WORLD TRAVEL AWARDS CARIBBEAN & NORTH AMERICA GALA CEREMONY On behalf of World Travel Awards, I warmly welcome you all to our Caribbean & North America Gala Ceremony 2015, this year hosted here in the paradise islands of the Bahamas. What better place to celebrate the best of regional hospitality than right here in one of the most desirable locations anywhere on earth? I hope you’ve had a chance to explore a little before sitting down with us this evening and have taken in some of the wonders on offer here.

This is the second time World Travel Awards has visited the Bahamas, with Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort having welcomed us way back in 1998. So much has changed, and so much has stayed the same since then. The Caribbean remains a leader in global tourism, but has grown stronger than ever. More flights, new resorts, emerging brands and rising standards have all driven the region forward, and it is an honour for us to recognise the drivers of this change this evening.

Tonight’s exceptional event is part of our year-long Grand Tour 2015 to celebrate the world’s outstanding travel brands, covering six continents and featuring over 9,000 nominees.

We began in May at the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach in the United Arab Emirates with our Middle East Ceremony and were welcomed to Kempinski Seychelles Resort in June for our Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony. Both events were warmly received, leaving us in a strong position for the rest of the year.

This was followed by our visit to Forte Village, Italy, for the Europe Gala Ceremony, where over 300 industry leaders from across the region joined us on

the beautiful beaches of Sardinia. Most recently we were welcomed to the Colombian capital of Bogotá for our Latin America Gala Ceremony – an event considered a roaring success by tourism insiders in Central and South America.

Also on our agenda for 2015 is the InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong, which will stage our Asia & Australasia Gala Ceremony later this month, before we finish with the World Travel Awards Grand Final at Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort in El Jadida, Morocco, in December.

Each year our locations, categories, nominees and, most importantly, the number of voting travel professionals increases exponentially, revealing the tremendous public demand for the recommendation a World Travel Award signifies. The recognition we offer is one of a kind, as no other organisation has the experience, the gravitas, or the loyal following of more than half of a million travel, tourism and hospitality professionals we possess.

With the World Travel Awards arriving in the Bahamas for the Caribbean & North America Gala Ceremony 2015, Breaking Travel News here brings you the latest from across the region.

Starting with our hosts this evening, Sandals Resorts International, the leading chain of luxury all-inclusive Caribbean resorts, has confirmed expansion plans for Sandals Barbados, which opened in the St. Lawrence Gap area in January this year. According to chief executive Adam Stewart, plans to expand the resort were accelerated only six months after opening when positive reviews increased demand for the Barbados all-inclusive resort.

With its prime beachside location and luxurious guest accommodations, which currently include 280 rooms, 11 specialty dining choices (including Sandals Resorts’ first Indian cuisine restaurant), swim-up suites, butler service and ro-

mantic fire pits, the resort is already a favourite in the destination. Satisfied visitors have praised the Barbados all-inclusive resort’s exclusive amenities, such as the indoor and outdoor soaking tubs, and its three unique villages, including the Ocean Village, the Caribbean Village and the Crystal Lagoon Village.

Now, Sandals Barbados has plans to add 186 new rooms, all in suite-level categories, as well as a newly-expanded Red Lane Spa and new entertainment facilities. Stewart added: “Sandals Resorts is committed to making the all-inclusive resort experience better, more luxurious and more sophisticated every day.

“The reviews our newest Barbados all-inclusive resort is enjoying are proof that the care we’re taking to offer a world-class product and impeccable service standards in a relaxed and playful way is what today’s vacationers want.

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE Norwegian Cruise Line has also been creating waves in the Caribbean, recently revealing Norwegian Epic will return to Florida in November 2016 after more than a year in Europe. The ship will become line’s largest ship to homeport from Port Canaveral. Norwegian will offer Freestyle Cruising at its finest aboard Norwegian Epic with a series of Eastern and Western Caribbean and

Bahamas itineraries ranging in length from three, four, six and seven days - a sure opportunity to fit any schedule or itinerary preference.

