Bobcat launches new compact tractor line-up

A new line of Bobcat compact tractors has been launched for the Europe region. The tractors are part of the ground maintenance equipment (GME) range announced by the company in October last year. Building on the company’s success in the North American market, Bobcat aims to rank within the top-three GME players in Europe and to double growth in global GME market by 2027. Together with the compact tractors, the GME range in Europe includes mowers and turf equipment, as well as Bobcat’s existing mini track and small articulated loaders.

Bobcat’s Daniele Paciotti said: “Bobcat is offering three compact tractor platforms – the 1000, 2000 and 4000 series – which feature nine new models from 25 to 58hp. First deliveries of compact tractors to our dealers are planned for February.”

The compact tractors are designed to increase productivity, versatility and reliability. Whatever the application, these machines help to get the job done efficiently thanks to their robust construction, smooth operation, flexible configuration and full compatibility with a wide range of the firm’s attachments.

Each of the nine models in the range varies in size and engine horsepower, with the option to choose between manual and hydrostatic transmissions: threepoint hitch with telescopic or quick lower links and open canopies (ROPS) and cabs. All the models offer all-day comfort in the cab workspace. With air conditioning (cab models), a suspended seat, an adjustable steering

wheel, linked pedal and intuitive ergonomic controls.

Together the nine models offer a wide choice of application solutions and can be equipped with front, mid and rear connections and power takeoffs. Features include an independent pto, auto-pto; pto cruise, HST cruise or draft control ensuring optimum productivity and uptime.

The proven Bob-Tach system comes as standard on all machines with the front-end loader available as an option, enabling users to switch easily between different attachments to carry out multiple jobs easily. Fuel consumption is kept to a minimum thanks to the eco pto feature, while the linked pedal ensures optimum driving performance from the efficient three-cylinder engine.

Every Bobcat tractor model comes standard with four-wheel drive. Customers can easily engage it whenever the work demands it, enjoying superior power and traction in even the toughest working conditions.

On top of that, Bobcat’s philosophy will continue to be in place for all the approved attachments, encompassing homologation, certification, engineering approval and Plug&Play.

Daily maintenance is simple thanks to the one-piece engine cover. The extensive dealer network means that customers can count on a one-stop-shop for expert advice, timely service and parts availability for both machines and attachments. In addition, each tractor is backed by a 24-month, 2000-hour warranty.

Farmland values continue to rise

Year-on-year growth has been decelerating since the start of the year, but still continues to climb at a moderate pace quarter the same year. “Historically, low levels of available land coupled with a growing range of purchasers has helped to maintain pressure on agricultural land values across England and Wales,” said Chandler.

Despite several months of economic uncertainty and political instability, average land values rose again in the final quarter of 2022. The seventh consecutive quarter of growth saw arable land across England and Wales reach £9233/acre, an increase of 1.3% since Q3 the same year, according to national property consultancy Carter Jonas. Pasture values increased at a slightly slower rate of 0.3%, averaging £7472/acre.

“Year-on-year growth has been decelerating since the start of the year, but still continues to climb at a moderate pace,” said Carter Jonas’ head of farm agency, Andrew Chandler. “When compared to Q4 2021, average arable land values have increased by 4.5% and average pasture values by 4.3%.

“Longer-term growth remains strong across all types of land. When annualised over a 10-year period, arable land has increased at a rate of 2.8% and pasture has grown by 3.5%.”

Prime land continues to be highly sought after; year-on-year prime arable values have risen by 6.1%, reaching an average of £10,961/acre.

“Prime arable land values continue to be bolstered by demand for quality domestic food production, arising from an expanding awareness around sustainability, health and nutrition,” said Chandler.

Natural capital investors have driven lesser quality hill and upland values up substantially, rising by 23% in the 12 months to Q4 2022.

Average lifestyle land values also saw significant growth, rising by 5.0% to reach £15,792 – the highest level ever recorded by Carter Jonas.

“A robust 10-year annualised growth rate of 4.4% for lifestyle land has been driven predominantly by substantial growth in the South East and West Midlands, with these regions seeing 10-year annualised growth rates of 7.3% and 7.4% respectively,” said Chandler.

There has been sustained positive market sentiment despite the economic and political turbulence towards the end of the year.

“There are still sizeable obstacles that will challenge the sector in 2023, notably changing subsidies, the increased cost of borrowing and the impact of prolonged input price inflation,” he said.

“Yet a steadier political backdrop and sustained demand from an array of buyers is likely to inspire confidence and benefit land values across England and Wales.”

Although supply is below longerterm averages, there were 10,435 acres of newly available land to the market in the final quarter of 2022 – an increase of 16% from the third

“Over the coming year, this will serve to keep the agricultural land market tight, with innovation and bringing land back into production from other non-agricultural uses increasingly necessary in the medium term.”

