UNIVERSITY SHORT COURSES

Experience the magic of the archive and get up-close with the past with hands-on experiential courses at Wordsworth Grasmere

What are short courses?

Experience the magic of the archive and get up-close with the past with hands-on experiential courses at Wordsworth Grasmere. Our team of experts will give your students the tools to interpret the past in new and imaginative ways – and leave them with skills that will be invaluable beyond their time at university.

Poetry, people and place will come to life through detailed investigation of manuscripts, creative workshops, walks and more. William and Dorothy Wordsworth’s lives and writing are at the heart of our courses, but we also explore diverse subject matter such as their contemporaries in the Romantic era, the Georgian period and key issues of the time, as well as why these topics are still relevant today.

One-day or multiple-day, online or in-person, there is something to suit every group, budget, and schedule. Our courses can be adapted to suit students of any academic discipline, whether they are studying literature, history, science, art and more.

Standard courses

For groups seeking the essential experience, especially those working within a set budget. Choose from a selection of course elements to design the perfect experience for your students. Options include visits to Dove Cottage and the Museum, curator-led workshops, guided walks, tours, activities and talks.

Bespoke courses

For groups that would like to explore a specialist topic in depth, create a course around a specific theme or idea, or build practical career skills. We can design workshops, talks, practical skills sessions and more. Students might create a community outreach project, create an online exhibition, write exhibition labels or even work on designing a symposium.

Online courses

For groups who are unable to visit in person. Fully flexible, our team can work with your timetable to fit sessions into your class schedule. Choose from virtual tours, talks and workshops. Our curator-led workshops use two cameras so that curators can work with your class while the second camera focuses on their hands, showing the books and manuscripts they are handling in fine detail.

Testimonials

‘I have a whole new appreciation for Wordsworth, poetry in general, and a whole new mindset that I would have never gained if it wasn’t for the people I met here and the experiences that I’ve had.’

‘… you inspired us all that day, not only in how we think about Wordsworth and literary collections, but particularly in how this can inform our own work.’

‘…holding an original manuscript from hundreds of years ago in your hands and getting to read the same lines you studied is just an incredible feeling.’

‘Being in the Lake District where Wordsworth wrote brought his words to life, and it’s something I will remember in years to come. Dove Cottage is a treasure in the world of literature, and I feel so lucky to have had this experience.’

About Wordsworth Grasmere

In 1799 William Wordsworth arrived in Grasmere aged 29, largely unknown and writing innovative poetry that came as a shocking contrast to the fashionable verses of the time. Whilst living at Dove Cottage with his family, Wordsworth wrote many of his greatest poems and his sister Dorothy kept her famous Grasmere journal. Wordsworth Grasmere tells the story of this remarkable time.

Step into another century as you experience the sights, sounds and smells of Dove Cottage. Stroll through the Garden-Orchard, which has been restored to resemble the ‘domestic slip of mountain’ that the Wordsworths lovingly created. Discover Wordsworth’s radical and creative life in the Museum. Get up-close with the past in the Jerwood Centre, the state-of-the-art library and archive where we care for a collection of over 68,000 items relating to the Romantic era.
