Dr. Richard Riesen What Does Christian Have To Do With Education?

About Dr. Richard Riesen Dr. Riesen’s experience includes 15 years as head of school at Pacific Christian on the Hill, an inner-city Christian junior high and high school in Los Angeles, CA. For the past eight years, he has led In Christo Vera Educatio, a non-profit foundation that provides financial aid to lowincome families to help send their children to Christian secondary schools. Since 2007 he has also served as scholar-at-large for PAIDEIA, Inc., a consulting organization led by Dr. Bruce Lockerbie, which seeks the improvement of Christian schools and Christian education.

As an educator, Dr. Riesen has been an adjunct faculty member at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA, where he taught ecclesiastical history, as well as a teacher of English to medical doctors and medical school professors at Qingdao Medical College in Qingdao, China. Dr. Riesen is the author of six books and numerous articles. He holds a PhD in ecclesiastical history from the University of Edinburgh, an MA in European intellectual history from Claremont Graduate School, and a BA in history, with a minor in English, from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Lower School News Field Trip To Minute Maid Park & Reliant Stadium The fourth and fifth grade classes recently had the privilege of attending a math field trip to Minute Maid Park & Reliant Stadium.

While at Minute Maid Park, they learned about the size of the scoreboard, the number of seats in the stadium, how many diamond club seats there are, and how much each of those seats costs as well as the distance around the bases and the distance around the entire baseball field.

Dimensions were given to them in feet which they converted to yards, and some distances were given to them in yards which they converted to feet.

In addition, the students learned how a baseball and a baseball bat is made. An

opportunity to sit in the Astros’ dugout gave them a glimpse of what it must be like to be a member of the team. The students were even allowed to sit in the press box!

At Reliant Stadium our students learned the size of the scoreboard, how many seats are available, and how many different sports/events can be hosted by Reliant. They also toured the visitor's locker room. They even got to peek into the cafeteria where some Texans football players were having lunch! They had a bird’s eye view of the practice field and enjoyed watching the Texans prepare for their next football game.

Upper School News Interact In Action!

On October 5, 2013 members of the Interact Club volunteered at the MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Walk Like MADD event at Northshore Park. Students helped with setup, cleanup, and assisted in various booths. It was a fun event that had activities for all ages (there was even a dog booth!) and raised awareness for the very serious issue of drunk driving.

Warrior Pink-Out Day! October 22, 2013

Sponsored by the Interact Club To assist the local efforts of St. Luke’s Hospital, the Interact Club is sponsoring Warrior Pink-Out Day Tuesday, October 22.

On this day, all students in middle and high school who make a $5 donation will be allowed to wear pink!

Simply come to school dressed in your pinkest pink, your English teacher will note your name, and the $5 donation will be billed to your Woodlands Christian business office account. ** Important Note ** Students must be dressed modestly and appropriately. No pink hair.

The Interact Club will sell pink lemonade for $2 at the volleyball game on Tuesday, October 22 and at the football game on Friday, October 25.

All proceeds will benefit the St. Luke’s Cancer Awareness and Education Program.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Warrior Football Gears Up For District Play The Warriors spent their bye week preparing for the all important district portion of the season which begins Friday, October 11 when they host Rosehill Christian.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

The race for the district crown is on!

Come out and support your Warrior football team!

Warrior Volleyball Update With the district season in full swing, the Warriors were at home on October 3 for a match against Cypress Christian which resulted in a 0-3 loss. The team scored a 1-3 loss on the road in their match against St. Thomas Episcopal on October 8. The Warriors will look to rebound when they face Brazos Christian at home on Thursday, October 10. The JV team will get the action started at 5:00 p.m. The varsity game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.

Be sure to mark your calendar for Tuesday, October 22 when the Warrior spikers host Rosehill in the final home game of the regular season. In addition to senior night festivities, the team will sponsor a special Pink Out to increase awareness for breast cancer research. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match on October 22!

Warrior Cross Country Update Prior to the this week’s race at Katy Faith West, the team studied 2 Corinthians 12:9. We focused on letting go of our infirmities and focusing instead on what God can do. We talked about setting goal times and looked forward to how God would show up. We prayed expecting God to do something big and amazing... and He did!

The high school girls set many of their best times of the season and personal best records (see photo at left). Hannah Shearer, Alyssa Regier and Katy Adams medalled, and the team finished in fourth place overall out of 16 schools. The varsity boys also set season best times and personal records with Logan Shearer and Sam Mueck medalling.

For the middle school girls, out of 71 runners, Madelyn Rasberry earned a medal for her 14th place overall finish. The middle school boys

were dominant with five runners finishing in the top 20 spots (see photo below right). Out of 110 runners, Josh Ogelsby finished in third place, Cade Glover finished tenth, Ben Mueck came in eleventh, Josh Shearer seventeenth, and Grant George nineteenth. The boys’ team won second place out of 19 schools and were only seven points away from winning the meet!

This Saturday we race at St. Thomas Episcopal and will face most of our competition for the TAPPS state championships for high school and for the NHAL district competition for middle school.

We have been working incredibly hard and look forward to the amazing results again.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Warrior Swimming Season Begins The Warrior varsity swim team dove right in to their first meet of the season this weekend in Tomball. Two new school records were set by Hannah Bub in the 100m fly and Jake Copeland in the 100m breaststroke. Swimmers finishing in the top 20 included Hannah Bub (1st place 200 IM, 2nd place 100m Butterfly), Jake Copeland (11th place 100m breaststroke), Hailey Hanigan (5th place 200m freestyle, 6th place 100m backstroke). Top ten finishes went to the relay teams of Katie Albertson,

Hannah Bub, Jordan Hanigan and Hailey Hanigan (7th place 200 medley relay, 6th place 200m free relay). Swimmers setting personal best times were Cameron Coe (50m freestyle, 100m breaststroke) and Sarah Mansfield (50m freestyle).

Next up for the Warriors is the Fort Bend ISD Invitational in Sugar Land, November 15-16.

The PTF is hosting a ladies Bible study beginning Wednesday, October 16 at 8:45 a.m. in the library. The subject of the study is Gideon - Your Weakness, God’s Strength by Priscilla Shirer. The study will last approximately six weeks.