The rise in interest rates and subsequent surge in the cost of finance will pose a challenge to the market over the coming months, but Chandler is optimistic that land values will remain strong.

“Businesses and individuals have become less inclined to borrow across all property asset types and those with debt will experience decreased liquidity.

“Yet, the prominence of cash buyers and rollover funds in the market is likely to mean that land values are less exposed to increasingly expensive debt,” said Chandler.

With its rugged construction, wireless data transfer, integral solar panels and solid-state anemometer, the Atmos 41W weather station operates for long periods without maintenance. Consequently, the total cost of ownership is extremely low for such a high-quality weather station.

100,000 people sign petition to ban sky lanterns

More than 100,000 people have signed an NFU petition calling on the government to ban sky lanterns across England and Wales. The petition is supported by the National Fire Chiefs Council, the RSPCA and Keep Britain Tidy.

Sky lanterns are highly dangerous and damaging to farmland, causing wildfires and harming livestock and wildlife. Farmers continue to report the threat they pose.

Application window for FETF Grants opens

The Farming Equipment and Technology Fund application window is now open until April 4.You can apply for a grant if your business is in England and you’re a farmer, horticulturalist, forestry owner or contractor carrying out services to any of the above.

Atmos 41W: Accurate, low maintenance and easy to set up

New functions for Jaguar

In 2023 the Jaguar 900 and Jaguar 900 Terra Trac forage harvesters from Claas benefit from an optimised pick up drive while the 800 series is expanded with new and more powerful models. In addition, the Cemis 1200 terminal with the new GPS Pilot becomes available for all models.

In 2021 Claas introduced a third, customerspecifiable drive variant for the front attachment on the Jaguar 900 and Jaguar 900 Terra Trac models in the form of an additional hydraulic drive for the reel of thepick up. This drives the reel independently of the intake auger with automatic, variable speed adjustment relative to the ground speed. The result is an efficient raking action at any speed with minimal intake losses and low wear.

With effect from the 2023 model year, this drive system is enhanced with additional functionality that automatically adjusts the pick up speed to the ground speed above 5kph. If the ground speed or the set chop length is changed, the speeds of the pickup reel and intake auger are automatically matched to the prevailing conditions. This results in an even more consistent crop flow, especially where there are frequent and significant changes in swath thickness. If necessary, both speeds can also be adjusted manually from the cab by the operator in accordance with the requirements of the harvest. This has the benefit that crop feed is even more precise, resulting in a more consistent crop flow through the forager, especially when operating under varying conditions.

Also new is the automatic chain lubrication for the left-side drive of the intake auger and pick-up reel.

From the 2023, the Jaguar 840 receives the larger Stage V six-cylinder engine already used in the Jaguar 850. Its displacement of 12.8 litres means that engine output for the smallest forage harvester in the current Claas product range is increased by 27hp, taking the maximum output to 435hp at 1600rpm and making

significantly greater torque reserves available. The machine’s efficiency is maintained as the increased displacement has no effect on the diesel consumption per tonne of throughput

The Jaguar 840 has a 730mm wide feeder unit with four precompression rollers as well as a 750mm wide chopping cylinder with a diameter of 630mm. As an option, it can be equipped with the MCC roller corncracker with a sawtooth profile, the MCC Max with the particularly durable Busa Cladcoating or the MCC Shredlage cracker. It is therefore possible to select the right technology for intensive crop processing across the entire length-of-cut spectrum.

Following the Trion and Lexion, the Jaguar 900 and 800 can now also be equipped with the new Cemis 1200 terminal with the newly developed GPS Pilot. As well as representing an alternative to the row sensor when harvesting maize with the Orbis and the Cam Pilot when harvesting grass, this automated steering system can also be used when harvesting whole crop silage or other types of forage crops. The Cemis 1200 has a 12in screen that provides a 2D and 3D display with a splittable screen, as well as online task management and documentation.

Another new development is the two-stage activation of Auto Pilot/GPS Pilot and Cruise Pilot. After turning and entering the next track, the operator first activates the steering system at the touch of a button and accelerates up to the speed at which the machine is able to make optimal use of the available power; with a second push of the button on the Cmotion lever, Cemos Auto Performance or Cruise Pilot – depending on the system fitted – takes automatic control of the ground speed. This enables faster adjustment to the set engine speed, the most efficient power level and a suitable ground speed. If the pushbutton is pressed down for longer, both functions are activated simultaneously as usual.

Accuracy and precision continue to evolve for Kverneland’s range of mounted and trailed sprayers following the development of several new features. There are three new optional features, which comprise SpotSpray; the introduction of a 25cm nozzle spacing option; and the next generation of boom height control.

