FAMILIES There is fun for all the family at Dove Cottage this summer, with events and activities for all ages and interests. There are three regular events which take place throughout the season:

Welcome to our summer 2016 events programme, featuring a wide variety of activities for a broad range of interests, including talks, walks, readings and workshops. We hope that you will find it interesting and we look forward to seeing you at an event very soon.

In these fun and creative sessions we meet the people and animals who lived in Dove Cottage through stories and crafts. We have 30 minutes of storytelling followed by 30 minutes of craft activities where you can make something bright and colourful to take home. Suitable for children aged 6 months to 5 years.

EXHIBITIONS Wordsworth Country: Lakes, Mountains and Waterfalls In 2016, we shall mark 125 years since Dove Cottage opened to visitors. This takes us back to a time when the Lake District was known as Wordsworth Country, or Wordsworthshire, due to the large tourist interest in places associated with Wordsworth’s life and poetry. Our exhibition will focus on how the Lake District and Wordsworth became synonymous.

How does Wordsworth’s poetry help us to enjoy the lakes, mountains and waterfalls of the Lake District? How did places linked to his life, such as Dove Cottage and Grasmere churchyard, become places of pilgrimage?

Wordsworth himself wrote a guide book to the lakes – how has that shaped the way we see the area?

And how were Wordsworth’s writings and ideas used to protect this precious area against invasion by railways: arguments that led to the creation of the national parks (not just here, but in North America too).

There will also be a series of changing displays: manuscripts of Dorothy Wordsworth’s Lake District writing (found in her journals and letters) (March – May), the story of Wordsworth’s influence on how people viewed and enjoyed the landscape of the Pacific Northwest coast of Canada (May – August) and the history of early photographically illustrated anthologies of Wordsworth (September – October). Smaller displays will focus on Wordsworth’s climbing of Snowdon (July) and on Cumbrian dialect (July – August). We shall also be part of the C-Art programme in September. It will be an exciting year – please check our website for details.

In Rucksack of Rhymes we explore a short poem by Wordsworth, and a theme such as nature or wildlife, with a rucksack full of toys and games for children aged 6 months to 5 years to play with. We sing songs and rhymes and tell stories for 30 minutes then play for another 30 minutes.

Terrific Treks & Wild Walks During the school holidays there are also arts and crafts based sessions for children which explore aspects of Romantic poetry and teach them about life in Dove Cottage in the Wordsworths’ time. Please see the Diary section for details.

In these guided walks, we explore the area around Dove Cottage and visit places the Wordsworth family knew and wrote about. We talk, draw and write about what we can see on our walk in our journals, especially the plants and wildlife and the dramatic landscape of the Lake District. Ideal for families with children aged 12 and under who like to be active. Please dress sensibly in appropriate clothing and footwear.

Wordsworth Wednesdays at Brockhole In addition to offering family activities at Dove Cottage, our Education team are visiting Brockhole, the Lake District National Park Visitor Centre, on ten occasions this year. They will run three sessions on each of these days:

Dove Cottage Events An extra-special experience of Dove Cottage awaits you at these events, where you can get to know the house and garden better. Keen gardeners are sure to enjoy guided tours of the garden with our Head Gardener Sally, who has looked after the garden for many years.

Join us after hours for a snapshot of life with the Wordsworths for Museums at Night and help us celebrate the 125th anniversary of Dove Cottage opening to visitors as a literary museum.

Saturday Talks Have a Romantic encounter of your own at one of our Saturday talks, and get to know the wider circle of Romantic writers, in a series inspired by the portraits on loan from national museums displayed in our museum. There are six talks, one each month, and each is by an expert in their field. This series also offers a fresh perspective on the writers and their works with connected themes, such as mountaineering, Quakerism and weather.

Workshops Have you ever wanted to learn calligraphy, crewel work embroidery or watercolour painting? Or have a unique, hands-on experience with some of the treasures in our collection? Learn new skills and techniques in our series of full day workshops led by worldrenowned, knowledgeable tutors.

Walks

Poetry Events We are pleased to present several contemporary poetry readings this summer which focus on bringing you the best new voices of today in partnership with The Poetry Business and Pavilion Poets. We also look forward to a reading by one of our Friends, Arthur Kincaid, and workshops

by Lucy Crispin which show us how we can use poetry to help us through the difficult times in life.

In partnership with the Lake District National Park Authority, we are pleased to bring you a series of walks inspired by Wordsworth and his poems. There are three locations – Ullswater, Hawkshead and Grasmere – and ten walks between March and August. All are led by experienced and friendly LDNPA volunteers, with guidance and literary information from the Wordsworth Trust. There is no need to book and they are free to join, though boat fares and parking charges will apply.

Follow in his footsteps and see if you agree. Take the steamer from Glenridding to the legendary Aira Force waterfall and return along the lake shore. This walk is graded easy and is 3.7 miles (6km), which should take approximately 4 hours. You are advised to wear appropriate footwear and bring a packed lunch. Dogs are welcome.

