CELEBRATING

25 YEARS Welcome to our very special 25-year anniversary season! In this special year we will be shining a spotlight on our creative origins - our links to Crathes Castle, our local creative community, our environmental focus and our commitment to exploring our place in the wider world in partnership with the finest professional artists, performers and makers.

The Barn has come such a long way since the rehearsals of the Tensions & Trust community play in 1992 and Woodend Arts Association’s launch in 1994, to develop into Aberdeenshire’s premier multi-arts venue. On behalf of the whole team I’d like to extend our thanks and appreciation for each of the amazing, individual contributions that have made the Barn the vibrant place it is today.

As our journey continues, I’d also like to invite each of you to become part of our new community of Barn supporters by contributing to our 25th Anniversary fundraising campaign - whether you are someone who enjoys coming to our creative events with your friends and family, or a local business who recognises the contribution the Barn makes to the well-being of our community. Every one of you can make a real difference to our sustainability, and with your help, we can ensure another 25 years of the Barn delivering the best arts experiences for all. Donations can be made on-site at the venue or via our website.

LIFE CLASS WITH CATRIONA PLATTEN

Join us for an in-depth look at figure and portraiture with artist Catriona Platten. Using simple exercises, you will explore different ways to represent the human form in drawing, including structure and proportion of the body, plus features, tone, colour, pose and expression.

Working from a nude model, you will get the opportunity to try out a variety of approaches and techniques to create a range of life drawings. This class is suitable for all levels. £110 £105 Friends of the Barn

Scottish Dance Theatre’s team will lead this pre-show practical workshop, designed to give participants an insight into the concepts of the performance and develop everyone’s engagement in Looping.

SCOTTISH DANCE THEATRE LOOPING: SCOTLAND OVERDUB

To celebrate 25 years of the Barn, we have invited Scottish Dance Theatre to host an immersive ceilidh experience, inspired by street festivals and carnivals. Looping: Scotland Overdub connects the cultures and heritages of Brazil and Scotland in a political dance party with occasional loud music, flashing lights and freedom to move and enjoy the space.

Looping: Scotland Overdub is an intergenerational performance that captures the collective spirit of ceilidh dancing and street festival vibes and is one experience not to be missed.

NICOLA CHAMBURY: HOLDING GROUND

Crathes-based painter and printmaker Nicola Chambury’s works respond to landscape, place and experience, negotiating the tensions inherent in these ideas. Sometimes Chambury presents exquisitely detailed mono-coloured observations of flora and fauna, sometimes abstract, vibrant recordings of nature’s recovery after devastation. This Autumn, she takes over the Barn’s exhibition galleries with new work that traces a path between space and place - echoing the way we constantly meander backwards and forwards through our landscape as well as the perceptions and expectations associated with these positions.

2019 marks 50 years since the death of film icon Judy Garland and the Barn has created a special film season to celebrate the life and work of the ‘World’s Greatest Entertainer’. I Could Go on Singing was Garland’s final film, and one that is often said to mirror her own life.

Rose-Lynn Harlan, played by BAFTA Rising Star nominee Jessie Buckley (Beast), is bursting with raw talent, charisma and cheek.

Fresh out of jail and with two young kids, all she wants is to get out of Glasgow and make it as a country singer in Nashville.

Join jeweller and silversmith Megan Falconer to learn how to make your own silver bangle to wear home the same day. You will be introduced to traditional jewellery making techniques such as piercing, soldering, texturing and polishing before moving on to make your own creation. TRAVELLING GALLERY ALEC FINLAY, DAY OF ACCESS

The Barn welcomes Scotland’s Travelling Gallery, a mobile exhibition space, featuring Scottish Artist and Poet Alec Finlay’s exhibition, Day of Access. The theme and focus of the exhibition is disabled access to nature with Finlay’s work exploring the effects disability has on personal mobility and access to our wild environments, and features Alec’s drawings, sculpture and poems and a selection of work from invited artists and poets, including Ken Cockburn and Hannah Devereux.

Day of Access will tour to the Fife Arms in Braemar Friday 20 and Saturday 21 September.

IN CONVERSATION; LITERARY CONNECTIONS THROUGH VISUAL PRACTICE JOHN NEWLING AND NICOLA CHAMBURY

Artists respond to other artists. When making work leading visual artist John Newling has created work in response to, and with, T.S Elliot’s The Wasteland, whilst for artist Nicola Chambury writer George Elliot is a constant presence. The title of Nicola’s current exhibition ‘Holding Ground’ is a reference to how George Elliot articulated her ideas. Join us as we explore two literary figures and the artists inspired by them. £3

LANDSCAPE MAKING JEWELLERY

Join designer -maker Naomi Mcintosh and walking guide Katy Fennema in this special workshop to create your own unique piece of wooden jewellery. The session begins with a walk in Crathes Castle gardens, taking inspiration from nature, then returning to the Barn, you will use your gathered elements, paint and materials to design and create a personal neckpiece to take home.

Manran are one of the the best-known and best loved Scottish folk bands on the scene today.

Variously tagged as Folk-rock, Trad-rock and Celtic-rock the band create genre-defying music based on the eclectic mix of influences and the alchemy that melds them as a group. DRAWING TECHNIQUES WITH SUSIE HUNT

Drawing is described as any kind of work on paper regardless of technique. We draw from observation and from imagination as a means of creative experimentation. It can be the first visualisation of an idea, grand design or small notation. There are many techniques and materials that we can use to express ourselves through drawing. In this unique workshop, artist and NEOS founder Susie Hunt will teach you formal and representational techniques, to the expressive and experimental. The year is 1613, and Shakespeare is acknowledged as the greatest writer of the age. But disaster strikes when his renowned Globe Theatre burns to the ground. Haunted by the death of his only son Hamnet, he struggles to mend the broken relationship with his wife and daughters. In so doing, he is forced to examine his own feelings.

