At Workshop/APD, an award-winning New York City-based multidisciplinary design and architecture firm, each project is uniquely defined by a sense of place and purpose and a desire to ultimately enhance the user’s experience through exceptional design. From sleek penthouses and seaside retreats to luxury residential developments and groundbreaking hotels and restaurants, the Workshop/APD aesthetic is timelessly modern but site specific, unbound by project type or a singular style. Led by Founding Principals Andrew Kotchen and Matt Berman and Principal Architect Thomas Zoli, a collaborative team of more than 80 architects, interior designers and product designers leverages its vast and highly varied experiences to solve complex design challenges, resulting in spaces that are at once exceptionally beautiful and accessible.

How can a space shape you? We believe in the power of good design to shape the human experience, from ground-up architecture to our tactile, sculptural bath fixtures. Through a collaborative practice we create luxurious interiors, exteriors and products that spark interaction, exploration, and connection. Our team dives deep for development projects, studying crash points and adjacencies to develop one-of-a-kind amenities and engaging common spaces that build community and drive meaningful interaction. We advance big ideas, committing to design that is ethical, poetic, and of its time. Each design considers the client’s unique needs and desires, the contextual landscape, and the project’s purpose.

We embrace technology and celebrate craft, bringing materiality and contrast to luxurious modern spaces. “Modern” underscores an innovative, forward thinking approach. “Craft” is an open-minded exploration of the ways that materials and connections can be elevated by transformation and continue to evolve over time. Finished, refined, textured, honed, engineered, joined and detailed: in revealing the hand of the maker we breathe life into the materials of our trade. Subtle variations created by man, machine, time or weather make each project and space unique. There is beauty in socalled “imperfections”, which imbue a decorative, tactile quality and invite investigation and touch, activating a relationship between a space and its inhabitants. This is what gives modern design a soul.

EXPERIENCE

Workshop/APD has years of storied success designing forward thinking interiors for high-end residential developments; from adaptive re-use to ground-up new buildings, Workshop/APD is in the business of creating experiences for the end-users of their properties. For us design is not about aesthetic; it’s about experience. We firmly believe that designing a successful mixed-use property is not about expensive material or finish choices; it is about crafting an experience for the residents & guests to feel an escape from the norm, one that is both comfortable and exciting. Our work is shaped by the locations in which each project is set, and our designs are grounded in context. No two Workshop/APD projects are the same, because no two neighborhoods or development sites are the same.

From the coastline of Martha’s Vineyard to the music center of Nashville, Workshop/APD has designed residential developments for the most challenging locations and code conditions. We have mastered the art of engaging local community boards and civic associations, bringing them on as partners as opposed to adversaries. Our experience has taught us to embrace the challenges of each project as the impetus for innovation & creativity throughout the design process. Having completed multiple residential developments, both as Architect of Record and as Interior Designer, we understand the level of coordination necessary to bring these jobs to the finish line. We have developed eye catching lobbies, best in class amenity spaces, and sophisticated residences & guestrooms at a variety of price points. Working within the confines of varied budget levels, we understand which design elements make lasting impressions and take pride in our ability to spend allocated dollars where they will have the most impact.
