Welcome to Woopi News...

Hi everyone,

Brad and I are excited to bring you this edition and share with you all the news we’ve gathered over the past month. Firstly, we would like to introduce you to our cover guys, Andy and Rhys. They own the Woolgoolga Bottleshop on Beach Street, which has just undergone some new branding under the umbrella of the liquor group Cellarbrations.

The guys are really nice and are absolutely loving renovating the old drive-through to include a beaut new walk-through store. The official relaunch weekend is July 11 till 13 – so read on and keep an eye on our socials for more news on the giveaways. We’ve got lots of stories about awesome locals, but one of my favourites would have to be Chris on page 9. He’s about to head back to Africa to resurrect his safari business, so if you have a holiday coming up, please check out his story.

You also will get to meet Grahame and Emma who have joined forces to produce some absolutely stunning copper and brass art pieces. We have ‘In Memoriums’ for two locals who have passed: Robert (Hip Shot) Smidt and John Rooth. We would also like to acknowledge the passing of our family friend and my dad’s surfboat rowing mate, Neil ‘Ebor’ Welsh. We’ll see if we can bring you more news about Ebor’s illustrious rowing life

in the next issue. Members of both Woolgoolga and Red Rock Surf Clubs are mourning this loss.

We’d also like to introduce you to a new member of the Woopi News team. Sarah McPhail is joining us to assist with lead generation, a crucial aspect of promoting our advertising sales. I heard someone repeat a story recently where they had asked a business why they didn’t advertise in Woopi News. The business’s answer was, ‘Because I haven’t been asked.’ So, here is an open invitation to everyone and anyone who has something they would like to advertise please feel free to drop us a line (lisa@ woopinews.com.au), and we will be more than happy to help you with your advertising needs. Welcome Sarah!

Each month, we hide the R U OK? logo on the cover, and each month, we list the important emergency and

mental health phone numbers on this page. We also publish an extensive community listing where you can find just about every community club or group in the area. (Let me know if I’ve missed you.)

This month, thanks to the sponsorship of Woolgoolga Real Estate, we have brought back the all-important Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) list. You will find it on the inside back page. We hope you never need it.

Thanks for reading. ~ Lisa PS: Congratulations to Gurmesh Singh for being elected the Deputy Leader of the NSW Nationals. No matter what your political persuasion is, you have to be proud of this Woopi High boy.

Not to mention, they’ve slashed prices on many products to ensure they’re ultra-competitive on everyday deals. You can also join the Cellarbrations member loyalty program which will give you great member only pricing whilst earning loyalty points to use towards future purchases.

They have extended the opening hours to 8.30am–8pm Monday to Saturday and 10am–7pm on Sunday.

Their vision for Cellarbrations Woolgoolga is simplethey want it to be ‘The Best Store in Town.’ With these upgrades and their fantastic team, it’s clear that they’re on track to win over the locals and tourists alike.

They also own the Woolgoolga Beach Lotteries & Newsagency (which is run under the watchful eyes of long-term locals, Belinda and Kirsten) at the front of the bottleshop entrance and plan to continue the great customer service the ladies already provide (all dogs are welcomed with a little doggy treat) and hopefully keep the products they sell fresh and fun. You can find both businesses at 66 Beach Street.

Room for Rani – The Princess Warrior

Rani Macdonald is a little girl with a big heart and an amazing smile.

Rani and her family’s lives were turned upside down four years ago when a horrific accident left a beautiful 8-monthold baby non-mobile and non-verbal. Rani suffered a hypoxic brain injury when she choked on a piece of mango. This left Rani with a significant disability and complex medical needs. Her father Rogan’s ability to administer first aid in a crisis, saved Rani’s life.

Rani has already had to overcome many challenges that no child should have to face. She has survived numerous bouts of sickness, multiple seizures and far too many hospital admissions.

Rani, affectionately known as the warrior princess, has surprised and impressed doctors, family, and friends with her strength, resilience, and will to live.

Rani’s parents, Rogan and Steph McDonald, and her big sister Millie, are working very hard to help Rani live her best life. Rani enjoys various activities, including arts and crafts, music therapy, concerts, and Surfing for the Disabled.  She loved her birthday party with a petting zoo. She can use her sense of touch, sound, and smell to develop an unspoken bond with animals.

Steph, Rogan and Millie often find time to help others. Helping at Millie’s school, feeding the volunteers who were moving the So Fun gymnastics centre, cooking for others, and helping people in need were not easy in their busy lives, but they still achieved it.

Although grateful for the tremendous help they receive from Rani’s nurses, support workers, and her extensive medical and therapy teams, sometimes families with children with complex needs crave a little family privacy.

With the generous support of the Corindi Beach Hotel, members of our great community are organising a family fun day to raise funds to build a room for Rani. The room will give this family a little privacy from the constant flow of people through the house and provide a safe place for Rani to receive her 24-hour care and therapy. A new room would be life-changing for this family.

The family fun day will be held at the Corindi Beach Hotel on Saturday, October 26. There will be music and entertainment for all ages.

