Welcome to Woopi News...

Spring has Sprung! Spring has sprung, and it’s our birthday! Woopi News has been publishing for five years now. We have the best time putting it together every month. Brad and I were reminiscing on how when we first started, the plan was to run a four-page leaflet through the photocopier and how each day, as I was collating local news stories to share, it kept growing and growing. Can I have this in colour, Brad? Yes.

Can I take this to eight pages, Brad? Yes

Can I take this to 12 pages, Brad?

Yes

Now we have this beautiful full-colour gloss professional-looking reading magazine, which is peaking at 72 pages. We love walking the streets of Woopi and having locals and visitors tell us how much they enjoy Woopi News.

We love how our advertisers tell us how successful their advertising is and thank us for supporting their businesses.

We love meeting new people and catching up with the old. They say if you love your job, you never have to work a day in your life. That’s how we feel. So, thank you, everyone, for helping make this good thing happen. This edition is a bumper one with information about the mayoral and councillor candidates in the upcoming election.

One exciting bit of news is that I have thrown my hat in the ring this election. I am running for councillor as a member on Tegan Swan’s ticket. I genuinely think Tegan is the best, most experienced and fairest candidate to be Mayor. She cares about the entire LGA, but being a local of the Northern

Beaches, she has a special place in her heart for Woolgoolga and our surrounding areas.

In addition to this election coverage, we are also publishing an E-zine (digital magazine) with up-to-date information on the election and the candidates, how to vote, where to vote etc.

This will be launched in early September via our website and over our socials. So if you’re a study-theform kind of voter or a last-minute decision voter, the details will be at your fingertips from your phone, tablet or computer.

Please make your votes count. It’s essential for all our futures.

Curryfest is turning 18

Don’t miss Woolgoolga’s signature festival on September 28.

Our Northern Beaches Chamber of Commerce, with the assistance of local Event Management firm, Another Tasty Event, are busy organising funding, equipment, insurance, food stalls, performers, council approvals and volunteers to run our town’s special day.

“Curryfest is more than a celebration of Woolgoolga’s unique cultural diversity, it is a fundraiser for various local volunteer groups who help on the day and it generates enormous economic spin off by bringing visitors to town”, Curryfest Committee chair Pam Fayle said, “Visitors from outside the Coffs Coast stay on average more than three days in our area spending money at local shops and businesses”.

So what’s on the menu this year?

According to event manager Carl Mower, this year will feature fabulous Coffs Coast chefs at the cooking zone and there will be a number of new Bhangra dance groups performing as part of a more extensive main stage dance competition.

“There will be Dholi drummers and last year’s successful Indian Bazaar will be back again along with a new addition of some laughing yoga sessions for visitors to join in with, as well as the turban tying and dance workshops,” said Carl

Many would know that events are expensive to run and many have had

to close down recently, but Curryfest is determined to ensure family friendliness by keeping entry costs for school-aged children and younger free of charge.

So support our local businesses and volunteer groups, invite friends and relatives to visit Woopi and pop along to celebrate this year’s Curryfest. In its 18th year Curryfest has well and truly come of age!

Curryfest Bazaar.

One of the favourite zones of Curryfest is the Curryfest Bazaar!

This exciting zone brings a touch of India’s rich culture and style to the festival. Nestled among the festivities, the Curryfest Bazaar offers a delightful shopping experience with an array

of vendors showcasing a splendid collection of clothing, including shawls, scarves, dupattas, and shoes.

The intricate details of Indian craftsmanship will be on full display, with exquisite jewellery that captures the essence of Indian traditions.

For those seeking a temporary artistic flair, henna tattoo artists will adorn hands with beautiful designs. The bazaar also features a curated selection of goods ranging from blankets to linen clothing, all infused with a distinct Indian flair.

Enjoy the colours, patterns, and textures of Curryfest Bazaar, a treasure trove that adds a unique and enchanting dimension to every year’s festivities.

R U OK? Day

Woolgoolga Gears Up for R U OK? Day

On Thursday, September 12, Woolgoolga will once again unite in a powerful display of community spirit and mental health awareness for R U OK? Day. The day’s events are set to encourage connections, offer support, and remind everyone of the importance of checking in on each otherany day of the year.

This year’s theme, ‘You can ask R U OK? any day,’ emphasises that while R U OK? Day is a special time to spotlight mental health, the message is relevant every single day. We all have the power to make a difference in someone’s life by simply starting a conversation, whether it’s today, tomorrow, or any day.

The day will kick off with our annual visual tribute at dawn.

At 6.30am residents and visitors are invited to gather on Woolgoolga Beach to form a massive human ‘R U OK?’ on the sand. This striking formation, set against the backdrop of the rising sun, will be a poignant reminder of the importance of starting conversations that could change a life.

Following this, the community can participate in an “Out of the Shadows” walk along the beach. This symbolic walk,

embracing the early morning light, represents bringing conversations about mental health into the open and supporting those who might be struggling in silence.

As the sun climbs higher, participants can enjoy a wellearned coffee at The Hub Cafe, nestled under the surf club. Here, the warmth of community will continue to flow, with opportunities to connect with fellow walkers and share stories over a comforting cup of coffee.

Throughout the day, the corner of Beach and Nightingale Streets will feature special “conversation chairs.” These chairs, placed strategically to encourage passers-by to sit and chat, serve as a dedicated space where anyone can find a listening ear. Whether you need to talk or simply want to connect, these chairs offer a welcoming spot to pause and engage. This will be from 10am till 2pm.

In a show of support for mental health, businesses across Woolgoolga are encouraged to dress in yellow for the day. This simple but powerful gesture will transform the town into a sea of sunshine, reinforcing the message that we all play a part in supporting one another. Wally will be out and about with his trusty camera.

R U OK? Day in Woolgoolga promises to be a day filled with compassion, connection, and community spirit. So, put on something yellow, join the morning’s activities, and remember that asking “Are you okay?” isn’t just for todayit’s a question we can ask any day of the year.

Discover Darlington Beach Holiday Resort

A Legacy of Joy, Now Entering a New Era of Events Excellence

For locals and seasoned travellers alike, ‘Darlo’ is more than just a holiday destination - it’s where memories are made, friendships forged, and families return, year after year. Since its founding by John Darlington in 1981, the resort has evolved through the years, becoming a proud member of the NRMA Parks and Resorts family for nearly two decades. Nestled between the tranquil bushland and stunning beaches of Arrawarra, Darlington Beach Holiday Resort is a hidden gem. It surprises visitors with a wide range of topnotch facilities: an expansive golf course, a bowling green, a range of accommodations, and a fully licensed restaurant. Recently awarded NRMA’s ‘Park with the Highest Guest Satisfaction’ among 54 properties, the resort stands out for its dedication to crafting unforgettable guest experiences.

A fresh chapter begins for Darlington Beach Holiday Resort with new leadership at the helm. After eight remarkable years, beloved managers, Glen and Rebecca Young have set off on a new adventure, leaving behind a legacy of excellence. Their leadership helped secure the resort’s latest accolades, a testament to their dedication and vision.

In May, Nick Warner stepped into the role of General Manager, bringing with him over 15 years of international hospitality experience. Having successfully managed major events, from international boat shows to large-scale sporting functions, Nick’s expertise has earned him notable industry recognition, including the Rising Star Award from the Queensland and Australian Hotels Association. Nick is especially eager to build stronger ties with the local community and looks forward to bringing exciting new business opportunities to Darlington Beach.

