IPEX Launches Design Challenge Delivering on its “print in action” vision, IPEX has announced a design challenge aimed at apprentice graphic arts designers and students to create part of its 2017 advertising campaign. Apprentices and students, and designers working in the wider community aged under 25, are invited to develop and submit a design of a visitor promotion advertisement for IPEX. The winning designs will be run in the trade press over a five-month period. Entries will be judged by a panel comprising a publisher, marketing experts, graphics designers and chaired by IPEX Event Director, Rob Fisher. “We felt this is a great way to engage with people who are currently completing apprenticeships in graphic arts and print companies, and with those designers aged under 25 who are working in the wider print community. It gives them an opportunity to showcase their work on an international stage”, commented Fisher. The closing date for entries is 30th April and the winner will receive a MacBook Air with runners-up receiving gift vouchers to redeem for equipment of their own choice. Prizes will be presented at a ceremony held on the main stage of this years’ IPEX on November 1st. Professor Brian Minards, principal of Harrogate and London-based design consultants Minards Associates, and a Professor in the School of Advertising at Academy of Art University, San Francisco, said; “Print is where design meets the physical world, so to my mind it is vital that designers learn what it can do for them. This competition allows for young apprentices and students to experience what it’s like to produce designs that will work across different, integrated mediums.” The competition is closely aligned with the Future Skills Zone, another new key feature at IPEX this year, and aimed specifically to help printers attract new talent into the industry. Middle East Presents New Boom Market For International Print Industry

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) print market is offering dynamic and exciting opportunities according to the latest exclusive research from Smithers Pira. Data in the new report – The Future of Printing in the Middle East and North Africa to 2022 – shows the region as a whole is set to expand from a value of $26.8 billion in 2017 at an annual rate of 8.7% to pass $40 billion in 2022. This contrasts with a mean annual growth of 2.4% for 2012-2017 reflecting the opening of until now

underdeveloped countries to the full range of modern print products and technologies. This expansion is occurring against a more static backdrop for the print industry generally, with annual global growth pegged at a more sober 2% as traditional segments decline. As a consequence the Middle East and North Africa can be seen as an attractive strategic growth target for international print equipment and consumable suppliers. Steve Hill, Smithers Pira’s Operations Director EMEA, says: ‘The drop off in demand for high volume print products – like books

and newspapers – in core European and North America markets, means the print industry needs to find new markets. And from a number of perspectives MENA is very attractive for this. The press is installed at the group’s Chantry site which mainly produces magazines, newspaper supplements, catalogues and brochures for the publication and retail markets.

The state of the art press has also been equipped with the very latest ‘Closed Loop’, Web Monitoring and Quality Management technology, ensuring high output is matched by high quality.


First Rollem Autopunch Installed

Rollem have supplied a bespoke version of the JetStream system to a European based printers who are using the system to cut B2 sheets and then auto collate the personalised playing cards into sets. The JetStream was installed in 2015 and now the latest Rollem machine, the Rollem AutoPunch is being added inline. The Rollem AutoPunch was launched at Drupa last year, it can be configured to die punch paper, card and plastic up to A5 sheet size with stock weights up to 700gsm. It integrates with Rollem finishing machines upstream and wrapping and boxing options downstream. Dies are available in a range of sizes and a re-sharpening service is offered on request.

Rollem Supplies Jetstream To Bradford Based Collisons

Rollem have supplied a bespoke version of the JetStream system to Bradford based printer Collisons who are using the system to slit and cut SRA3 sheets into personalised greetings cards. Following the initial install in October the Rollem JetStream is already showing benefits in increased production with a highly accurate and quality finish. The new quick change cassette system has enabled Collisons to make the change in the size of greeting cards being produced much faster and reduced their downtime. The bespoke JetStream system supplied with suction feeder enables Collisons to produce approximately 3,000 sheets per hour, finishing in two directions to enable the slit and cut.

The installation of the Rollem AutoPunch will enable the company to save time and labour costs compared with the previous hand loading into a RAM punch. The AutoPunch has also been integrated into an existing wrapping machine to provide one complete inline print finishing operation.

