TO U R I S M M A L AYS I A Looking ahead, the Malaysian ministry of tourism and ITB Berlin have announced that the south-east Asian nation will be the show’s official partner country in 2019. Announcing the reasoning behind the country’s choice of year, YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri bin Abdul Aziz, minister of tourism and culture for Malaysia explained: “Our target is to achieve 36 million tourist arrivals and RM168 billion in receipts

by the year 2020, based on the Malaysia Tourism Transformation Plan. Building up to this year will be very much like a ‘crescendo’, which is why we wanted to plan a major partnership with ITB Berlin in 2019.” Tourism Malaysia was last year recognised as Asia's Leading Tourist Board by voters at the World Travel Awards. The 2019 official partner country project is part of a much broader plan by Malaysia to increase awareness of the natural and human assets of the country over the next years. Kinabalu National Park and Gunung Mulu National Park in Malaysian Borneo and George Town cities and the archaeological heritage of the Lenggong Valley are four of the UNESCO designated World Heritage sites in Malaysia that will be highlighted. By the same token, the incredible variety of cultures and peoples that one encounters while travelling from one part of Malaysia to another are a key to the attractiveness of the destination.

CHANGI AIRPORT In Singapore, Changi Airport Group has welcomed the announcement by lowcost airline Norwegian of its intention to launch non-stop services between Singapore and London Gatwick in September.

The carrier we launch the four times with a 344-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft in a two-class configuration offering economy and premium cabins. With the launch of this new service, the number of weekly flights from Singapore to London will increase to 50. Changi Airport chief executive Lee Seow Hiang said: “We are delighted to welcome Norwegian to Changi’s portfolio of airlines in September; it will enhance options for Changi Airport's passengers as well as attract more UK visitors to Singapore. With changing consumer preferences and an improvement in aircraft technology, low-cost carriers have taken the opportunity to expand into the longhaul market. “We will continue to work with our airline partners to exploit other such opportunities to grow their operations at Changi.” Changi Airport is considered the World’s Leading Airport by World Travel Awards.

With a host of new tourism attractions, rapidly developing infrastructure and record visitor numbers, World Travel Awards host Shanghai is certainly justifying its place as the top tourist destination in China. Here we take a tour of what is new in the city.

Shanghai is China’s biggest city and the commercial centre of the country. It is also a major tourism destination in its own right. At its heart is the Bund, a famed waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings. Across the Huangpu River rises the Pudong district’s futuristic skyline, including the 632 metre Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, with distinctive pink spheres.

Among the most exciting recent developments in the hospitality sector has been news the Shanghai Tower has opened it sightseeing observatory on 118th floor to the public. The 546-meter-high observatory - named the Top of Shanghai - covers over 1,000 square meters, and lets visitors take a panoramic view of the city through large curtain glass walls. Visitors will be able to take three high-speed elevators to reach the observatory in the 632-meter,

China’s first indoor Hello Kitty theme park has also been confirmed to open its doors in October next year on the downtown Nanjing Road E. The theme park will spread over three floors, from eight to ten, in the Shanghai Mart retail mall, and will be nearly as big as five Olympic-size swimming pools. Shang-

Dongfang Road, Zhangyang Road and Tangqiaoxin Road will be beautified. A riverside innovation community will be created along the Zhangjiabang area, which will involve the Feicui Binjiang Art Centre, which is under construction, Tangqiao Park, Lujiazui Software Park, Zhuyuan green area and the Zuo’an 88 Innovation Park. The Tangqiao Park and Zhuyuan green space will also be renovated.

The newly renovated Building A is now officially open to the public, with all domestic and international flights at T1 have been moved to Building A, while the old Building B at T1 will be closed for reconstruction. For passengers on international flights, 46 check-in and 27 frontier inspection counters have been set up, more than double the number which available at the old terminal.

VISITORS Finally, figures have revealed Shanghai received 4.45 million tourists during the seven-day Spring Festival holiday, up 10.9 per cent from last year. Among the major tourist attractions, Oriental Pearl TV Tower had more than 140,000 visitors, up 9 per cent, while Shanghai Science & Technology Museum welcomed 148,600 - a rise of 19 per cent, Shanghai Tourism Administration announced. Shanghai Zoo, Jinmao Tower, Madame Tussauds and Fengjing Water Town also enticed more visitors than last year, ranging from 8.9 to 49 per cent.

