WELCOME We’ll get the chance to talk architecture with Malcolm Fraser, build utopian cities with Ishbel McFarlane in Plan, listen to the sounds of the landscape with Maja Zeco and see the Barn transformed into a Soil Lab under the guiding hand of artist John Newling.

The national stage comes to Banchory via our live screenings, featuring Royal Shakespeare Company’s powerful productions of King Lear and The Tempest, and Kenneth Branagh taking centre stage in the Branagh Theatre Company’s presentation of The Entertainer.

If festivals are your thing, DanceLive launches at the Barn with An Invitation by Jo Fong and our eagerly awaited children’s festival MiniFest returns with nationally acclaimed work by Funded By

Culture Mongrel Dance Theatre, Frozen Charlotte and Secondhand Dance. We partner up again with soundfestival to bring you the best international new music, hosting Canada’s dynamic Bozzini Quartet and the UK’s own Ligeti Quartet as part of this year’s festival programme.

In fact, music lovers are spoilt for choice this season, from the fresh sounds of X Factor’s Lucy Spraggan through to traditional music favourites Clype, Kris Drever, Fred Morrison and the festive sounds of award-winning folk singer Emily Smith.

Lucy Spraggan appeared on the X Factor in 2012, and immediately signed to Columbia Records.

Lucy has made appearances in some of the most prestigious music venues in the UK and has also packed out tents at some of the UK’s top festivals including T in the Park and V Fest.

Fans can expect some exciting new music alongside all the favourites that have filled her previous two albums.

King Lear has ruled for many years. As age begins to overtake him, he decides to divide his kingdom amongst his children, living out his days without the burden of power. Misjudging his children’s loyalty and finding himself alone in the wilderness, he is left to confront the mistakes of a life that has brought him to this point.

Antony Sher returns to the RSC to play King Lear, one of the greatest parts written by Shakespeare in this, one of Shakespeare’s most epic and powerful plays.

Kris Drever’s new studio album If Wishes Were Horses is a collection of semi-biographical songs covering the universal, and not so universal, themes of education, politics, sex, love, ennui, self-employment, social migration and Shetland. Drever’s recent outpouring of songs stems from a move back to the Northern Isles, Shetland this time rather than his native Orkney and the discovery of new lyrical voices to describe his life, times and wild new surroundings.

It never occurred to me I needed to meet my mum to ‘find out who I was’, as it didn’t seem likely I’d discover I was someone different to who I thought I was. Simon Russell Beale returns to the RSC after 20 years to play Prospero in this groundbreaking production directed by Artistic Director Gregory Doran.

MAJA ZECO GRAINS OF SOUND - NEGOTIATING IDENTITIES

Tuesday 25 October - Thursday 10 November

Grains of Sound is an art project exploring Banchory through sound walks. The exhibition will display a range of ambient recordings, excerpts from interviews, along with visual materials including photographs, maps, drawings, and sections of artist Maja Zeco’s research diary. The issue of displacement will be further tackled through soil samples taken in Banchory, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

SOIL LAB

Monday 28 November - Saturday 3 December The Soil Lab is part of John Newling’s research into the connections between people and soil. During November he will be conducting experiments on soils he has dug from around Woodend Barn.

Newling will collect samples of soil in a geometric configuration around the site, some being sent for analysis and the remainder incorporated into small works.

Inside the Lab you can observe him conducting experiments and mapping the soils from the local area. Come along and see the Lab growing day by day.

STREET DANCE

Join professional dancer and choreographer Oksana Kupets for this high-energy introduction to Street Dance. Learn the basics of Hip Hop, Locking and Waacking and combine the moves into a short routine. No previous dance skills required.

Ages 2-5 Join outdoor expert Mandy Tulloch in our Wild Garden for some bonfire fun especially for young children. Gather sticks to help build a fire and warm up with a hot drink and toasted marshmallows. Please dress warm in wellies and waterproofs. £5 per child Must be accompanied by an adult

Try your hand at pottery with artist Hilary Duncan and make an animal, bird or figure from clay. Your work will be glazed and fired for you to collect a couple of weeks later.

Go Compose! is a 3 day composition course for young composers aged 14-19, and part of soundfestival.

To celebrate the festive season we are offering a special series of workshops to learn a new craft and create handmade decorations for your home, perfect in time for Christmas. Refreshments provided but please bring lunch.

The Barn is based in refurbished farm buildings, between Crathes Castle and the beautiful Deeside town of Banchory, just 30 minutes from Aberdeen.

CONCESSIONS Concession means anyone who is claiming benefit or unemployed, in full-time education, senior citizens and disabled (free entry for carer).

SEATING Please note that seating is unreserved. To ensure you get your preferred seat, or if you are coming as a large party who wish to be seated together, please arrive in good time. Doors open half an hour before performances are advertised to start.

We are happy to reserve seats for disabled visitors and carers.

WORKSHOPS The Barn reserves the right to cancel workshops that are under subscribed. To ensure your place on our workshop programme please book in advance. Block booking registration ends one week prior to the sessions starting.

In the event of a cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances relating to the venue or artists/ performers, all sales will be refunded including the booking fee.

FOOD AND DRINK Buchanan Food serve food and drink before each performance, and during intervals. The Bistro is open 7 days a week, but closes early on Monday evenings.

Saturday 28 January | 7pm Join us as we continue the national Burn’s celebrations with Barn favourites Hehir, Jones and MacCallum as they provide an evening of lively traditional music and entertainment to set your feet tapping and to get you onto the dance floor.