The organisers are currently collecting donations for a raffle, auction, car boot sale and prizes. If you know anyone who could help, please ring Deb Gentle on 0477 774 385 or Julie Wales 0458 813 676.

If we work together we can help create a better, more inclusive world.

Mgunga Tanzania Safaris

Come with Dreams, Leave with Memories

From the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Peter ‘Chris’ Kategire has been calling Woolgoolga home since 2021. Having met his wife and Woopi local, Jane Body, while she was working throughout East Africa in 2017, Chris says he ‘moved for love’ and that recently having his first child on this beautiful coast has been a blessing. But with 15 years of experience as a safari guide, the postCovid tourism boom is too much to resist. Chris and his family will soon be returning to Tanzania to revive his company Mgunga Tanzania Safaris.

Chris’s grandparents and parents are all from Tabora, in the west of Tanzania and spent much of their lives close to nature, so appreciation for wild places has always been in his blood.

A message from Kevin Hogan, MP

Noel Bultitude

I spoke in Parliament recently to congratulate and thank Noel Bultitude from Woolgoolga on his 75 years of service to the Woolgoolga RFS and his OAM Medal.

Noel first joined the brigade at 14 as a volunteer with his dad when the first meetings were held in the local fruit-picking shed.

Over the following 75 years, Noel worked his way up to the Senior Role as a Deputy Group

Captain.

Noel’s contributions to the brigade extend beyond his service. Through his weekly fundraisers, he played a pivotal role in securing a new station, which continues to serve the community to this day.

Still regularly responding to incidents and helping the brigade, Noel is a trusted and respected crew leader.

Thank you, Noel, for your distinguished 75-year-long career with the Woolgoolga Rural Fire Brigade.

Woolgoolga District Orchid Society Volunteer Grant

It was great to secure funding for the Woolgoolga District Orchid Society to assist in purchasing equipment for workshops, shows and the 23rd AOC International Conference, which they will be hosting.

The Woolgoolga Orchid Society provides excellent information about orchid growing, cultural advice, breeding programs, conservation, and the latest advances in growing techniques.

I’m looking forward to seeing their new equipment in use soon.

Free the Funk with Fluro Friday

Free the Funk Family Fun Day at the Fantastic Moonee Beach Hotel.

Last month, Grant Trebilco, the founder of One Wave and Fluro Friday, visited Woolgoolga and the Northern Beaches schools as part of the Free the Funk Schools Tour. Grant collaborated with Lifeline North Coast and spoke to the students of Woopi High, Mullaway and Corindi Public Schools about ways to look after themselves and their mates if they are feeling down. Dressed in their finest Fluro, the students joined in on the fun way to address a difficult subject. As part of the activities, Lifeline was also able to launch the Lifeline Push-up for Mental Health challenge, which was running right through June. Students at the schools joined in with great enthusiasm.

During Grant’s visit a Fluro Friday Family Fun Day was held at the Moonee Beach Hotel. Everyone had such a good time they have decided to run this as a regular event on the first Friday afternoon of the month starting this month.

This event is a fantastic opportunity for everyone, regardless of age, to join the Fluro Friday group and have a great time. It’s especially perfect for those who find early mornings a bit challenging or have to rush off to school and work. At the event, you can look forward to a variety of activities. Kindness Rock Painting, a Dress Up Photo Booth, and an Open Mic will be there. The Open Mic is a safe space for anyone, regardless of age, to showcase their talents.

Whether you want to sing, dance, tell a joke, or even juggle a chainsaw, the stage is yours to try something new. So turn up in your brightest colours (if you wish) and be ready to join the fun from 4pm on July 5. Head for the stage and look for the bright colours.

I hope I’ve got all these names right –Iluka, Kaley, Hannah, Eddie, Millie, Indigo, Stevie, and Bonnie from Mullaway Public School dressed for the occasion

Classical Indian music is not viewed as entertainment for the mind; it is a journey for the soul to experience improvisation and creation right then and there; the space and the audience play a huge role in this music, hence why playing in an intimate venue enhances the power of connection with the listeners.

Disciples of great master musicians in India with whom they have studied for over 30 years and continue to this day; Vinod and Bobby belong to unbroken lineages going back centuries.

Performing from the ancient Raga (Melody) and Taala (Rhythm) repertoire, come and enjoy a special night exclusively curated and hosted by Naidu Theatre Company for the first time in Woolgoolga (14 Featherstone Drive).

The Story of Bobby Singh and Vinod Prasanna

Bobby Singh

A tabla maestro with roots in England and Mumbai, Bobby is a student of the renowned tabla maestro Pandit Nikhil Ghosh. Under the guidance of Ghosh’s senior disciple Aneesh Pradhan, Bobby’s talent blossomed, leading him to become an internationally acclaimed tabla player in both traditional Indian classical music and cross-cultural genres. His collaborations with esteemed Indian musicians and his ARIA award-winning work on the album ‘Djan Djan’ have solidified his status as a highly respected musician in Australia’s world music scene. Recently, his musical journey was captured in a documentary titled ‘Viva, I Belong Everywhere,’ which was aired on SBS.

