Op Ed by Patricia Dorfman

A report from RentCafe* examined data about 1000 cities in the US, noted that Long Island City has the greatest number of new apartments built, close to 13,000 (more on the way) since 2010. The finding would indicate to many that uncontrolled building, without adequate infrastructure or even planning, or consideration of quality of life, is worse than we thought. Is there a plus for us who are not out-of-area speculators, giant real estate brokers, lawyers doing deals, developers or owners? No. MORE BUSINESS FOR ME? If you are a small to medium-sized business in Queens, such as a supermarket or restaurant in areas where overdevelopment is spreading, you might think, if we get more skyscrapers full of people, at least I will do more business. Has that happened elsewhere in NYC? No, because without the Small Business Jobs Survival Act, at the end of your lease, your location is too valuable to let you keep it. MORE JOBS? If you are a public housing resident, some hear of a bright side such as we will have more jobs or promised training. Have promises been kept elsewhere in NYC? Environmental activist Elizabeth Yiampeirre of Uprose noted promises are not kept. “We just become second class citizens surrounded by rich people.” She suggested we all visit the development in Chelsea to see how life changes for the worse. With the current closing of small firms, there will not be enough “training” to make us the newly employed. PLANNING: If you have recently moved into LIC, and are enjoying the bustle, hipness, views, and proximity to Manhattan, you might think that more development will not affect you. But do you see a dependable, bigger public transit system planned to hold the population increase? One ferry holds the same number of people to one subway car. Do you see public land being turned into parks for you or your kids? Do you see small businesses you use for daily needs thriving? Do you see traffic and parking getting better? Do you see any housing yet for middle income, poor people or homeless people? PROPERTY VALUES: If you don’t mind paying for, as the administration calls it, a new city, being built on decking over Sunnyside Yards, because it will increase the value of your property, why? Unless you cash out and move, you will have next door 180 acres of rail yard and surrounding land under construction for 20 years, a skyline with 60-story buildings, displacement of current residents and businesses, and an unpleasant density of population. Will your air be cleaner to breathe? Will you have parking, affordable shops, less traffic? How will the new city be powered, Astorian Mitch Waxman asks, new power plants? ISN’T THIS CITY LIFE? If you think that this is the natural ebb and flow of neighborhoods and cities, poorer people moving out and richer moving in, why is there no place less expensive to move to as in the past? Because NYC in its entirety is being gazed at for developers who think nothing is in their way, with many of us believing, falsely, that it is “inevitable.” We have the vote. Taxpayers will pay for the needed infrastructure if built, not developers. We were told that “affordable housing” would be affordable. It is not. When you hear “community stakeholders” or “visioning sessions,” know that that a plan has been made and now it will be presented to you by trying to make you believe you have had a say in it. WHY NO SMALLER BUILDINGS? If you wonder why developers have asked for rezoning, instead of just building the current legal height, the reason is developers are would rather earn the most possible – it is more profitable to get the law changed, that is, rezoning, to not just make some money, but a lot. It is more profitable to have gotten “Mandatory Inclusionary Housing” passed which allows lucrative bigger buildings and 421-A renewed, to avoid property taxes. The Real Estate Board of NY, a lobbyist, has worked for this moment in NYC history, to cash in their chips. ELECTEDS: If you wonder why the mayor and elected leaders are not taking strong stands we would like, which favor the people, neighborhoods, small businesses of NYC and not big real estate, the reason is most believe they cannot. They have learned that the funds available to run and win are only available from big real estate, and if they do not comply, their careers are over. They have seen media smears for those taking the long view to save the city. Many non-profits in NYC rely on public grants, and they, too, think they have to keep silent to survive. What taxpayer-funded structure executive would feel comfortable allowing a “stop overdevelopment” summit, even though most would agree it is crucial public issue? MEDIA: If you believe that there must not be a big problem because if there were, the big newspapers would let us know, you would be mistaken. The massive amount of advertising money flowing from real estate is much to pass up. THE ACTUAL PLAN: Instead of uniting the two cities, rich and poor, as promised, the planning going on is one rich city. At the recent LIC “summit,” most spoke of wider development as “when,” not “if,” according to LIC’s Kenneth Greenberg. A developer, also chairman of the LIC BID, just asked for permission to install 36 feet of wiring in half the public sidewalk for his high-rise on Purves St. Why? FIRST FRIDAY’S The last “First Fridays” community social mixer event, hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside and held at the JV Daniels VFW Post # 2813, was a success raising over $ 200 plus foodstuffs for the benefit of those in need (funds and items were forwarded to the Saint Rafael’s Food Pantry) with a crowd of almost 30 attending. Thank you to Spicy Pizza for donating food for the event. The next “First Friday” will be held on July 7th at The Globe Tavern located at 49-10 Skillman Avenue, Sunnyside, NY from 7 to 10 PM. The event is both a fundraiser for the local food pantries (please bring a few non-perishable food items or a $ 10 donation) and a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors in a night of fun and conversation. The Globe Tavern is graciously offering drink specials throughout the event. The Club and its community partners hope to see you all there. For more information visit www.sunnysidefirstfridays.org.