Cloud-based MWM Production Planning Tool allows Amedia Trykk to coordinate six printing plants Amedia is Norway’s largest publisher of local media titles – with a daily audience of more than two million readers and users. For its printing activities in Norway Amedia Trykk og Distribusjon, one of Norway’s biggest coldset newspaper printers, runs seven printing plants spread across the whole country – from Bodø in the far north to Larvik, 1200 kilometers southward. To synchronize and coordinate the overall production Amedia Trykk og Distribusjon are using MWM’s cloud-based Production Planning tool (PPC). It supports in six of those printing plants the planning for around 65 titles. Amedia Trykk have been a customer to MWM Group (Stockholm, Sweden) for over ten years. MWM CopyTrack is used for monitoring printing production in real time and collect production data for reports and analysis. Amedia also have been using the former Java based planning system for several years, that now is being replaced by the new production planning system PPC. Started in 2014 the project at Amedia has helped to develop the new cloud based system for production planning. Project management was on the customer side led by Ketil Haugland, CTO Amedia Trykk og Distribusjon, and at MWM Group by Philip Pettersson. PPC allows Amedia Trykk to plan titles, printing jobs and deliveries. Inserts can be booked directly on titles. Most of inserts for Amedia are imported to the system from the Norwegian national insert booking system. The newspapers are using a web portal to enter information into the system regarding circulations and number of pages. All productions are transferred to CopyTrack via interface. In CopyTrack Amedia are monitoring the production in real time and collect production data for reports and analysis.

PPC at a glance MWM Production Planning is a cloud-based service which provides an overview of the use of production resources at one or more printing plants. The planning includes prepress, press and mailroom. The information can be accessed through the internet by all parties involved. MWM Production Planning simplifies planning for production planners and project managers. An order describes the product, customer, product name, editions, paginations, substrate, print runs, etc. The booking is sent to a production planner responsible for allocating resources in the press hall and mailroom (and prepress if relevant). Based on the product description and the chosen equipment, the system calculates production times for the various processes. Naturally, the planner can change the times suggested by the system. The production planner sets how detailed the planning should be, whether down to the level of folder or printing unit and whether mailroom and prepress should be planned by line or by machine. One advantage of detailed planning is that maintenance can be planned for un-booked machines in the press hall and mailroom, in conjunction with production. With a common and comprehensive production plan, it is easy to calculate production times for each printed product. MWM Production Planning includes a customer portal where print clients can update current production information. This reduces the number of mistakes and saves time and money for the client as well as the printing plant.

Happy 21st! NZME upgrades to meet needs of a changed industry

A

large order to refit and automate colour control on a 21-year-old newspaper press on “the other side of the world” is a special one for Q.I. Press Controls for two reasons. For one thing, it’s the classic scenario of the grand old press installed when print was king – and primarily to print a single flagship title – turned in a post-consolidation industry to produce a variety of publications with greater demands and shorter runs. And secondly, there’s a personal cachet for QIPC director Menno Jansen in delivering a much better system than the one in which – as it happens – he was involved before establishing the Netherlandsbased company he now leads with Erik van Holten. The big news is that NZME Print in Auckland, New Zealand, has commissioned Q.I. Press Controls to undertake a complete retrofit of its Goss HT70 press, delivering a 61-camera system to automate not only register and cut-off, but also colour itself using QIPC’s IDS-3D technology. Installed to print the flagship daily New Zealand Herald for then owners Wilson & Horton, the double-width Goss press now prints a variety of other work including NZME dailies the Bay of Plenty Times and The Northern Advo20 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

cate alongside contract work for Fairfax New Zealand, with whom a merger has been agreed subject to regulatory approval. The Fairfax work includes 30,000 circulation daily Waikato Times, 25,000 Sunday News and about 55,000 copies of the national Sunday Star Times – also printed at other Fairfax sites – with these and NZME’s Herald on Sunday produced side-by-side and to the same production deadlines. All of which has put a good deal of pressure on a site which prides itself on its culture and its commitment to quality. Last year the Ellerslie plant was admitted to WAN-Ifra’s International Newspaper

