ABOUT the
ORGANIZATION In 2017, the Government of Canada, Networks of Centres of Excellence of Canada (NCE) provided $1.6 million over four years (2017-2021) to create the Supply Chain Advancement Network in Health (SCAN Health). Hosted by the University of Windsor's Odette School of Business, SCAN Health is an International Knowledge Translation Platform (NCEIKTP) funded to accelerate knowledge translation and address key problems, challenges and opportunities in Canada and around the globe.

Spanning five countries, including Australia, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada - and with over one hundred partners from industry, healthcare, government, and academia - the network will enable the exchange of information and expertise to accelerate the implementation of healthcare supply chain best practices around the world. By mobilizing supply chain best practices to track health products and processes to patient outcomes, we can significantly reduce medical error, increase health system sustainability, and drive economic growth for companies globally.

The success of SCAN Health's first year in operation has been exceptional. The organization's outstanding results are attributable to the leadership of SCAN Health's dynamic CEO, Dr. Anne Snowdon, the support of the Government of Canada's Networks of Centres of Excellence, the commitment of a world-class Board of Directors, an expansive network of committed partners in Canada and internationally, and a phenomenal operating team. SCAN Health's collaboration model brings together stakeholders from, industry, government, healthcare, academia, and the general citizenry to enable the exchange of information and expertise, which in turn will accelerate the implementation of healthcare supply chain best practices around the world. The SCAN Health network currently spans five countries - Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Australia. In just its first year, SCAN Health has achieved substantial penetration and continues to generate interest from and engagement of new partners and collaborators in international jurisdictions. As I reflect on our first year and look to the future, I am confident that the SCAN Health team and network will continue to expand their reach, penetration and capacity to mobilize expert knowledge and research evidence. This will enable health systems to accelerate, scale, and measure the transformation of their supply chains. Advancing the received knowledge of the value of effective supply chains in healthcare, while supporting the creation of the related leadership capacity, will contribute to achieving value for citizens and other stakeholders in Canada and worldwide.

It has been an extraordinary year of growth and impact for SCAN Health. I am privileged to work with such a dynamic team, guided by the outstanding expertise and leadership of such a committed Board of Directors. I am grateful to our distinguished Expert Advisory Council and Working Group members for their tremendous counsel and guidance in both the successful planning and implementation of SCAN Health's five strategic initiatives. The commitment of our many partners, spanning five countries and from around the world, make it possible to mobilize and exchange knowledge of the value and impact of supply chain in healthcare to transform our systems from cost centres to economic engines while improving health outcomes. In our first year, SCAN Health set an ambitious goal to map the journey to health sector supply chain transformation. I am immensely proud of the SCAN Health team for their capacity to execute deliverables beyond expectations including three exceptional projects: the Annual Global Networking Event, the Industry Design Competition, and the Virtual Business Case Competition in our inaugural year. These three strategic initiatives enabled partners and participants from industry, healthcare, government, and academia to exchange knowledge and foster collaboration to drive supply chain solutions based on real-world health system challenges. Hosted by the Healthcare Transformation Group in St. Louis, MO, U.S., the Annual Global Networking Event created unique opportunities for international exchange and dialogue to accelerate adoption and transformation of healthcare to create value for health systems, businesses, and populations. The Virtual Business Case Competition offered students a rare opportunity to build leadership capacity by engaging leaders, academics, industry professionals, and health system experts on a case to scale a program across the United Kingdom's National Health Service. Finally, the Industry Design Competition enabled international industry teams and healthcare organizations to exchange knowledge and co-design effective solutions to address a Canadian health system issue that holds potential for worldwide impact. By engaging and collaborating with network partners through our strategic initiatives, we have built the foundation to achieve supply chain visibility. I am confident SCAN Health has the capacity to mobilize supply chain best practices to track health products and processes to patient outcomes resulting in value based procurement. Together, we can significantly reduce medical error, increase health system sustainability, and drive economic growth through strategic supply chain transformation.

The Inaugural Annual Networking Event took place on September 26th, 2017 in St. Louis, Missouri. This event was a pre-conference opportunity hosted by the Healthcare Transformation Group, which is comprised of five distinguished healthcare systems, Mercy Health, Geisinger Health System, Intermountain Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, and Mayo Clinic.
International experts from health systems, industry, government, and academia explored progress to date and created a road map for international collaboration among the U.S., Canada, the UK, the Netherlands, and Australia to accelerate strategic supply chain implementation to achieve efficiency, quality, and safety, nationally and globally. The Annual Networking Event has increased SCAN Health's global profile and brand reputation through inviting global partners to participate and share their country's journey towards excellence in supply chain health system transformation.
This global event highlighted supply chain initiatives across five countries, the motivation, the benefit and challenges to scaling supply chain best practices in healthcare. This event created unique opportunities for international knowledge exchange to accelerate the adoption and transformation of supply chain infrastructure to create value for patients, clinicians, health systems, and industry.

Design Competition The SCAN Health Design Competition is a virtual, international design competition that focuses on a real-world health system challenge. The Design Competition mobilizes health system leaders to identify a key supply chain challenge they are facing and to create a Design Competition Challenge for industry and global partners to respond to with solutions and expertise that offer global recognition for winning teams. The Design Competition strategy enables industry to build relationships with health systems in a unique competition environment. It offers value to industry partners to better understand the challenges health systems are facing and conversely, enable health leaders to learn how health system assets can be engaged to codesign a solution. "Our team's effort to advance the dialogue and pursue innovation around the healthcare supply chain is deeply rooted in our commitment to equip health systems with the ecosystem they need to provide patient care sustainably and safely." -Mr. Peter Brereton, President & CEO S S nc.
The Design Competition challenge sought solutions to advance Alberta Health Services' (AHS) strategy to implement point of care supply chain tools to track and trace products, care processes and clinician teams to offer tracking and traceability of care processes in surgical programs across the province. "Participating as the case subject of this design competition has given AHS access to a wealth of innovative ideas that have the potential to improve patient safety and quality of care." said Dr. Verna Yiu, President and CEO of AHS, "AHS is looking at all areas of the health system to improve efficiencies and deliver the best healthcare possible to Albertans. That includes areas we don't often think about, such as supply chain infrastructure. We have much to learn from industry leaders who participated in this inaugural design competition, and will look forward to considering their insights."

Virtual Business Case Competition The Virtual Business Case Competition is the first of four invitational business case competitions designed to build leadership capacity for excellence and innovation in supply chain and logistics strategies in global health systems. This international case competition brought together the best business school teams in the world to mobilize knowledge and create solutions to advance supply chain capacity in global health systems.
To further strengthen knowledge of business processes in health systems, each team has access to a panel of internationally renowned leaders and experts in health system supply chain and logistics strategy. This first of a kind virtual business case competition offers student teams the opportunity to work with global leaders, as expert advisors, to support their learning and success in the competition.
This unique virtual competition enables emergent leaders from business schools around the world to compete and demonstrate their exceptional skill, knowledge, and innovative ideas to advance health sector supply chain innovation. The competition encourages cross-disciplinary teams from business and health sciences to collaborate to build leadership capacity in health sector supply chain.
Outstanding student teams from leading business schools around the world were recognized for their exceptional innovative thinking and practical approaches to scaling the United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) supply chain transformation initiative, Scan4Safety, across all 148 trusts.
