HOW TO

Re-Integrate Socially

AFTER COVID -19 BY ASHLEY CARTER YOUNGBLOOD LMSW, LMFT, CMHIMP

Where to Start

This past year has been beyond difficult for us all. We have laughed, cried, felt like we are living in a Hollywood movie, and worked to adjust to constant uncertainty and changing expectations. Even with various restrictions being removed related to social distancing and isolation mandates, many of us may still not know how we feel about social interactions, masking up, or what feels “safe.” While restrictions and recommendations can help guide behavior, when they are removed or changed, it is not as if we can emotionally simply leave the past in the past and be magically fine with a new set of expectations and standards. Therefore, as our society continues to shift and define a new normal, keep in mind that there will be stages to take as one re-integrates back into life.

Listen to Yourself

Lesson one in self-care is always “listen to what you need.” The challenge with COVID-19 as a social experience is that much of the time; people do not know how they feel about it all. It is hard to find the line between respectful caution and pure unhelpful fear. Constant messages of panic and warning from news sources also do not help us to regulate our extreme emotions on the topic. Therefore, the first step to re-integration is: before attending an event, getting a vaccine, or making travel plans listen to what feels right to you or what feels like too much.

6

August 2021

Allow for Shifts

As is reflective of the constant shifting during the pandemic, how we feel and what feels safe and important will likely shift. This is okay, too. Allow yourself to feel good about something one day and hesitant on the next. You are a different person with a different set of needs each day. All you can do to honor yourself during this crazy time is to listen to your needs, even (and perhaps especially!) when they shift.

Give Yourself Time

Life will probably not feel completely “normal” for a while. So, as you listen and allow for changes in your needs, emotions, and expectations, remember to be patient with yourself. It will take time to unwind the complexities of COVID-19 as an illness, just like it will take you time to sort out over time how exactly you feel about it all and what feels appropriate in response.

Create Dialogue

One of the most challenging parts of the COVID-19 experience for people is that it has been polarizing, whether politically, related to vaccination expectations, or even what is believed to constitute “appropriate” and “respectful” behavior. So, how you feel and respond to changes in restrictions and standards related to COVID-19 are likely not going to be the same as your co-workers, father, or friends. Therefore, if there is

something that makes you uncomfortable (e.g. returning to working in-person at your office, colleagues being unmasked), create dialogue! In a respectful, calm, and collaborative way, share with those you trust what is difficult for you about a certain situation and see if there is a compromise that can be made to adjust as best as possible to the changing needs, emotions, and expectations of this time.

Get Support

Even if people differ from you in how you feel about this re-integration, remember that you matter. If you are struggling with the anxiety that has, frankly, become commonplace during this pandemic, get the support you need. Find like-minded friends who can support you socially in the way that feels right to you. Perhaps consider being honest with yourself and talking with your doctor or finding a therapist if the stress of it all has become so much that professional help would be beneficial. Above all, know that you are not alone in having difficulty adjusting and reintegrating! We have all been in this together and we can all do this together! Gemstone Doug Mitchell

Cuts

Diamond Doug is Owner/Artist at UniQ Jewelry Gallery. More info: uniqjewelry.com.

s an admitted, committed, colored-stone junkie, it’s no secret that gemstones of all shapes and sizes truly amaze me. Aside from the colors and origins of gems, what truly takes them to the next level is their cut; and my oh my there are a LOT! While some cut-names describe the cut of the gem face-up, other names refer to the bottom of the gem known as the faceting style. This month, let’s dive into different cut styles & faceting styles that make the gems we adore so incredible! We truly could write a book on all the different cuts and styles, but here are some of our favorites. Examples shown are Diamond Doug originals from current inventory & portfolio.

Round & Oval Cut

Round-cut stones are the most used cut as they are a staple in the industry and always a flattering cut no matter the type of gemstone. The most popular faceting used in round-cut and oval-cut stones is Brilliant faceting. This style was introduced by Venetian gem-cutter Vicenti Peruzzi at the end of the 17th century. Prior to this, gemstones were cut very deep and didn’t allow much light to pass through and reflect backup to the wearer. With the brilliant cut, light enters the stone, reflects off the different facets (or sides), and bounces back up through the face of the gem showcasing a brilliant light show!