AUSTRALASIA With a booming cruise market and a host of top-level tourism events headed for the region, Australasian tourism is booming. Here we bring you the latest headlines. The Australian cruise market grew by 21 per cent in 2016, with 1,281,159 Australians taking a cruise last year. The growth of 222,378 passengers is the biggest increase on record, according to the Cruise Lines International Association. CLIA Australasia managing director, Joel Katz said: “In 2016, Australia achieved the equivalent of 5.3 per cent market penetration, that’s one in 19 Australians taking a cruise, making this the highest per capita ratio in the world. The growing capacity and the wide variety of cruising

options being offered are capturing the imagination of Australians, with more Australians discovering that cruising is an easy, relaxing and value for money way to holiday. The most popular cruises are local itineraries in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, accounting for 76.7 per cent of Australian cruise passengers, growing by 30 per cent year on year. “With many of these local cruises calling at the 34 regional ports and anchorag-

es around the Australian coastline, local communities benefit from the injection of valuable tourist dollars into the local economies,” added Katz.

ROUTE ASIA The annual Routes Asia air service development forum has officially been handed over to the Australian city of Brisbane. Routes Asia brings together airlines, airports, tourism authorities and governments to plan new flights and increase existing services.

The 2018 event will be hosted by Brisbane Airport Corporation, Brisbane Marketing, Tourism Australia and Tourism Events Queensland at Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The capital of Queensland, Brisbane saw a record high of nearly 1.2 million international visitors in the year ending September 2016, 9.6 per cent more than the previous 12 months. There was particularly strong growth from China, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong. Brisbane Airport handled more than 22 million passengers in 2015 and its capacity will double when a second runway opens in 2020.

Brisbane is the gateway to Queensland the Sunshine State - which is famous for attractions such as the Gold Coast and Great Barrier Reef. Queensland is also experiencing a boom in the number of international travellers, especially from China. Julieanne Alroe, Brisbane Airport Corporation managing director said: “The city is ready and waiting to offer the warmest of Queensland welcomes to delegates attending Routes Asia in Brisbane in 2018. March is the perfect time to visit Brisbane.”

R OYA L C A R I B B E A N Finally, Royal Caribbean - recognised as Australasia's Leading Cruise Line by the

World Travel Awards - has unveiled future plans for the first Quantum Ultra-class ship to be based in the Asia-Pacific region. Set to be launched in spring 2019, the yet-to-be-named ship will be the next evolution of the ground-breaking Quantum class and will join her sister ships, Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas. The announcement was made as Royal Caribbean unveiled its full roster of 2018-19 China, Singapore and Australia itineraries. Almost a decade on from Royal Caribbean’s first cruise in China, the cruise line further bolsters its commitment to the market by dedicating a line-up of its most technologically advanced ships to the rapidly growing market. The new ship will specifically be designed for guests in the region, featuring even more cutting-edge and unprecedented experiences and amenities. Voyager of the Seas will have her first full season in Singapore in 2018-19, offering three to seven-night adventures throughout south-east Asia, with stops that include ports in Thailand and Malaysia. FIFA Confederations Cup 2017/FIFA World Cup 2018 St. Petersburg city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tourism is one of the key sectors of the city’s economy. St. Petersburg welcomes up to seven million tourists each year, more than any other city in Russia. In the same artistic tradition, a new state-of-theart 70,000-seat stadium is being constructed on Krestovsky Island facing the Baltic Sea. Resembling a spaceship, it was designed by the famous architect Kisho Kurokawa. The stadium will have a retractable pitch, ensuring that the quality of the turf remains high regardless of the weather. The Saint Petersburg Stadium in Saint Petersburg will host the final of FIFA Confederations Cup on 2 July 2017 and the semi-final of FIFA World Cup on 10 July 2018. To travel without visa The travelers arriving to St. Petersburg by sea (ferry or cruise ship) can get 72 hours visa-free entry and stay in the city if they have the tour program (voucher). Purchase an airline ticket to Helsinki There are more than 10 airlines that provide direct flights from European cities to Helsinki

2. Book a ferry cabin St. Peter Line ferries sail from Helsinki every two days according to schedule (at approximately 6 p.m.). Travel time is about 13–15 hours. Estimated time of arrival in Saint Petersburg is 9 a.m. the following day. The ferry sails back from Saint Petersburg 3 days later. 3. Book a transfer from the seaport of Saint Petersburg The ferry company will provide a transfer service to the city centre and also to some hotels. It is a paid service, but it is mandatory if you would like to purchase a visa-free cruise travel. The transfer fee is 25 euro.
