With World Travel Awards-host Sandals Resorts International continuing its expansion across the Caribbean and Cuba remerging as a major tourism destination, hospitality in the region is in rude health. Here Breaking Travel News brings you the latest.

The biggest news in Caribbean tourism in 2016 is the reopening of Cuba to visitors from the United States. Leading the return is Delta Air Lines, which will begin daily service to Havana, Cuba, from Atlanta, Miami and New York–JFK on December 1st following an announcement by the US department of transportation. Considered North America’s Leading Airline to the Caribbean by World Travel Awards, Delta earlier thanked the DOT for awarding the

airline the ability to resume operating nonstop scheduled service to Cuba for the first time in almost 55 years. Flights went on sales on September 10th. “We are celebrating our long-awaited and historic return to Cuba, and we reaffirm our thanks to Secretary Foxx and his team as well as the US state department for granting us the authority to operate this service,” said Nicolas Ferri, Delta vice president, Latin America and the Caribbean. “This December,

we look forward to serving customers with the excellent customer service and operational performance they expect from Delta while reuniting families and supporting a new generation of travellers seeking to engage and explore this unique destination.” Delta flights between New York-JFK and Havana will connect the New York City area, home to the second largest Cuban-American population, to Cuba’s political, cultural and economic capital. Atlanta service will provide more than 150 US cities with one-stop access to Cuba from the world’s largest hub, with more seats, destinations and flights than any other carrier. Delta’s Miami-Havana flights will serve the largest population of Cuban-Americans in the US. Delta is the

SANDALS World Travel Awards-host Sandals Resorts International has also been making headlines, breaking ground on a multi-million dollar expansion of its Dover Beach property in Barbados. The project will see the construction of an additional 222 rooms and suites at the property. Dubbed Sandals Barbados “Phase II”, this expansion when complete in November 2017, will add to the existing 280-room count and firmly place the property as the largest Sandals resort in the Eastern Caribbean.

BREAKING TRAVEL NEWS SPOTLIGHT ON:

With the launch of Highway 2000, Jamaican tourism is taking to the fast lane. With government funds also being earmarked to develop the sector, Breaking Travel News here brings you the latest from this Caribbean hotspot.

The biggest news in Jamaica this year is the new US$700m highway which has opened on the island - the North-South link of Highway 2000. The new road will dramatically reduce travel times between the north and south coasts, paving the way for speedier tourist transfers. Travel time from Kingston to the north coast town of Ocho Rios, which is very

popular with tourists, will be approximately 30 minutes shorter. Likewise, it means that visitors to Jamaica have more options in terms of which airport they use. For example, visitors staying in Ocho Rios now have the option of landing in Montego Bayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sangster International Airport, or Kingstonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Norman Manley International airport, and having the same travel time to their resorts.

Policy & Strategy, aimed at developing community tourism island-wide to diversify the island’s tourism product. Minister Bartlett said it would serve as a pilot project for community tourism, adding that he hoped it could be replicated across the island. The facility financed by the Tourism Enhancement Fund, serves as counterpart funding for the Compete Caribbean Initiative which has committed some US $627,000 to date, to develop community tourism in the area. The loan scheme is being administered by Jamaica National Small Business Loans.

Cruise ship passengers arriving in the Ocho Rios port will also be able to easily schedule visits to the historical and cultural sights of Spanish Town and Kingston, and return with ample time for their ship’s departure. The new North-South link of Highway 2000 is also expected to drive additional tourism developments. Plans are already in place for the construction of three hotels with nearly 2,400 rooms in the Mammee Bay area, as well as nearly 600 housing units along the highway corridor. The highway was constructed by China Harbour Engineer-

ing Company and is a four-to-six lane, 66-kilometre motorway. Jamaica director of tourism, Paul Pennicook, said: “The newly opened NorthSouth Highway will open up significant development opportunities and make Kingston more accessible from our major tourist regions. Not only will these developments increase tourism, but will directly benefit the local people and generate new jobs, especially for Jamaica’s next generation of up and coming tourism professionals.”