SpotSpray technology is an extension of variable rate application maps. While such maps have been applicable to seed drills and fertiliser spreaders with task control, the same principle can be applied to Kverneland sprayers that are equipped with iXspray software, when combined with iXflow Air/iXflow E individual nozzle control.

SpotSpray uses treatment maps that can populated with a zero application rate in addition to a prescribed application rate. By loading a treatment map into the control terminal, the sprayer automatically controls individual nozzles through the software and GPS, following only the indicated areas on the treatment map. These maps could be used to define weed spots, wet areas, non-germination areas and parts of a field with known soil problems. As a result, liquid application costs can be reduced, further protecting healthy crops from unnecessary blanket applications.

There are two differences between zander and other coarse fish? It is well worth eating: filleted and beer battered it comes near to pollack or cod. The other major difference is that it is an alien/invasive species.

Not only can you remove it from the water, but you are legally required to do so!

This can cause a bit of bother if you are fishing on a day ticket on angling club waters.

Many of them have a policy that all fish caught must be returned. The reason for this being Eastern European anglers taking home carp, bream and other species for the pot.

I will be asking the Canal & River Trust legal lads for written confirmation. Until it is forthcoming any fish taken will go in the bag; anyone who objects will get short shrift!

It is the same policy as other introduced species: grey squirrels and Canada geese being the two obvious ones. In my humble opinion there should be no close season on Canadas. They are driving the native wildfowl off the water.

been fishing long enough to manage on my own.

As you are allowed two rods on your licence I shall generally fish with one bait and one lure. Most of my fishing will be on canals and for lures I have a nice short spinning rod which will be mated up to a fairly light fixed spool reel.

The bait rod will either be a carp rod made by Leeda or one I bought with a broken top joint – cut down to just short of 10ft it has handled mackerel three at a time, so should manage the zander!

One thing you must do, however you decide to fish for this species, is that you must incorporate a wire trace between reel line and hook, as with pike these guys can chop monofil like sewing thread!

In future articles I will be talking about setting up your rigs, baits and lures and hopefully telling the story of decent catches, either for a day or for a season. Plus our local press has documented several cases of fines in the region of five hundred quid! More next time. In the meantime, good sport and stay safe!

British-made Energiser from Weaving

The Energiser is a shallow tillage machine suitable for seedbed preparation, straw redistribution and soil loosening. Working depth is between 0 and 15cm. With 167mm spacing between the legs it is similar to Weaving’s Sabre drill allowing for high volumes of trash to flow through and ensure all ground is worked. Removable scraper arms allow for quick replacement and to aid clearing larger debris. The four rows of 40mm points are mounted to the frame using coil tines allowing for a variety of different points to be used. These are followed by a full-width ‘V’ ring roller to leave a level finish.

All models can be fitted with a Magnum seeder for cover crop, grass and OSR establishment.

One of the key observations from recent seasons, Weaving says, is the high levels of straw matter left after harvest that need to be evenly distributed and broken down to create an optimal stale seedbed. As a result, farmers have been seeking a cultivator which will move more soil than a stubble rake but not invert the soil like a primary cultivator.

On first look, the Energiser has adopted a number of key features from other Weaving models. The Energiser has taken the cast iron 700mm diameter ‘V’ ring roller from the LD and Shortdisc that has proven to leave a level and firm finish. It has also been fitted with the same hydraulic depth control that can be conveniently and accurately adjusted using coloured aluminium spacers.

are mounted on a robust frame, featuring a two-section wing fold with a substantial category III headstock with 60mm pivot pins.

The coiled tines have been staggered across four rows with 500mm row-to-row spacing to allow high volumes of trash clearance, with suspension allowing the 40mm tine to oscillate, further aiding trash flow and reducing stress on the machine. These tines are mounted on to the frame using a simple bracket, enabling them to be easily removed and replaced in the field. The inch-by-inch coiled tines allow for a variety of different points to be used.

The Energiser can evenly mix soil and manure to prevent nitrogen losses when not fully incorporated. It can also be used as a chitting tool to stimulate germination of weed seeds prior to drilling.

Väderstad acquires parts of inter-row cultivator firm Thyregod A/S Kverneland buys into the Phenix

Kverneland Group has signed an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in French company BC Technique SAS, which produces the Phenix Agrosystem brand of interrow cultivators, rotary hoes, guidance interfaces and tine harrows.

This latest acquisition is a move that provides access to range of sustainable farming solutions, enabling growers to achieve efficient, accurate and consistent mechanical weed control.

While the Phenix brand will continue to be available in those markets where it exists, these premium products and solutions will be introduced as Kverneland products, available through the Kverneland dealer network.

Väderstad has acquired parts of the Danish company Thyregod that produces a full product range of inter-row cultivators. The acquisition includes all intellectual property rights to Thyregod’s inter-row cultivator product area, the TRV range including the Swingking.

