My Love Of The Environment

I have always been concerned about the environment. In elementary school, I made posters encouraging students to recycle and hung them up everywhere. I organized my first protest when I was nine. My best friend and I made picket signs to object the trimming of trees on our street. I didn't realize at the time it was to protect the power lines, but the good intentions were there. My concern for protecting the environment (and every tree on the street) has only grown stronger as I've grown up; now, I'm choosing to major in Environmental Studies because I know that the environment is all we have. Humans are fully dependent on natural resources, but we continue to overfish oceans, chop down rainforests, and use harmful practices like fracking to extract oil from the earth. We're so focused on short term financial gains that we forget the fact that our environment influences our entire lives; every poor choice we make now will spiral out to impact future generations. I want to major in environmental studies so that I can better understand the complex relationships between humans and the environment, and find ways for humans to take care of the environment instead of exploiting it. My love of the environment has always been supported by my strong interest in politics. I am especially drawn to the interdisciplinary nature of this major; to solve environmental issues, it is necessary to understand politics, economics, and human nature. Today in our world we don't seem to care about what happens to our planet. We are just continuing to pollute, destroy ecosystems, and deplete our natural resources, and so much more to harm our environment. But what is anyone doing to stop this to save our environment? All of his conflict and problems we are bringing onto our selves, which will only continue to get worse and worse if we don't take action now. It is important to know that humans must have a relationship with our planet in order to not destroy it, also known as environmental responsibility. What exactly is environmental responsibility? There really isn't an exact definition since there are many ways people look at the situation. But one of the interpretations of the definition is that environmental responsibly is the "obligation of decision makers to take actions which protect and improve the environment as a whole, along with their own interests," according to the University of Pretorie. But my personal view of the subject at hand is, it's one responsibly or duty to take care, help improve and rebuild any past and future damages we have or will on our environment. Fixing our past actions will help us repair our damaged environment, and prepare us for any future conflict. . But why is it important to have environmental responsibility? It's important since all of the resources we are using and the way we are using them today, are either constructing or razing the world of tomorrow. So, we have to construct sustainability in order to secure we have enough resources, and make sure we don't run out of them in the future. First let me start with the basics. The pollution has both chronic and acute effects on our health, and affects many of our systems and organs. The health consequences of lower levels of pollution have been more difficult to decide. The first cause is that people differ in response to the environment and the toxics. When we are exposed to the different conditions caused by the environment, the variation is wide because of how we react. With this variability of the population, it can mask the effects that do occur in a sensitive segment of the population. Economy is not a separate thing from production, consumption and exchange. Economics pays no attention to goods and services provided by nature, air, water, soil and sunlight that produce everything we need for survival and all the riches we are able to accumulate. What is the cost of globalization to the environment? Does globalization have the same goals for a healthy planet and justice for people?

Scientists have proclaimed that the warning signs of global warming are unequivocal. It was concluded that global warming is most likely man–made, and its effect will impact the world for centuries.

Global warming is basically the increased in temperature of the Earth. Human activities are said to be the main causes of this phenomenon. For example, we produced excessive carbon dioxide when burning fuels to produce energy since Industrial Revolution. The world would not be able to withstand this change in temperature. The last Ice Age was only about 3oC lower than our current temperature. This is how serious our situation are, and we are all to be taking this information seriously and give it our best shot to reduce the effect of global warming.

In order to do so, we must reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. We can always turn to using renewable energies, like wind, nuclear and solar energy. Though this are not things that we, citizens, can decide on. However, there are definitely things which all of us could do to put in an effort to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, in whatever circumstances we find ourselves in.