Vinod Prasanna

Hailing from one of the oldest Bansuri families in Benares, India, Vinod made a dedicated decision at the age of 14 to fully commit to his passion for the Bansuri, following a 250-year family tradition. As an award-winning Bansuri virtuoso, Vinod Prasanna is recognized for his exceptional renditions of traditional and contemporary Indian music. His emotive melodies and exquisite improvisations set him apart as a performer of Indian classical, world, and meditation music. With 25 years of international performing and teaching experience, Vinod currently resides in Melbourne, showcasing the finest of Indian music through his divine flute performances.

S John Rooth, OAM – RIP

John Rooth sadly passed away last month on June 2, leaving a big hole in our community and in many hearts.

John Rooth passed away peacefully at home with loving wife Robyn beside him. Proud father of John Jnr and Nick. Caring stepfather of Bram. Cherished father-in-law of Karen and Cath. Loving grandfather of Holly, Tom, Joe, Lachlan and Erin. Very proud great grandfather of Ava and Sienna.

John was born in Sheffield in September 1930, and his happy childhood was interrupted by the war when bombings and uncertainties changed his youth.

He went on to graduate from the University of Sheffield although his stories tell more of a passion for cricket than for study. Mandatory National Service saw him as an Officer in the RAF, serving in Germany for two years. His interaction with Australian Servicemen fed a desire for adventure, and after two years of teaching in England, he migrated to Australia in 1959.

He arrived with his wife and two-yearold son John to a job as Deputy Head at All Saints College in Bathurst. From there he moved into Adult Education

in Tasmania and this was followed, now with son Nick as well, to a role at Adelaide University. Here, his love for adventure really blossomed, and he initiated outback tours where hundreds of participants lived under canvas and were tutored in geology, art, natural history and Indigenous Culture. Welcomed by the local tribes they experienced and learned stories of Country, native art, corroborees - all very rare experiences in those days. A record of these trips is kept in the Adelaide Museum.

John’s next role was as a Director in the Immigration Department in Canberra. Managing the influx of European Migrants in the late 1960s he developed Language Schools, liaised with various ethnic groups and assisted the successful settlement of thousands of immigrants. After eight years he combined his management skills and his love of education, moving to the University of New England as Director of Continuing Education, where he led the drive which has resulted in Adult Education being a core subject in most tertiary education facilities.

John retired to the Coffs Coast in 1988 with wife Robyn and took up hobby farming but whilst he loved the farm work his heart was in helping others. He soon became Chair of the local Coffs Hospital Board which led to other health related voluntary roles, including managing the Area Disability Committee. After being asked to chair the growing Coffs Community Transport organisation, he led it for 20 years, and it grew to become a major national provider. In Woolgoolga, he was an inaugural member of the local Red Cross Branch and helped it grow to become a busy provider of humanitarian services. He was also a long-time member of the Probus Club, where he was honoured with Life Membership. He was awarded an OAM

in 2003 for his community services. Along with all this he was a member of the Northern Beaches Anglican Church for over 30 years where his passion for music led to multiple periods as Choirmaster, a role allowing him to share his knowledge of church music. John is survived by his wife, Robyn; his much-loved sons John and Nick and daughters-in-law Karen and Cath; his stepson Bram, for whom he developed a great love; five grandchildren of whom he was so proud; and two adored great-grandchildren. John was much loved and will be much missed. Upped Stumps and gone to the Pavilion.

John Rooth with his wife Robyn did so much for our community

Planning Your First Branding Photoshoot

Planning Your First Branding Photoshoot: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hey there! I’m Kirsty, a Brand Photographer based on the scenic Coffs Coast. If you’ve been following my articles, you already know the immense benefits of branding photography.

Now, let’s dive into how to plan your first branding photoshoot to ensure it perfectly captures your brand’s essence.

Define Your Brand: Understand your brand’s core values, mission, and target audience. This foundation influences every aspect of your photoshoot, from the message you convey to how you want your audience to feel when they see your images.

Set Clear Goals: Determine what you want to achieve with your photos. Whether refreshing your website, creating engaging social media content, or developing promotional materials, clear goals will guide your planning and maximize your session’s effectiveness.

Choose the Right Photographer: Find a photographer whose style and vision align with your brand. Review portfolios, read reviews, and discuss your goals to ensure they understand and can bring your vision to life.

Develop a Shot List: Create a detailed list of needed shots, considering angles, settings, and image types like headshots, product photos, and behind-the-scenes shots. This list will guide your shoot and ensure you capture all essential images.

Select Locations: Choose locations that reflect your brand’s personality. Whether a cosy café, bustling city street, or serene beach, the location should visually communicate your brand’s story. Scout locations ahead of time to avoid surprises.

Plan Your Outfits and Props: Select outfits that align with your brand’s colour palette and style. Props can enhance your photos and add a personal touch. Consider items relevant to your business that help tell your brand’s story. Prepare for the Day: Ensure a smooth photoshoot by planning ahead. Schedule professional hair and makeup, pack necessary items (outfits, props, shot list), and arrive early to set up and get comfortable with the location.