Joining Nick is the resort’s new Assistant Manager, Debbie McCartney. With an impressive background as both a chef and small business owner, Debbie has an eye for detail and

a passion for hospitality. Having relocated from the awardwinning NRMA Murramarang Beachfront Holiday Resort, she is excited to bring her experience to northern NSW. The leadership team is further strengthened by the talents of Front Office Manager (Pam Buckler), Housekeeping Manager (Tina Bullock), Resident Liaison Officer (Sue Stabback), and Grounds and Maintenance Manager (Mark Sinclair).

This dynamic new team has big plans for the future. The resort is set to rejuvenate its conference centre, welcoming back community events, weddings, corporate functions, and even kids’ birthday parties. Leading these efforts is Sharon Galway, who, after excelling as the Activities Manager, has transitioned into her new role as Guest Experience and Events Manager. The team also welcomes Head Chef Jye Regan, who is set to elevate the resort’s culinary offerings with menus that showcase seasonal, locally sourced ingredients.

Sharon, a familiar face in the local community, has spent the last two years enriching guest experiences and managing operations for visitors of all ages. With her background in education, sales, and marketing, Sharon is known for her creativity and commitment to delivering unforgettable events. Meanwhile, Chef Jye, who boasts over a decade of experience across the Coffs Coast and beyond, is passionate about creating delicious, memorable meals.

As Darlington Beach Holiday Resort embarks on this exciting new journey, they warmly invite you to connect with their outstanding team. Whether it’s a corporate event, a wedding, or a family celebration, the team is ready to make your next gathering one to remember.

Buskers Festival 2024 Set To Hit Coffs

It’s on again, the first week of the October school holidays, as the Coffs Harbour International Buskers and Comedy Festival 2024 celebrates its twenty-fourth year. Keeping the event running for twenty-plus years has been a tough ride. While many other fancied events are having a year off or stopping altogether, this home-grown

event has run every year since its inception in 2001 (except for the Covid year), a feat the organisers are very proud of.

“Yep, it’s a tough gig, but we love this little event, and the town really comes alive when the buskers hit the streets, pubs and outdoor spaces in Coffs once a year”, said organiser John Logan this week.

This year, the program will kick off with the ever-popular

Kids Day on October 3 and continue until Sunday October 6, taking in shows in the City Centre, Moonee Beach, Coffs Golf Club and the Harbourside Markets. Northern Beaches residents can enjoy two shows at the Moonee Beach Hotel on Saturday, October 5.

Saving Lives, One AED at a Time

Defib Hero Program Launches in Coffs Harbour:

A new initiative aimed at dramatically increasing the chances of surviving a cardiac emergency is gaining momentum across the Coffs Coast.

The program, spearheaded by a local business group is on a mission to ensure that every resident in the region is within three minutes of a publicly accessible defibrillator.

So far, the group, enthusiastically encouraged by Brad Daymond and John Rafferty, has successfully purchased ten defibrillators, with an additional five on order, all of which

will be placed in locations that are accessible 24/7. These life-saving devices, also known as Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), are crucial in the event of a cardiac arrest, where time is of the essence.

A key component of this initiative is the ‘Defib Hero’ app, created by renowned Australian Ironman champion Guy Leech.

The app serves as a central hub for locating AEDs in real-time during emergencies, providing step-by-step instructions on their use, and offering direct contact with emergency services. The app is designed to bridge the critical time gap between the onset of a cardiac event and the arrival of professional medical responders.

Mon-Fri 8:30 to 5:30 Sat 9:00 to 1:00

Currently, 35 defibrillators have been registered on the app, but the goal is to increase this number to over 100. The success of this project could lead to a significant increase in survival rates from cardiac arrests within the community.

Woopi News lists 34 AEDs in the Northern Beaches area and publishes this information on the inside back page every month.

(Thank you to Woolgoolga Real Estate and Lisa Taranto Perry for making this possible.)

If these were also registered on the Defib Hero app, it would represent a major step forward in ensuring that every resident has quick access to this life-saving technology.

When Brad and John first came up with the concept of delivering Defib Hero to the Coffs LGA , they requested six local companies to be ‘Presenting

Partners’ and to donate $5k each as seed funding.

Callan Bailey from The Bailey Centre, was first on board, quickly followed by The Bayrange Group, Gowings Group, C3 Group, Gosling Group and Bachrach Naumburger Group, AJ Civil and Bonville Golf Resort.

The men are passionate about the potential impact of this program. Having witnessed first-hand the lifesaving power of a defibrillator, they are committed to ensuring that the Coffs Harbour region becomes a safer place for everyone.

The program also plans to identify any gaps in AED coverage within the community over the next months, with funding from local businesses to ensure that any shortfalls are addressed.

“Seattle is known as the safest to suffer a heart incident with a survival

rate of approximately 70%,” said Brad Daymond. “Here in Australia, our survival rate is under 10%. We are working hard to close the gap –saving our community, one life at a time.”

The Defib Hero app not only provides real-time AED locations but also offers free CPR training, empowering more community members to act quickly and confidently in an emergency. Community members are urged to download the Defib Hero app and to register any AEDs they know of in workplaces or other locations. Sharing this information with friends, family, and colleagues could make all the difference in saving a life.

Brad and John are keen to install more AEDs so if you have a suggestion for the perfect spot please send it to community@woopinews.com.au and we will pass it on for you.

For those interested in learning more about the program please go to www. defibhero.com.au

To install the app please go to your phone’s app store and search defib hero.

Local SES Unit Stays Active Year-Round

The Corindi-Woolgoolga unit of the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is always hard at work, regardless of the weather. While the recent mild weather might suggest a lull in activities, the dedicated volunteers have been busy with training, ensuring they are fully prepared to assist the community during storms, floods, and tsunamis.

The unit’s training regimen is robust, covering a wide range of skills from laying sandbags and water diversion techniques to advanced training such as working from heights, flood rescue operations, and chainsaw operation.

Members gather weekly to sharpen their expertise and also participate in formal courses to gain nationally recognized qualifications and specialized SES certifications.

Not only does the unit stand ready to respond to emergencies, but they also actively engage with the community, providing valuable education on how to prepare homes and properties for severe weather events. The SES volunteers are pleased to see that many residents have taken proactive steps to prepare for adverse weather conditions, resulting in minimal requests for assistance during recent intense rains.

In addition to acknowledging the community’s preparedness, the Corindi-Woolgoolga SES Unit expresses gratitude to several local businesses and organizations for their support. Anaconda’s donation of much-needed marquees will ensure ongoing protection for emergency service personnel and affected members of the public at

various events and operational activities. Coffs Garden World, Sapphire Beach, also received appreciation for donating a toy replica Stihl chainsaw, providing an opportunity to educate children and adults about SES work and safety measures. The Woolgoolga Men’s Shed was recognised for their generous contribution of a spinning wheel, adding a fun element to community events and engaging both adults and children.

The unit also extends an invitation to individuals interested in volunteering with the SES, emphasizing the chance to assist the local community and access unique training opportunities. Those interested can join the CorindiWoolgoolga Unit on Tuesday nights or contact them for more information. For emergency aid during floods, storms, or tsunamis, residents are encouraged to call the NSW SES at 132 500 or 000 in life-threatening emergencies.

To engage the community further, the unit has included some fun and helpful SES-related questions with answers promised in our next issue.

⚠ What safety gear should you wear when using a chainsaw?

⚠ What is the safe distance between you and fallen powerlines?

⚠ What is the name of the SES Mascot?