When travelling, the main aim is to reduce number of vehicles on the road because travelling vehicles produce carbon monoxide, which is a greenhouse gas. Studies have shown that eight out of every ten vehicles on the road are private cars, thus I urge all drivers to consider taking public transport, instead of personal vehicles. For shorter distance travelling, we can always bike or walk the short distance. For those who do not need to use a car that often, try car–sharing, where a group of people will own a car and take turns driving it.For drivers, you should always plan your journeys so that you will take a lesser period of time to get to your destination. I do not believe that there isn't an environmental, population, or resource crisis, in all aspects. I think that there is. And I don't believe that the situation is becoming better as the author suggests. But there are some problems facing the world today that we must deal with. The pollution facing countries like Poland and Russia is horrible. The substances that cause this is industrial and radio active waste. One problem that is very large is over population. The following countries are some that have this problem: Mali, Burkina, Faso, Niger, Togo, and Benin. The reason for this is because they have poor funding for birth control and not have much funding for medical care. In the figure 1–16, the following are discussed, air pollution, water pollution, waste production, food supply problems, and bio–diversity depletion. To be honest, I never have given the environment any thought and what my opinion would be on the topics that I hear around me. Sure, I've heard about environmental issues on the 6 O'Clock news, but never did I think about it for more than a few seconds and what position I would take on the topic of the day. After even just a few days of taking my environmental issues class, I realized that my opinion and position on certain topics do matter and that every little thing we do has such an extreme impact on something in nature somehow. One thing that I have definitely taken away from the class so far on the food chain or the circle of life and how it ties into other events occurring right now. It has been just a coincidence that during this period of time while taking this environment class that the hurricanes in the southern states and islands have occurred which have had a tremendous impact on our environment. The last topic that I want to discuss is how this environmental class and the simple effort of informing myself has changed my perspective of every animal's purpose on this planet, and finding a new respect for these beautiful creatures that we share the world with.

When you think of a food chain, you automatically know that humans are at the top, which still holds true, however myself and probably many other people only associate ourselves as the dominant species along with other animals such as wolves, bears etc. being the primary consumers. In reality, theres so many more levels on the food chain, making it a lot more complex system than it seems. You may ask why this is important or why I am even talking about it, and it the simple fact that I find myself guilty of being so selfish and not thinking about the bigger scheme of things. Each of the five forces is ranked on a high to low scale, sometimes part of the force is high, but other parts are low. A pet store has many suppliers of dog toys. Abstract

Environmental pollution is anything that can cause harm to the environment. Pollution is any undesired alteration of the environment and is often caused by human activities (Mader, 2016, pg. 552). Types of human pollution would be air, water, soil, radioactive, thermal, noise, and light. Each of these forms of pollution has been known to cause the enormous amount of concern for the environment. There are laws in place now that are limiting pollution and to help control the issue. Environmental pollution is a serious problem we are facing globally. It is the debate concerning pollution, which we have been pondering for the past century. Prior to the industrial revolution, scientists thought that the atmosphere was untouched by man–made pollutants until they found air bubbles hidden in the core of Greenland's ice shelf (Stromberg). After finding this essential development, scientist began to reconsider the initial cause of pollution and how to decrease the lasting effects of it. With this discovery, pollution was traced back to Ancient Rome and it was decided that globally we needed a new approach for dealing with this problem. There are numerous types of pollution and they each have a devastating effect on the global climate. A scientist has been working on ways to re–direct the negative effects of pollution and at the same time encourage people to try to find ways to do that part to help with this effort. We all can find some way to improve the world and decrease pollution.

The problems with air pollution seem to be one of the largest most discussed situations. The Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) air pollution is the release of pollutants into the air that is damaging human health and world. There are many forms of air pollution and smog and soot are two of them. When forming a curriculum, teachers need to determine three types of objectives– fact, skill, and appreciation for something. The "appreciation for" objective is the one that an environmental class stresses. Environmental courses emphasize the importance of conserving the Earth by creating environmental responsibility, evokes morals. In conservation, we have to decide what is important and certain actions we want to take to preserve what we feel is important. Smog, contaminated water, melting of snow packs. These are some of impacts that Climate Change has had on the Earth over the past years. All of these are product of the increase in carbon dioxide emissions by humans and their polluting activities. Since the Industrial Revolution, these events have escalated and, they have been becoming more noticeable and prolonged across the globe. Some of these events are more palpable and pronounced in certain parts of the hemisphere. For example, it is more common for a developing city to experience inferior conditions of air quality than a rural town. Since the effects of Climate Change are perceived differently around the world, its concrete consequences on the environment and on the living organisms around us are a challenge to identify and understand. However, since the interest on Climate Change and its effects on the environment has increased, more research and founding has been put in place in order to expand the knowledge and information on this topic. This induces a greater amount of pressure put on each nation to contribute, which in turn will put more pressure on the economies and societies throughout the world to participate in the global 'clean up'.