Review and Utilise Your Photos: After the shoot, review and select the best photos. Use these images across your marketing channels to create a cohesive and engaging visual identity, integrating them into your website, social media, newsletters, and promotional materials.

By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared for your first branding photoshoot, ensuring it captures your brand’s essence and resonates with your audience. Ready to plan your shoot? Let’s connect and bring your vision to life!

Choosing The Right Dog For You

A dog can change your life in such a positive way, but if you choose the wrong dog, it can become a huge source of stress.

Some points to consider:

 What is your financial situation?

Dogs are not cheap to have as pets. You need to think about the cost of buying the dog, feeding it a good diet, veterinary care, equipment, grooming, professional training fees and even boarding costs.

 What is your living situation?

Do you have a large backyard, an apartment or a rural property? Your environment must be suitable for the breed of dog you buy.

How many hours per day will you be home?

If you will be away for long periods, you may need to reconsider having a dog or be willing to make arrangements for it, such as dog daycare.

 What is your age?

If you are a senior citizen, a young pup may not be for you. Consider adopting

an older dog that is already trained and just needs a companion to spend time with.

What is your physical capability? If your physical capability is impeded, you really need to think long and hard about the breed of dog that you acquire. You should also consider engaging the services of a good dog trainer to ensure that your dog is welltrained and easy to handle.

Do you have very young children? Are your kids at an age where they will be able to cope with and actually enjoy a dog or are they too young to understand and may become frightened?

 Breed of dog

Whatever a dog is bred to do may impact its behaviour as a pet. For example, a dog that is bred to protect livestock will most likely bark and protect your yard. This may not be suitable in suburbia. A dog that is bred to herd will likely chase and round up. These dogs need exercise and a job to keep their brains busy.

Some dog breeds are prone to health

problems. For example, brachycephalic (squishy-nosed) dogs are prone to breathing problems, dogs with long backs may develop spinal problems, and larger breeds are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia.

Research, be informed, don’t be spontaneous and consider all of the above.

Woopi that Was

Last month we brought you a photo and editorial comment from the first Woolgoolga Advertiser published in February 1985.

This month we would like to share with you the personals from page 3 and 4.

PERSONALS

Sam’s Place, one of our local restaurants, situated at Mullaway, owned and operated since its inception by Bob and Jenny Brasch was recently sold. The new proprietors are the Casper and Ellison families who are looking forward to continual local support. They have quite a few changes and improvements to make as well as a new trading name.

***************************

The proprietors of Sunset Caravan Park, Bruce and Vonnie Noble, are slowly recovering from an exhausting, if profitable, Christmas holiday. For the first time in their eight years of ownership, they were totally booked out, with barely a patch of green grass to be seen between all the tents and vans. To add even more chaos, the nobles were feeding 15 to 20 people each meal time, as friends and relations arrived to spend their holidays in Woolgoolga.

Whilst on the Nobles, also at home is their son John who has just successfully concluded his first year at New England University, where he is currently studying for a Bachelor of Financial Administration degree.

***************************

There may be some benefits in being involved in a car accident after all! Long time resident, and ex Woolgoolga policemen, Mr Ces Marsh,

was involved in a minor car accident recently (in which he was legally in the right), which has now resulted in him being able to discard his walking stick, after having had to rely on it more and more over the years. Ces is now almost able to patrol the beat again he feels so good, as he did in years gone by.

***************************

Clive and Merijka Bartnett proprietors of Wonder Gardens, where all products are grown hydroponically, or without soil, are off to Hawaii in a couple of weeks to attend another international conference, related to this ever increasing concept in agriculture. Since plunging into this field a few years ago Clive and his wife are now achieving hard earned success, showing the determination and dedication required to become leaders in a new field. Clive now spends the majority of his time consulting and setting up systems for other people who are anxious to realise the obvious benefits of this sterile growing medium.

***************************

Congratulations to Stephanie Clinch, of Emerald Beach on winning a scholarship in music. Winning this award is a great achievement and Stephanie thoroughly deserves this recognition, as she works very hard at her music.

***************************

Bruce and Diane Sanders of Woolgoolga recently expanded their family when Diane gave birth to Holly, a sister for Danielle. All are doing well and from all reports the nights are proving fairly restful.

***************************

Former student of Woolgoolga Primary School, Annette Robinson, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Robinson of Moonee Service Station, is now working as a chartered account in Lae, New Guinea, for an international firm of accountants.

After gaining her HSC at Coffs High in 1978, Annette gained her degree in Business Financial Administration at the UNE in 1981, with high distinctions. For the last three years she worked for a large firm

of accountants in Sydney. Whilst home at Christmas Annette announced her engagement to Greg Sokolnikoff of Carlingford.

***************************

Congratulations are in order to Rick and Lauren Croucher on the birth of their son Brett born the 25-1-1985.

***************************

Another young man with plenty happening in his life at present is Stephen Clark. Stephen is the eldest son of Wes and Jean Clark and has commenced prac. teaching at Woolgoolga High School where he was a student until a couple of years ago. He resumes his university studies this year, where he will be in his 3rd year of studying for a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Diploma of Education. He recently became engaged to Kathy Fraser of Blacktown, and formerly of Edinburgh, Scotland who is also undertaking a similar degree. Rumour has it that Wes and Jean are trying to prolong the engagement for some years, as they feel they are far too young to become grandparents.