⚠ What training is provided to SES volunteers?

Answers will be in our next article.

Vale Ken Gall

Ken was extremely generous, talented, and an exceptional human being.

On hearing the Woolgoolga District Orchid Society was hosting the 23rd AOC International Orchid Conference and Show in October 2025, Ken jumped at the chance of creating a beautiful timber platter for the Society to raffle.

Although Ken was far from in the best of health, his generosity knew no bounds, and he set about artfully creating a magical platter in Tasmanian Myrtle Beech. This timber’s stunning colour variation ranges from pink to reddish brown.

Having commenced his woodworking journey to counterbalance the mental demands of his work in the critical health care industry, Ken was an absolute genius when it came to creating exquisite timber pieces.

Importantly, he became a talented master craftsman which not only provided him with an outlet of joy but proved a means to creatively express himself.

The Woolgoolga District Orchid Society would like to express their sincere thanks to Ken through his devoted and loving wife Kate, for his outstanding generosity. Ken will also be sadly missed throughout the Plantations community.

Thanks must also go to Tracy Cooper, Community Manager, Ingenia Lifestyle ‘Plantations’, for allowing the Orchid Society to promote their raffle to the Plantations residents, including all the generous residents who helped raise just over $1,000 towards the ‘big event’

in 2025.

The raffle, held in the Bunnings foyer was drawn by Ken’s wife Kate, on Saturday, August 17 when the lucky recipient of this magnificent platter and the $50 Bunnings Gift Voucher generously donated by Bunnings, was Maureen Flanagan of Plantations.

The second prize of Ken Gall’s Lazy Norman and Orchid was won by Tina Adams, also of Plantations and the third prizewinner of the beautiful Cornish kilt design crocheted Throw created by Carol Brown, again of Plantations and a member of the Orchid Society, plus an Orchid, was a won by a Boambee gentleman named Scott.

In light of their outstanding achievements, Honour BJJ has unveiled a High-Performance Training Program. This program is designed to provide young aspiring athletes with over 15 hours of weekly dedicated BJJ training, aiming to prepare them to compete at the highest levels nationally and internationally. Discover Glenreagh Community Markets

The Glenreagh Community Markets are held at the Glenreagh School of Arts Hall from 8am to 12:30pm the first Saturday of each month.

Featuring a wide variety of stalls both indoors and outdoors, the markets offer something for everyone. Visitors can explore an array of items, including coins and collectables, bric-a-brac, plants, books, jewellery, records, and a selection of handmade and homemade goods.

Food lovers are in for a treat, with popular options like egg and bacon

rolls, freshly baked scones, and a special guest this month, The Salty Cow, known for its mouthwatering cheeses, pickles, and crispbreads.

Just across the road, outside The Golden Dog Hotel, a ‘pop-up’ butcher returns by popular demand after receiving rave reviews last month. Nearby, the Glenreagh Bakery offers a range of unique sweet treats to take home. Visitors can also stop by the Glenreagh General Store for their weekend grocery needs, and then relax at The Golden Dog Hotel with a refreshing drink.

The Glenreagh Memorial Museum located in the historic School of Arts building dating back to 1915, is open on market day.

As the oldest village in the Orara Valley, Glenreagh has preserved much of its early charm from its days as a gold mining and timber hub. The museum’s collection provides a fascinating glimpse into life in the valley during those bustling times, showcasing the gold rush, the early timber industry, education, and social events. Many visitors find their walk through the museum a nostalgic journey through the past.

Student Anxiety

Addressing the Rising Tide of Student Anxiety: A Call for Collaborative Action

In recent years, the mental health landscape within our schools has undergone a profound shift. Increasingly, students are grappling with anxiety at unprecedented levels, a phenomenon that has left educators and parents deeply concerned. Schools and families need to work collaboratively to foster a safe and calming environment for our students.

The surge in student anxiety can be attributed to several factors. First and foremost is the relentless pressure students experience in an environment where they feel constant stress to perform. Social media has also had a profound impact on young people’s mental health. While it offers connectivity and a platform for self-expression, it also exposes students to cyberbullying, unrealistic standards of beauty and success, and constant comparison with peers. The digital age has eroded the boundaries between public and private life, leaving students vulnerable to maintaining a curated online persona.

Furthermore, the global climate of uncertainty, exacerbated by events such as the Covid-19 pandemic, economic

Recognising these challenges, schools are stepping up to create environments that prioritise mental wellbeing. Many schools have implemented comprehensive wellbeing programs, offering counselling services, mindfulness sessions, and stress management workshops. Educators are being trained to recognise signs of anxiety and provide support within the classroom. Creating a culture of openness, where students feel safe to express their struggles without fear of judgment, is a pivotal step.

Families play a crucial role in this support ecosystem. Open communication between parents and children can help demystify the pressures students face. Parents are encouraged to create a home environment where academic success is balanced with the development of emotional intelligence and resilience. Engaging in regular conversations about mental health and normalising anxiety can make a significant difference.

By fostering a culture of support, understanding, and proactive intervention, we can help our students navigate these challenging times with resilience and hope. The future wellbeing of our youth depends on our actions today.

Woolgoolga Lights Up In Red

For Australian Red Cross 110 year Celebrations Woolgoolga Red Cross members and friends celebrated in style as Woolgoolga was lit up in red at the Guru Nanak Temple and the Wiigulga Sports Complex.

Australian Red Cross began in 1914 as a direct response to the start of World War 1.

As our soldiers were off to Europe to fight for our freedoms thousands of volunteers united across the country to provide support in many ways, from provision of food, clothing and even bandages. On 13 August Australian Red Cross celebrated 110 years of humanitarian service.

The response of the organisation to helping others has evolved over the years. It now encompasses assistance during tsunamis and floods and bush fires, to helping older people who are lonely, to cheering frightened young children, to refugees, aid and advice to Indigenous communities. It helps trace families separated by war, provides support for the Laws of War, aid to people displaced in wars and terrorist attacks – and in countless other ways.

More than 80 people gathered for the birthday party, wearing splashes of red, including representatives of many of the other organisations in Woolgoolga. Celebrations began with a heartfelt rendition of the Australian National Anthem. Tables were decorated in red and white with beautiful flowers and anniversary bookmarks for everyone. Proceedings included a talk from Trish Mill about the history of Australian Red Cross, cutting of the birthday cake by inaugural Branch members David Edwards and Robyn Rooth, a fabulous afternoon tea provided by the hard-working volunteers, and an encouraging address from Mayor Cr Paul Amos.

Four members sang an original ‘Red Cross Song’ to the tune of ‘I Am Australian’, by Bruce Woodley. A small part of that song is as follows, with thanks to local branch President Kerry Chaffey:

Or service to humanity is most of what we do

We’re Impartial and we’re Neutral

And Independent too

Our Universal volunteers

Live lives like this each day

To show that Red Cross in the world

Can help to show the way.

We are many, but we are one

And from all the towns around we come

We share a dream, and sing with one voice

I am, you are Red Cross Australian.

Thank you Woolgoolga for all your generosity and support for the Red Cross movement.

The Jetty Foreshores Debate

Let’s Have a Say in Our Future …

At the upcoming Local Government elections to be held on Saturday September 14 a Poll is being held asking voters to have a say on the very important issue of the future of the community’s much-loved Coffs Harbour Jetty Foreshores. All eligible voters will be asked to answer yes or no to the following question:

‘The Coffs Harbour Jetty Foreshore will be redeveloped. Do you agree that some of the foreshore land should be used for multi-level private residential development?’

