A C A D E M ACADEMY Y CHRISTIAN NOVEMBER 1, 2013
Head Of School Notes -- by Julie Ambler The Woodlands Christian Academy opened twenty years ago with 175 students from preschool through 6th grade. The young school rented space at Faith Bible Church and later expanded to a second location at Abundant Life (now The Crossing) when it added 7th and 8th grades. Hoping to purchase land to develop its own campus, the school’s leaders searched throughout The Woodlands for an affordable site. Unfortunately, large tracts of land were selling for millions of dollars. Proving that God can use anything for a blessing, Entergy discovered that a parcel of land which it owned was inhabited by the Pileated RedHeaded Wood Pecker, an endangered species, and could not be developed for commercial use. Hence, it offered and sold the 40-acre site, which is now our home, to The Woodlands Christian Academy for a mere $250,000. As we celebrate our twenty-year anniversary and our fifteenth year on this beautiful property, God continues to bless our school abundantly. Today, it is our privilege to equip and inspire 435 students to become leaders for Christ – spiritually, academically, physically and socially. Through the continued generosity of so many families, our campus facilities are improving and expanding to welcome more students. We are on schedule to complete our newest classroom building in the middle of December. The Joshua Academic Center, named for the Biblical hero who faithfully followed the call of God throughout his life and led the nation of Israel into their new homeland, includes 28,000 square feet and will accommodate our 1st through 8th grade students upon their return from Christmas vacation on January 8. Next week, we should receive the metal panels necessary to enclose our outdoor pavilion, creating an additional practice gym for lower school P.E. and middle school. The David Gymnasium, named for the faithful young boy who grew to become a mighty warrior and king of Israel, will also be completed by the middle of December. Depending on the success of our
annual fund campaign (which continues for eight more days!), we hope to add sport court flooring and air conditioning. After Christmas, we will begin reconfiguring our fine arts deck (currently the middle school deck) and our upper school administrative deck to better accommodate band, music, an additional art studio, other classrooms/offices, and a middle school locker room. Eventually, we will replace these portable decks with permanent classrooms and a fine arts building. We continue to expand our technology programs. Beginning next fall, rather than lease computers for our high school students, we will ask families to purchase a new MacBook Pro from Woodlands Christian at a reduced cost. The MacBooks will come with software loaded, and be ready for the start of the new school year. We have purchased and will reconfigure our older MacBooks to create additional carts-on-wheels and classroom computers for students from preschool through 8th grade. Look for more details with your re-enrollment package in January. It’s hard to believe, but the Business Office will mail re-enrollment packages for the 2014-2015 school year soon after the Christmas vacation. Contracts from existing families are due on February 6, 2014. After that date, enrollment will open for new students. At this time, we are receiving record-breaking inquiries for potential enrollment next fall. The Office of Admission has already received 36 completed applications, 23 applications in process, and 97 active inquiries (written or verbal expression of a sincere desire to pursue enrollment). Please share these deadlines with any interested family and friends as classes may fill very quickly. It is a pleasure to serve your family in an environment where we can acknowledge God’s many blessings. Thank you for your trust and partnership.
