Lower School News Spelling Bee 2013 The Lower School held its annual spelling bee on Thursday, November 14.

Lower School News History Comes To Life In First Grade

Mrs. Atler-Derr’s first grade students are learning about history in hands-on fashion by presenting projects dressed as an historical figure.

Kindergarten Shares God’s Love With a little help from their senior class buddies, kindergarten students shopped for and packed items for their Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. This project provides students with a tangible way to share God’s love with those around the world.

Fine Arts News Life Sized Art Before there were selfies on Facebook and Instagram, there were self-portraits.

Students in Mrs. Melinda Cohea’s and Mrs. Susan Peterson’s classes are discovering the art of the self-portrait. Mrs. Cohea’s middle school students drew life sized portraits while Mrs. Peterson’s students explored Cubism and modeled their portraits after the works of Pablo Picasso.

The portraits are now on display in the hallway of the Timothy Administration Building. Stop by and take a look at what our art students are up to!

Upper School News Interact Makes A Stand

The Woodlands Christian Academy Interact Club presented a check for $1,560 to Debra Staley, Marketing & Community Relations Manager of St. Luke’s Hospital in support of Make A (Pink Lemonade) Stand Against Breast Cancer.

Interact Club members organized pink lemonade stands during school sporting events and held a special pink-out dress day for all students in order to raise funds to support this local outreach sponsored by St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital.

Life Management Skills Is Cookin’ In conjunction with their classroom cooking lessons, students in Mrs. Diana Dew’s middle school life management skills class paid a visit to Crust Pizza and learned how a restaurant kitchen operates. They even got to make and eat their own personal pizzas!

Upper School News MacBook Pro Purchase Plan Announced After many years of leasing computers from Apple, Woodlands Christian is making the transition to having families of high school students (grades 9-12) purchase MacBook Pro laptop computers. Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, we are requiring families to purchase a new MacBook Pro from Woodlands Christian. The MacBooks will come with all software loaded and ready for the start of the new school year.

When enrollment contracts are issued in January, the contracts will offer the three options detailed below. With the exception of the lease option, the prices listed are estimates only. The prices reflect an initial basic educational discount. We expect an additional volume discount which will be determined at a later date. Please be assured that any decrease in price will be promptly refunded. In addition, the present technology fee of $600 is being reduced to $200 to cover our network and other related costs.

Important note - as the laptops will no longer be leased, families will be responsible for all necessary repairs as well as all software and operating system upgrades.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Warrior Football Advances To State Quarterfinals In a David and Goliath style showdown, the 6-4 Warriors took down 10-0 Marble Falls Faith Academy on Friday night with a resounding 42-26 victory.

The Warriors’ defense stood tall all night, limiting a Faith ground attack that had been averaging 328 yards per game to just 76 before the defensive starters took a seat in the fourth quarter. Five different players registered more than 20 points on the tackle chart (a school record), led by defensive end Matt Muschenheim.

The Warriors used a punishing rushing game of their own and a ruthlessly efficient passing game to gain and maintain the lead for the entire game.

Quarterback Michael Sacks rushed for three touchdowns and hit 5 of 6 passes for 138 yards and another touchdown.

Next up for Woodlands Christian is the Bryan Brazos Eagles, another 10-0 team. The game will be played on Friday, November 22, at 7:30 p.m. at Cub Stadium in Brenham. Should the Warriors win, they will most likely gain a state semifinal rematch with district rival Bay Area Christian.

Warrior Basketball The 2013-2014 Woodlands Christian basketball season has begun! The boys’ and girls’ varsity teams hosted Logos Preparatory Academy on Tuesday, November 19. Both teams started the season off well with wins! Final scores girls’ varsity 38-33; boys’ varsity 56-42.

The boys’ and girls’ varsity teams will be on the road against Covenant Christian on Thursday, November 2l, and will compete in the Logos Prep Thanksgiving Shoot Out, November 25-26.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Warrior Swimming The varsity swim team competed at the Houston Area 4A and Under Championship meet November 15-16 in Sugar Land, Texas. Despite the fact that twenty of the twenty-two teams in attendance were large public schools, our Warriors raced hard and each team member swam a personal or season best time! Preliminaries took place on Friday and the top sixteen swimmers in each event were able to return Saturday for finals. Both girls' relays (Jordan Hanigan, Hannah Bub, Hailey Hanigan and Katie

Albertson) swam their way into finals and finished 12th in the 200 yard freestyle relay and 13th in the 200 yard medley relay. Hannah Bub took 3rd place in the 100 yard breaststroke and 4th in the 200 yard freestyle. Hailey Hanigan added to team points with her 8th place finish in the 100 yard backstroke. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams showed great improvement and are looking forward to the Tomball Big Cat Invitational on December 7.

Warrior Golf The Warrior boys’ and girls’ varsity golf teams competed in their first event of the season this week at the St. Thomas Fall Invitational at Quail Valley Country Club and the results were amazing!

This is the first year for Woodlands Christian to have a girls golf team and in true Warrior fashion they took home first place honors! The team was led by Hailey Watterson who finished 3rd overall! We are looking forward to great things this year from Jessica Robinson, Sydney Vanderpool, Cassie Robinson, and Hailey Watterson.

On the boys’ side, the team was led by senior captain, James Ray, who finished in 2nd place overall. James was followed closely by Travis Ray who finished 4th - his first top five finish ever! After back to back district and regional championships, this team has set the bar high but James Ray, Travis Ray, Davis Galassini, Grant Galassini, Parker Powers, Christian Mardaga, Chase Silman, and Kyran Miseldine know what it takes. Great job Warrior golf!