The NSW State Government’s proposed plan is to rezone and sell 4.2 hectares of public land to allow Government assisted developers to build multi-level buildings with up to 250 private residential dwellings and 200 short stay units.

Coffs Harbour Council is strongly opposed to the State Government’s plan and wants to see the land retained in public ownership to be used for the future enjoyment of all.

Council’s published concept plan for this land if it were retained in public ownership, suggests increased parklands along with some development to provide more recreation, dining, cultural and tourism experiences for the whole community.

Over some past 40 years, residential proposals for the Jetty precinct by previous State Governments have met

with community and Council opposition. The current Jetty Foreshores Plan of Management states that the Department of Lands has intentions to acquire the surplus railway land to provide additional parklands, and not for the purpose of residential development east of the railway line. The State Government has ignored this plan and thus ignored the voices of the people.

Self-funded community group, ‘Foreshore For All’, is strongly opposed to the proposed State Government plan saying that this area can be revitalised without masses of multi-level private residential buildings that will overshadow the existing open space and further impede parking and traffic flow.

Coffs Harbour is so lucky to have a beautiful space like the Jetty which can be enjoyed by the whole community, from all demographics, free of charge; 450 private residential units will destroy the community spirit. Parking will be limited and ‘valuable’ which will undoubtedly lead to timed and/or paid parking. Byron charges $4 per hour. Do we want the chaos that is Byron?

Foreshores For All urges voters to acquaint themselves with the policies of the candidates before voting and not be dictated to by Macquarie Street, big business and selfinterest developers but have your say in what’s best for our land – our future.

Prepared by Foreshore For All

The Jetty Foreshores Debate

Let’s Have a Say in Our Future …

Adopting the foreshore plan will be a key issue in this election, but without it, Coffs is destined to stagnate.

The jetty precinct should serve the entire Coffs LGA and visitors, not just protect a view for a few. This area has the potential to be a vibrant community hub, offering locals and tourists alike a place to gather, enjoy recreational activities, and support local businesses.

Coffs Harbour desperately needs new hotels—our last one was built in 1990. Even if we started today, a new hotel is unlikely within five years. Without upgraded tourist accommodation, Qantas will continue to dictate terms. When Western Sydney Airport opens, most of our flights will likely be routed there; Coffs has become a business airport with fares out of reach for most residents and tourists. We already have some of the highest regional airfares in the country, while nearby Ballina and Port Macquarie offer much cheaper flights to Sydney.

We’re losing events because we lack the beds to host major sporting or music events. Port Macquarie and Ballina, with their vibrant town centres, new hotels, and thriving tourism sectors, show what’s possible. Their riverside areas are beautifully landscaped with green spaces, lovely walks, and accommodations. This growth creates local jobs beyond just hospitality.

Tourism numbers in neighbouring towns are up about

20%, while we’re down about 5%. Look at Port Macquarie, Ballina, and Byron Bay; their waterfronts are enjoyed by thousands of tourists and locals. Even Townsville and Cairns demonstrate what’s achievable. Last Father’s Day in Townsville, we saw hundreds of families enjoying the BBQs, children’s water parks, walkways, and cycle paths—despite not being able to swim in the ocean.

The area we’re discussing is west of Jordan Esplanade, not on the foreshore—it’s disused dirt and weeds that has sat idle for 30 years. Imagine this space transformed into a thriving area with shops, cafés, and community spaces, reflecting the vibrancy we see in other coastal towns.

The big issue: we need state government funding for infrastructure to support new hotels and the entire Jetty area. The sewers are nearing capacity, and the pit outside the marina toilets has frequent issues. Power at the jetty is insufficient, with the marina precinct suffering blackouts, especially during the Christmas holidays. This impacts businesses like the yacht club, Fisherman’s Coop, and Latitude 30.

Without state funds, we’ll remain the poor relation among North Coast towns. Meanwhile, the local council is hoarding money for land acquisition, neglecting our services and city upkeep. Coffs was voted the most liveable city in the world in 2002—we’ve fallen far since then.

Conakry Connection

What Is Conakry Connection?

Refugees arriving in Australia are greeted with new opportunities but remain acutely aware of the family and friends they left behind, still facing significant hardships.

Twenty years ago, Anthony Nebo and his family arrived in Coffs Harbour as refugees from The Republic of Guinea in West Africa. Before

leaving, Anthony promised the teachers at a school in Conakry, Guinean capital, that as soon as he found employment, he would support the education of children whose parents had survived the Liberian Civil War and were refugees in Guinea.

Thanks to the unwavering support of a dedicated group on the North Coast, this school, The Believers

Academy, has not just survived but flourished. Today, 14 teachers educate around 120 students, from kindergarten through year 12, covering core subjects including English and French and offering additional choices for Years 11 and 12. The school’s motto, ‘Discipline, Hard Work & Excellence,’ is not just a phrase but a living embodiment of its mission. Anthony ensures the transparency of the process

by sending funds raised in Australia directly to the school’s Principal, Joseph. Joseph then ensures each staff member receives a monthly stipend of $210 AUD. No intermediaries are involved, ensuring that every dollar goes to support the school.

As the new school year approaches in September, they urgently need your support to keep the doors of Believers Academy open. They urgently need

assistance with the AUD

$9,000 rent, due every six months. Your sponsorship can make a significant difference.

For over 12 years, Reuben and Margaret Fox, along with friends from Coffs Harbour Baptist Church, have supported Believers Academy in Conakry,

Guinea. However, more sponsors are needed. Donations can be made to:

L et’s End Attacks by Dogs

It will take a concerted community effort to reduce the incredible number of dog attacks. Everyone who owns a dog needs to do the right thing. Heed the rules – “Dogs should be on a lead unless otherwise signposted”. This applies to everyone!

Go up to dog owners who are not doing the right thing and speak to them about it.

Learn about dog body language – this is how you can ‘read’ a dog.

If your dog shows behaviour such as aggression, fear, exacerbated dominance, rounding up other dogs or any other behaviour that makes you feel on edge ... take your dog to a reputable behaviourist.

If you have been ordered by council to have your dog on lead and muzzled –do so.

If you witness an attack – contact the council rangers.

neighbourhood.

Ensure you take a new pup to pup school for socialisation skills. If your new dog is older - take it to classes or some form of training.

If your dog has issues with other dogs, buy a yellow vest such as the one in the photo to alert others. Leads and harnesses with alerts on them are too hard to see.

In general, the dogs that are most likely to attack are those that:

Have never been socialised correctly

Are aggressive or genetically predisposed to aggression

Have a mental impairment

Have experienced trauma Are fearful or dominant

Run in a pack

Have a strong prey drive

Have owners that are in denial that their dog has an issue.

In general, the dogs that are most likely to be attacked are those that: service.

Never think your dog will ‘just get over’ being attacked. They are most probably living in a state of anxiety. After being attacked, your dog may show one or all of the following signs - constant lip licking when out of their ‘safe place’, frequent yawning, shaking, resistance to walking excursions, out-of-character reactions to other dogs approaching or fully shutting down.

George Cecato for Mayor

A Vision for Progress:

Why I’m Running for Mayor of Coffs Harbour

After serving on the Coffs Harbour Council for the past eight years, I’ve witnessed both progress and stagnation. Throughout my tenure, I’ve championed critical projects that I believe are vital to the growth and prosperity of our city. However, I’ve also faced significant opposition from the current majority on Council, who have consistently voted against key community infrastructure projects. This resistance to progress has stifled our city’s potential.

