sually, sometime in October, someone — be it an excited homeowner or big-box store — will kick off the holiday season with a display of snowmen, Santa and twinkling lights. Inevitably, someone else will assume the part of the Grinch, proclaiming that the 10th month of the year is too early for Christmas cheer.

Bah humbug, I say!

I’ll claim it’s out of my family’s unwavering love for the holiday season (but really, laziness), but we’ve had our reindeer doormat on our front porch since last Christmas. And all of the sudden, it’s relevant again!

We hope you take our Holiday Gift Guide as our metaphorical doormat to the 2019 holiday season. Without a doubt, this is my favorite time of year. As a child of divorced parents, this was the one time I was able to spend days with both my mother and father.

My father’s side of the family also owned a skating rink, and part of our tradition was a gigantic skating party reunion. Faith, family, food, hours of fun — and a

And this is precisely why I’ll never say it’s too early for holiday decorations. Bring it on! Let’s celebrate these days for as long as we can!

So, this year, I’m challenging you to do just that. Don’t race through the holidays like you would a honey-do list. Savor the moment. Do not complete your Christmas shopping on your phone while lying in bed. Sure, you could blow through your entire list with dozens of Amazon gift cards, but where’s the fun?

If it is the thought that counts, how much thought did that really take?

Instead, shop local. In West Orange, we’re blessed to have so many uniquely wonderful shopping options. Give people on your list a slice of your hometown. Share with them a trinket from your favorite downtown merchant or tickets to a performance by one of our amazing arts organizations. Some of our best local restaurants also offer catering, so why not wow your family and friends with a uniquely West Orange dish? News flash: It’s fun to browse stores for that perfect gift, and in doing so, you’ll be supporting shops owned by your neighbors and keeping your dollars in this community.

’Tis the season to stay safe W

ith the hustle and bustle of the holiday season comes, unfortunately, more opportunities for dangerous situations.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office offers these tips to help you and loved ones enjoy the holidays free of accidents and crime.

WHEN YOU ARE SHOPPING

Whether you’re out for an evening in downtown Winter Garden or across town at Mall at Millenia, make sure you stay aware of what’s going on around you. Often, long lists, long lines and busy stores can cause shoppers to let their guards down. n Park in a well-lighted space, and be sure to lock the car, close the windows and hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk. n Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay with bank or credit cards, or even your phone or watch when you can. n Don’t overburden yourself with packages. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse close to your body — not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket. n If you’re shopping with children, teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if you get separated.

WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING A PACKAGE

In West Orange, porch package poachers are a year-round concern. However, with an increase in shopping around the holidays, the opportunities for such criminal activity will increase. n Track your packages. FedEx, UPS and the United States Postal Service all offer tracking services that will tell you when a package is due to arrive. Amazon’s own delivery service also can alert you immediately when a package arrives on your doorstep or in your mailbox.

n Have packages delivered to your office. Instead of having your items wait at your front door all day, consider having them delivered to your place of business. Some shippers also offer to hold packages at their locations.

WHEN YOU ARE TRAVELING

As you pack your bags for that vacation to see extended family, take some time to secure your home before you leave. n Ensure all doors — especially ones seldom used — and windows are secured.

n Consider purchasing some app-controllable timers, lightbulbs or other such devices. These will allow you to turn on lights periodically to deter burglars. n App-enabled camera systems and other products, such as a Ring doorbell, allow you to have a live video feed of your home.

agree to the terms and conditions, and click “Submit.”

The office will review the photo, verify the address and add it to the map within one to two days.

The map is live now and will remain accessible until the new year.