Thyregod A/S has roots that go back to 1918. For more than 25 years, it has worked to develop, produce and sell inter-row cultivators. The spring of 2023 will be a transition period and Väderstad will take over the responsibility for the inter-row cultivator business June 1.

Thyregod’s inter-row cultivators are a perfect match to Väderstad’s current portfolio of Tempo planters and to its new technologies for seeding with the Proceed concept and for future sustainable and efficient farming.

Over the years the Thyregod TRV technology has been optimised to the last detail, with a patented section lift, countless adjustment options and the world’s first camera-controlled interrow cultivator with individual frames that are each controlled by a camera.

The TRV Swingking has a unique frame solution that holds two frames into one main frame. This improves efficiency and saves a pass. Also, the high main frame together with a patented solution for lifting the row units, avoids damaging plants while increasing speed.

“Our new and existing farmer customers will increasingly use inter-row crop cultivators and it is essential that we include them in our product range,” said Vaderstad UK’s sales and marketing manager Andy Gamble. “We have already identified that many of our Tempo farmers will move to more mechanical solutions for weed control.”

“As there is usually a challenge to match an inter-row cultivator to a seeding machine, Väderstad can now offer farmers a complete solution,” he said. “Adding an inter-row cultivator to our range also optimises our future Proceed concept in cereals.”

From June 2024, the inter-row cultivators will carry the Väderstad brand. More details about this will be announced for Agritechnica 2023.

The portfolio includes the Helios star-wheel equipped rotary hoe; Lynx guidance interface with colour scanning self-steering camera for use with any existing hoe; and the high-tech X-Green guidance interface solution that can be equipped with two self-steering cameras.

In addition, the product range includes the Onyx series of row-specific tined hoes offering working widths from 3–12m. When equipped with Isobus and the X-Control parallelogram, the Onyx offers section control through automatic raise and lower of individual weeding assemblies at headlands.

This high-precision capability also enables the interrow Onyx hoe to be used in conventionally spaced cereal crops, boosting output and productivity. Product specifications and pricing details are to be announced, with the first models expected to arrive this spring.

The production and use of biofuel as an alternative source of energy will be explored

Agri-tech is a cornerstone of efficient, sustainable food production – and a new conference to be held in the southwest of England promises to lead the way by showcasing the latest opportunities and development.

The region is an agri-tech powerhouse, with 14 universities offering a range of research specialisms and collaborating with industry to develop spin-off companies. “Following the G7 summit in Cornwall there has been a lot of discussion around the wealth of talent we have in the area,” said Joanna Rufus, chair of South West Agritech. “We have over 200 small- to medium-sized agri-tech companies and 64 business support organisations –including centres of excellence – which generate a turnover of more than £371 million a year.

“Together with major employers including Arla Foods UK, Mole Valley Farmers, Thatchers Cider, ABP and Yeo Valley, agricultural companies in the South West contribute more than £3 billion in gross value added to the UK economy.”

To help profile some of the research, development and commercially available technology in the region, South West Agri-tech is holding a conference at Exeter Racecourse on April 20. It will feature a range of outdoor robotic and drone demonstrations, an indoor market place with dedicated networking time, and high-profile speakers.

“The event will be free to attend,” said Rufus. “We want the whole farming, horticulture and agri-tech community to attend, and learn how such developments have a genuine and practical role to play within agricultural businesses.”

Key technologies that are penetrating the global agriculture sector include data analytics, artificial intelligence, internet-of-things, and automation systems, along with production and uses of biofuel as an alternative source of energy. Satellite technologies are increasingly enabling the next generation of agri-tech by providing

positioning information, delivering frequent, widescale observation, and providing reliable, affordable and ubiquitous connectivity.

“As the country’s most rural region, we are leading the way in agri-tech research and innovation, helping to support our rich farming and food sectors,” said Karl Tucker, interim chair of the Great South West Partnership. “We are delighted to support this event, to showcase our region’s world-leading technologies and the pivotal role they play in the UK’s economy and food security.”

John Deere launches electric walk-behind mowers

John Deere has launched two batterypowered, walk-behind greens mowers and announced further hybrid innovations to its range.

The two specialist machines are packed with the same quality components and technology that existing John Deere customers have become familiar with, but are powered by a 58v, 3.2kwh lithium battery.

The 185 E-Cut has an 18in cutting width while the larger 225 E-Cut takes a 22in cut.

With near-silent operation, the walk-behind machines can cut roughly 50,000 square feet of grass on a single charge

The machines will be available to order later this year.

John Deere also used BTME to showcase its industry-exclusive three-wheeled fairway mower with brushless electric reel motors.