Color Quality Club for a second term, a runner up in the PANPA print site of the year competition, and among winners in the annual SWUG NZ print quality awards. The 1995 press comprises 12 fourhigh towers and three mono units, with three folders, and Q.I. Press Controls will install 37 of its mRC3D cameras for cut-off control, a further 24 IDS-3D cameras for colour and register control, and its IQM quality management system. All cameras are equipped with the AIMS system for automatic cleaning of the optics. The retrofit will replace a register guidance system


installed when the UK-built press was new, and which Menno Jansen recalls as “my first large sale” when he was working for the supplier prior to setting up Q.I. Press Controls. A 24-hour air journey from QIPC’s headquarters in Oosterhout, the Netherlands, Ellerslie, its people, and the “very interesting” New Zealand market therefore holds a special place in his heart. Menno Jansen says has visited the newspaper print site at least every year the last six years: “I knew that QIPC could deliver a system that would better meet their needs, and on my last visit I even had a service technician go there to explain how we would solve everything,” he says. “I am very pleased therefore, that after all that effort, NZME Print has finally chosen to do business with us. To be able to install our modern IDS-3D and mRC-3D sys-

tems makes it a very special order for me personally.” That pleasure is also founded on confidence in the QIPC product: “Other parties simply could not offer what we offer,” he says, pointing to the versatility of the cameras, which can perform all the necessary functions with only two cameras per tower. In addition to the automation equipment, NZME has chosen QIPC’s IQM analysis and management information system, which uses metadata to analyse the quality of the printed product and provide insights into future use. NZME’s aim is to raise the efficiency levels of the pressroom through reduced waste, set-up time and resource. Russell Wieck– who joined parent company APN in Toowoomba, Australia, in 1977, moving to the New Zealand Herald in 2004 – says the NZME culture is focused on improvement, whether it is quality, waste reduction, timeliness, staff morale, skills or personal growth and the united team goal is to raise the bar at every opportunity. With the 2017 print schedules a far cry from the 300,000 daily 80-pages-plus broadsheet newspapers the press originally produced, the new Q.I. Press Controls technology will set new standards for both high-volume work and the

small-pagination, low volume inlinefinished jobs and specialty publications it also handles. Rotomail doubles book-of-one capacity with second Tecnau Libra 800 Rotomail has invested in a second Tecnau Libra 800 soft-cover book binding system to expand its production capacity for short runs and book on demand.

Rotomail was established in 1996 as a Print on Demand service provider. In 2000 the company became one of the first adopters of inkjet technology, introducing color and developing trans-promotional applications. stablished in 1979, Printsystem currently employs more than 50 people in Heimsheim and at a branch in downtown Berlin. Most of its production is digital. In addition to the new inkjet press, Printsystem also has 14 sheetfed digital printing systems and one sheetfed offset press. Industrial enterprises, publishers, advertising agencies, educational institutions, public authorities, ministries and – last but not least – the German Bundestag and the European Central Bank are among the customers of this family owned firm. The main

emphasis of the portfolio is on low to medium-volume print-on-demand jobs as well as end-to-end production of technical documentation, educational materials, magazines, books, catalogs, brochures and official documents. Printsystem operates the new Tecnau cutting line as a near-line installation adjacent to the inkjet press. The line is configured with an Unwinder 550, a Cutter c23, a Stacker s25, an exit conveyor and a waste extraction unit. The printed web is precisely cut in 1-up paper


sheets stacked and ready for binding without any additional side trimming.