Norwegian Epic’s seven-day Eastern Caribbean itinerary will be a beach-lover’s paradise with stops in Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas.

CARIBBEAN AIRLINES In aviation, Caribbean Airlines - considered the Caribbean’s Leading Airline - recently launched its fall schedule. The new plan is designed to facilitate better connectivity within the Caribbean and between North and South America. It will feature daily service to/from Grenada and Barbados, where flights will connect to Caribbean Airlines’ flight bank at Piarco International Airport, Trinidad, to various destinations throughout the Caribbean Airlines network, including Miami, New York, Toronto, Jamaica, Guyana and the Bahamas.

“The schedule gives our valued customers an early start, late evening returns and easy connections in Piarco with “walk off and walk on” service soon to be implemented similar to the service provided to our Guyana passengers. It means that our customers’ precious time can be put to the best use.”

DiLollo continued: “CAL is in the exclusive position of having hubs in the southern Caribbean in Trinidad & Tobago and in the northern Caribbean in Jamaica. In this way, it is uniquely positioned to provide visitors to and citizens of the region with many travel options.”

Caribbean Airlines chief executive Michael DiLollo is also pleased that the airline is on a path to better serve its valued customers.

He commented: “Our new fall schedule is built for easy connectivity to destinations within and outside the Caribbean region. The timing of the services from Barbados and Grenada to/from Piarco, Trinidad with connections throughout our network, are ideal for business and leisure travellers.

The Bahamas, long-known for beautiful, crystal clear waters, powder soft white sand beaches and near-perfect, year-round weather, are also known for their passion and commitment to sports.

The destination hosts a variety of sporting events, such as the IAAF World Relays earlier this year, the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl, the LPGA Silk Classic Tournament, and has established many important partnerships with sports teams such as the NBA’s Miami Heat.

As such, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism has formed partnerships with some of the most influential sports entities in this area and has created and retained unique, authentic signature sporting events with them, with Miami Heat being one of the flagship teams.

Approximately 85 per cent of the visitors that come to The Bahamas are from the US and many of them hail from the Florida market.

Signing a five-year partnership contract in 2013, The Bahamas played host to a variety of Miami Heat events at the end of September in the lead-up to the beginning of the season.

The entire Hartford Wing of One&Only Ocean Club is being renovated, with guest rooms increasing in size by 110 square feet offering an expansive terrace or balcony with views of the ocean and lush resort gardens. In addition, each room will have a complete makeover including new furnishings, fabrics and colour schemes that amplify the distinctive palette of The Bahamas - cerulean blues, aquamarine and the bleached white of Bahamian sand.

The Hartford Courtyard will be completely redesigned to allow for a luxurious relaxation experience for guests. As always, to underscore One&Only Ocean Club’s unique atmosphere, every guest is served by a butler whose role is to cater to each guest’s comfort, with intuitive anticipation of guest needs and desires.

“The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism continues in its resolve to form strong strategic partnerships with leading sports organisations. DELTA AIR LINES At the same time, Delta continues to expand its network in Latin America and the Caribbean with service from Atlanta to Eleuthera and Marsh Harbor in the Bahamas starting in December. In addition, the airline will increase its service to Georgetown from three times a week to daily, effective December 19th.

The new routes will operate using the 65-seat EV-CJ7 aircraft operated by ExpressJet Airlines and are available for sale on delta.com.

Delta customers traveling from other United States cities will enjoy convenient, one-stop connections through Atlanta to these resort destinations.

ONE&ONLY OCEAN CLUB Long recognised as one of the world’s most exclusive resorts, the iconic One&Only Ocean Club resort has unveiled planned enhancements to raise the bar on ultra-luxury in The Bahamas. The improvements will include completely renovated and expanded guest rooms and suites in the Hartford Wing and expansion of dining options within Dune restaurant by Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

Once completed, the resort will retain what guests have always loved – a sense of exclusive privacy in a relaxed setting with a beachfront unsurpassed in The Bahamas. Guests will also discover many new luxury experiences, along with a heightened level of service.