Wyz Wimmin in the Spotlight

You read about it in the May edition of Woopi News and you came! Thanks to the generous support of local community, the good news is that Wyz Wimmin & Friends’ production Into the Spotlight was a sell-out success! And judging by audiences’ enthusiastic and joyful reactions, you all enjoyed the show as much as the players. Extra special thanks from actors Laurel (Emerald Beach) and Lee (Woopi) for coming out to play.

Written by one of Wyz Wimmin’s founding members, local playwright Carrolline Rhodes, the play was a little bit drama, comedy, pantomime, musical and had something for everyone.

Australian veteran actor, director and writer Mark Fitzpatrick, who was in the audience for Saturday’s show, was “blown away by the size of the audience”. Mark has written eighteen feature film scripts, written, directed or performed in numerous stage productions and has worked with the likes of Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger and Colin Friels.

Mark gave the show a glowing review.

“It was funny, quirky and wonderfully performed,” Mark summed up the show.

He went on to add that “The actors played their roles exquisitely ... Anne (Joyce) did a wonderful job directing… Helen (Kirkpatrick) was hilarious…[and] I am still applauding everyone’s performances.”

“I was pleasantly surprised at not only the performances but

the whole production,” he concluded.

Wyz Wimmin & Friends keeps going from strength to strength. The company is already working on its next production. WW&F looks forward to entertaining you for decades to come!

Thanks again for coming out to support local theatre, stories and venues. If you would like to be on the Wyz Wimmin mailing list or become a member of the company and join in the fun (as well as acting, there are many skills needed behind the scenes), please contact wyzwimmin@gmail.com

Woolgoolga Performing Arts Studio

Immerse yourself in an electrifying 70-minute commercial dance performance inspired by Billie Eilish’s music, presented by the Senior VTP dancers of Woolgoolga Performing Arts Studio. From the moment they take the stage, you’ll be enthralled by a blend of neon electric visuals and a variety of dance styles, including contemporary, lyrical, commercial jazz, hip-hop, and acro, creating a captivating tapestry of movement and emotion. Choreographers Hayley Evans and Tegan Haley, inspired by Billie’s themes of self-discovery, resilience, and growth, showcase the spirit of innovation and creativity that defines their community.

Performing at the Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium and The Taree Manning Entertainment Centre, this show transcends entertainment, offering a transformative and inspiring experience. It’s a celebration of youth, passion, and artistic collaboration, sure to ignite the imaginations of both aspiring dancers and Billie Eilish fans. Cast members Matt and Ella G share some magic moments from the show and their journey of the production so far.

MATT: What I believe audiences love most about the commercial dance show ‘BILLIE’ is the moving art ... Dance itself is already a megacreative art; however, this show is like nothing you’ve seen before (not like your regular dance concert or show). This is a 70-minute piece of art and expression!

ELLA: What I believe audiences will love most about BILLIE, is truly being able to see and witness how each individual connects with the music differently. But also being able to see that when we all come together as one we make magic.

Some of my dance idols and inspirations would have to be our very own Miss Tegan and Miss Hayley. The choreography is out of this world. The mindset and positive attitude they surround us students with and, of course, just the never-ending hard work that they consistently put into this show, and each individual dancer is so incredible and so inspiring.

Tickets are on sale now via woolgoolgaperformingartsstudio.com Don’t miss out on this unforgettable show. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

The Cheese Lady

Winter Cheese Delight Winter is the perfect season to cosy up by the fire with a glass of red wine and a delectable array of cheeses.

Among my favourites is a baked Camembert, a simple yet indulgent treat that never fails to impress.

This dish is incredibly easy to prepare and offers endless possibilities for toppings.

To begin, place the Camembert in a Camembert baker or a small round baking dish, ensuring there’s some space around the cheese.

Score the top of the cheese and add your preferred toppings.

Some of my top picks include a generous drizzle of honey with walnuts, blueberries with a splash of port, and a mix of red wine, thyme and garlic.

Once you've topped the Camembert to your liking, pop it into a preheated oven at 180°C for about 10 minutes or until it becomes soft and gooey.

Serve it straight from the oven with slices of fresh pear and either toasted or fresh artisan bread.

If you want a memorable

experience or wish to elevate your cheese-making skills, consider making your own Camembert.

I offer a Double Cream Brie and Camembert class where, in just two and a half hours, you'll learn to craft this legendary cheese in your own kitchen.

The class includes wine pairings that complement the cheese. In all of my

classes, there are always plenty of cheese tastings and a cheese-inspired lunch that showcases the cheese.

For more information about my classes, visit www. artisancheeseschool.com. au or give me a call at 0477 000 262.

Embrace the season with the ultimate winter cheese experience. Enjoy!

Building The Live Music Scene Supporting Local Community Radio

The 1980s were a golden era for Australian music, with bands building followings by playing at pubs, clubs, town halls, carparks and Blue Light Discos. Record companies signed standout bands, sent them to recording studios, and put them on the road. Radio stations couldn’t get enough, with Australian content onair exceeding 30%.