Semi-mounted reversible plough equipped for On-Land ploughing

Agricultural machinery maker Pöttinger has added an important feature to the equipment options on the Servo T 6000. With the On-Land package, the semimounted reversible plough for tractors with an output of up to 500hp gets additional flexibility. Switching from ploughing in the furrow to ploughing outside the furrow takes just a few simple steps. Soil conservation is enhanced by using tractors with wide tyres, dual wheels or crawler tracks for efficient power transmission. However, if this is not possible due to the site conditions, the plough turnover mechanism can also be set for in the furrow if required.

When conditions change, the switch between infurrow ploughing and On-Land ploughing is done in a few steps. The hydraulic swing-out On-Land beam link pushes the frame of the Servo T 6000 outwards so that the plough follows the tractor centrally. This means that it can be used with tractors with an outer width of up to 4 metres, providing plenty of space for dual wheels and crawler tracks. To ensure consistent depth guidance when ploughing outside the furrow, an optional depth wheel provides support in front of the first plough share so it is guided at the precise working depth. This is designed as a space-saving pivot depth wheel within the plough beam. Due to intelligent use of the spool valves, no additional connection is necessary on the tractor for the hydraulic adjustment mechanism.

Large tractors are often fitted with wide tyres or dual wheels, this results in not enough space in the plough furrow and driving over ploughed ground is sometimes unavoidable. This is where the Servo T 6000 with the On-Land equipment option comes in, because the tractor drives outside the furrow on the ground that has not been ploughed. This not only improves the tractor’s power transmission to the ground, but also conserves the soil due to the large contact area of the tractor and

minimises harmful compaction in deeper soil layers. Likewise, it eliminates the risk of smearing the bottom of the furrow due to wheel slip from tractors driving in the furrow.

Driving outside the furrow while ploughing ensures a straight pull line, this results in more efficient power transfer from the tractor to the plough and less side pull, reducing wear on the landside. Guidance systems can be used for increased convenience, which ensures precise work and reduces driver fatigue. In addition, the tractor is level with the ground due to no wheels driving in the furrow, ensuring a straight and more ergonomic sitting position for the driver, which is especially important on long working days.

The Servo T 6000 is designed for use with powerful tractors up to 500hp. The ability to plough with the On-Land option makes even better use of the available tractor power. This ensures efficient ploughing and reliable power transmission even in difficult conditions. This system is designed for years of professional operation.

JCB breakthrough shows hydrogen has appeal

JCB has made a major breakthrough in proving the wider appeal of hydrogen combustion technology by installing one of its super-efficient hydrogen engines into a 7.5-tonne Mercedes truck.

The retrofit was completed in just days and one of the truck’s first test drivers was JCB chairman Anthony Bamford, who has been spearheading the company’s £100 million hydrogen project.

The internal combustion engine used in the truck is the same as those already powering JCB prototype construction and agricultural machines.

“This is a giant leap forward for JCB and the rest of the world because we all have one goal: to reduce emissions,” said Lord Bamford. “The hydrogen engine we have installed in the truck is the same as those already powering prototype JCB machines, so there is

no reason we should not see hydrogen combustion engines in vehicles used on the roads in the future, including cars.”

JCB has already manufactured 50 hydrogen internal combustion engines. They now power prototype a backhoe loader and Loadall telescopic handler machines. The truck at the centre of the latest project was diesel-powered and the switch to hydrogen is a breakthrough which shows that this form of power could be a quicker way to reach global emissions targets.

A market first, the Forklift PortaYards features a 2.5m steel race frame with fork slots to transport with either a telehandler or loader tractor. The race frame also features a rubber floor and three-way drafting.

Spring calving beef and dairy herds are approaching a critical period for trace element supplementation.

“The majority of foetal development takes place in the six to eight weeks leading up to calving. A huge amount of nutritional stores are going to go towards foetal development, requiring supplementation during this period of essential trace elements and vitamins to support adequate growth, health and reproduction of both the dam and her calf,” said Emily Hall, product manager for Nettex.

The addition of EnduraBol PreCalver and EnduraBol High Iodine to Nettex’s EnduraBol Cattle bolus range means cattle farmers have new options for their trace element supplementation programmes.

“The Forklift Porta-Yards is the first mobile sheep handling unit on the market that doesn’t require towing for transportation,” said Edward Wise of Wise Agriculture, UK distributor of Porta-Yards. “Without the need to remove wheel kits for use and put them back on for towing, set-up and repacking the mobile sheep unit is significantly quicker with minimal effort. Transportation via forklifts also allow for the sheep yards to be used by producers who don’t own quads or want to take their livestock trailer on the back of the tractor and sheep yard on the front.”

The monile yards are available in 100-head and 250-head capacities. Units come as standard with 1m high New Zealand alloy hurdles with a solid top section. This solid section acts as a visual barrier to

keep sheep from jumping while also protecting the legs of working dogs. Up to 10 hurdles can be stacked on either side of the 2.5m steel unit.