Coffs Harbour is at a crossroads, and now more than ever, we need leadership that is committed to building a brighter future. We need a mayor and councillors who are serious about driving positive change and who are willing to take the necessary steps to ensure our city reaches its full potential. The time for change is now, and I’m ready to lead that change with a fresh perspective and a positive approach.

Tackling the Challenges:

My Vision for Coffs Harbour

If elected as mayor, I will focus on two monumental opportunities that have the potential to reshape the future of our city: the completion of the bypass and the redevelopment of the foreshores.

The bypass, once completed, presents a unique chance to transform the heart of Coffs Harbour. By reconnecting the two halves of our CBD into a cohesive

and vibrant zone, we can improve traffic flow for locals commuting to school, work, and shopping destinations. Additionally, enhancing intersections along the highway will make travel within our city smoother and more efficient.

Equally important is the redevelopment of our foreshores. This project has been long overdue, and it’s time to bring it to life. My vision includes creating new parks and public spaces, improving beach access and views, expanding space for cafés and restaurants, and developing tourist accommodations and playgrounds. We’ll also address much-needed upgrades in parking, amenities, and public safety, all while driving economic renewal. Coffs Harbour has waited long enough – it’s time to make this vision a reality.

I also plan to reinitiate the conversation with our community about the possibility of an Entertainment Venue and a Regional Athletics Centre, both of which could bring significant cultural and economic benefits to our city.

Building Trust: Ensuring Transparency and Accountability

Local government exists to serve its people, yet too often, it feels like the relationship is reversed. My leadership will be grounded in a culture of consultation, respect, and transparency. Our team has a proven track record of working effectively with others and leading with integrity. We’re committed to restoring trust between the Council and the community, ensuring that decisions are made in the

best interests of all ratepayers.

Meet the Team: Passionate Leaders for a Brighter Future

Vote for John O’Brien for a Stronger Coffs Harbour

John O’Brien, a dedicated husband and father of five, has called the Mid-North Coast home for many years. Alongside his wife Gypsy, John is a committed community member whose deep ties to the region inspire his passion for fostering the healthy growth of Coffs Harbour. With 15 years of experience in infrastructure delivery, John is exceptionally qualified to enhance Coffs Harbour’s strategic planning framework. Lismore floods demonstrates his expertise and unwavering dedication to improving local communities.

John believes in maintaining affordability and liveability in Coffs Harbour. He is committed to applying downward pressure on rates, rents, and service costs, ensuring that the needs of all residents and businesses are met without compromising their quality of life.

As part of his vision for a vibrant community, John advocates for the preservation of parking and car access across the shire and addresses the challenges of homelessness and vagrancy with compassion and practicality. He understands the impact of higher population density in the CBD on crime and antisocial behaviour, particularly during fringe hours, and is focused on creating safe, welcoming environments for all.

John also supports small businesses within the Coffs CBD through innovative ideas like rezoning alleyways as ‘shared zones’ to reduce excessive regulations, fostering a thriving local economy.

A well-respected and approachable public figure, John engages with local and state leaders, supports people experiencing homelessness, and enjoys community life with his red heelers at the dog beach.

Join John O’Brien in his mission to strengthen Coffs Harbour’s infrastructure and community well-being. Together, we can build a brighter future for our region.

Tony Judge for Mayor

Woopi Local Tony Judge for Mayor Tony Judge wants Council to be more connected and responsive to our community. A Council that listens more, collaborates with other Councils and taps into the State Government for opportunities to make the Coffs Coast a better place. That’s why he is running for Mayor.

“I’m running with a team called Your Community Voice. That’s what I have been in my first term as a Councillor – a voice for our community. I successfully stood up for the Woolgoolga community to keep the poincianas that are so much of the character of our village. I was the sole Councillor to oppose the original design for the Woolgoolga Cycleway. I worked with a wonderful group of women who were concerned at the steep price rise for aqua aerobics classes to keep those classes affordable. I took each of those positions because I listen to our community. I know that the people who live here are the experts in their own lives. They deserve to be heard.”

roads, public spaces and services. We want to work with the State Government to get more social and affordable housing. We want to work with neighbouring Councils to solve our waste management problem.

“We also know just how much locals value the great environment we live in. We want to clean up our waterways and protect the natural assets that make it a great place to live. We value community harmony and the diversity that makes the Coffs Coast unique. We also know we can’t take that for granted.”

“I am running with a team who share my passion for our community. We want to get the basics right – maintaining

“It’s a big job and being Mayor is not a work experience placement. After a term in Council, learning and engaging I feel ready to take on the role for our community.

“But more importantly, I want to do it with our community. That’s how we will get it right.”

Coffs needs a Council that listens to you. It should be your partner in delivering the services you need and the local events you love. It needs to look after our precious environment, plan for the future and deal with the big problems. Council must communicate with you and engage on the issues you care about. It needs to be accountable, consultative and transparent. Most of all, Council must remember that it works for you and your family.

Paul Amos for Mayor

Team Moose

Woolgoolga has long been cherished by its residents and newcomers alike, and it’s easy to see why. For those fortunate enough to spend time in this coastal gem, the town’s unique allure quickly becomes apparent. Since my son and his family relocated here three years ago, I’ve had the opportunity to witness first hand why so many choose to make Woolgoolga their home.

As Mayor for the past three years, my focus has been on driving progress while preserving the essence of our closeknit villages. Our goal is not just to maintain but to enhance the vibrant spirit of our villages. This has been achieved through expanding recreational opportunities and fostering communal spaces.

One of the stand out achievements is the $32 million Wiigulga project, which has transformed our recreational landscape. This impressive facility caters to a wide array of activities, from basketball and cricket to pickleball, dance eisteddfods, wedding receptions, and even an upcoming orchid show. Such a versatile venue is a testament to our commitment to providing diverse recreation options.

The parklands in the area are also thriving, with the recent addition of a new park near Sandy Beach now being hailed as one of the finest in the region. It offers families a beautiful space to gather and enjoy.

Improvements in connectivity have been a significant focus

as well. Enhanced bus services and improved pathways have made travelling to and within Woolgoolga more convenient. Community feedback led to the creation of a shared access path into the village, while the newly inaugurated Whale Trail offers a scenic route that is sensitive to the local landscape, drawing visitors from near and far. Our group has a proven track record of initiatives that enhance Woolgoolga’s appeal. As we approach the upcoming elections, we hope to continue this work and invite you to support us in our ongoing efforts.

Jonathan Cassell for Mayor

As a current Councillor with the City of Coffs Harbour, I have a strong track record for delivering outcomes from driving climate leadership, endorsing a Great Koala National Park, fighting for a healthy drinking water catchment, pioneering a Shark Bite Emergency Response Program and taking action on Coffs Harbour’s beautification.

Every motion I raised passed, albeit sometimes amended, and I collaborated with my fellow Councillors to protect the Jetty Foreshores from over-development.

My vision for Coffs Harbour is to ‘future-proof’ our community for the long term.

As a coastal region, a hotter world needs to be front of mind, as spelled out in Council’s own 2023 Climate Change Risk Assessment report that ranked sea level impacts as high. As part of this vision, I am championing our region as the City of Parks and Gardens. The environmental and health benefits of a connected Parks and Gardens network across our region are broadly recognised, from the cooling effects of shade to recreational activities. I imagine the Jetty Foreshores as the jewel in the crown and our central park for locals and visitors with exercise and modest tourism infrastructure that one day may need removal due to rising sea levels.