8

August 2021

Square Cuts There are two main types of cuts when looking for a square look. The most popular being Princess Cut, and another unfamiliar cut is the Ascher.

Princess Cut

The princess cut diamond evolved from the French cut, which evolved from the table cut appearing in the 14th century. It features facets similar to the brilliant cut that showcase a gem’s gorgeous inner beauty!

Rainbow Princess Cut Sapphires Ring in White Gold

Asscher Cut

The distinctive Asscher cut diamond is easily distinguishable from the Princess cut by a couple of its most dominant traits. It may look similar to its sister-cut - the emerald cut - whose straight step-cut facets allow for a perfect glimpse inside the stone. But Asscher cuts are a clip-cornered squarer version of the emerald cut rather than elongated and rectangular. Asscher Cut Umbalite Garnet and Diamonds Ring in 14K White Gold

Trilliant & Trillion Cut

The trilliant and trillion cuts are believed to date back to the 18th century in Amsterdam, and then later the name was finally coined by Leon Finker. The triangular shape makes for one-of-a-kind designs and stands out from other cuts. The difference between these two cuts is Trilliant cuts have a sharper point and Trillion cuts have more rounded points. These two styles are oftentimes used as side-stones in designs, but make for show-stopping center stones as well!

Emerald Cut

Similar to that of the Asscher cut, Emerald cuts feature a step-like look that really shows off the inside of the stone. When used on more transparent gems such as Peridot, the birthstone for August, it gives the gemstone a mirrored look for that extra bling! When used on stones such as emeralds and rubies, this style allows the wearer to see the natural inclusions inside each stone that make them so unique.

LEFT TO RIGHT: Trillion Cut Peridot and Diamonds Ring in 14K Yellow and White Gold; Trilliant Cut Diamond Ring in 14K White Gold.

Fantasy Cut

At UniQ Jewelry Gallery, our utmost favorite cut of them all: fantasy cut. These are truly one-of-a-kind, one-in-a-million gemstone cuts. Each of these gemstones is cut and faceted to your wildest imagination! These types of cuts are what take our one-of-a-kind designs to the next level. See some of our favorite show stoppers.

MARLITA WALKER REVIEWS

DEAR EDWARD BY ANN NAPOLITAN

}

QUESTION: How does a twelve-year-old boy move forward in his life as the lone survivor of an airplane crash that kills 191 people, especially when three of those victims were his family? ANSWER: Little by little, with the support of people who desperately want him to heal.

Ann Napolitan crafts an unusual story. One of my high anxiety moments is getting on a plane, but I choose to do it because my grandkiddos live in California, and it is a necessity for me to see them! So imagine my difficulty in opening the first chapter and realizing that the author will give us a “play by play” of the hours preceding the crash. It took me a few days to pick this book back up, but it was a deeply worthwhile decision. Not only does the reader get a glimpse into the lives of everyday people traveling to Los Angeles with hopes and dreams for their futures, but the singular story of Eddie trying to find his hopes and dreams again is heart-wrenching as well as uplifting. When Eddie wakes up in the sterile hospital room to see his stricken aunt and uncle, ready to step into their new parental roles (roles that will be an uphill, day-by-day struggle), he is numb with denial and pain. Not wanting to move into their “nursery,” a reminder of the many losses his aunt has suffered through miscarriages, Eddie chooses to find solace at the neighbor’s home. His sleeplessness can only be reversed on the sleeping bag of Shay’s bedroom floor each evening. Shay, also twelve, seems to be the one person who

