FROM THE WINTER GARDEN HERITAGE FOUNDATION

THROWBACK THURSDAY APRIL 21, 1977 If you lived in West Orange County in the 1970s, chances are you stopped by Rose’s Chevron Food Mart for gasoline and other necessities. In the April 21, 1977, issue of The Winter Garden Times, Rose and Jim Seuhr thanked their loyal customers for helping them make their new store a success by offering a sale on gasoline. Regular gas was a low 55 cents a gallon, or you could opt for the supreme for five cents more.

FROM THE ARCHIVES Several generations of children were educated in Winter Garden’s African-American school prior to integration in 1969. Despite less-than-equal educational facilities, West Orange County’s African-American population rallied around the

Winter Garden School for the Colored, Maxey Elementary and Drew High School, encouraging students to excel in athletics, music and debate. Families whose livelihoods came largely through low-income jobs in the citrus industry raised children

who went on to become doctors, attorneys, military officers, teachers and police officers. “Despite the Obstacles” looks back at local AfricanAmerican schools as they existed before 1969.

The mission of the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation is to preserve the heritage and architecture of Winter Garden while creating new cultural experiences. The Foundation also preserves the material culture of West Orange County, using it to educate the area’s youth on the commu-