Touring was done by road due to high airfare and freight costs. Bands used a Tarago for transport and a truck for their gear, with sound and lighting crew doubling as roadies and drivers. A typical tour started in Sydney, moving through the Central Coast, Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Gold Coast, Brisbane, and the Sunshine Coast, then up the Queensland coast and back inland to towns like Ipswich, Armidale, and Tamworth. They would then head to Victoria, playing in cities like Wangaratta, Shepparton, Geelong, Bendigo and Melbourne, where they could spend a week performing at various venues.

On a typical Saturday night in St Kilda, venues like the Palais Theatre, the Palace, The Venue, the Esplanade Hotel and the Prince of Wales would be packed.

Bands played late, allowing fans to enjoy dinner and multiple shows, with plenty of late-night options. Tickets were bought in advance to avoid missing out.

Touring has evolved with cheaper airfares, reducing the need for extensive road trips. Bands target specific towns and cities, rely on venues with in-house PAs and lighting, and local hire companies for quality backline gear.

Embracing Sustainable Living

Hello, I’m Kirsty. With over 12 years in sustainability and environmental education, I’ve seen the urgent need to protect our planet. Now, I’m excited to bring focus back to basics on the stunning shores of the Coffs Coast.

As residents of the breathtaking Coffs Coast, we are surrounded by a wealth of natural wonders. From the serene rainforests of Dorrigo National Park to the pristine beaches of Sawtell and Woolgoolga, immersing ourselves in nature rejuvenates our spirits and helps instil sustainable living practices in future generations.

Winter is the perfect time to explore the Coffs Coast. Amidst cooler temperatures, the region showcases a unique beauty, from mist-shrouded bush settings to dramatic ocean swells. It’s a time for cosy coastal walks, invigorating hinterland hikes, and enjoying nature’s simple pleasures.

Spending time in nature offers numerous benefits for our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. The tranquillity of our coastal forests and the rhythmic sounds of waves provide solace from modern life’s stresses and cultivate a deep sense of connection to the world around us. This connection fosters a greater appreciation for the environment and a commitment to sustainable living practices.

By engaging with the natural world, we understand its delicate balance and the importance of preserving it for future generations. Exploring the diverse ecosystems from mangrovelined estuaries to towering eucalypt forests, inspires us to minimise our environmental impact. Whether reducing waste, conserving energy, supporting local ecosystems, or advocating for conservation efforts, our experiences in nature shape our values and behaviours, paving the way for a more sustainable future. Moreover, spending time in nature provides invaluable opportunities

for outdoor education, particularly for the next generation.

By involving children in activities such as nature walks, beach clean-ups, and wildlife spotting, we instil in them a love and respect for the natural world. These experiences foster a lifelong connection to nature and empower them to become responsible environmental stewards.

Reconnecting with nature on the Coffs Coast is a source of joy and inspiration and a catalyst for positive change. By embracing our natural surroundings, enjoying winter activities, and instilling sustainable living practices in future generations, we can create a legacy of environmental responsibility that will endure for years to come.

The First Man to Fly an Aeroplane in Australia

The next must-see exhibition to put on your calendar is the ‘Printmakers Perspective.’ The grand opening on July 26 promises to be a lavish event with gourmet cuisine, fine wine, and live music.

The exhibition will highlight printmakers specialising in relief, etching, intaglio and collagraph. There will also be a special collaborative installation piece that guarantees to bring a different vibe to the exhibition.

It’s not long now until entries are accepted into the Woolgoolga Art Prize (formerly the Lillipilli Art Prize). The Woolgoolga Art Prize opens on the August 30.

In addition to exhibitions, the Woolgoolga Art Gallery offers a variety of classes and social groups to suit everyone. New enrolments for Term 3 classes and workshops are now being taken. Call into the gallery and speak to the staff about what might be up your creative alley.

Art enthusiasts and the local community are invited to visit the Woolgoolga Gallery, located at 73 Turon Parade, Woolgoolga, for a daily dose of art appreciation from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free, providing an excellent opportunity to support and celebrate local artists. Why not grab a coffee in town and make a day of all things creative?

In 1909, the Age newspaper in Melbourne announced they would pay 20,000 pounds to the first man or woman to fly an aeroplane in Australia. The prize money attracted Eric Weisz to set sail for Melbourne from the United States, with a VOISIN 60 hp biplane packed in crates on board his ship. After arrival, Eric employed motor mechanics to assemble the aircraft on a large paddock on the outskirts of Melbourne. Thousands of locals surrounded the paddock to see the first man to fly a powered aircraft in Australia or attempt to do so and ‘come a cropper’. They cheered madly as Eric flew his biplane into the air, circled the paddock and made several landings and take-offs.

The crowd went wild and carried Eric shoulder high from his VOISIN on 18 March 1910. After claiming the 20,000 pounds, Eric and his wife, Bess, organised 14 exhibition flights in the coming weeks before thousands of Australians. He flew the VOISIN at Rosehill Racecourse on 18 April 1910 in front of a crowd who paid a shilling to attend. Eric was once again carried shoulder-high around the racecourse.

