Upper School News Sophomores Give The Gift Of Hearing -- by Pam Masau Within the public tourism realm of Fort Davis, Texas The Woodlands Christian Academy is known well. Joe Mussey and his wife Joyce work in collaboration with the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute (affectionately called CRDI) as mining exhibit tour guides. Joe, in his 80s, will proudly tell you three things when you meet him: he graduated with a degree in geology from the University of Texas at El Paso, he loves his wife Joyce and he was an on-site dynamite expert to maintain historical accuracy in Daniel Day Lewis’ 2007 movie There Will Be Blood.

Every year we visit CDRI to meet Joe and Joyce and listen to them talk about Texas minerals, mining, ores and dynamite.

This year Joe prefaced his presentation with the simple request that the kids keep an eye out for his hearing aid as we walk around. He recently lost it and there was gravel everywhere making its recovery nearly impossible.

After both our groups visited with him, we left CDRI on our way to other activities of the day. Jason Farra and the other chaperones began to talk about

his lost hearing aid and decided to take up a collection. The kids happily donated $10 each, their return travel lunch money, to help Mr. Mussey. Our bus driver, a godly woman named Sharon, also donated $20. We emailed the Mussey’s and asked them to stop by and meet us at our ranch one morning so we could present them with a gift. We had collected $350 for Mr. Mussey’s hearing aid.

Recently, I received this email from Mrs. Mussey: Hello, Pam, Joe and I hope you and your classes are doing well. Joe asked me to email you and say thanks again to you and your students. He now is back in business with “2 ears”.

We have told many about you and your sophomore class. Please pass our gratitude to your students and sponsors.

Thanks again for all you do, Joe and Joyce.

I am so proud to be part of a school community that shares the love of Christ with complete strangers!

Upper School News High School Students Welcome Special Guest Speaker History came to life for high school students as they welcomed Al Marks for a special presentation on Friday, April 11. In 1944, Mr. Marks and his parents were taken from Hungary to the Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz. While at Auschwitz, he watched as Dr. Josef Mengele sent his parents to the gas chambers. During the year he was a prisoner, Mr. Marks lived in four different concentration camps. He and the other captives were freed by the U.S. Army Third Cavalry at the end of World War II in 1945. Mr. Marks moved to the United States where he served in the U.S. Army for a time before finding a home here in Houston.

He is now retired, and he and his wife still reside in Houston.

National Honor Society Visits State Capitol

Members of the Woodlands Christian chapter of the National Honor Society recently visited Austin to tour the state capitol building and the University of Texas. The highlight of the trip was receiving special access to the floor of the House of Representatives and having a question and answer session with a member of Representative Steve Toth’s staff.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Warrior Boys’ Golf Team Wins Third Regional Championship The boys’ and girls’ golf teams competed in the TAPPS 3A South Regional Tournament on Monday, April 14 resulting in both teams qualifying for the state championship tournament.

Despite the cold and windy day, the boys’ team made it three in a row by taking home another 1st place regional trophy. The Warrior boys came out ahead of the nearest team by almost 40 shots! The team was led by James Ray who finished tied for 2nd overall.

Congratulations to James Ray, Davis Galassini, Travis Ray, Grant Galassini, and Christian Mardaga.

Our girls’ teams finished in fourth place led by Haven Albeiz who finished in 10th place overall.

Congratulations to Haven, Hailey Watterson, Jessica Robinson, Cassie Robinson, and Sydney Vanderpool.

Both teams will travel to Killeen on April 28th and 29th for the TAPPS State Championship Tournament.

Warrior Tennis Qualifies For State Tournament

The Warrior tennis team competed in district matches at the the Lee Le Claire Tennis Facility in Houston on Tuesday, April 15. The girls’ doubles team of Jessica Robinson (junior) and Cassie Robinson (freshman) advanced to the semi-final round of the TAPPS 3A state tournament to be held in Waco on April 23. The duo brought home 3rd place medals in district competition.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Warrior Track & Field Update Our meet on Thursday at the Northland Christian Cougar Invitational was meant simply as a warm-up for the TAPPS district meet next week as we were competing against mostly 4A and 5A schools. However, we achieved results above and beyond our expectations with the girls’ team tying for 1st place overall and the boys finishing in 6th place!

Here are the highlights: • The boys’ 4x400 relay (Logan Shearer, Wyatt Wheeler, Andrew Parker and Kyle Clark) set a new school record by an incredible 3.02 seconds • The girls’ 4x400 relay (Riley Farra, Abby Caron, Alyssa Regier and Rachel Earle) ran the third fastest time in school history • Hailey Hanigan had a personal best in the 3200 by 14 seconds! Alex Yanochik (3 sec) and Sam Mueck (6 sec) set personal records in the same race • Darcy Sanford and Emily Rogers set personal records in the 100m hurdles

• Emily Rogers had a personal best in the shot put • Alex Harkins and Hailey Watterson set personal records in the discus • Jake Copeland marked a personal best in the high jump • Logan Shearer confirmed his sub-2:00 time in the 800 and Kyle Clark also set a personal best in the same race.

• Marielle Olivier, Ryan Doner and Elijah Bajoyo set personal records in the 200m • Alexandra Harkins, Whitney Rutherford, Jake Adams and Jacob Ellis recorded personal best times in the 100m Up next: The TAPPS district four meet on April 22 and April 24 at Rosehill Christian. Come cheer us on!

Warrior Baseball & Softball In addition to feasting on barbeque, Warrior fans took in some great baseball and softball action on Friday, April 11. (See photos below.)

The Warrior softball team got the evening started (and almost finished!) with a marathon game against Brazos Christian. Despite their best efforts, the Warriors ended up on the losing end of the 22-32 score. On Tuesday, the team hosted Cypress Christian and came away with 2-9 loss. Warrior softball will host St. Joseph Catholic High School in a double-header on Thursday, April 17. The first

game is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by the second game at 12:30 p.m.

The Warrior baseball team closed out the evening with a district game against Brazos Christian which resulted in a 5-7 loss. The team travelled to Rosehill Christian on Tuesday, April 15 and came away with a 5-18 loss. They will play a special Thursday morning and afternoon double header against St. Joseph Catholic High School on April 17. The games are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. respectively.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS Booster Club Bar-B-Que Bash On Friday, April 11 Warrior fans of all ages were treated to a delicious barbeque dinner courtesy of the Booster Club. In addition, fans participated in tasting homemade desserts and then voting for the most delicious entry in the Interact Club’s Bake-Off competition. In between bites, the crowd enjoyed the softball and baseball games, and a special performance by the Warrior junior cheer squad.

Special thanks to our smokin’ chefs, Steve Cochran, Randy Hollas, Scott Young and Sean Young for their outstanding bar-b-que brisket, chicken and sausage, and to David Brignac for cooking up some mouth-watering Cajun beans.
