.
In 1988, O’Neill received an appointment to the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. where he began his career as a Supervisory Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. During his career with the FBI he worked to combat international drug trafficking in Bogota, Colombia; coordinated national and international terrorism investigations; and served as the national coordinator for covert operations for counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and criminal investigations.
After retiring from the FBI in 2014, O’Neill went to work for Discover Financial Services conducting physical and information security assessments of their third-party vendors across the globe. In 2021, he was hired as the managing director for cybersecurity by a security focused consulting firm in Washington, DC, and he recently conducted security assessments during the World Cup Games in Qatar at the request of the Qatari government.
In coming full circle and never forgetting his roots, O’Neill is still actively involved with Westminster
by assisting his niece, Kendra Sue Finch, with Westminster’s GenCyber Program, in which he serves as a cybersecurity expert and field experience storyteller.
O’Neill currently lives in Washington, DC with his wife, Nina. They attend the District Church where they lead a couples small group. O’Neill also leads a men’s group and serves as a counselor each summer at Camp Hope in Dahlonega, Ga. O’Neill and his wife have two grown sons who are serving their country in the Coast Guard and the U.S. Army. Both of his sons are married and have given him and his wife the gift of four grandchildren.
As O’Neill spoke to graduates at this year’s commencement ceremony, he emphasized the importance of being a lifelong learner, and how Westminster set him on that path early in his life.
“When I arrived at Westminster I was a young man who lacked confidence and showed no potential for leadership, but that all changed at Westminster,” said O’Neill. “I am so thankful for those who invested in me.”

Georgia’s GOAL Scholarship is a truly remarkable program provided to Georgians by our elected officials. In exchange for contributions to Georgia GOAL, Georgia taxpayers receive a 100% state income tax credit. In essence, you get to direct where your state income tax money goes!
By contributing your tax dollars to Georgia GOAL and selecting Westminster Schools of Augusta as your recipient school, you help maximize financial assistance for deserving families who might not otherwise be able to afford the cost of a Westminster education. The Georgia GOAL scholarship program helps families with children enrolled in public schools or just entering kindergarten make the move to Westminster where they can receive an excellent Christian education.
Westminster currently has over 75 students receiving scholarships through Georgia GOAL, and these students are helping to shape our school by contributing to our academic, athletic, and fine arts programs. In turn, Westminster gets the opportunity to shepherd the hearts of these families as we welcome them into a loving, Christian community.
When a student receives a GOAL scholarship at Westminster, it covers not just one year, but their entire time as part of the Westminster family. We never want cost to be an impediment to any family staying at Westminster.
Your Georgia GOAL contributions are vital to the health of our community. If you have made a GOAL contribution to Westminster in the past, thank you. It truly makes a difference in the lives of many!
Pledging is not yet open for the 2024 tax year, but we encourage you to be in prayer about your opportunity. We will notify our community when pledges open for 2024.

It has been my sincere honor and pleasure to serve as Westminster’s Director of Development this year, and I want to thank all of you who made Westminster a priority in your giving as we celebrated our 50th year. When I was asked to take on this role in July of 2022, I prayed that God would give me a theme that I could use to guide our giving efforts throughout the year. After weeks of prayer, the theme the Lord gave me was “Here we raise our Ebenezer’’.
This past year was dedicated to declaring, remembering, and celebrating the Lord’s faithfulness to Westminster throughout the past 50 years. From Opening Convocation to the State of the School Family Picnic in May, each event has been a time for Westminster to come together, as one community of believers, to raise our Ebenezer and celebrate God’s abundant goodness to us as we declare, “Thus far, the Lord has helped us”.
But, God was not only faithful in the past. He has continued to pour out His blessings on Westminster through the generosity of His people. We are so grateful for our community that has once again
generously supported our school in a myriad of ways. Your contributions to the Georgia GOAL Scholarship program, your business sponsorships, and your gifts to the Westminster Fund have helped to solidify this year as one of Westminster’s best giving years in history. Thank you for believing in the work that we are doing. Thank you for partnering with us as we raise up a generation of students who are rooted in the transformative power of the Gospel. Thank you for believing in our mission and for allowing us to expand the reach of our mission through your financial giving.
We are humbled by your support, and we would like to ask you to continue supporting Westminster as we move forward into the next 50 years, believing in Christ’s name that Westminster’s best years are yet to come.
