Ashdown had a special visit last week from ‘Shake, Rattle and Boogie’ in celebration of World Book Week! The children participated in dancing and singing with lots of exciting props and instruments! Each class had a focus on a particular story, alongside their classroom topics.

As part of their topic, ‘People who help us', Pre-School had a very exciting visit from West Yorkshire Police this afternoon. They learnt all about the important role of the emergency services; tried on the police uniform and even used some of their equipment!

As part of Science Week, Ashdown had some unusual visitors brought in by Lion Learners! The children were very brave taking it in turns to hold each animal! They met a rabbit called Bella, a snake called Timmy, a tarantula called Spinderella, a tortoise called Jack and a lizard called Claude. Even Mrs Small conquered her fears and held the snake!

Under the watchful eye of the catering team, Reception made their own pizzas today, before they were cooked, ready for lunch - delicious!

Continuing with the Science theme this week, Year 1 had a very special visitor yesterday: Mrs Ainscoe, now retired, was the Head of Science from Woodhouse Grove and she visited Year 1 with some special rocks for the children to investigate. They learnt that her daughter, Eleanor, is a geologist and works in Singapore researching earthquakes using satellite imaging.

The theme for British Science Week this year was TIME! Year 1 were set some activities that they had to complete within 1 minute. These included - how many cubes can you fit together? How many times can you write your name? They found out that sitting for 1 minute without doing anything felt like a long time but when doing a fun activity, the time went very quickly.

As part of science week Year 2 took part in a ScienceLIVE! Session along with other schools from all across the country. In this interactive lesson they learnt about farming, baby animals and how crops are grown. They enjoyed seeing their answers compared with other schools, and of course seeing the 2 new born lambs!

In their Earth Art lesson Year 2 decorated their pet rocks to look like their chosen animals. The results were fantastic and everyone did a great job!

Year 3 enjoyed their Science Week Workshop with Dr Khan this week. They had the opportunity to explore and use a range of medical equipment, used by GPs, to check different parts of our bodies. They investigated what happens to our heart rate when we exercised and had a closer look at our mouths and eyes. It was interesting to see the effect that smoking has on our bodies. We think we have some doctors in the making!

Year 4 had a fantastic day at the Royal Armouries on Friday! They had a morning of strict Spartan warrior training, followed by an interactive story telling of Perseus and Medusa. The afternoon was spent exploring the museum, looking at the vast collections of arms and armour and finding the answers to the museum's trail quiz.

Last week, Year 5 visited Saltaire as part of their humanities studies. The children explored the mill, village and park, finding out how and why they had been created by Sir Titus Salt. They were also given an insight into some of the folk who lived there in the 19th century and the grand feat of Victorian engineering that went into building the Leeds

Meanwhile, back in PSHEE lessons Year 5 have been learning how to deal calmly with emergency situations - learning how to put unconscious, breathing casualties into the recovery position and how to call for assistance.

Year 6 children have enjoyed a super afternoon at Headingley Stadium, supporting Leeds Rhinos in their 18 10 victory over Catalans Dragons

Science Week begun at Bronte House, with Year 6 being the first to experience the VR headsets! The children were taken through various different landscapes and habitats such as the jungle and the desert. They also got to meet some wildlife including lions and dolphins!

On Wednesday afternoon, as part of their Science Week activities, Year 6 took part in a Time themed lesson at the Grove. After listening to the input from Mr Norris, they completed a variety of activities in response to the question - Can you react quicker than a tiger? It is fair to say that we apparently have some very speedy response times in Year 6!

As part of their ongoing Science Week activities, Year 6 met with Jacqueline Breeze this afternoon, a genetic counsellor. This was the perfect Introduction to our 'Inheritance and Evolution’ topic

...topic. We learned all about DNA and genetics in healthcare. It was fascinating to see how DNA can be extracted from strawberries. The children were absolutely fascinated and were keen to ask a multitude of pertinent questions.

Our latest young trainee Knitwits learning how to French knit using knitting Nancy's to introduce them to the wonders of yarn. Some are making bracelets and even coasters with theirs.

Last week was the annual Leeds’ Cross Country event. Despite the awful weather, our runners put in another splendid performance, securing 2nd, 4th and 6th place in Under 11 boys and 2nd place Under 11 girls. A true test of grit and resilience in some very challenging conditions; well done to everyone.

Delicious thumb print buns for our bakers this week!

We hope everyone is looking forward to ABA’s upcoming 90th Birthday Ball