New Tecnau Stacker s25: a key component in repeatable product quality The new Tecnau s25 high performance stacker gently grips the sheeted output stacking a variety of coated or uncoated stocks from 40 to 300 gsm with ±0.5 mm accuracy at high speed. Tecnau has equipped the Stacker s25 with a new gripper system. This system transports the sheets that are output by the cutter at high speeds carefully and safely to the stacker’s stop device and brings them to a standstill. The gripper mechanism prevents damage to the prints, especially in heavy ink coverage applications. The Stacker s25 is thus a natural choice for graphic arts production. “We were looking for a high performance cutting line to support

our entry into web printing with the ColorStream 6900. We chose Tecnau because, in our opinion, they offer very good technology and excellent value for money. Last month, almost 300 existing and prospective users of the still relatively new LED-UV technology met at KBA-Sheetfed in Radebeul to pick up first-hand information on the current state of development. Alongside printers from 21 different countries, numerous representatives of the supplier industry were also present. 30 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

BA-Sheetfed is one of the international technology leaders in the field of LED-UV. The first Rapida 106 with LED dryers went into production in mid-2014. Further milestones included the first medium-format perfector for 4-over-4 production with LED-UV at the end of 2014 and the first Rapida large format installation in 2015. In the meantime, some 50 half-, medium- and large-format Rapidas with LED drying are in use around the world. The majority of these installations can be found in Germany, Japan and France. But in Great


Britain, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Poland, the USA and other countries, too, Rapidas with LED-UV facilities are proving increasingly popular, especially among commercial printers. Alongside classic five- and six-colour coater presses, numerous eight-colour perfectors have also been equipped with this future-oriented drying technology.

Process benefits speak for themselves Enthusiastic KBA users have already discovered the benefits of LED-UV both for their own companies and for their print customers. Environmental friendliness and short delivery times are just two of many. Further important aspects include: - 50 per cent energy savings compared to HR-UV or IR/hot-air drying for coating applications; further savings potential can be realised through job-specific matching of the active dryer format in both the length and width directions - Up to 20 per cent less waste through the avoiding of scratches and set-off - Fewer quality complaints due to drying effects or colour changes which only become visible later in the overall production process - Up to 4 per cent paper savings - 10 to 20 per cent higher production speeds in perfecting mode

Objections such as - higher investment outlay for the dryers, - higher ink costs and - poorer de-inking of the printed products in later recycling are often discussed. One important objective of the symposium at KBA-Sheetfed was thus to demonstrate the potential of the technology, to present current and expected developments and improvements in dialogue with the supplier

industry, and to relieve the anxieties and reservations which naturally accompany any new technology.

Panel discussions with users and suppliers Three panel discussion sessions were moderated by Klaus-Peter Nicolay as an independent print expert, branch analyst and publisher of the magazine Druckmarkt. The first session with specialists from KBA-Sheetfed and further suppliers addressed the available system technology. Reports on practical experience, design solutions, handling recommendations and service topics were brought together under the headline “What does the LED-UV technology offer for a modern print company�. Tailored consumables packages were the topic of a second round of discussions with representatives from Toyo, Actega, Scheufelen, PaPrinting Review | May-June 2017 | 31

Alongside recent further developments in inks and coatings, the manufacturers spoke about standardised measuring and analysis methods, health and consumer protection, migration and food contact compliance, as well as the dimensional stability and de-inking properties of substrates. According to Dr. Wolfgang Rauh, head of department for materials and environmental protection at FOGRA, the success of de-inking seems to be dependent on the particular combination of ink and paper. In case of doubt, therefore, it is always advisable to consult with the ink and paper suppliers concerned. The third module was reserved for the users: Ingo Klotz from Druckerei Joh. Germany) described the role played by the LED-UV technology in their business concepts. They also compared the ROI of LED-UV to that of conventional alternatives, and provided information on the attainable quality standards and energy efficiency when using the technology. One of the aspects mentioned was the extended colour space, which often spares the need to print spot colours. Significantly higher densities are achieved and the print quality on uncoated papers comes close to that otherwise associated with coated stocks. As a result, new customers can be targeted in the premium quality segment. At the same time, new marketing strategies and approaches are required. LED-UV printing, however, is able to serve as a strong regional USP, enabling users to stand out above their competitors. Many of the participants confirmed that the LED-UV technology had opened to door to new markets.