TO U R I S M C R E D I T In a further boost to the island’s hospitality sector, minister of tourism Edmund Bartlett has launched a special J$20 million revolving loan facility to boost the compliance of small tourism properties, attractions and businesses on Jamaica’s eco-friendly south coast. The initiative for community tourism enterprises in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth, forms part of the ministry National Community Tourism

Applicants will be able to access loans of up to J$2 million at a highly subsidised interest rate of three per cent per annum for five years. Several small business operators present at the launch last week signed loan applications on the spot. Minister Bartlett said the scheme would enable the enterprises in Treasure Beach to become compliant and more appealing, which he said is crucial to positioning the area as a unique destination offering a rustic luxury experience which the rich and famous seek when they want to escape from the formal luxurious settings that are characteristic of some of the destinations that we know, where the link with nature is never broken but the quality of the creature comforts are still at the highest level.

With Marriott International on the threshold of completing the takeover of Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Delta Air Lines investing millions on the redevelopment of LaGuardia Airport in New York, it’s all happening in North American tourism. Here Breaking Travel News brings you the biggest headlines. Top of the agenda for hospitality in North America this year is the merger between two industry heavyweights Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Marriott International. Creating the largest hotel company in the world, the deal was agreed earlier this year. Separate special stockholder meetings by both companies approved the deal in the spring.

Arne Sorenson, Marriott president and chief executive officer, said of the deal: “With the successful stockholder approval milestone, we are that much closer to completing our transaction. Our teams continue to plan the integration of our two companies, and we are committed to a timely and smooth transition. We appreciate the stockholders’ vote of confidence in our ability to drive long-term value and opportunity as a combined company.”

At closing Starwood stockholders will receive 0.8 shares of Marriott common stock plus $21.00 in cash for each share of Starwood common stock. Thomas Mangas, Starwood chief executive officer, stated: “There is no doubt that this transaction puts our company on the best path forward and we remain excited about the opportunity this combination will create for our stockholders, associates, owners and guests.” The parties have cleared the pre-merger antitrust review in the United States and Canada and multiple other jurisdictions, including the European Union. The transaction remains on track to close mid-2016.

LAGUARDIA AIRPORT In New York, Delta and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey have revealed they will partner to replace Terminals C and D at LaGuardia Airport with a state-of-the-art facility. The project, which was approved earlier by PANYNJ, is part of a new lease agreement to be

negotiated at the airport through 2050. The authority has committed, as part of the agreement, $600 million to facilitate construction of the terminal and other supporting infrastructure. “Replacing these outmoded terminals is a major step forward in our reimagining of LaGuardia into a 21st-century, worldclass airport worthy of the Empire State,” said New York governor Andrew Cuomo. “I thank Delta for their partnership and welcome the many visitors who will enter through their new terminals.” US vice president Joe Biden and governor Cuomo last year introduced a plan to redesign and rebuild New York-LGA to include a new $4 billion central terminal building and a grand central hall unifying the airport’s terminals. Delta has been a partner in that plan since the beginning. Like the new central terminal building, Delta’s new facility will be located closer to the Grand Central Parkway, allowing for additional taxiway space and a more efficient airfield.

“Today marks another proud moment in Delta’s on-going commitment to providing an exceptional experience for New Yorkers,” said Delta chief executive Ed Bastian. “Our participation in this historic project builds on the more than $2 billion Delta has invested in New York over the past seven years.” Delta’s new terminal at LGA will consist of 37 gates located on four concourses connected by a centralised check-in lobby, security checkpoint, and baggage claim. Of the 37 gates, 33 will have access to dual taxi lanes, which will greatly improve airfield efficiency, resulting in reduced taxi time to and from the gate before take-off and after landing. The construction will commence as soon as possible, following regulatory approvals and final lease negotiations.

The Maldives will welcome World Travel Awards as host of the Grand Final 2016. The ceremony will welcome winners from the six regional World Travel Awards Gala Ceremonies, with the events this year set to take place in Zanzibar, Dubai, Peru, Turkey, Jamaica and Vietnam. Republic of the Maldives is a sovereign archipelagic nation positioned in the Indian Ocean. Notably the south Asian island nation has no counterpart in the entire world in terms of its unique geography and topography. The Maldives encompass more than 99 % of the sea and less than one per cent of the land. The 99 per cent of the sea is home to one of the most diverse marine treasures of the world. There are channels of various sizes between the atolls used for navigation. For efficient administrative functioning, the 26 natural atolls are categorised into 20 administrative divisions. Particularly the island nation is located in a strategic area with access to major international sea routes in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives, located on top of a vast underwater mountain range have around 1190 islands and sandbanks. The pearl string like islands covers a land area of no less than 298 km2. All the islands are encircled by a lagoon blessed with crystal clear water. These islands are protected by a reef structure, housing one of the most exclusive and spectacular underwater life.