Amazingly, Eric had a further lucrative plan for his time in Australia. His flying escapades set the scene for his more famous escape acts, illusions, card tricks and outdoor stunts, specialising in escapes from handcuffs and straitjackets. His stage name was Harry Houdini. So when short of conversation at a party, ask, ‘Who do you think was the first man to fly a powered aircraft in Australia in 1910? When people don’t know or make the wrong guess, tell them this story.

Registering a business name

Starting a new business can be exciting and nerve-racking, but too often people forget a few important steps.

If you wish to trade under a business name, it’s a requirement that it be registered with ASIC. Too often, I see people paying excessive amounts to register or renew business names.

There are many businesses that spam business owners via email or post, offering to renew their business names when it’s quick and easy to do it yourself via business.gov.au You will need to set up a login, but this just makes it easier to renew your business name or edit your details. The cost from 1st July has increased slightly to $44 for one year or $102 for three years. When picking a business name, don’t do anything until you have checked the name is truly available and registered it. I’ve seen people pay for things like logos, business cards and signage, only to find someone else is using that name. Before registering the business name, check a few things are available, like the domain name you might want to use for a website. Check the name isn’t being used on someone else’s social media. Just because it’s available on ASIC doesn’t mean someone else hasn’t set up profiles under that name or is even trading under that name without registering it against their ABN.

You can check the ASIC website to see if a business name is available. If you’d like to search the Australian Business Register (ABR), you can do this via the ABN lookup tool at abr.business.gov.au You can search by ABN, legal name, or business name and refine the search by state or post code. It’s important to note that the registration of Trading Names has been unavailable for several years now. These names are gradually being phased out and replaced with business names. As of 1st November 2025, trading names will no longer be visible on the ABR.

Law Learnings

Acting as an Executor

If someone has passed away and you have been nominated as the executor of their estate, would you know what to do?

The first thing to consider is whether you want to be the executor. This is an important question because executors have the option of renouncing, but only if they have not intermeddled in the estate affairs. Circumstances where executors should consider renouncing include a bankrupt estate where the administration could be left to the creditors or where the executor has a conflict of interest in performing their duties.

Funeral arrangements will need to be made, and a formal death certificate will need to be applied for, usually by the funeral director. Centrelink should also be notified as soon as possible to avoid any overpayments.

The original will needs to be located. Some people keep it in a safe place at home but often only retain a copy, and the solicitor who prepared the will retains the original. It is also important to confirm that no later will was made.

The next step is to locate the estate assets, notify the asset holders of the death, provide them with a copy of the death certificate, identify the beneficiaries, and consider whether a grant of probate will need to be applied for. An executor may wish to obtain legal advice to understand their responsibilities before proceeding with the estate administration. Any reasonably incurred legal fees would be paid by the estate. For small estates with no real estate, it’s likely the estate could be administered without a grant, provided the executor is willing to sign deeds of indemnity releasing the asset holder from any claims against the estate. A grant of probate will be required where NSW real estate and/or substantial funds/shares are held. There is less risk to an executor in distributing an estate if a grant is obtained,  a notice is published on the NSW Supreme Court website, and the distribution doesn’t occur until at least six months after the date of death.

Executors should also obtain advice from an accountant regarding whether there are any outstanding tax returns or amounts owed to the ATO by the deceased, relevant CGT considerations for the estate, and whether the estate is required to file a tax return. The executor should also make enquiries to confirm that none of the beneficiaries are bankrupt.

Once all the assets have been collected, any estate debts paid, and relevant time periods have expired, provided that no family provision claim has been notified, the executor may then proceed with the distribution of the estate in accordance with the will.

Being an executor comes with a lot of risk and sometimes not much reward when there is a difficult estate to administer, conflicting beneficiaries or a family provision claim is made. I strongly recommend seeking legal advice at an early stage to understand your responsibilities and the legal requirements of administering an estate.

Heart To Heart

Favourite NRL team, Wests Tigers, settling again in wooden spoon territory. Favourite AFL team, Sydney Swans, soaring above the pack. Time, energy watching, supporting, defending, rejoicing, weeping over my teams. Doesn’t really matter. Only a game. What really matters: life and death. Whether death is the final full stop in life’s journey. End of the journey or new beginning? In the last Heart to Heart we had a significant conversation about death the universal experience. Christian response to death, what follows, shaped by the experience of one man: Jesus Christ. Historical fact Jesus died. Christians go into unchartered territory in their Creeds, ‘The third day he rose again from the dead.’ The resurrection of Jesus, Achilles heel of Christian belief or solid rock on which uniqueness of Jesus, truth of Christianity stands? Bible hangs the ‘Achilles heel’ out for anyone to snap it; if they are able. ‘If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.’ Disprove the resurrection. Christians should pack up their bags, go home, stop being a nuisance. There were many eye witness testimonies to the reality of Jesus resurrection. Worth reading to determine their truthfulness or otherwise. Countless personal testimonies ever since, of confidence, even to the point of death, Jesus rose from the dead; still alive today. Beyond that, more to reflect on. As a law student in my past life, weighing up evidence, drawing conclusions from evidence beyond reasonable doubt, fascinates me. As does watching others change their minds upon closer inspection of evidence. As a young man, Frank Morison, author of ‘Who Moved The Stone?’, believed ‘His (Jesus) history rested upon very insecure foundations.’ He describes his movement to conviction of the truth of Jesus’ resurrection by study of the biblical evidence. ‘It was as though a man set out to cross a forest by a familiar and well-beaten track and came out suddenly where he did not expect to come out.’ The point of entry was the same; it was the point of emergence that was different.

