Knowing the sense of purpose at WIS, there is confidence the school will continue to set itself ambitious goals.

Message from Jen Precce

The 2022 academic year at Woodford International School was one of unprecedented challenges! In fact, the academic year was challenging for our entire nation of the Solomon Islands. Challenges require those experiencing them to face them head on, make a solid plan to overcome and to push forward. It is with immense gratitude and pride that I sit here today and reflect on what an outstanding job our Woodford community has done in supporting each other amidst these challenging times. I truly believe we are not only wiser but also stronger for them. Let me congratulate you all for your commitment to our united objective, the continued success and advancement of our school.

The board this year had many important decisions to make. It became clear from the beginning that we wanted to strengthen our board policies and began immediately working on improving them. However, as a board we are aware that a policy is only as

good as its implementation, so we not only discussed at length the improving of these policies but also made sure we were executing them. At last year’s AGM, it was made clear of the need for our new strategic plan to be completed. I am very pleased to be able to confirm this has been achieved. I would like to give a special thanks to all the community members, board members, teaching staff and to Daniel our Head of School, for all your hard work and the many hours you all spent on making our strategic plan a reality.

Of course, I can’t write a board report without mentioning the much-anticipated arrival of Daniel Corrigan, our Head of School. It felt like a long 6 months awaiting the opening of our country's borders to allow for Daniel to take up his role in person. And as many of our community members are aware, moving across the world to a very different culture is not an easy task. Daniel arrived full of energy and has not faltered in his enthusiasm and contagious optimism regarding the future of our school. It has been a pleasure to work alongside Daniel this year and I look forward to many more years of his leadership at Woodford.

Finally, I would like to thank all the Board members for their dedication over the last year. Within the school board we have many subcommittees and seeing you all willingly participate in not only our board meetings, but all the extra meetings and conversations have been very inspiring. Battling lockdowns, crazy weather and that ridiculous road has not diminished your contributions and it has not gone unnoticed, so thank you all.

Financial

Report

The financial turnout was significantly better than expected, despite 2022 beginning with restrictions from Covid and a large number of foreigners leaving the country.

Message from Ron Prasad

The COVID-19 pandemic has obviously brought enormous challenges and hardships to our community over the course of 2022, especially just following the riots as we closed out 2021. WIS's Board of Directors revised the school’s budget and adjusted operating plans during this difficult period. They did this to support the community while retaining our dedicated staff and ensuring the school’s readiness to offer in-person learning when possible. WIS's sound financial position and appropriate financial management practices were independently confirmed by Morris and Sojnocki Accountants for the most recent school year audit (2022). Ron Prasad | Treasurer

The school returned a surplus of $404,592 SBD for the 12 months ending 31 December 2022

This has been a good achievement considering it was the year in which Covid prevailed in the Solomon Islands and physical closure of the school for some five months.

Message from Stella Tuhaika

What a year it has been! Despite Covid in 2022, with thanks to all of you, parents, PTFA successfully supported various projects for the school.

PTFA’s biggest project support and the greatest achievement in 2022 was the financing of the ICT purchases from Australia (SBD280, 269.96) and shipping (SBD59,647.04). The ICT purchases included 40 new laptops, 35 50” TV screens and stands, 40 Chromebooks and 5 kindles.

We now have laptops for all teachers, TVs in each classroom for projection purposes, shared Chromebooks in primary classes and the library and laptops in our primary ICT lab.

The ICT purchases enabled teachers to cast their presentations on the TV screen and achieve mobility throughout the school compound to ensure continuous learning for their students.

Challenges:

2022 was a challenging year for everyone, especially when Covid reached our shores! We had to adjust to keep the learning and teaching online despite the challenges. PTFA was only fully functional in June 2022 after the recovery from Covid. We had to reduce many of our usual events and concentrate on a few key projects and events only.

Way Forward:

PTFA will continue to ensure that parent's voices are heard, but especially to work together with the school to improve the learning environment for students, ensuring that the learning environment is as conducive and to a higher standard as possible.

Tagio Tumas! It has been a very busy but successful 2022 and I would like to thank PTFA and everyone who has offered their support to make the events happen. Let’s look forward to 2023 being even better for our children and the School.

2022 Highlights

A year that began with so much uncertainty and challenge posed by the riots and Covid, but ended with resilience and hope!

Message from Daniel Corrigan

What a pleasure it has been to join the welcoming and vibrant Woodford community just nine months ago. Although the first half of the 2022 academic year saw numerous challenges with online learning and the uncertainty from the weight of the pandemic, the memory of those challenges feeling so long ago is a testament to how far we have come.

As Covid graced our shores just following the civil unrest, closure of schools across the country left the start of 2022 with feelings of despair and uncertainty that was felt throughout the surrounding community. However, what was more palpable, especially for me as a newcomer to the Solomons the second half of 2022, was the resiliency of our community to push through the struggle and ambiguity; an enduring hope.

When schools reopened, our enrolments immediately increased with a return to a lively campus that worked hard to obtain more than just normalcy, but rather a heightened desire to improve beyond what we once were.

We actively spent the second half of 2022 improving our technology infrastructure to encompass a full WiFi campus, televisions in every meeting room and classroom, new laptops for all staff, a new website, and streamlined communication and social media processes.

We worked tirelessly toward new procedures around our emergency protocols and child protection, as well as formulated our new fiveyear strategic plan after months of collating information from all stakeholders. Various maintenance projects were successfully completed and a formation of international schools in the South Pacific was formed to share resources toward professional development opportunities in the region.

Thank you to all our staff, parents, students, PTFA, school board members, and friends who actively support the WIS mission. Every gift of time and resource makes a tremendous impact on the future of Woodford International School and the lives of our students. Please take some time to read about the impact you have already made by supporting our mission, and we look forward to the year ahead!