Print demonstrations confirm the experience of users A series of print demonstrations confirmed the reported user experience. During the production on a Rapida 75 PRO and two Rapida 106 presses, the symposium guests were able to monitor energy consumption in real time via VisuEnergy. On the five-colour Rapida 75 PRO coater press, the focus was placed on production on uncoated papers with full ink coverage. It was also shown how the jobs could be passed on for immediate finishing on a Perfecta 132 TS high-speed cutter. The production of inmould and self-adhesive labels, with and without cold foil, was presented on a six-colour Rapida 106 with coater tower. After the job with cold foil transfer, the press was converted for production with an opaque white primer. The final job


was a cigarette pack forme on metallised card. All three images illustrated how LED-UV is gaining an every greater foothold also in packaging printing.

KBA then presented an absolute world first, namely LED-UV drying in conjunction with autonomous printing on an eight-colour Rapida 106 with an additional coater. “ErgoTronic AutoRun� enables printing and makeready processes to run without manual intervention in accordance with a predefined job list. The operator must only ensure that the required substrates, plates and other consumables are available. The cover and six sections of the recently published customer magazine KBA Report were produced in ultra-short runs on the makeready world champion Rapida 106. While doing so, the Rapida live app was used by the operator to maintain information on material and batch assignments. As a further highlight, KBA-Sheetfed demonstrated the die-cutting of packaging on a Rapida RDC 106 rotary die-cutter: For the first time with automatic stripping, a world novelty in a rotary process. After a fast job changeover, production continued with the kiss-cutting of self-adhesive labels. Job changeovers on the Rapida RDC 106 are significantly faster than on a flat-bed diecutter – a further plus for the rotary die-cutter for corresponding applications. The Koenig & Bauer group commenced on a high note in 2017, the year in which it celebrates its 200th anniversary, with a 20.7% increase in order intake to €321.5m. At €259.1m, group revenue remained at the previous year’s level, while order backlog widened by 6.4% to €619.9m. EBIT came to €5m, substantially exceeding the previous year’s figure of €2.1m. Double-digit percentage growth in order intake in all three segments In the Sheetfed segment, more service business and a substantial increase in orders for medium-format presses caused order intake to rise by 12% to €152m. At €150m, revenue fell 3% short of the previous year’s figure of €154.6m. In spite of better margins, EBIT of €4.6m was slightly below the previous year’s figure of €5.7m due to the lower revenue as well as development expenses for new products. The expanding flexo packaging activities have been assigned to the Digital & Web segment since the beginning of the year. The systems for flexible packaging, which is a market of the future, are also web printing presses. With order intake up 18.5% to €57.7m and revenue declining slightly to €30.4m, the order backlog rose from €95.5m to €103.5m. The optimisation of KBA-Flexotecnica (–€1.8m), high R&D expenses and the revenue shortfall left traces on the segment earnings of –€2.3m (2016: –€2.6m). More orders in security printing and glass decorating caused new business in the Special segment to rise by 25.3% to €125.7m. Ahead of the METPACK trade exhibition at the beginning of May, metal decorating orders fell short of the