During my time on Council, I sat on five City committees and did my best to attend each one throughout the term. I was appointed Chair of the Koala Plan of Management

Committee, Cultural Advisory Committee and the Sustainability Advisory Committee. I believe I filled my role in these committees to the best of my ability. I have enjoyed my time as a Councillor and look forward to another term, hopefully as your Mayor.

I am a strong local voice in Council who will deliver on financial and environmental sustainability outcomes.

TOGETHER, WE THRIVE

Harbour is not just a picturesque destination; it’s a vibrant community with immense potential for growth and prosperity. As the local government election approaches, we are focused on creating a thriving, connected community that truly reflects the passion and investment of its residents and businesses.

Our vision for the Northern Beaches is clear: a place where unique local businesses are well-supported and successful, driven by their passion for what we are collectively building. We want businesses that are deeply invested in our local economy because they believe in the future we are shaping together.

Our open spaces, playgrounds, footpaths, roads, and infrastructure should be a testament to the pride we take in our community. They should reflect the value we place on the Northern Beaches, an area that significantly contributes to the council’s revenue through rates. It’s time for our infrastructure to match the level of commitment we show as a community. But what does this vision look like in reality? It’s about making the right choices and focusing on what truly matters to our community. We need to complete projects like kerbs and gutters, not leave them half-

This isn’t just about me; it’s about us. Real progress happens when the community comes together to make our vision a reality. That’s why it’s crucial to focus on what’s important to the Northern Beaches: finishing kerbs and gutters, building the pool, completing the Whale Trail, maintaining footpaths and roads, and providing youth facilities like skate parks from Red Rock to Moonee. The Cheese Lady

From field to wheel

Have you ever wondered what it takes to keep a cow through her milk-producing years?

The costs can vary widely depending on where you are, the price of feed and the infrastructure needed to milk her. Let’s break down the investment you’ll need to keep a cow like Buttercup happy and productive.

First off, there’s the cost of purchasing Buttercup herself, which can set you back a fair amount.

Feeding Buttercup isn’t cheap, she’ll need lots to munch on to keep those milk jugs full.

On top of feeding, you’ll need to factor in veterinary care to keep Buttercup healthy, housing to shelter her from the elements, and labour to milk and care for her. All these extras can really add up!

When you consider all these expenses, the total cost of keeping Buttercup over her productive lifespan of 5 to 7 years can climb to around $11,000.

Of course, this figure can vary based on where you live and the scale of your operation. Please spare a thought for all our dedicated

Beachside Beauty

dairy farmers who work 365 days per year to keep Buttercup happy and milk and cheese on our shelves. Buttercup will produce an average of 28 litres of milk a day. But how much cheese can you make from that?

Parmigiano Reggiano: If you’re aiming to produce a 40 kg wheel of this iconic cheese, brace yourself— you’ll need a whopping 550 litres of milk, or about 14 litres per kg.

Cheddar: This classic cheese requires about 12 litres of milk for every kilogram.

Brie: Soft and creamy Brie is a bit more efficient, requiring around 8 litres of milk per

kilogram. It’s easy to see why we home cheesemakers pop into the supermarket to purchase milk when making cheese at home!

If you’re intrigued by the idea of making your own cheese, I’d love to show you how!

104.1 CHYFM

It is with a heavy heart I announce that this will be my last column for Woopi News as I am returning to Melbourne now that my tenure at 104.1 CHYFM has ended.

It’s been a five-year mammoth task and labour of love. Having been in the broadcasting industry for over 45 years, this was the perfect job for me to continue my long industry association in broadcasting and give back – just like others have to me when I was at school and fascinated by radio. I have relished working in radio and television around the world. I’ve honed my craft, skills and expertise working on stations including Double J/Triple J, KTHU in Hawai’i, Triple M, 2UE and 3AW, and on television programs including Simon Townsend’s Wonder World!, The Great Outdoors, Hey Hey It’s Saturday, and Better Homes and Gardens. I also worked with touring artists, including The Wiggles and Icehouse, as project coordinator and promoter representative on the Powderfinger/Silverchair “Across the Great Divide Tour” and every Big Day Out since its inception.

When I arrived in May 2019, the station lay abandoned, filled with broken furniture, outdated IT systems, antiquated studio equipment, and lacking basic facilities like disabled access, inadequate infrastructure for safety and unstructured governance. It functioned more as a drop-in centre than a professional community broadcasting hub, with volunteers lacking training, structure and mentoring.

This was an opportunity to get the station back to its core values. When

Salvation Army Pastor, the late John Townsend, started the station in 1973, it was to give local youth life skills and connection to the community. It was about entertainment, inspiration, information, education and being the voice of youth in the community.

Leaving 104.1 CHYFM now, I leave behind a transformed station. 104.1 CHYFM is now modernised with stateof-the-art digital studios and industrystandard broadcast equipment – providing on-air volunteers with reallife experience, secure IT infrastructure, comprehensive training programs, and unprecedented sponsorship support. But it has not come without its trials and challenges. Not long after I arrived in 2019, Coffs Harbour was ravaged by devastating bushfires, disrupting normal operations and challenging our resilience. Homes were evacuated, schools closed, and volunteer broadcasters could not present their shows.

As we began to recover, the Covid-19 pandemic struck, causing further upheaval and tests of our resilience, tenacity and revival. The station lost all its sponsors, compelling me to personally support it financially to ensure critical broadcasts continued and the station remained on-air. Despite these hardships, we secured crucial grant funding from the Community Broadcasting Foundation, which believed in my strategic plan and the station’s future. This funding enabled significant upgrades to our facilities, studios and equipment, including outside broadcasting capabilities and improved transmission equipment.

Unfortunately, my plans for introducing a range of initiatives, community partnerships, fundraising events, expanding our programs, school holiday workshops, and partnering with Bishop Druitt College for radio broadcast training as a Year 9/10 elective (with prospects of introducing this into the curriculum at other high schools in 2025) and relocating to a more suitable and accessible facility have now been shelved.

I am very proud of my achievements, and the support from the community for the station during my tenure has been overwhelming. I am grateful for the opportunity to play a role in the station’s evolution and revitalisation. We also have more dedicated listeners who have supported the station by becoming members. We also have more sponsors than ever, and businesses supporting the station are signing up as member discounters. To all the young volunteers who, like me when I was their age, are excited and passionate about broadcasting, I feel honoured and privileged to have been your trainer, mentor, and supporter. I am in awe watching you blossom into confident content makers and presenters. I hope you will continue to entertain, inspire, inform, educate and be the voice of youth. Youth voices in the community are important and must be heard. Thank you to all who have supported me and 104.1 CHYFM along this journey. While my time here concludes, and as I return to Melbourne, I carry cherished memories and the hope for a bright future for community broadcasting in Coffs Harbour.

Embracing Sustainable Living

Hello, I’m Kirsty

Hello, I’m Kirsty. With over twelve years in sustainability and environmental education, I’ve seen the urgent need to protect our planet. Now, I’m excited to bring focus back to basics on the stunning shores of the Coffs Coast.

As spring arrives across Australia, it’s the perfect time to refresh our homes and embrace a clean, green start. Many conventional cleaning products contain harmful chemicals that can be detrimental to our health and the environment. Fortunately, there are simple, eco-friendly DIY cleaning options that are effective, affordable, and safe.