10

August 2021

can allow Edward (renamed by his aunt) to be himself --and Shay definitely remains herself: brutally frank with questions about his brother Jordan, about the flight, about the “idiot” kids at school, about pushing him to move ahead when he is unsure. Edward doesn’t need to tiptoe around Shay as he does so many others, so their relationship gives some normalcy back to his upended life. So many others step into Edward’s world to fill in little pieces of his emptiness. Compassionate Principal Arundhi offers a small job of fern-caring to Edward, not only sharing his joy in flora but also knowing that Edward might find some peace in developing an interest in something. Ever protective, Uncle John eventually discovers ways to communicate better, bringing honesty and vulnerability into Edward’s healing. Patient therapist Dr. Mike offers small steps of counsel when Edward wonders why he continues to think about the crash on a daily basis after three years: “What happened is baked into your bones, Edward. It lives under your skin. It’s not going away. It’s part of you and will be part of you every moment until you die. What you’ve been working on since the first time I met you is learning to live with

that.” Having experienced the deaths of my two sisters, this line deeply resonated with me. As I muddled through several years of pain, this truth became firmly embedded: loss does not go away; it becomes a part of your story, but somehow, at some point, God gives the wisdom to learn to live with it. Juliane Diller had to learn this truth. In 1971 she fell from a burning plane, still strapped to her seat after lightning struck the wing. This 17-year-old had to summon the courage to find her way out of the Peruvian jungle on her own, the sole survivor of the 86 passenger crash. One victim was her mother, who sat right next to her as the plane descended. Her story is also one of learning to live every day with her memories and loss, just like Edward. Sometimes truth is just as strange as fiction. Marlita Walker Marlita is a native Michigander, who returned back to the area after 18 years spent in IL & PA. When not on cruising adventures with her hubby in their vintage Roadtrek camper van; she relaxes by re-arranging her home decor, walking with friends, and connecting with her 10 grands who live in TN and CA. KIM CARSON INTERVIEWED CASPER TER KUILE, AUTHOR OF

The Power

of Ritual

There’s something comforting in rituals. For one you can count on them. When everything else is out of control you can always count on a ritual to center you again. It’s familiar, it’s comforting, it’s a safe spot through life’s daily ups and downs. There was a time in America where church was considered a “sacred” ritual. But over the last two decades Gallop reported that the percentage of Americans attending a church, synagogue or mosque sharply dropped and is at an all time low averaging 50% in 2018. So what happened? I interviewed Casper tur Kuile, a Harvard Divinity School fellow and author of The Power of Ritual: Turning Everyday Activities Into Soulful Practices.

KIM: So tell me what your book is really about? CASPER: So we’re in this strange

and interesting moment when more and more of us, are less and less religious. Forty percent of Millennials now describe themselves as having no religious affiliation, and at the same time, it seems more and more people are feeling disconnected. And so what the book is about is figuring out what are the practices that can help us feel deeply connected to ourselves, to one another, the natural world and the transcendent. I’m hoping that people will will pick up some interesting and fun practices to help reconnect with what’s most important.

K: This Millennial disconnect from God, why did it happen? C: Well, in an interesting way, even though people are saying

that they’re less and less religious they’re actually still very

12

August 2021

spiritual. So one in five people who say they’re religious still pray everyday and two out of three even believe in God or a higher power. So I think what we’re seeing is a not necessarily a decline in religion but a transformation of it. People are showing up and feeling spiritually connected in all sorts of unlikely places like maybe the gym, maybe their family, nature, people going for a hike or getting on a river or a lake. There are so many ways in which people are still very spiritual even though they are outside a traditional church.

K: Do you think that it was just that their parents didn’t raise them up in church? C: Yeah, it happens in all sorts of ways. There’s people like

me, who grew up never going to church. So there’s not even sort of a rejection of religion because there wasn’t any in the first place. But there’s most definitely a large number of people, I think, who have felt perhaps marginalized by their experience in religion or just feel like it’s not right for them. It isn’t engaging. It doesn’t feel authentic. So they go looking for spirituality elsewhere. Just look at the massive growth of astrology apps, self help books, looking up things like the Enneagram kind of stuff. They’re still very hungry for spirituality.

moxiemediagroup.com

K: So is the meaningful connection with others replacing the Jesus experience? C: Well, I think people will find the right language for them to

describe the thing that’s most important. The book really looks at four ways of connecting, and one of them is with your authentic self. So practices like a Sabbath for example that really help you unplug from the distractions of the everyday and remember what’s most important. But also connecting to other people over a meal or working out together. Finally the last two connections are with nature and then with the transcendence. I still think a connection with something bigger than ourselves is really present for a lot of people, even if maybe the way in which they’re talking about it is changing.