A LITTLE RECOGNITION FOR THE VOLUNTEERS by Peter Ross

On the evening of Wednesday, June 14th (Flag Day!), Scouting leaders from around Northwest Queens diligently made their way to the Moose Lodge # 1642 in Maspeth. Was it to prepare for a camping trip, to run their 50th Scout meeting of the year, to race to get paperwork signed for that Eagle Scout Candidate (who was one day away from his 18th birthday!), or to purchase awards for a ceremony with the half an hour free he/she had to get to the store before it closed. Thankfully, on this night. it was for none of those things for which Scout leaders spend their “one hour a week” commitment to the program. This night was for relaxing (unless you were the ever working William Knight!), fellowship and recognition, without any youth to be concerned about, as these adults were attending the annual Pathfinder District Fellowship and Awards Dinner. At the event, MC’ed by Anthony Zalak with assistance from fellow District Activities Committee members Bill Kiernan, Henry Zalak and Tom Reilly (Chair), various honors and awards were presented to local District volunteer Scouters in memory of longtime Boy Scout Leader Gordon Bennett of Troop 106 in Middle Village. Gordon was a stalwart of the Scouting program in Queens and beyond and five years ago, after untimely passing, the District Awards were changed to bear his name, making them extra special to Queens Scouting leaders. The Unit Leadership Awards were presented this year to Cubmaster Eduardo Castro (Pack 201, Elmhurst) and Scoutmaster

Rich Parlini (Troop 96, Forest Hills). The Scouter Leadership and Cub Leadership Awards (for positions other than the unit leader) were conferred to Kristine Golsong (P-349), Martin Liranzo (P-349), Scott Thompson (P-96), Sunnyside’s own Nami Russo (P390 and District Cub Day Camp), Lee Chase (T-96 and District Aquatics program), John Mohr (T106), Kenneth Ngai (T-349) and Carol Rastetter (T-427). Rising Star and Scouter’s Key awards were also presented by outgoing

District Committee Chairperson Amy Shapiro to various leaders at the District level and she herself was honored and acknowledged for her three years of selfless work heading the District Committee during a period of tremendous change (in advancement and programming especially for the Cub Scouts, the addition of the Lions program, Scouting’s changing social views et. al.). The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the District Award of Merit to Craig Goodman of Ship 441 and

Troop 96 (for his years of dedication to the District and several Scouting units as Finance Chairman, Advisor, staff member for the District Aquatics program, Committee Member and more) and the Lifetime Achievement Award to Trudy Gaynor (Pack/Troop 349) for decades of service throughout the District and to her various units (Trudy was the first District Committee Chair for the newly formed Pathfinder District some 20 years ago when Queens Districts were consolidated and restructured, is still Committee Chair for both her units, a District Commissioner and Committee member on various District Committees). All honors

were well deserved. Following the presentations it was time for the real fellowship to begin. Raffle prize winners were chosen and with dinner already eaten it was time to work off some of those calories as DJ William Knight (T-96/C-96 and District Chairman) kept the adults in motion. Once cake and coffee were well settled in everyone’s digestive track and the various leaders finished making grandiose plans for the upcoming year, the streets of Grand Avenue fell into quiet once again and some well deserved rest was planned for (at least until summer camp!). A Scout leaders work is never done!

CLEANING UP THE TRASH

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

IN LONG ISLAND CITY

James Martin, ACE Executive Director; Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer; ACE Employee; Henry Buhl, ACE Founder On June 27th, Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer, ACE founder Henry Buhl, ACE Executive Director James Martin, Executive Director of the Horticultural Society of New York Sara Hobel, and ACE staff cut the ribbon on the new ACE Center for Workforce Development in Long Island City. “Beyond keeping our streets clean throughout Western Queens, ACE provides an essential public service by offering job training and work opportunities to homeless men and women throughout our city,” said Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer. “I’m proud to support ACE’s good work with funds from my office and am thrilled that they have chosen Long Island City to house their (continued from front page)