Vinegar, a common pantry staple, is a powerful natural cleaner. Its acidic properties cut through grease and grime. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle for an all-purpose cleaner ideal for counter tops, sinks, and

glass surfaces. Add a few drops of essential oil like lemon or tea tree for a pleasant scent and extra antimicrobial benefits.

Bicarb soda is another versatile cleaner and deodoriser. Sprinkle it on surfaces like sinks and stovetops, then scrub with a damp cloth to tackle stains and odours. For tough grout stains, mix bicarb soda with water to form a paste, which works wonders on tiles and grout lines.

Lemon juice, with its natural acidity, is great for cleaning and deodorising. Use a lemon half to scrub cutting boards, counter tops, and stainless-steel appliances to remove stains and odours. You can also mix lemon juice with water in a spray bottle for a refreshing, antibacterial surface cleaner.

For windows and mirrors, skip the chemical sprays. Instead, use a mix of water and a splash of vinegar or lemon juice. Spray on the surfaces and wipe clean with a microfibre cloth for a streak-free shine.

By embracing these DIY eco-friendly cleaning methods, we can achieve a sparkling clean home without harming our health or the environment. Welcome spring with these simple, back-to-basics solutions and enjoy a season of freshness and sustainability.

Woolgoolga Whale Trail

The Woolgoolga Whale Trail, a new gem in town, was officially opened recently. It’s a beautiful walk that we can all enjoy. I secured a $1.1 million grant towards this link between the town centre and the headland, opening up a world of beauty and adventure for us all.

It’s not just a walk, it’s a safer journey. The Woolgoolga Whale Trail now includes a walking path, viewing areas, car parking, landscaping, and revegetation, all designed to ensure your safety and comfort.

It is great for locals, tourists, and businesses in town and increases safety for those doing the walk.

Stay Sharp with your local Accountant

Is your investment property genuinely available for rent?

This question is more commonly asked about holiday rentals or other short-term accommodation but can also apply in other circumstances. So why is this question important? It has to do with the deductibility of expenses associated with an investment property, particularly costs that are incurred regardless of the amount of rental income received, like loan interest, land rates, insurance and strata levies.

Law Learnings

Getting employment contracts right

As a small business owner, I understand that hiring and retaining the right staff for your business can be a hassle. Are employees going to be full-time, part-time or casual? You need to know whether an award applies to your industry or whether you need to have an enterprise agreement in place instead. The wages and entitlements you are offering to employees need to be in accordance with the applicable award or enterprise agreement. Then, you have to advertise, interview and find the right employee for the role.

The ATO seems particularly interested in properties with low rental income and/or high deductions that trigger a rental loss, where the property has been said to be ‘available for rent’ all year but isn’t genuinely available.

A landlord can only deduct costs associated with their investment property when it is genuinely available for rent. Merely advertising the property for rent either through an agent or online platform isn’t enough. Factors that indicate a property is not genuinely available include:

- the location, accessibility, or condition of the property means that it’s unlikely that tenants will apply to rent it.

- the landlord has placed unreasonable conditions on renting the property, such as above-market rent in comparison to other properties in the area, requiring tenants to have references for short-term stays or having conditions like ‘no children’ or ‘no pets’.

- refusing to rent out the property to a potential tenant without an adequate reason or reserving the property for private use or family and friends to stay free, or at discounted rates, is also an issue.

Where a property isn’t genuinely available for rent, it’s important to apportion the expenses and only claim for the periods the property was available. If the rental schedule were to be reviewed and the ATO found it wasn’t genuinely available, a possible outcome would be that they would remove the rental loss so that the property breaks even.

If the property is positively geared, the outcome may be to reduce the expenses or increase the rent to reflect market value.

More information is available on the ATO website or perhaps you can discuss this matter with your accountant if you have any concerns.

It can be very time-consuming and frustrating. I am sure there are many other business owners that, like me, receive job applications by people who have no intention of attending the interview or really don’t actually want the role being offered but need to satisfy job seeking criteria for their Centrelink payment. It can be quite tempting to just hire someone “off the books” or as a subcontractor on a verbal agreement only and pay them cash to avoid all the hassles and paperwork. Unfortunately, as a solicitor, I can tell you that this type of employment arrangement never ends well.

The hiring process is a good opportunity to prepare a job description, setting out exactly what the role entails and to consider the necessary licensing and other qualifications needed for the position. The Fair Work Ombudsman website has some great resources on the hiring process, as well as information on awards and employment entitlements. If you include the job description in your employment contract, then both you and your employee know what your expectations are.

When you do find the right person to fill a role in your business, it’s worth getting some legal advice to get the employment or subcontractor agreement right. There have been changes to the definition of casual employment, independent contractor, and unfair contract terms in recent months. Employees will also now have the right to disconnect outside of work hours from 26 August 2024 for non-small business employers and from 26 August 2025 for small business employers.

While there are many generic employment contracts you might be able to access via the internet, they may not cover issues like these adequately. You should also consider whether there are specific considerations for your business that should be included as part of the contract such as a social media policy, a confidentiality clause, a non-compete clause and clauses dealing with return of things like work phones or vehicles.

Finally, don’t forget to add the new employee to your workers’ compensation policy. If an employee is injured in the workplace, this will allow them to have access to payments for lost wages and medical expenses as soon as liability is accepted by the insurer and you will not need to source the funds for those expenses yourself.

While it might be a bit of a hassle doing things the right way, it can avoid a much bigger legal hassle later!

Heart To Heart

Thomas was a sceptic Testimony of others not enough for him.

‘Seeing is believing’ type who needed material, testable, certified evidence to change his mind about how the world works.

Thomas, a close friend of Jesus. One of the twelve who hung out with Jesus for three years.

No doubts about Jesus’ death. A scarred, dead body seals the deal on that. Thomas absent when the once dead Jesus dramatically appeared to his followers hiding away in a locked room. Scared stiff the religious leaders would come gunning for them now they had eliminated their leader, Jesus.

Thomas’ mates on such a high when he returned, he probably suspected he missed out on an alcohol fuelled evening. Blabbering on about seeing Jesus. Thomas blunt response, ‘Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.’

Thomas wanted real evidence. Not some fairy story from his delirious mates.

A week later Thomas got what he asked for.

Thomas with the others in their locked room. Jesus turns up again. Suddenly appearing in the room. Speaking directly to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.’ Which Thomas promptly did!

Jesus understands the laws of science. He created them! He knows it’s impossible to see him in the flesh when he not physically present.

So he spoke these profound words to Thomas. Timely for us all. ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen me and yet have believed.’

Like it or not we were all born too late to see the once dead now alive Jesus in the flesh.

‘Seeing is believing’ response inadequate, impossible. Last direct descendent to see my convict ancestor alive; my great grandfather as a young boy. Yet no doubt of existence of convicted sheep stealer Henry Hanger.

Intellectual honesty requires willingness to accept the range of evidentiary proofs. ‘Seeing is believing’ useful but limited. Attested documentary evidence significant in confirming truth of past events impossible to see because of passing of time. Documents allow hearing of eye witness accounts. Listening to ancient wisdom. None more significant than the Bible, revealing life, death and resurrection of ‘the man you can’t ignore’, Jesus of Nazareth. Why not park your scepticism? Take a risk. Small amount of time needed to read an account of Jesus life and teaching. My suggestion: Gospel of John. Read the hard copy or download it from www. biblegateway.com. Stay tuned.

Stress and You

I’m becoming increasingly aware of the aging population, people being diagnosed with life impacting illnesses, experiencing emotional, physical or financial trauma, topped off with challenges finding suitable support. Some families seem to be able to work together; however, many are very fractured. People may feel sad, angry, or something else, and many feel alone.