Lastly, as developing nations continue to develop, they can examine our history and avoid many obstacles we were faced with. These newly industrialized nations will not have to leave the same impact on the environment as we did. In twenty–five years to come as they continue to grow, they will have access to our most 'environmentally friendly' technologies, without having to experiment and wait to conclude the aftermath of it's effect on the environment.

David Attenborough once said, "An understanding of the natural world and what's in it is a source of not only a great curiosity but great fulfillment." At the moment, we only have one planet that humans are able to survive on. However, human actions are destroying this planet and using all of the natural resources our planet provides us. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't know or care about what will happen to this planet once they are no longer alive. I've always been interested in the environment and ways to protect our planet, but it was for the attitude mentioned previously that I finally decided to major in environmental science. I enrolled in this course with the hopes of learning more about the scientific issues that are impacting our society in order to understand what's happening in different parts of the world. If we don't learn about what's impacting the environment and the human causes of these issues then many people could become sick, die, and suffer. This course has had a great impact on me personally, because I learned about environmental issues in ways I never had before and also ways in which I can reduce my impact on the environment which will ultimately mean that I made a difference in the world. Taking this course has changed my understanding and opinion on environmental issues. To begin, on the 15th slide in the first lecture I learned what mountaintop Removal Mining was which was something I never knew existed and how it affects the state of Tennessee.Secondly, on the 20th slide during the same lecture, I was introduced to the concept of I=PAT and sustainable development. Avatar is the one of many films that address the major environmental issues of today's world, one which happens to be about sustainability. The film foreshadows the reality of the Earth by 2154. In particular, Avatar demonstrates the results of overusing natural resources and thus forcing humans to continue to destroy other areas of nature for sources of energy. Since there is no longer energy on Earth, the only option is to seek out energy from a natural habitat where indigenous Na'vis have been living for years. In addition, since there is no energy, Earth is not able to sustain organic life or rich produce. Furthermore, the place is called Pandora and contains an atmosphere that is toxic to humans forcing them to wear masks. There are no megacities or urban environments here, only raw, organic nature that is preserved and cared for after the Na'vi. Here, sustainability is successful because the people recognize the aesthetic justification. Above all, the Na'vi also refuse to partake in deathly acts which reserves the limited amount of energy that they have. Avatar also touch bases with the moral justification aspect where the Na' vi humans discern that their mission is to aid the environment to persist contributing to the success of sustainability on Pandora for future generations. All across the world, people are facing challenging environmental problems every day. Global warming is the biggest problem that our planet is facing right now. It is one of the most current and widely discussed problem. Our environment undoubtedly has many things we can use to benefit our everyday lives. Even if our environment is not in tip–top shape, we need to start taking care of it better. If we don't many things will happen. These things include plants dying, animals going extinct, air becoming polluted, coral reefs dying, and water rapidly coming contaminated. Another problem our environment has to face, overcome, or adapt too is Global Warming. Global Warming has and will continue to impact our environment worldwide if we do not begin taking immediate action and do something to protect our environment. Protecting our environment is indeed the first action that should be taken. Protecting the environment should take place locally and globally in my opinion. There are many things that our local environment could do that would have have a tremendous impact on our environment that genuinely would not take oodles of effort. A few of these could be as easy as recycling soda cans, old school or work papers, and glass bottles and taking them to a local recycling center. When you recycle you are reusing things or making them into new things. Two more examples would be hosting or participating in a highway clean up, or planting a community garden at a park. Environmental sustainability is the process of making sure current processes of interaction with the environment are pursued with the idea of keeping the environment as pristine as naturally possible based on ideal–seeking behavior (Wikipedia, 2010). What makes environmental sustainability so important is that it demands that society designs activities to meet human needs while indefinitely preserving the life support systems of the planet (Wikipedia, 2010).
