Bishop Picks New “Dean” From Sunnyside/Woodside by Luke Adams th

Very Rev. Brian Dowd, Pastor of Queen of Angels, Rev. Msgr. Denis Herron, formerly of St. Teresa’s, and Rev. Thomas Pettei, former Pastor of St. Raphael’s. All gave the Woodside Herald a nice welcome.

On Sunday April 28 , Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio installed 22 priests from the Brooklyn/ Queens area at a special Vesper Service at historic St. James Cathedral Basilica in Brooklyn, including Very Rev. Brian P. Dowd, Pastor of Queen of Angels, who was made Dean of Sunnyside/Woodside and will be working with Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians, St. Raphael, St. Teresa, St. Sebastian, and Corpus Christi. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio approved the creation of a deanery structure to replace the parish clusters within the Diocese of Brooklyn. The clusters were groupings of parishes that worked together to enhance ministry in a particular area through collaborative efforts and the sharing of resources. Priests and parish staff members met together monthly to plan and implement shared programs and support one another. The clusters have existed since the last Diocesan Synod, 14 years ago. Bishop DiMarzio hopes that the deaneries might be able to serve the local parishes and the diocese in additional ways that the clusters could not. The single biggest difference between a deanery and a cluster is the dean. A dean is a priest from the local area, appointed by the bishop, to serve as the bishop’s representative in that local area, to be called a deanery. The dean will also meet directly with the Bishop, both individually and as a group, to share information on the local levels with the Bishop and to assist him in serving the parishes more effectively. Two of the area’s former pastors were also installed, Very Rev. Thomas G. Pettei, formerly of St. Raphael’s, now pastor of St. Nicholas of Tolentine. Pastor Pettei will be working with Immaculate Conception, Incarnation, Our Lady of the Cenacle, Presentation B.V.M., Our Lady of Lourdes, Queen of Peace, SS. Joachim and Anne, St. and Gerard Majella.