Dining will also be redefined with new twists added to Dune by Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten – a long-time favourite for guests and local residents alike. In addition to the current dining experience at Dune, One&Only Ocean Club will expand both the restaurant and the Dune Deck, not only enabling more guests to enjoy the incredible sea views but also expanding the culinary choices for guests and residents.

The renovations are expected to be completed in November this year.

With so much happening in North American hospitality it can be difficult to keep up. Here Breaking Travel News brings you the latest headlines from some of the most prestigious World Travel Awards winners and partners as they prepare to compete at the Caribbean & North America Gala Ceremony 2015.

Delta recently logged the airline’s 95th day with zero cancelled flights in 2015, matching a milestone of operational excellence. In all of 2014, Delta had 95 such non-cancellation days - a record at the time. Put another way, Delta is well-positioned to set a new record for days without flight cancellations – known in the industry as “completion factor” - in 2015.

“At nearly four months ahead of last year’s pace, I can’t wait to see what the completion

factor record for 2015 will be, thanks to Delta people’s efforts,” said Gil West, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Delta.

“For our customers, running an operation where cancelations are few and far between is the foundation for a consistently outstanding experience flying Delta.”

In aviation terms, Delta has now achieved 95 days of “100 per cent mainline completion factor”. That simply means all of Delta’s scheduled flights were “com-

pleted” during those days - no easy feat on any given day when outside forces such as weather can intervene. Delta flies thousands of people each day.

During the busy summer schedule this year the airline had around 3,000 or more departures every day. In September, Delta had more than 2,800 scheduled daily departures.

Many operational teams expect Delta to achieve 100 days in September, a

feat that has never been recorded in aviation history.

LAS VEGAS The multi-platinum-selling artist, fourtime Grammy Award winner and music icon, Lionel Richie has confirmed his headlining Las Vegas residency show ‘Lionel Richie - All the Hits’ from Wednesday April 27th, 2016. Just the latest attraction to arrive in Vegas – considered North America’s Leading Destination by World Travel Awards.

Promoted by Live Nation and Caesar’s Entertainment Lionel Richie will be performing a variety of his best known hits including ‘All night long’ and ‘Hello’.

“As one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, with several #1 records and an unparalleled collection of awards and honours, Lionel Richie is undoubtedly a legendary artist and music icon, and we anxiously look forward to having him join the exciting line-up we have planned for The AXIS next year, further

cementing Planet Hollywood’s position as the city’s premiere entertainment destination,” said David Hoenemeyer, regional president of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

AVIS BUDGET GROUP Finally, Avis Budget Group recently confirmed its directors have selected Larry De Shon as the company’s next chief executive officer, succeeding Ronald Nelson, who has held the position since 2006. De Shon, the company’s president, international, will become president and chief operating officer effective October 1, 2015, and will assume the role of chief executive on January 1st, 2016.

Nelson, who became chairman of the board of Avis Budget Group in 2006, will continue as executive chairman after De Shon assumes the chief executive role to ensure a smooth transition of his responsibilities. De Shon, 56, has been in his current position since January 1st, 2015, where he has been responsible for

overseeing all of the company’s brands in the International region. He joined the company in 2006 and has previously overseen Avis Budget’s Europe, Middle East and Africa and US operations.

Avis Budget Group is home to Avis, considered North America’s Leading Car Rental Company by the World Travel Awards.

“Larry and David have an extremely strong track record of producing results and are eminently qualified for their new positions. We have worked diligently with the board over the past several years to successfully develop and prepare them for their new roles. Bogotá is the capital and largest city in Colombia. Located in the geographical heart of America, it is the highest metropolis on the continent, home to more than eight million people in total at an altitude of more than 2,600 meters above sea level. Bogotá, in other words, is a city of altitude.