SHE MEANS

BUSINESS

K: Your book is about the different paths people are exploring to find connection. But what role does runaway technology play in relationships?

Let Everyone Know You Mean Business

C: You know, it’s so interesting because relationships are always

K: You’ve talked about meditation but with the over stimulation of technology one of the biggest problems for a lot of people is calming the mind from being overstimulated, so where to begin? C: I think this is why people are developing their own rituals. In the

morning, and before bedtime as well, build a daily rhythm that gives you a little break from the phone, from the screen of the TV, the computer. A ritual that just says okay let’s take a half an hour, make a delicious herbal tea, get ready for bed, read a couple pages. Something to build that daily rhythm of life because it can kind of hold you when everything else is falling apart to have those rituals that give you a sense of stability. Even before we had language anthropologists tell us we had rituals. And so without those rituals we really feel disoriented. So whether it’s developing rituals as a family or as a team at work, or just for yourself, having those rituals in your daily life is one of the most important ways that we feel mentally and spiritually well. changing depending on the technology that we have. When the airplane was invented suddenly, we could stay in touch with people who were much farther away. The same is true right now. I think it’s all about us, developing our muscles, to use our technology intentionally. It’s an amazing tool that helps us stay connected. I was born and raised in the UK and so to be able to live in the US and still exchange messages every day and send funny selfies that’s wonderful. But if we get addicted to our phones like so many of us do it can become a really unpleasant experience. And so we need practices, a tech Sabbath where every week we just turn off our phone maybe for an hour, maybe for a day to strengthen that muscle of choicefulness in how we engage with our technology. I’m really passionate about helping people build a ritual around the things that we already love to make them sacred in our life.

Steps toward

Superior Sleep

WHILE IT’S FAIRLY COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT QUALITY SLEEP IS ESSENTIAL TO OVERALL WELLNESS, THERE ARE SEVERAL FACTORS THAT CAN KEEP YOU FROM GETTING THE REST YOU NEED. HOWEVER, OVERCOMING THEM IS WELL WITHIN YOUR CONTROL.

“A lack of sleep can often be the result of poor habits, environmental variables or a combination of factors,” said Dr. Sujay Kansagra, an associate professor at Duke University Medical Center and sleep health expert for Mattress Firm. “Undiagnosed medical disorders aside, most people find that overcoming their sleep obstacles is very achievable.”

Try improving your sleep with these 7 tips from Kansagra: 1. Create an atmosphere conducive to sleep by choosing comfortable

5. If your mattress shows signs of age, it may be the reason you have trouble falling asleep. There are several factors that determine the “shelf life” of your mattress, including quality and usage, so it’s important to evaluate your mattress regularly to make sure it’s still giving you the support you need for a good night’s sleep.

2. Blue light emitted by electronic devices and ambient light may

It’s best to remove or limit cellphones and other sources of bright light from the bedroom at least 30 minutes before it’s time for you to fall asleep.

3. Establish a bedtime routine and stick to it. At about the same time 7. Remember that good daytime habits promote better quality each evening, listen to soothing music, read a book or take a warm bath or shower. Yoga moves that relax muscles and promote steady breathing can be helpful but avoid vigorous activity that accelerates your heart rate before bedtime.

4. Be conscious of factors that may affect the quality of your rest. If you have reflux or experience frequent back pain, your sleep may not be as restful. Consider upgrading your bed with an adjustable base that allows you to change your sleep position with the simple push of a button. A slight elevation to your neck and head can allow for a more open airway and a quieter night of sleep. Adjustable bases like those from Mattress Firm offer a movable foundation for your mattress. Because of its adaptability, an adjustable base is suitable for sleepers with chronic pain or reflux, as well as the average sleeper looking for more comfort. 16

sleep at night. You may be rewarded with a better night’s sleep by exercising daily, maintaining a healthy and balanced diet and reducing or eliminating nicotine. Avoid naps during the day if possible, but if one is required, limit it to 30 minutes or less and take it early in the afternoon. Get outside during the morning to enjoy the benefits of natural light, which is a strong regulator of the biological clock. (Family Features)

ife seems to move faster and faster, right?! And every day we all wear clothes. As my friend, colleague, and style maven mentor Brenda Kinsel says, “We all have adventures in our clothes. We all take our clothes off at the end of the day. In the morning we start the process all over again. Getting dressed is an ordinary thing and it is an extraordinary thing.”