I also see how all these stressors are contributing to everyday anxiety, depression, overwhelm and exhaustion. And they are pre-cursers to mental, physical and neurological health conditions, including Dementia.

Amongst other causes, September has several Awareness days: Tuesday 10 - Suicide Prevention Day.

Theme: Change the Narrative is a call to action, to “Start the Conversation”. The aim of the theme is to raise awareness about the importance of changing the narrative surrounding suicide and transforming how we perceive this complex issue.

Thursday 12 – RUOK? Day. Encouraging conversations to check in with others.

Theme: Ask “RUOK?” Any day because life happens every day. Theme: “Time to act on Dementia, Time to act on Alzheimer’s”

I chose these three causes, due to my personal experience with them.

Over the past three years, I’ve had more to do with suicide, mental health, Dementia and Alzheimer’s than I’d liked. Firstly, in the capacity of a carer and on the phone as Lifeline Crisis Support, then my own experience. It was hard and scary, but I learned a lot!

Change starts with a conversation whether you need support or are a supporter.

Do whatever it takes to summon the courage to ask directly for help or, when asked, “R U OK?”, to say “No! I need help.”

AND ... if you are asked to help, would you know what to say or do? Do you have the skills to start a support conversation? The first important step when you or others need support, is to trust just one person. Someone who feels safe.

If you need support, Emergency numbers are on the Welcome page of every Woopi News. Visit Fluro Friday, 6.30am at Woopi Surf Club. You won’t miss us… we are in the bright colours. Or contact me, through the details in the QR code.

Send Your Pests Packing

Being in the industry for over 25 years, we cannot stress enough, about how important it is to have a regular General Pest Control Service completed on your property.

Not only does it keep all those pesky bugs at bay it also paves the way for a much healthier life! Pests come in all shapes and sizes and range from cockroaches, ants, termites, rats, mice, spiders, silverfish, mosquitoes, bedbugs and many more.

Not only can they cause damage to properties and we are talking about what every home owner dreads… TERMITES!

But some cause damage to our health. Bites from spiders always appear to be the most dreaded but we are also talking about allergies, asthma and even food poisoning! Food poisoning can be caused by cockroach droppings/faeces being in contact with food preparation surfaces and storage areas.

Mosquitoes can cause extreme illnesses but they are not usually included in the everyday run of the mill General Pest Control Service. We would be advising our customers on how to lower the risk of attracting mosquitoes to their properties as opposed to applying chemical. In saying this, in some instances though, it is necessary to treat areas that have become out of control!

Whether you contact us or any other business, we should be all insured, qualified and experienced.

Ask as many questions as you need to and most Pest Control Technicians should be ready to discuss with you about a step by step method to handle the situation and get your pests under control. Let them know if you own pets or you have any concerns about the chemicals being used.

So seeing as, Spring is upon us and this season usually prompts people to start Spring Cleaning, make sure you add your General Pest Control Service to your ‘SPRUCE UP THE HOUSE’ list.

Brock Stubbs Riding High

The 2023-24 motor racing season has been quite the ride for young driver, Emerald Beach’s Brock Stubbs and Stubbs Motorsport!

Kicking off the season with a bold move to transition to a Mitsubishi Mirage, the team covered a whopping 10,180 km across various tracks in Australia, experiencing a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs.

The transformation began with the meticulous acquisition of a Mirage, which was then stripped down to its bare shell for the installation of a roll cage in July 2023.

As the season approached, the team’s dedication became evident through their detailed efforts in bending, welding, and painting, preparing the vehicle for competition. This level of preparation truly showcased the team’s professionalism.

Brock (who is only 16) started motor racing when he was only 6 in quarter midgets and go karts. His love for speed was passed down from his grandfather and father.

Brock and the team started their 2023/24 season in November at their home track, Grafton Speedway. This set the stage for his subsequent participation in the Australian Title. His outstanding performance earned him the recognition of having the 4th quickest car in Australia, and the Stubbs team secured the honour of being the runner-up for the bestpresented race car and team in the country.

Notably, the team started from the mid-pack position at 12th and emerged with a commendable 5th place in Australia. Throughout the season, Brock competed in three State Titles in New South Wales, Queensland, and

South Australia.

Reflecting on the season’s achievements, the team proudly highlighted the following accomplishments:

 14 heat wins

 7 feature wins

 1 2nd place finish

 2 3rd place finishes

 5th place in Australia

 4th quickest car in Australia

Front-row qualification at the SA Title

Runner-up for the Best Presented Car in Australia

The culmination of the season was marked by the Grafton Speedway Presentation, where Brock’s remarkable contributions were duly recognised. Brock was honoured with titles such as Club Champion, Best Presented Junior Sedan, 1st place in the Track Feature Point Score, 1st place in the Overall Track Point Score, and the Overall Club Point Score Junior Sedan Top Stars.

These exceptional achievements throughout the season were made possible through the unwavering support of Brock’s sponsors. MI Organics, Edwards Trucking Company, Caddies Lawn Care, Victor Rullis & Family Funerals, Rigoni Earthworks, Man Cave Merchandise, Butcher Photography, Hessions Auto Parts,

Living Well Chiropractic, Hair on Vaughan, The Sugar Shack Australia Lolly Shop, Bods Cleaning Services, Blue Water Mechanical, and all other contributors played an instrumental role in enabling Brock and the team to compete in national and state championships.

Woolgoolga Junior SLSC

Newport SLSC Athletes Inspire Next Generation at Woolgoolga Nipper Clinic.

Last month, the sands of Woolgoolga Beach were alive with enthusiasm and energy as four top athletes from Newport Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) hosted an exciting Nipper Clinic for Woolgoolga SLSC competitors, aged from Under 9 to Under 19.

The visiting athletes—Jackson Borg, Jemma Smith, Maddie Spencer, and Phoebe Savage—brought their elite skills and experience to the eager young lifesavers. The morning was packed with hands-on training and tips, covering essential surf life-saving techniques.

The clinic kicked off with a fun yet challenging bunny hopping drill, followed by ski jump starts that had the nippers mastering their balance and speed.

The athletes then focused on refining paddle techniques, ensuring that the young competitors could navigate their boards with confidence.

The day culminated in an iron session, where the younger nippers got to test their endurance and versatility under the watchful eyes of their experienced mentors.

The clinic was not only a day of learning but also an inspiring experience for the nippers. Watching high-level athletes share their knowledge and passion for surf life saving was a highlight, sparking enthusiasm among the next generation.

C.ex Woolgoolga Bowling Club

This month, we held the C.ex Woolgoolga Bowling Clubs AGM; the outcome was the new Committee for 2024/25. President: Stuart Bailey, Secretary: Jo Burgess, Vice President: Ken Costelloe, Bowls Organiser: Lyn Kaufmann Treasurer:  Jill Merchant, Committee Members: Karen Stirling, Julie Hinchley and Greg McInerney.

On July 28, the club held its annual CanDo Bowls Day to raise money for this great cause; we are proud to say that the day was able to raise $13,400 with bowls, a mega raffle and local donations. The money raised will go towards helping patients and families in the Coffs/ Clarence areas. We are happy to say CanDo can

now help 120,000 people in the local area.

The Bowlers had a great state-of-origin game on July 20. Sadly, the trophy was won by Victorian Bowlers, who visit us every year at this time. Watch out next year; Woolgoolga is already feeling lucky.
