ADDITIONAL TIPS n Arrive on time. Arrival time recommendations vary by airline and day of travel, so check with your air carrier. If possible, collapse the stroller before arriving at the detector. n Be ready. Passengers should be ready to present their boarding passes and photo identifications.

Stepping into an airport during the holiday season is so stressful — and potentially traumatizing — that many classic Christmas films include at least one scene depicting the chaos.

And even one series — “Home Alone” — based its entire premise on flying at Christmastime.

The Transportation Security Administration offers a few tips to help alleviate some of the stress and help every traveler reach his or her destination in time for all the parties, dinners and presents.

PACKING

n Pack an organized carry-on bag using layers — a layer of clothes, then electronics, more clothes and then any heavier items. This will help speed up the X-ray process. n Prepare a quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag of liquids before arriving at the airport. For carry-ons, liquids must adhere to TSA’s 3-1-1 rule: Bottles must be smaller than 3.4 ounces; they must be placed in a one-quart zip-top bag; and travelers are limited to one bag each. n Wrapped gifts are allowed but not encouraged. If something in the gift needs to be inspected, TSA officers may have to open it.

GETTING THROUGH THE LINE

n Pockets. TSA strongly recommends removing all items from pockets, as well as certain accessories, including wallet, belt, bulky jewelry, money, keys and cell phone. Removing these items will reduce the chance of needing additional screening after exiting the machine.

The officer viewing the image cannot see the passenger, so any irregularity that appears on the screen will require inspection to determine what it is. n Head coverings. Travelers are permitted to wear head coverings and religious garments during the screening process. n Shoes. Remove shoes before entering the screening technology and put them directly on the belt to go through the X-ray machine instead of in a bin with other items.

ORNAMENTAL OPTIONS Looking for more ornaments for your Christmas tree? Ornaments made out of recycled materials are becoming more popular. If you’re feeling crafty, you can even make your own.

Save burned-out lightbulbs from your tree, and use a glue gun to make them into a star shape.

RECYCLE WRAPPING PAPER We all have at least one family member who makes a mad dash to scoop up bows and ribbons on presents to save for the next year. But what about saving wrapping paper?

In some cases, wrapping paper can be recycled, but it must not contain non-paper additives such as glitter and dyes. Most labels will include the recycling symbol if it can be recycled. Also, remove all tape from the wrapping paper before placing it in your recycling container.

IT’S A WRAP Extend the theme of recycling to gift wrap with these reusable materials: n Newspapers n Fabric n Brown paper bags n Gift boxes n Baskets n Fabric ribbons

MAIL CARRIER Although U.S. Postal Service workers cannot accept cash tips, they can accept non-monetary gifts (generally of up to $20 in value). Homemade gifts, such as fudge or jam can add a personal touch.

CONCIERGE Tip $10 to $100. Keep in mind that you do not have to spread the tips equally. Those who serve you more should get a larger tip.

BEAUTICIAN Tip the cost of one haircutting session. If the same person who cuts your hair also styles and colors it, you may consider tipping more.

GARBAGE COLLECTOR Tip $15 to $30 to each person. However, if your collector is a truck driver who operates a machine to collect the trash, there is no need to tip.

BABYSITTER One night’s pay, plus a gift from your child/children.

GARDENER Tip $20 to $50. However, if you see a different gardener each week, don’t worry about tipping.

TEACHER Tip $25 to $100. Gift certificates make good tips. And, for something more special, you may coordinate with other parents to give one large group gift.

COACH/ACTIVITY INSTRUCTOR Gifts of $25 or less. Also, a personalized gift from your child is a good idea.