Guidance for 2017 The management board expects group revenue to grow more dynamically over the further course of the year, leaving a positive effect on earnings. In the absence of any material deterioration in the underlying economic and political conditions impacting international business, group management expects to achieve organic growth to up to €1.25bn in group revenue and an EBIT margin of around 6% in 2017. Hong Kong International Printing & Packaging Fair The 12th Hong Kong International Printing & Packaging Fair, jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and CIEC Exhibition Company (HK) Ltd, came to a successful close at the AsiaWorld-Expo. The fair attracted over 15,000 buyers. Thematic zones attracted buyers to Printing & Packaging Fair This year’s Hong Kong International Printing & Packaging Fair featured more than 440 exhibitors from eight countries and regions, showcasing a broad spectrum of printing and packaging solutions. Catering to the printing and packaging needs of different industries, the fair comprised the De Luxe Zone, the Green Printing & Packaging Solutions zone, the Food & Beverage Packaging Solutions zone and two new zones: Printing and Packaging Solutions for Fashion & Accessories and Innovative Retail Display Solutions. Kleber Horita, Supplies Manager of Ofner, a food manufacturer from Brazil, joined the Printing & Packaging Fair for the first time. He met many suppliers from Hong Kong and the mainland and found suitable packaging solutions. He said he expected to place orders worth at least US$50,000. “The quality of the exhibitors is very good and the business matching meetings have been useful,” he said. “I really like the exhibition and will definitely come again.” Cross-sector collaboration is creating more opportunities for the printing and packaging industry. Hong Kong exhibitor Wide Ocean Printing Company, which has been collaborating with local illustrator Prudence Mak to feature her “Chocolate Rain” character in their products, showcased at this year’s fair a new line of products including red packets, calendars and jewellery boxes launched in collaboration with a Japanese designer, and successfully attracted the interest of buyers from the mainland, Hong Kong, Japan and the United States. The GEOMAN e:line that has been ordered by Vorländer consists of two four-high towers, a jaw folder PFN-25 and two manroland web systems reel splicers RSN 15. Furthermore, the manroland web systems PECOM-X Inline Control Systems for ink density (IDCμ), color register (IRC), cut-off register (ICC) and inline fan-out guarantee an ideal printing quality and low waste. Integrated gluing heads and a stitcher ensure the high production flexibility of the press. The production process will be monitored and controlled from the PECOM-X Control Center – the most innvovative control desk in the market with intuitive touch screens for operating. J&G Environmental Report Expansion After Launch Of Jag Product Line J&G Environmental’s range of JAG printing products is proving so successful that the company recently expanded their entire operation to keep up with demand. Alongside a new office and significantly larger product warehouse, the print waste management company is now investing in additional staff and more vehicles specifically for the product side of the business.

rian Smith came up with the original idea for J&G to diversify into printing consumables and has been at the helm since the launch of the JAG range two years ago. He attributes its rapid growth, both in terms of the number of products and rising sales figures, to a number of key factors. “J&G is a trusted name that promotes confidence within the printing industry and that ensured the perfect foundation for JAG from the outset,” he explained. “To honour that trust and build on it in a completely new area however we also needed to provide great quality products, fantastic levels of service and excellent technical after sales support. The fact we have come so far in such a relatively short space of time is down to the fact we have ensured that is the case, in addition to the dedication and hard work of our sales team.” Brian’s original concept of providing a complete ‘circular’ service by delivering the products needed and then collecting the waste they create has been

embraced by both existing and new clients. The company has many waste disposal customers now ordering JAG products but J&G has also seen the benefit work in reverse, with new customers starting to use their waste disposal service after purchasing the printing consumables. They have plenty to purchase too - from just six core products the JAG range has now grown to more than 200 since its launch in January 2015. “We started being asked, could we provide this or could we sell that and thought, well, why can’t we?” adds Brian. “I felt confident busy printing firms would see the concept of dealing with just one company for both consumables and waste disposal as providing advantages but never expected it to take off to this extent quite so quickly – we outgrew the warehouse we had expected to be suitable for the first few years, within a matter of months as a direct result.” Brian also acknowledges that the J&G name combined with his contacts and knowledge of the

printing industry, has helped secure business from top manufacturers, including Huber, whilst also ensuring every effort is taken so that the JAG range reflects the strong environment ethos J&G are built on. One of many happy new customers is Bedfordshire-based printing firm Newnorth, their Operations Manager Zak Kightley confirms. “We had no issue with our previous suppliers in terms of either products or service; in fact, we thought they’d be a hard act to follow. However, we are more than happy with our move to JAG last year, a decision we reached for two reasons. One was price. Although not the cheapest option, the products are certainly competitively priced. The second was that the JAG team were the only supplier to ask our expectations from an ink and then come with a solution to an issue we’d been experiencing for a couple of years previously; one that has saved us time and money. “Having met our expectations with the products, any initial concerns

about service levels have proven to be unfounded – everyone at JAG is awesome. Brian and his team have held our hands through any teething problems and also dug us out of the occasional hole!” Blandford-based J&G Environmental are accredited specialists in waste control to the printing industry with a 25-year track record of professionalism and reliability. The company currently manages the waste collection and disposal needs of more than 2000 UK print houses and newspaper groups and is increasingly diversifying to provide recycling and waste management options across a range of other areas. Changing Landscape Forecast For €159.2 Billion European Print Market In New Smithers Pira Report