The Forklift Porta-Yards features a tapered V race with integrated three-way drafting and a rubber floor. Units come with a 2.1m long swinging forcing gate with the option to include a dosing race.

Units also come with L braces and three-way joiners to give producers multiple set-up options and pen strength.

“As more arable farmers integrate livestock into their crop rotations, the Forklift Porta-Yards are ideal for those without a way to tow a mobile sheep yard in the field,” said Wise. “It is also a great option for producers on ring-fenced sites without several miles of travel between land parcels.”

The Forklift Porta-Yards feature a four-year warranty from Landquip NZ. The 100-head capacity Forklift Porta-Yard is priced at £4512 (plus VAT) – components can be bought separately to increase the capacity at a later date. The 250-head capacity is priced at £6685.

The benefits of multicut grass silage seen in drought-hit 2022

High feed, fertiliser and fuel costs are driving UK dairy farmers to want to produce better silage in 2023. And those who made multi-cut grass silage during the droughted 2022 season tended to be better off.

Those were conclusions from a new Ecosyl grass silage survey conducted among more than 700 UK dairy farmers ahead of the 2023 season –three-quarters of whom made silage conventionally (cutting up to three times a year) and a quarter of whom made multi-cut silage (cutting four times or more).

The vast majority in both groups (74% and 70% respectively) reported that growth of their grass silage crops had suffered from drought in 2022. But as well as making better progress

with cutting, more of those making multi-cut tended to see higher silage yields and better quality.

“Getting on for half (45%) of farmers in the multi-cut group had already taken two cuts by the end of May,” said Ecosyl silage expert Ken Stroud of the survey organiser, Volac, “compared with only 17% that had taken two cuts by the end of May in the conventional group. And this trend continued when the dry weather had hit at the end of July.

“By then, nearly three times more farmers in the multi-cut group than in the conventional group had already progressed to three cuts – at 44% versus 15%. More interesting still were the differences in silage yields and quality between the two groups.”

Compared with 63% of conventional silage-makers who felt yields were less than normal by the end of July, just 53% said this in the multi-cut group.

Quality-wise, over the season as

a whole, 35% of conventional silage makers also rated their 2022 grass silage quality as poorer than normal, compared with only 28% saying this in the multi-cut group.

“At the other end of the scale, nearly twice as many multi-cut makers as conventional silage producers felt their quality was actually better than normal in 2022 – at 20% versus 12%,” said Stroud. “Indeed, higher quality was the most popular advantage of multi-cut silage identified by users of the system in the survey, with 60% saying this, followed by 50% naming more yield over the season as an advantage.

“Clearly, multi-cut isn’t immune to the effects of drought, and it isn’t possible to make it on all farms, but the survey results repeatedly pointed to those who made multi-cut in 2022 being in a stronger position. Another advantage of a multi-cut system is that it puts some silage in the clamp early in case the weather turns too

wet or dry later. This was named by 36% of users,” he said.

Also rated highly among multi-cut’s advantages was the opportunity it provides for more slurry applications, which can be useful for farmers cutting back on granular fertiliser.

“When survey respondents were asked what was likely to make them want to make better silage in 2023, averaged across both groups, 79% said high feed costs, 63% said high fertiliser costs and 49% said high fuel costs,” said Stroud. “Clearly there was good understanding among producers that making better silage can improve business efficiency and make better use of their fertiliser investment. These are key reasons why minimising losses in silage dry matter and quality has become increasingly important.”

Results from this latest survey mirrored a previous Volac survey conducted in the dry year of 2020, which also indicated that multi-cut grass silage put dairy farms in a stronger position.

RAKES & MOWERS

Fendt

Fendt has launched several changes to key grass kit models with automated adjustments, additional optional extras, and technology functions to increase efficiencies for its equipment.

An updated version of Fendt’s largest Former 14055 Pro four-rotor rake features a new auto adjust tine height system that changes the position of the tines in relation to forward speed. The contractor-spec rake features an auto raking height adjustment that will reduce forage losses and contamination by matching tine height to the tractor’s speed. As the speed increases, the system lowers the rotors to control the distance between the tines and the field. As the

speed drops, the rotors are raised to prevent forage contamination. Fendt’s gapControl monitors the overlap between the front and rear rotors with the information shown on the display. A warning sound will help prevent forage loss around corners, helping to maximise the working width.

A new memory function can help operators shorten set up and folding times by logging previously saved settings into a memory that can be activated at the touch of a button. Settings such as working width, swath width and raking height can all be saved to the integrated system, allowing the rake to automatically return to the correct parameters, reducing the potential for operational errors.