Head Gardener Sally Hall, who has cared for the garden for eight years, will give an extra-special insight into the garden as it was then and is today.

Cumbria is both the birth place of Quakerism and the cradle of Romanticism. Discover the associations between the Romantic poets and Quakers in this talk by Arthur, a longtime Friend of the Wordsworth Trust.

Thomas Clarkson, family friend of the Wordsworths, worked closely with leading Quakers of the day on the slavery abolition campaign, but to what extent did other Romantic writers interact and share values with them? Arthur will also examine why, though strongly the difference to me... : drawn to Quakerism, none of the major Life, Loss and Literature writers joined the Society of Friends.

IV. the passion the sorrow and the strife: grieving (Part 1)

Ullswater Information Centre, Glenridding Free, boat fare and parking charges apply A walk organised by the Lake District National Park Authority It was while walking by Ullswater on 15 April 1802 that William and Dorothy Wordsworth first saw the daffodils which inspired his most famous poem.

Follow in their footsteps and see them for yourself, 204 years later. Take the steamer from Glenridding to the legendary Aira Force waterfall, visit the site of the golden daffodils and return along the lake shore. This walk is graded easy and is 3.7 miles (6km), which should take approximately 4 hours. You are advised to wear appropriate footwear and bring a packed lunch. Dogs are welcome.

How can poetry help us during the difficult times in life? What can it teach us about being human?

Wordsworth wrote out of his deep conviction that poetry could help us live. Through reading and discussing the work of Wordsworth and other poets – from the 15th Century to the present day – this series of informal workshops will explore loss, one of the central facts of human experience.

We will deepen our understanding of the poetry, of loss, and of how we respond to it. We will be fortified by each other and by delicious home-made cake.

This is the fourth session in this series, each session stands alone and you are welcome to join us today.

We can think of no better way to mark Museums at Night on Friday the 13th than to recreate that occasion with a reading of this terrifying gothic tale about supernatural forces and evil spirits in Dove Cottage by candlelight.

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to experience an evening in the life of the Wordsworths. ‘Christabel’ will be discussed in more detail, along with ‘Kubla Khan’ and ‘The Pains of Sleep’, on Saturday 14 May to celebrate the 200th anniversary of their publication.

A workshop with Phillipa Turnbull Crewel work is an ancient form of embroidery using wool to create a raised design on a linen background.

Join world-renowned textiles expert Phillipa Turnbull to learn the stitches and techniques needed to create a beautiful image of a running hare, chosen to reflect ‘The hare running races in her mirth’ in Wordsworth’s ‘Resolution and Independence’. All materials will be provided. Phillipa will also give a talk titled ‘A Needlework Tour of Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland’ at the end of the afternoon. Coffee will be served on arrival from 9.30am. Lunch is not included so please bring your own or visit Dove Cottage Tea Rooms.

William Wordsworth attended Hawkshead Grammar School from 1779 until 1787 and it was during these years that he first began composing poetry, taking inspiration from the countryside and wildlife around him.

Discover the village and surrounding area through his eyes in this easy 2.5 mile (4km) walk. The walk is expected to take approximately 1.5 hours; appropriate footwear is advised.

Christabel, Kubla Khan, The Pains of Sleep Saturday 14 May, 4.00 – 5.00pm Jerwood Centre, £5 A conversation with Simon Bainbridge On 25 May 1816, Coleridge published a pamphlet containing some of his most popular poems: ‘Christabel’, ‘Kubla Khan’ and ‘The Pains of Sleep’.

To mark the 200th anniversary, Professor Simon Bainbridge (Lancaster University) will talk with Curator Jeff Cowton about the composition, publication and significance of these poems. Simon was a tutor on the very successful online course ‘William Wordsworth: Poetry, People and Place’ and this afternoon will follow a similar conversational format. This event follows a special candlelit reading of ‘Christabel’ in Dove Cottage on Friday 13 May as part of Museums at Night.

A reading by Arthur Kincaid Professional actor, and long-time Friend of the Wordsworth Trust, Arthur Kincaid, is well known locally for his recent productions of The Tempest and Shelley’s Prometheus Unbound.

At this special event for the benefit of the Wordsworth Trust, he will share some of his favourite poems, including works by Shakespeare, Donne, Herbert, Blake, Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley and Browning.

Pavilion Poetry is a new poetry series from Liverpool University Press and seeks to publish the very best in contemporary poetry to challenge and delight. Join us to hear from three new collections of poetry released in 2015 by three exciting voices: Mona Arshi, Sarah Corbett and Eleanor Rees.

The Long View is the latest creative project by Rob and Harriet Fraser, curators of the Land Keepers exhibition in 2014. It combines nature, exploration, science and art to celebrate the value and beauty of trees, and the importance of the natural environment and our connection with it. This is the first in a series of walks to seven spectacular trees in Cumbria led by Rob and Harriet, as part of the project with insights into trees, ecology and landscape heritage. It is a moderate, 4-hour walk with an ascent of Helm Crag (400m) above Grasmere.