In 2016 the printing market across Europe is valued at €159.2 billion, producing the equivalent of some 13.2 trillion A4 prints and consuming just over 68 million tonnes of printing substrates. Packaging represented 44.7% of the market by value in 2011; this rises to 56.6% by 2021. The European print market is driven from the end-user communication preferences of individuals, who have greater choice in communication with new channels including social media replacing print products. This is severe in newspaper, magazine, book, catalogue and graphic products, less so in packaging where the physical properties of the pack are key. “Much print promotes goods and services where it is in competition with other media, with new channels grabbing share of the expenditure, at the expense of print in many cases. Internet and social media, the digital channels including mobile, have grown strongly as brands and retailers develop their communications with customers and new retail channels come to the fore,” says Sean Smyth, author of the report. “There is evidence that print remains an important part of the mix, but

it has to be effective and cost-competitive to be used. The media landscape is continuing to develop with influential figures in advertising starting to question the effectiveness of some digital growth, increasingly asking for better metrics on the effectiveness of digital.” Print demand is driven by many factors, but the economic environment and advertising expenditure are important. Across Europe there is a great deal of economic uncertainty within the macro-economic landscape and it determines much of the confidence in government, business and individuals, and their ability or wish to spend money on print. Economic uncertainty has plagued Europe since the financial crash and successive Eurozone crises. Governments have tried many strategies from austerity to high spending programmes but uncertainty remains, depressing print expenditure. Despite the uncertainty, print remains an important communication channel that is competing for the attention of millions of European consumers. The methods of production are developing with new technologies being introduced that change the costs of print production at high quality. Printing remains a large business, with real growth in printed packaging as publication and graphics print declines across Europe. Printing Review | May-June 2017 | 49


Always stay nice and clean

Dirt in the cooling system causes consequential damage – The LIQUI MOLY radiator cleaner resolves problems at their root Nowadays radiators are highly cultivated systems that react exceptionally sensitively to impurities. Often it is the water pump that then gives up the ghost. Yet this is easy to avoid: with the LIQUI MOLY radiator cleaner, which reliably removes deposits and dirt from the cooling circuit. The work that radiators have to do nowadays is constantly growing. Downsizing and weight reduction mean that ever smaller and lighter coolant pumps have to discharge large quantities of heat, occurring in the full-load operation of the small motors. “Plus, significantly higher revs are being driven at the coolant pump than is the case in proven systems,” explains David Kaiser, head of Research and Development at LIQUI MOLY. Active thermal management of the motors also leads to the pumps sometimes being switched off during vehicle use, which fosters the formation of slime and deposits in the cooling system. Impurities, wear and dirt in the cooling water circuit drive up the wear of the water pump. Also, the particles attack the shaft seal. But the cause of the problem is not resolved by replacing the water pump. It is only a matter of time before the dirt in the cooling water causes problems for the new pump, too. “This is as if you were to change for dinner, but not wash your hands.

That’s why it is so important to clean the cooling system every time the radiator is worked on,” recommends David Kaiser. This is easy and affordable with the LIQUI MOLY radiator cleaner. It is simply added to the cooling water, the radiator is switched on and the motor left to run. The active ingredients then dissolve deposits, slime and dirt. After 10 to 30 minutes these are drained together with the old cooling water and the system is rinsed with water. Now it is clean and can once again deploy its full output. Also, the service life of the water pump is increased and problems with the cooling system are prevented. “For the same reason, the cooling system should also be cleaned when the radiator is replaced,” says David Kaiser. It is generally older vehicles in which the radiator is so heavily corroded that it has to be replaced. The damage is made worse by car owners that do not fill it with distilled water, but instead use tap water, and do not even use antifreeze. The consequence: Even more corrosion, even more impurities in the cooling water. “If only the radiator is replaced, then deposits and slime remain in the system and will continue to cause problems in the future,” says David Kaiser.