Elsewhere, flat sealing hydraulic couplings are now available to allow high flow rates and prevent pressure loss, while new guarding helps keep debris away from the hydraulic components. Finally, a new LED light package illuminates the rotors, enabling operators to keep tabs on the four rotors after dark.

Fendt’s rear-mounted Slicer 860 butterfly mowers are now available with tine or roller conditioners to help shorten wilting times for farmers working in tight weather windows. The Slicer 860 KC tine conditioner works at a slower speed, helping to reduce fuel use, and the longer tines offer high throughput even in heavy or damp crops. The angle of the counter comb can be adjusted to offer greater control over the wilting process, while the conditioner has been designed to work with the new

spur gear cutter bar.

The Slicer 860 RC offers a roller conditioner suited to leafier crops, such as legumes. The two rollers are mechanically driven to guarantee high throughput; the lower roller is driven from the spur gear, while the upper roller is moveable and runs from a synchronised drive via gears and universal joints. The contact pressure can be adjusted according to crop conditions via an adjustable spring. Both conditioner options will suit farmers and contractors that have varying crop requirements.

The gears for driving the mowers are now arranged in rows to offer an efficient power curve and the larger gears reduce the rotation time. The larger discs reduce the number of units across the cutting width, helping to lower maintenance requirements, and the blades can rotate 360° on the discs. A new reduced power drive allows a pto speed of 850rpm in good conditions, helping to increase efficiency and reduce fuel use. The reduced overall weight of the Slicer 860 and 960 models allow the triple mowers to be easily operated by a lower horsepower tractor with a small lift capacity.

Following the success of the FlexLoad pick-up testing in the field, the system has been rolled out across the Strautmann range and is available as an option on all forage wagons. In fact, it is fitted as standard on all Magnon machines.

Strautmann has ensured that the Flex-Load pick-up design will minimise tine wear and breakage and therefore downtime,  due to easy tine replacement without having to remove the pick-up bands.  In addition, all Straumann forage wagons are designed with camless pick-ups which allows flex over the working width and reduces wear and downtime and saves on fuel.

David Mein, Opico’s product specialist for the Strautmann range said “I’ve been really impressed with

the Flex-Load pick-up – it does a really efficient job, and the flexibility of the tines means that foreign objects aren’t collected with the grass – since using Flex-Load I haven’t seen a tine break yet. On the Magnon 10 the Flex-load pick up is hydraulically driven and is therefore adaptable to forward speed, optimising the performance of the grass collection.” Flex-Load tines are made from a flexible durable polyurethane plastic meaning they adapt to ground undulations, rather than penetrating the ground. This significantly reduces the likelihood of soil and stone contamination into the cutting unit.  The gentle Flex-Load is also ideal for all crop conditions.

Pöttinger

Following the launch of the new Boss 3000 Master loader wagons with the innovative Evomatic loader unit, Pöttinger is now also launching the BOSS 3000 series featuring the firm’s classic tine conveyor unit, Supermatic. This move will see the popular and widely used Euroboss series being completely replaced in 2023. The new Boss 3000 is available in three sizes with load capacities of 18.7cu, 21.3cu m and 23.5cu m as both high-profile and low-profile versions.

The tine conveyor system originating from the Euroboss is known for very high forage conservation combined with the lowest power requirement. The loading system can be ordered with three or four arms, which can also be used to load heavy silage. The loader wagons are driven as standard at 540rpm at the pto, and can be operated by tractors as small as 60hp. Above that, up to 110hp is also possible. As an option, the driveline is also available for a pto speed of 1000rpm. As standard, the Boss is equipped without knives. Six knives can be slotted in as an option. The knife bank with 16 or 31 knives can be folded out by an optional hydraulic system and then swung out alongside using the Easymove system. All the knives are individually protected against foreign objects.

width of 1800mm (DIN) has a freedom of movement of 120mm at the outermost tine. In especially demanding terrain, a trailing jockey wheel chassis further improves ground tracking. Ground tracking can also be optimised with the Autotast active parallel lift drawbar. The five pick-up tine carriers, which are guided by a cam track, are driven by a maintenance-free V-belt.

The hydraulically dry forage extension can now be equipped with an automatic folding system. Optional nets prevent the crop from snagging or falling out between the struts. For longer working days, an LED lighting package is also available.

In addition to Isobus compatibility as standard, the loader wagon can be equipped with three different types of control system: from simple pre-selects operated by the tractor spool valve, to entry-level automation with power-beyond hydraulics for the scraper floor, and load-sensing hydraulics operated directly from the control terminal. If the tractor is not yet fitted with an Isobus terminal, a wide variety of control terminals are available.

The greasing points on the four-arm conveyor system and the maintenance-free V-belt drive on the pick-up make maintenance a breeze on the Boss 3000. The chain drive on the loading unit is greased by a lubrication system as standard. If any maintenance is needed, the wagon indicates the job in the service counter, which is also standard.