FOLLOW THESE FIVE TIPS TO COMPLETE THIS NECESSARY DAILY PROCESS WITH EASE:

Schedule time to do just that. Plan ahead by giving yourself the luxury of 10, 30, or 60 minutes, on the front end of your week, to plan your wardrobe.

Necessary changes. Make any changes now, while you have time, or re-think a change in garments to create your looks for the week.

Consider your activities and dress goals for the upcoming week. Know the level and type of garments you need for the week. Do you need professional looks for five days this week, or a combination of three professional and two smart casual ensembles? Next, what is taking place in your evening and weekend activities? Will you need separate outfits for these activities and outings?

Make sure the garments are ready for wear. Once your garments/outfits are selected, check them for stains, and any minor repairs, that if let go would spoil your look and stress you out as you attempt to make it out the door on the day of wear.

Complete your look. Select accessories, shoes, tote/handbag, and any special need in foundation wear, and as you did with your garments, confirm that these items are in good repair and ready to finish your look.

A simple plan, allowing time for yourself, and knowing your dress needs for the week will allow you to not only feel confident with ease, but look great. 18

hile adults may joke about needing to relearn how to be around others in a post-pandemic world, children can also benefit from a refresh of certain soft skills - especially young children who may not remember pre-pandemic life. Building on these skills can also help children prepare for a successful return to school. In fact, data from Mintel shows parents’ top learning priorities for their children prior to entering grade school are how to play well with others (67%) and good manners (66%). “Summertime is a great time for families to help their children focus on social skills that may not have gotten much attention this past year, particularly if families were social distancing or in quarantine,” said Taunya Banta, inclusion services manager for KinderCare Learning Centers. “Parents can set their children up for success when school starts again in the fall by helping them work on these soft skills in relaxed settings like family gatherings and on the neighborhood playground.”

Consider these ways parents can help their children build social skills. 20

NAME EMOTIONS

Naming emotions is an important part of learning how to regulate them. If your children don’t understand what emotions they’re experiencing, they may be confused or upset by how they feel and that could amplify the feelings and make it more difficult to regulate the emotions. Talk with your children about your own feelings, or the feelings of characters in books, to help them learn to identify emotions and appropriate ways to address those feelings. For example, “I’m sad, but I know a hug will help me feel better,” or “I’m mad and that’s OK. It’s not OK to hit, but I can punch a pillow or stomp my feet to get the feelings out of my body.” As a family, try practicing some simple emotion regulation strategies like deep breathing. To help younger children breathe deep, hold up two fingers and ask them to smell the flower as they inhale (one finger) and blow out the candle as they exhale (the other).

PLAY WITH OTHER CHILDREN

Play gives children an opportunity to freely express their emotions and thoughts, work out feelings and explore relationships in a safe, lighthearted way. If you feel comfortable and

can follow health and safety guidelines, visit a playground or set up play dates with other children of similar ages then take a step back to let the children play together. If your children aren’t ready to play with others, allow them to stay close to you until they feel ready to join the other children. Once the children are playing together, observe their interactions and talk with your children (in the moment or later) about how they felt. If they had fun, ask what they enjoyed. If disagreements or awkward moments came up, help your children problem-solve ways they could address those situations next time. “Most importantly, remember children of all ages have an incredible capacity for resiliency,” Banta said. “Just knowing they have a steady base to return to, a safe place where they’re loved and appreciated for who they are, can give children the courage they need to face the challenge of a new or uncertain social situation with self-confidence and courage.” For more tips to help your children build or improve their social skills, visit kindercare.com. How to Navigate Family Feelings about Returning to School

Whether it’s your child’s first day of kindergarten or the start of middle school, back-to-school season can bring a range of feelings – from worry to excitement – for the entire family. This year may be more emotional as many families spent the better part of the past two school years at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“IT’S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT EVEN IN THE BEST OF TIMES, IT’S NORMAL FOR CHILDREN TO EXPRESS FEELINGS OF SADNESS, ISOLATION OR STRESS,” said Tyreca Elliott, from KinderCare Learning Centers’ inclusion services team. “Learning how to address those feelings helps us build selfconfidence, resilience and independence. What’s important is the way adults respond to children’s stress. Offering comfort, reassurance and assisting with problem solving will help children learn and grow from stress in a positive way.” As an added bonus, Elliott said many of the most effective ways to help children learn to navigate their feelings work just as well with adults. Consider these three tips to help your children (and yourself) manage emotions during the transition back to school.

