TRAFFIC SIGNALS GUEST EDITORIAL INSTALLED AT P.S. 11 On July 6th, New York City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined parents and children to celebrate the installation of a traffic signal outside of P.S. 11 on Skillman Avenue in Woodside, Queens. The traffic signal comes after months of advocacy from Council Member Van Bramer and the local community. “I am thrilled that the Department of Transportation has agreed to install these necessary signals and crosswalks in front of P.S. 11,” said New York City Council Member

Jimmy Van Bramer. “Vision Zero means that we need to see dangerous areas and prevent potential fatalities before it’s too late. This signal means that before the start of summer school, the children here will be protected.” “ DOT is excited to announce the completion of the installation of the signal infrastructure,” said Nicole Garcia, Queens Borough Commissioner, New York City Department of Transportation. “The two new traffic signals, which are designed to have coordi-

nated timing, and crosswalks will make it easier for everyone from our seniors to school children cross the street.” More than 1000 students call P.S. 11, The Kathryn Phelan School, home. The school building was recently renovated and expanded to meet the growing needs of the community and the entrance of the school was moved to the intersection of 54th Street and Skillman Avenue. The new traffic signal will make crossing Skillman Avenue to get to Woodside Library, opposite the school, safer.

TOWN HALL

Woodside on the Move (WOTM), a community based organization in Woodside, Queens recently held a town hall meeting to address Major Capital Improvements (MCIs) in which we mobilized more than 450 (our largest ever attended housing event) community members who live in rentstabilized buildings to fight against one of the biggest loopholes in the housing law. This loophole (MCIs) in the law is responsible for the elimination of affordable housing and the displacement of many citizens in minority communities. This law allows property owners to permanently increase the rent on rent-controlled apartments for repairs that tenants did not ask for or want. It Is responsibility of the owner of the building and they should not be allowed to force these costs on the most vulnerable to push them in the streets. our community to work together to eliminate, NOT reform MCIs from the law. They signed a pledge with the commitment to work on legislation that will eliminate MCIs before the end of the legislative session next year in Albany. We sincerely would like to thank every tenant and concerned citizen who made it to the forum to raise their voice, and demand from elected officials their right to have a stable and secure living condition in New York. We would also like to thank the WOTM housing team for their tireless effort in bringing this issue to the forefront as well as to the Catholic Migration Services team for their collaboration and active participation.