The Big Draw Festival is an annual celebration of the power of drawing where hundreds of organisations and schools take part from around the world. Come and contribute to the life size collaborative works that will cover the Barn floor, drawn by school children earlier in the day.

WOVEN WALL ART WITH ARRA TEXTILES

Alan is a fascinating expert in the art of forest gardening and grows more than one hundred species of edible plants on his allotment in Powis, Aberdeen. He will give an illustrated talk about how he forages his plot throughout the year for highly nutritious plants that many would describe as weeds.

Join Lucy MacDonald in this weaving workshop using yarn inspired by the shades of autumn.

You will learn a little theory on weaving techniques and structures, design a weft based colour pattern, then work on a presetup table loom to bring your bespoke Woven Wall Art design to life! Towards the end of the workshop you will have a chance to sew up your handwoven fabric and take it home.

No experience necessary, all materials and equipment supplied.

This talk is organised by the Friends of the Barn and open to all.

Jo Hayden and Harry Palmer, a successful vaudeville double act on the brink of realising their dream of performing at the Palace Theatre on Broadway, see their plans thrown into jeopardy when America gears

up for entrance into WWI and Harry receives an enlistment notice. Hoping to delay his enlistment long enough in order to go on with their performance, Harry intentionally injures himself - but his scheme drives Jo away and leaves Harry regretting his rash decision.

Featuring award-winning vocalist Ali Affleck, the all-female traditional jazz supergroup Red Hot Rhythm Makers play fun, accessible New Orleans and Mississippi jazz and blues. MASTERCLASS: CREATIVE BOOKBINDING WITH SUSAN CASSIE

The book itself and its scope for personal exploration leaves the individual free to express through the written journal or as a sketchbook. Start from the source of the blank page by learning the craft of bookbinding, with an explanation of various bindings, tools and materials. Students will go on to explore three basic book structures using recycled materials, including a single signature pamphlet stitch, followed by accordion and folded book structures, closing the session with a buttonhole stitch book. All materials will be provided but students are welcome to bring their own 2D materials to personalise their books.

Musicians from Scotland’s contemporary music ensemble, Red Note, perform new music by young composers participating in Go Compose!, a 3-day composition course for 14-19 year olds hosted by sound at the Barn. £5

Join artist Nicola Chambury and Feldenkrais practitioner Paolo Maccagno in a unique workshop exploring the relationships between landscape, printmaking, walking and awareness of our own bodies. The session will start by taking prints of our bodies, followed by a short walk to the River Dee. On our return to the Barn, Paolo will lead an hour long Feldenkrais session. We will conclude by taking a second body print and discussing any difference between the two prints and any discoveries we have made during the course of the workshop. £50 £45 Friends of the Barn

CIRCUS SKILLS SCHOOL

Step right up and join Modo – the Circus with purpose, as they show you ball juggling, plate spinning, tight wire walking and hula hooping to learn all the skills needed to run away with the circus. Modo is a social enterprise that uses high quality engagement in circus, street theatre and arts as a catalyst for individual and community change.

Struggling circus owner Max Medici enlists a former star and his two children to care for Dumbo, a baby elephant born with oversized ears. When the family discovers that the animal can fly, it soon becomes the main attraction bringing in huge audiences and revitalizing the run-down circus. The elephant’s magical ability also draws the attention of V.A. Vandevere, an entrepreneur who wants to showcase Dumbo in his latest, larger-than-life entertainment venture. Starring Colin Farrell and Danny de Vito.

Updating and embellishing garments are a great way to add something unique to your wardrobe. With the help of textile designer Mhairi Allan from Paper Houses Design, participants will learn the basics of embroidery to breathe new life to a once-loved piece of clothing. This modern take on a traditional technique will give you the basic skills to keep wardrobes renewed in an ethical way.

LEONARDO: THE WORKS

Leonardo da Vinci’s peerless art will be the focus of Leonardo: The Works, exploring every single attributed painting in Ultra HD quality, never seen before on the big screen. This film looks afresh at Leonardo’s life - his inventiveness, his military foresight and his ability to navigate the treacherous politics of the day - through the prism of his art. WMS/SOUND FESTIVAL PRESENT: THE KAPTEN TRIO

Join Louise Forbes to learn how to design and carve your very own wooden spoon. Starting with designing the shape onto a piece of wood, carving the bowl and drawing the handle. Louise will then roughly cut the spoon out on a bandsaw ready for you to shape.

You will learn how to do rasping, filing and sanding to make your spoon perfectly smooth and leave with your very own hand carved wooden spoon, and the skills and confidence to take the activity forward. All materials, tools and a light lunch provided.

Known for their energetic, passionate and exciting performances, the Kapten Trio have a reputation as one of the top young piano trios in the country. REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS We do not offer refunds unless the event is a sell-out and we are able to re-sell your tickets to someone on the waiting list. If we manage to re-sell your tickets, you will be refunded the cost of the tickets, minus the booking fee. We are not able to accept returned tickets for performances on the door.

In the event of a cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances relating to the venue or artists/ performers, all sales will be refunded including the booking fee.