Plan Ahead The fear of the unknown can be stressful. Children

who aren’t able to clearly articulate their feelings likely won’t be able to make the connection between new, uncertain situations – like going to school and being around other people – and their feelings. Instead they may become overwhelmed by emotions, which might look like more meltdowns, clinginess or a variety of other behaviors. Talk with your children about how they feel about going back to school ahead of the first day of class. Ask questions to help them determine why they feel particular feelings when they think about school then work together to solve potential issues. That could mean finding a way to meet your children’s teachers ahead of time, whether virtually or inperson, or practicing introducing themselves to classmates.

Build A Consistent Routine Routines can give children (and

adults) a sense of security and structure, which in turn make it easier to cope with big emotions like stress and anxiety. Try to stay consistent, and if you need to make adjustments, talk them through with your children. Be sure to mention key milestones instead of times, particularly if they can’t tell time yet. Make sure your children have opportunities to ask questions about any changes to routines. They may need reassurance before they’re ready to face something new.

Create Special Family Moments As important as routine

is, it’s just as important to prioritize quality time together. That could mean a vacation or something as simple as Saturday bike rides or Sunday morning pancakes. Plan a family outing or special time together to celebrate completing the first week of school. Family rituals and celebrations can give children and adults something to look forward to. Quality time together also helps families build resiliency. (Family Features) For more tips to navigate back-to-school season, visit kindercare.com.

Lessons from Expert Educators Tips from experienced teachers for new & aspiring educators Each school year offers exciting opportunities for little learners to discover and explore new topics, make friends and master new skills. While much of the focus is on families during the back-to-school season, it’s also an important time for educators, especially those who are working with young children or are just starting their careers. These tips from award-winning and long-term educators at KinderCare can help new and aspiring teachers prepare for a successful start to the school year and their careers.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY

Making time to connect with families gives teachers opportunities to build bonds, which is essential for success. Communicating and understanding their unique needs shows you have their children’s best interests at heart. By regularly sharing stories and observations about each child’s progress, teachers can also provide families with a sense of reassurance their children are being recognized and cared for as the unique people they are.

NEVER GIVE UP ON A CHILD

Each child faces unique hurdles as he or she climbs the educational ladder, with some facing more challenges than others. While at times it can be frustrating to tailor lesson plans to meet each child’s individual needs, Joan Coberg, a teacher of 40 years, recommends one important trait: patience.

Source: KinderCare

“The best advice I would give is to never give up on a child,” Coberg said. “Have lots of patience. Always lead with love and kindness; be respectful. When I first started my career at KinderCare 40 years ago, I was learning, too. As teachers, we also learn from the children.”

SET BOUNDARIES FOR SUCCESS

Similar to open lines of communication with families, getting to know your students individually can help build relationships

necessary for a successful school year. Jami Vandegrift, a prekindergarten teacher and 2018 KinderCare Teacher of the Year, said this helps build mutual respect between teacher and student. “As you build relationships, you will start to establish boundaries and routines,” Vandegrift said. “Once you feel comfortable with the kids and the room, you can start bringing in the curriculum. Starting as a new teacher, I always thought I had to do it all at once. I’ve learned over time to start small and build each week on something new.”

BE WILLING TO CHANGE

Consistency and structure within the classroom setting are important for establishing routines, but it’s also helpful to have an open mind and to stop an activity when children lose interest. Be observant, flexible and willing to rethink schedules, classroom arrangements, transitions and more. Stopping to observe and ensure students are engaged can help promote success as many children learn best when fueled by personal interests.