A conversation with David Higgins Extreme weather is not a modern phenomenon; 200 years ago the world was suffering a climate so cold and wet that it became known as ‘the year without a summer’. Dr David Higgins (University of Leeds), in conversation with Curator Jeff Cowton, will explain more about this environmental catastrophe and the important impact it had on Romantic literature, in particular the fascinating story of how the unseasonable weather ultimately led to the composition of Frankenstein.

The Wordsworths and Coleridge were enthusiastic and pioneering climbers who wrote some of the earliest and most memorable mountaineering literature, including William’s account of rock-climbing in The Prelude, Dorothy’s depiction of her ascent of Scafell Pike, and Samuel’s narrative of his near fatal descent of Broad Stand on Scafell. Professor Simon Bainbridge (Lancaster University) and Wordsworth Trust Curator Jeff Cowton will read from and discuss these and other great writings. We will also consider and discuss how the Romantics’ experience of the Lake District mountains compares with our own.

A reading from the 2016 winners Now in its 30th year, The Poetry Business Book & Pamphlet Competition is a significant event in the literary calendar and has helped to launch the careers of poets including Mike Barlow, Mimi Khalvati, Michael Laskey, Allison McVety, Kim Moore, Daljit Nagra, Jane Routh and David Tait.

Wednesday 27 July, 6.00 – 7.00pm Jerwood Centre, free A talk by Adam Menuge On this day in 1891, Dove Cottage opened its doors to its first visitors as a literary museum. Mrs Dixon, the first guide, was not overwhelmed by the rush: one was from Chicago, two from Glasgow, and another from Bradford.

Since then, we have had at least one day with over 700 visitors, and now receive about 50,000 people a year.

The house feels unchanged since Wordsworth’s time; we can still imagine Wordsworth and his family living with its wooden panels, stone floors and garden: ‘the loveliest spot that man hath ever found’. Join us for this very special day, and hear Dr Adam Menuge, Course Director of MSt in Building History at the University of Cambridge, as he explores the origins and evolution of the house over the last 300 or more years.

William and Dorothy Wordsworth considered their garden as their ‘little domestic slip of mountain’, where they grew their own vegetables and nurtured an orchard of fruit trees.

The 2016 Annual Thelwall Lecture by Patty O’Boyle Romantic era society was just as fascinated with celebrity and scandal as we are today, and John Thelwall was no stranger to either as one of the leading political activists of the time.

In this lecture Dr Patty O’Boyle will discuss Patrick Boyle’s Register and Court Guide and its importance as the first real directory of London residents; Thelwall’s Institute, his ownership of The Champion and his eventual bankruptcy; and Thelwall’s connection with the O’Callaghans, including the scandal of Carlos O’Callaghan’s imprisonment for defending the honour of the Boyle ladies.

Jerwood Centre, £5 As language changes over time, it is easy to forget that people living in the Lake District in the past spoke and wrote very differently to how we do now. In celebration of the summer exhibition by the Cumbrian Dialect Society, spend an afternoon discovering how our Cumbrian predecessors expressed themselves. Keith Coates (Acting Chairman) and Jean ScottSmith (Secretary) will read a selection of verse and prose written in local dialect from the last two hundred years. John Hartley will talk about the provincial Cumbrian poets of the time, such as John Stagg, Robert Anderson and Miss Blamire. How many of their words and pronunciations do we still use today?

Silhouette portraits were a very popular and affordable way to capture a person’s profile in the Wordsworths’ time: you can see one of Dorothy Wordsworth in Dove Cottage. In this workshop, cut and create your own silhouettes in different shapes and sizes using a range of drawing and crafting techniques. Also see if you can guess who our secret silhouettes are of. Activities for children age 3+.

Letters and the Lamp: Sir Humphry Davy Saturday 24 September, 2.00 – 4.00pm Jerwood Centre, £5 A talk by Sharon Ruston Did you know that Sir Humphry Davy, famed chemist and inventor of the miner’s safety lamp, was a friend of Coleridge, or that he proof read the 1800 edition of the Lyrical Ballads at Wordsworth’s invitation?

In this talk, Professor Sharon Ruston (Lancaster University) will introduce us to Davy’s lesserknown literary side and focus on his correspondence, the majority of which will be published for the very first time in The Collected Letters of Sir Humphry Davy by Oxford University Press in 2018.

After the talk there will be tea and coffee, and an informal workshop to discuss some of the issues raised in Davy’s letters. We will also be asking participants about the importance of letters in the past and today.

Dr Manny Ling is a world-renowned calligrapher and was one of the featured artists in Wordsworth and Basho: Walking Poets exhibition in 2014. Join him for this introduction to the basics of writing with the Italic Script; learn to use the broad edged pen, and study and practise the proportion and shapes of each letter. All materials except paper will be provided; please bring A3 cartridge paper with you or purchase at the workshop. No previous experience is necessary, people of all levels and previous participants are welcome.