In nearly 500 years of history, Bogotá has been filled with honours and glory. Not in vain is it considered a boundless city which enchants with its historic architecture, rich culture and the thousand and one dining options.

HISTORIC CENTRE La Candelaria and the surrounding area are known as the Historic Centre, and are the visible reflection of the Spanish influence on the city. Unlike other capitals, Bogotá’s avenues are identified by numbers and not by names, as happens in other cities on the continent.

Bogotá’s historic centre is the place with the highest concentration of tourist attractions in the city. Arguably it has a hundred symbolic places. Alongside the great capitals of the world, the city has prioritised visitors, allowing them to walk freely, and has determined that tours through the historic centre are made by walkways, which are accompanied by colourful gardens, cultural events and musical tunes.

Places to see and enjoy are endless, but highlights include the Nariño Palace, seat of the National Government, El Capitolio Congress’ seat, La Catedral Primada, Liévano Palace, headquarters of the Mayor, Major College of Saint Bartholomew, San Carlos Palace, former presidential house, Colón Theatre, Coin’s House Botero’s Museum, San Agustín Cloister, Gold Museum, Monserrate Sanctuary, La Quinta de Bolivar and Chorro de Quevedo Square, among many others.

Another area that the city has positioned as an area of huge cultural, culinary and tourist importance is the International Centre. Located ten minutes from downtown heading north, this point becomes the place where the urban renewal of Bogotá begins.

The transition from one era to another is evident and the possibilities of enjoying a distinguished Bogotá, appear. The International centre originates from city’s growth as it forced itself into a process of renovation and renewal. The place still has buildings with immense historical significance, but also one can appreciate modern buildings, large hotels, convention centres, entertainment and latest generation streets.

Going downtown is wonderful and an experience nobody will forget, because it allows the visitor to get in to gracious streets and to witness houses over 200 years old.

True, the tour of the International centre is not prolonged or extensive; but tourists are overwhelmed by the green freshness of the place, the rich cuisine, huge squares and even a good bar. Right there is located the Bavaria Central Park, District Planetarium, National Museum, Independence’s Park, Modern Art Mu-

seum, the National Library, Jorge Eliecer Gaitan Theatre and the Colpatria building, currently the highest in the country.

At the International Centre, everything is distributed harmoniously and it can be easily intimate with a modernist architecture where dreams come true.

Going north from the vicinity of the International centre is located Chapinero.

The story tells this was a remote village in the city centre with huge estates; but when tram opened road in the middle of fields and pastures towards this sector of Bogotรก, the wealthy families chose to locate their homes, built their casasquintas and the city grew northward.

The sector and its people never moved away from modernity and they were transforming the sector at par with the demands of the world, being awarded because of the construction of wide roads, the tram service and the establishment of new scenarios for entertainment, rest and trade.

The constant movement of people, the arrival of new vertical buildings, the layout of the road and the street furniture; they symbolise the time passage and determine at least one hundred years between the historic and current. It is clear that every place has its place and time in history; but no one could say that Chapinero is not a classic, traditional sector of Bogotรก.

The city is inclusive and seeks to treat each of its residents and visitors as an equal. The city currently has a range of commercial services focused on LGBT diversity, from bars, spas, shops, restaurants and clubs.

World Ski Awards has revealed A-ROSA Kitzbühel will host its annual Gala Ceremony for the third consecutive year.

A-ROSA Kitzbühel will welcome industry leaders to the World Ski Awards on November 20th-22nd for a three day programme of unrivalled networking events, dinners, and exclusive ski experience activities.

The highlight of the event will be the red carpet World Ski Awards Gala Ceremony 2015 itself on the evening of November 21st. Ski tourism figureheads and market leaders from North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Australasia will be in attendance as the World Ski Awards winners are unveiled.