McConnell

McConnel has added a variable forward reach model (VFR) to its 30-Series range, an innovative move for this size of machine.

The 4.8m reach PA4830 VFR features a new armset created from Strenx and Hardox steel that is more than 5% lighter while adding 0.5m reach over the PA4330.

The benefits of the new armset include improved comfort and visibility, greater precision and faster working speeds when operating in confined environments or around obstacles, such as signposts and street furniture

enables operators to extend the arm 0.9m forward and 0.9m backward, positioning the attachment at any point along the cutting range and dramatically expanding the working area.

Featuring 30hp independent hydraulics the PA4830 can be mounted to a wide range of utility vehicles and compact tractors and can be specified as a left or right-hand cut.

The PA4830 has been redesigned to take advantage of the latest technology and new features include 95l oil tank (increased from 80l); safety breakback to protect the armset on contact with an obstacle; arm suspension for smoother operation and armset protection; lift and angle float; greaseless bushes for reduced maintenance; improved hose routing for enhanced protection and road lighting kit.

Reach arms in the 30-Series range can be controlled by either simple cable controls or McConnel’s inhouse designed, Mini Motion joystick controller. It features a progressive mini joystick with two easy-access switches providing proportional control of up to five different services.

Doosan reveals new 8-tonne excavator

Doosan has launched the new DX85R–7, an 8-tonne mini-excavator and the latest addition to the firm’s next generation range of Stage V mini-excavators. The reduced tail swing (RTS) excavator is designed to offer maximum performance, while improving stability, versatility, operator comfort, controllability, durability, ease of maintenance and serviceability.

The DX85R–7 utilises a newly improved upper structure platform offering increased durability and robustness and a different boom swing cylinder layout resulting in an increased boom swing angle of 60°, making it ideal for working in confined spaces on projects in landscaping and agriculture, among other areas. It has a bucket digging force of 6.7 tonnes, combined with a traction force of 6.6 tonne, while travel speeds are a mobile 2.9kph in the low range and 4.8kph in the high range.

The DX85R–7 is powered by a Stage V-compliant diesel engine providing 65hp at 2100rpm. It combines exceptional power output and high torque at low rpm, 9% more than the previous model. A combination of diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter aftertreatment methods ensure compliance with Stage V.

With a height to the top of the cab of over 2.6m and a width of 2.25m, the new cab on the DX85R–7 is especially roomy, providing excellent operator comfort and controllability. The cab has a full glass entry door to maximise operator visibility on this side of the machine from inside the cab. The four standard high luminance LED work lamps on the cab further enhance visibility.

Protected by a falling object protection structure, the safety of the operator in the cab is enhanced by a rear view camera as standard and an optional 360° (AVM) system offering a choice of five views on the display.

The enhanced HVAC system provides more nozzles to direct warming and cooling air, including both front and rear pillar nozzles that together help to improve the system performance. Larger nozzles are also used to ensure direct and sufficient airflow for operators.

A new series main control valve (MCV) is used in the DX85R–7, that has improved performance by reducing the internal pressure loss, compared to the DX85R–3. The new MCV cuts energy wastage and pressure losses by over 40%, significantly reducing operating costs.

An improved working range has resulted from the new position of the boom foot point, which has been moved forward by 100mm and upwards by 50mm. The DX85R–7 also offers improved lifting power and stability through a number of design changes, including the 127mm increase in the tumbler length, a redesigned undercarriage with lower ground approach angle, an expanded rear swing radius and dual flange and double profile roller for both rubber track and steel track type shoes. Dozer improvements on the DX85R–7 have increased the jack up height/digging depth and the lift angle. A newly designed 1.45-tonne cast counterweight also ensures excellent machine balance and stability when working.

The DX85R–7 offers full reach maintenance from ground level via a three-part rear bonnet cover, providing easy access and simple maintenance. A mesh cover has been applied to prevent dirt from coming in. The high efficiency pre-cleaner and two-stage air cleaner filters are easy to maintain and disassemble using clips.

The DX85R–7 mini-excavator has the latest telematics system installed as standard, which provides a management system for the excavator, by collecting data from sensors on the machine.

• Charges are £24 plus VAT for each item valued and entered on the register for three months (3 Register publications).

• Commission charges are negotiated prior to advertising equipment – so you can calculate your net return.

• No sale – no fee. Commission is payable only when an item is sold during the 90 days contracted period.

• All enquiries are handled by the Regional Register Sales Representative who will normally accompany potential buyers to inspect equipment.

• The Regional Register Sales Representative completes all necessary paperwork leaving you free to run your business.

1. The Regional Sales Representative shall act as the agent for the seller and is not responsible for any default by the seller.