Ross Clifford, lawyer, pastor, used in his book ‘Leading Lawyers Look at the Resurrection’ testimony from the world’s greatest trial lawyers. Examining evidence as to the credibility of the resurrection, beyond reasonable doubt. One wrote, ‘At the end of our examination, putting the witnesses through Judge Chandler’s five tests, one is left to say that the only rational conclusion is that the witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus Christ are witnesses of the highest credibility. If we are unable to accept their histories, why would we accept the histories of any other incident of the human race? I believe in the resurrection of Jesus. Do you?

Stay tuned.

Stress and You

Death

I know talking about death is not a comfortable thing to do.

However, it is something that we will all experience. And we will experience the pain of the death of others before we experience our own. What is it about death that causes discomfort or stress?

Statistically, even though we are supposed to be more educated, we are sicker than ever and coupled with the ageing population, people are dying at a higher rate.

Bronnie Ware, an Australian palliative care nurse, surveyed many of her terminal patients and wrote a book, ‘The Top Five Regrets of the Dying’. And what she discovered was that they are:

1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

2. I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.

3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

I can guarantee that everyone would relate to many of these. So, if you received a tragic diagnosis and prognosis, which of these regrets would you be enduring?

Look at the five regrets and answer these questions. What lifelong, unfulfilled dreams do you have?

What have you missed out on due to working so hard?

What emotions have you suppressed that are always with you that you wish were not?

Who have you lost contact with, and whom would you love to see or chat with?

How often do you say, “I will be happy when….?”

What is really contributing to your stress? Now, I’ve spoken before about it being your thoughts about your circumstances, not the circumstances, that cause stress.

Mark Twain said: “We regret the things we don’t do more than the things we do.”

So, what are you waiting for?

A dream is only a dream unless you have a plan and start taking action steps towards it.

Do you really have to work so hard? What can you take off your to-do list?

What trapped emotions can you release to lighten your emotional load and burden?

Ring or visit that someone!

Decide to be happy while you … pay off the house, lose the weight, or whatever it is for you.

What’s on your bucket list? If you don’t plan, it’ll stay in the bucket, and you’ll die with regrets. Please don’t wait until you retire or are unwell to consider your mortality to live out your dreams; it may be too late!

MALHI-BLAIR’ Memorial Shield

During the month, the annual R U OK? match between the Woolgoolga Seahorses and the Macksville Sea Eagles was played.

The game is a tribute to all who have passed from suicide, particularly Sukhi Hundal, whose family plays for and supports the Seahorses, and Kyeisha Blair, whose family plays for and supports the Sea Eagles.

The First Grade Woolgoolga players burst through the bright yellow banner wearing their yellow R U OK? socks.

Sukhi’s brother, Sukpal Malhi, gave a heart-wrenching speech, encouraging everyone listening to reach out if they ever feel the struggle of life. This was followed by a minute of silence, and then the game began.

Both teams fought hard, with the Macksville team taking the win during the last minutes of the game. 18-16.

Woolgoolga Soccer will also be running a similar day on August 4 - The Harmeet Shetra Memorial Shield.

Woopi Netball

Last month saw three remarkable Lions Club Woopi Netball teams make their way to Sydney to participate in the Netball NSW Senior State Titles at Camden. The event, which hosted over 2,500 players and drew in more than 6,000 spectators per day over three days, proved to be a massive affair that showcased the competitive spirit of netball.

The weather conditions were

favourable throughout the event, with cool temperatures and no rain. The teams showed their mettle in the highly competitive netball matches, making their supporters incredibly proud.

The U15 team made an impressive leap from Div4 to Div3, displaying their rightful place in the higher division through their highly competitive performance. They secured seven wins, a draw, and six losses, finishing in a commendable 7th place. The U17’s team, competing in Div4, demonstrated

Our employees have years of experience and leadership skills, we can offer a range of plant hire, site supervisor, project management and labour hire solutions for your projects.

their competitive prowess with 11 wins, a draw, and six losses, clinching the 9th position. Lastly, the Opens Team put on an incredible performance, securing 13 wins, a draw, and only three losses, finishing in a remarkable 3rd place in the super tough Div2 category.

The teams were exceptional ambassadors for Woopi Netball, on and off the court. Their outstanding performance was complemented by the unwavering support and the hard work of the support staff, umpires, physio, primary carers, scorers, and the legion of Woopi supporters. The teams also extended their gratitude to their sponsors, whose support made these remarkable experiences and pathways possible for the players.