HOW DOES THIS BENEFIT YOU? Presumably, because future luxury dwellers will not mind the higher rent for the amenity. But how will that work out? Homeless people wander within blocks. There is an urgent citywide need for less expensive housing, not luxury. Our taxpayer-paid NYPD will be asked to remove those trying to sleep on the toasty public sidewalk. It is not wrong for the chairman try to make as much as he can from his building. The problem is that it is part a future that does not include the majority of us now living here or not believ-

new Center for Workforce Development that will help battle homelessness and give dignity and hope to so many for years to come.” “The opening of ACE’s Center for Workforce Development in Long Island City, Queens means greater access to lifechanging, job-skills training for men and women who are homeless,” said James Martin, ACE Executive Director. “Because of partners like Majority Leader Van Bramer, the men and women at ACE are able to gain supported work experience on sanitation teams that keep our Queens neighborhoods clean and beautiful for residents, businesses and visitors alike. We are proud to now call Queens home and look forward to giving back to this great community.” Majority Leader Van Bramer’s office has allocated $120,000 each year to the Association for Community Employment Programs for the Homeless (ACE) to provide street cleaning services throughout Western Queens. ACE helps homeless men and women achieve economic independence through job training, work experience, and a life-long support network. ACE began in the summer of 1992, when Henry Buhl organized local stores on his block in SoHo to offer jobs to homeless men and women in the neighborhood. The program grew into several neighborhood partnerships and was consolidated in 1997 into the Association of Community Employment Programs as an umbrella organization. Today, ACE services more than 400 people each year.

Council Member Van Bramer with NYC Department of Sanitation, Bob Piazza and Woodside on the Move On June 16th, Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer joined the Department of Sanitation and Woodside on the Move in Woodside to unveil 108 new trash bins for all of District 26, including 32 in Woodside, 27 in Sunnyside, 34 in Long Island City, and 15 in Dutch Kills and Astoria. Majority Leader Van Bramer allocated nearly $60,000 from the City Council discretionary fund to have new, hi-end trash bins installed throughout Western Queens. “After allocating nearly $60,000 for 108 new trash bins throughout Western Queens, I’m thrilled to join with DSNY and Woodside on the Move to unveil a beautiful new bin

ing that poorer people will be a concern. WE CAN CHOOSE A BETTER NYC: Overdevelopment is happening in plain sight, with our permission. While we worry about national news, the land grab of Queens continues and a city that could have been home as always to all incomes. Most of us believe we can do nothing about it. Why not contact your electeds now and email your community boards? They WANT to hear from us. Let the developers get the approval of the people or stop. *Story, Sunnysidepost **Full disclosure: The author signed the petition to include Councilman Van Bramer on the primary ballot. Groups such as Justice for All Coalition in Queens are speaking out. In their LIC march and rally at Queensboro Plaza June 22, speakers urged the need for unity and fairness in city decisions, opposing the BQX, LIC Core Rezoning as planned, Sunnyside Yards decking and in favor of the Small Business Jobs Survival Act. Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer pledged his support, and reiterated his promise to become key sponsor of the SBJSA. To Advertise E-mail SSabba@WoodsideHerald.com or call 718-729-3772

right here on Woodside Avenue,” said Majority Leader Van Bramer. “With more than a hundred new trash bins in Woodside, Sunnyside, Long Island City, Dutch Kills and Astoria, it will be easier than ever to throw trash in a bin rather than on the ground, keeping our streets clean for all.” “The businesses and residents along this corridor in Woodside deserve something special for having to live next to the noisy 7 train,” said Bob Piazza, President of Woodside on the Move. “Thank you to Jimmy for getting these new trash bins and for helping keep all of Woodside clean!”

GIVING TO OUR ENVIRONMENT

Sunnyside Reformed Church recently launched a Stewards of the Earth Program to address environmental concerns in and around Sunnyside. The program includes a new food scrap collection initiative (with the donation of two compost barrels from the Queens Botanical Garden), a “zerowaste” goal for the church (including composting, recycling, and green energy systems), and a food pantry and monthly community dinner made possible with donations from local supermarkets and restaurants. Dinners are held in the church basement on the first Sunday of every month at 6:30 pm and are free and open to the public.

The meals are vegetarian, and almost 100 percent of the produce comes from local retailers who are trying to reduce their carbon footprint. This summer the meals will also include fresh fruit and vegetables from the church’s own garden, a project spearheaded by the children in the Sunday School. Neighbors are welcome to visit the garden, bring food scraps to the church composting bins, and take part in the monthly dinners. The church’s long-term goal is to encourage all Sunnyside businesses to take a more active stance on environmental stewardship by redirecting their unused products from landfill to those in need.