LET CHILDREN CHOOSE THEIR PATHS & RECOGNIZE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

School days often include activity time when students can explore interests like art, music, physical activity and more. When it’s time for activities, try letting children choose what they’d like to do first. This can help foster independence while easing transitions, according to Hattie Mae Covington, a toddler teacher of 45 years. It also opens the door for teachers to cheer on their students for succeeding in activities of their choosing. “Kids, especially young children, love to be recognized and rewarded for doing good work,” Covington said. “High fives and smiley face stickers go a long way toward encouraging them and helping them be successful. Celebrating students for their accomplishments can be a meaningful way to create bonds that support their ongoing interest in learning.” Find more experts’ advice to set new teachers up for success at kindercare.com. Effective Professional Body Language The risk of being seen as an amateur in your profession can easily show in simple things, such as soft skills that suggest a poor work ethic and poor nonverbal communication practices. Avoiding these and other risks is key to creating a positive professional experience. Effective, courteous, respectful behavior will produce

lasting relationships and professional endeavors that run more smoothly and gain quicker results. One valuable skill is understanding body language. This gives you the ability to quickly and effectively “read between the lines,” interpret the silent signals leaked by others, and position and conduct yourself to make a great impression.

THE EYES BREAKING EYE CONTACT IMPACT/PERCEPTION: A broken gaze may signal a lagging conversation or that listening has stopped In intense/intimate conversations we look at one another more often

THE FACE STARING

HEAD NODS

THE SMILE

IMPACT/PERCEPTION: Negative contact that may be considered rude/a threat

IMPACT/PERCEPTION: Indicators of approval, understanding & agreement

A manner in which dominance, superiority or lack of respect is delivered

Head nods are very important to communication and indicate that you are listening and understanding

IMPACT/PERCEPTION: A genuine smile affects not only the corners of the mouth, but changes the entire face The fake smile is easy to produce, but will look strained & stiff

BODY POSTURES Postures can show status; open postures are perceived as more positive & can be more persuasive

“ CLOSED” BODY POSTURES Arms folded, legs crossed, body turned away IMPACT/PERCEPTION: Feelings of vulnerability, discomfort

MIRRORING

“ OPEN” BODY POSTURES Legs uncrossed, arms open with palms exposed or relaxed at the body’s side IMPACT/PERCEPTION: Signs of openness, accessibility, willingness to interact

LEANING

Assists in connecting and creating intimacy in the conversation

FORWARD LEANING

BACKWARD LEANING

IMPACT/PERCEPTION: Aligned with positive attitudes and increased verbal output

IMPACT/PERCEPTION: May signal dislike, negativity or dominance

Assuming the same body posture to match the other person IMPACT/PERCEPTION: A nonverbal way of saying you like/agree. Shows connection and engagement Kelly Duggan

It’s important to note that people in Western culture judge more from appearance than reality, respond to a firm handshake and need eye contact.

Ready, Set,

School Employees & Back To School

Here at Pest Pros, we put a high value on personal and professional development. This time of year might not be just for the kids returning back to school but also for the employees. We encourage our team to pursue their dreams and desires and are in full support of their endeavors. Professionals choose to go back to school for a variety of reasons. Here are a few things to consider before you make the decision to further your education.

Do you have the time to fully commit to your education?

Going to school requires a significant commitment of time and if you are planning to go back to school it is important to consider if you will be able to manage the demands. Ensuring that you are prioritizing school over many other demands will ensure that you are able to get the most out of your education.

Will the program help me achieve my career goals?

We have heard stories about people that pursue a program and halfway through decide that it is not something they want to do. When deciding on a program we suggest taking the time to evaluate if the program will enhance your current career goals. Conduct research in your field to determine what steps are important to take to reach your desired level of education.

How are you paying for the educational investment?

School can be costly. This is true if you are seeking a college degree program, taking a seminar, or attending a conference. All of these avenues to pursue education can be very costly so when making a decision on if the program will be worth it consider how you are

paying for it. Oftentimes, employers will encourage you to take training courses and will pick up the bill as we do at Pest Pros instead of taking our personal debt to pursue professional development.

Our team is extremely passionate about giving people opportunities they would otherwise not have and that is why education is so important to us. If you are considering enhancing your personal or professional development we say, go for it! - Pest Pros
