FROM THE CEO

REFLECTING ON 2021 In 2021, we recognized an important milestone—20 years of women-led, women-focused impact. 20 years of transforming the lives of women and girls by mobilizing the collective power and passion of all people working together. Each of you made that first generation possible with your courageous donations, your hard work as volunteers and advocates, and your passion for building a world where gender equity is the norm. As Ms. Foundation President and CEO Teresa Younger has said, if the world expects women’s funds to help rectify hundreds of years of discrimination and inequity, we need at least a generation to start making real change. And that is exactly what this community has done for The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio—given us a generation to begin making significant strides towards gender equity. In just 20 years, your generosity made it possible for our small but mighty organization to:

We’re incredibly proud of these accomplishments. We know that none of those things would have happened without your sacrifices. Whether you’ve donated $1 or $1 million, it’s the combined power of those donations and many others that has made The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio what it is today. By trusting our model and pooling your resources, we’ve all been able to invest faster and more efficiently in gender equity on behalf of our entire community. Because of our collective strength, we don’t have to wait for change to occur—we can create it ourselves. As you read this annual report, I hope you’ll feel the depth of your impact and what an important part of our first 20 years you’ve been. We quite literally could not have done it without you. We are a selfmade movement, one that is still fueled by all of you and the strength of your many donations working together. It’s a simple formula—the more that you all invest in us, the more we can achieve together. Thank you for the trust you’ve placed in us during our first generation. We are forever grateful. We hope you’ll be inspired to continue working by our side as donors, volunteers, and advocates. I can’t wait to see what amazing things we’ll do together in this next generation.

• commission 5 groundbreaking research reports • make more than $4 million in grants to nonprofits working on the frontlines to create gender equity

With gratitude,

• create a proprietary equity-building tool called Gender By Us • host numerous community engagement programs, including several Statehouse Days • launch the Enduring Progress Initiative to help close the extraordinary funding gap faced by organizations led by and for women of color

ABOUT THE WOMEN’S FUND

IN MEMORY

The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio is a public foundation whose mission is to transform the lives of women and girls by mobilizing the collective power and passion of all people working together. Our vision is a world where gender equity is the norm in work and life. We are committed to creating social change through our strategic investments in women and girls, our groundbreaking research, and our bold advocacy.

At the end of 2021, The Women’s Fund lost two fierce champions, thoughtful donors, and dear friends in Loann and Jameson Crane.

LOANN AND JAMESON CRANE

Loann was one of the most transformational philanthropists Central Ohio has ever seen. Her courageous spirit and endless generosity to The Women’s Fund and countless other Central Ohio institutions cannot be overstated. We are incredibly fortunate to count Loann as one of our fifteen trailblazing founders. She was a vocal advocate for gender-lens investing long before that concept was widely understood, a testament to both her vision and passion for equity. She was also staunchly committed to building wealth for all women, a goal that her extraordinary investments will support long into the future. Jameson was also a tireless supporter and loyal advocate for The Women’s Fund and its mission. He broke ground as one of the first men to generously help underwrite The Women’s Fund’s operations, a role he shared with many members of the extended Crane family. The major investments that he made along with his dear deceased wife of 59 years, Ann Burba Crane, continue to sustain our work to this day. His brave leadership will set an example for many generations to come. While we mourn the loss of Loann and Jameson, we will continue to be buoyed by their exceptional examples and are honored to be included in their ever-deepening philanthropic legacies.

“ OUR IMPACT

2021

Despite the continuing pandemic, our donors ensured that our impact in 2021 was deeper than ever. Because you donated when we needed it most, The Women’s Fund continued to deliver on its mission to transform the lives of thousands of women and girls despite steep obstacles.

The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio has been an amazing partner to Proyecto Mariposas. Our organization has been able to support a greater number of Latina girls and women in Central Ohio. We are inspired by the work The Fund is doing to support diverse organizations working towards gender equality and empowerment of girls and women in our community. We are immensely grateful to The Women’s Fund and their partners like the Terez family. -YAHAIRA ROSE, PROYECTO MARIPOSAS

“ Lesbian, queer, and same gender-loving women and girls are often overlooked when it comes to LGBTQ+ health education and research. The opportunity to devote grant funds directly to a health and wellness fair tailored to the evidence-based needs of this population is extremely rare. The forward thinking and innovative nature of the funding guidelines issued by The Women’s Fund allowed us the creativity to serve the specific needs of our community in exactly the ways they are asking us to…The Women’s Fund is the most flexible and community-based funder we work with. -JULIA APPLEGATE, EQUITAS HEALTH INSTITUTE

The Women’s Fund was the first grant to support our mission. Prior, we were implementing programs with minimal resources. As a Black woman and entrepreneur serving youth, I often felt overlooked or less valued due to social status and being a lesser-known organization. The Women’s Fund saw me, heard me, and supported my work. Though we have come so far, there is still much more to do, and The Women’s Fund is genuinely consistent and intentional. The Women’s Fund’s actions align with their words when it comes to supporting and investing in women. -ERYN HATHAWAY, ERYN PINK

LOOKING BACK ON

OUR MULTIYEAR GRANT PILOT In 2018, The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio launched a three-year funding pilot, a bold step to test the effectiveness of trust-based, multi-year grants to strategic partners. Specifically, from 2018 to 2020, we invested $270,000 in three partners who focused collaboratively on systemic issues that affect women’s wealth accumulation, including access to quality, affordable childcare; teen pregnancy; and the need for sweeping policies to positively benefit women and families. We couldn’t be prouder of the success of this pilot, which included these incredible partners and their dedicated teams. 8

THE WOMEN’S PUBLIC POLICY NETWORK The Women’s Public Policy Network (WPPN) brings together nearly 40 organizations to advocate for public policies that build economic opportunities for women and their families. They coordinate statewide legislative efforts and advocacy and are a key player in educating the public and lawmakers about issues affecting women. With our funding, WPPN mobilized around several issues and achieved significant wins. These included working to end the pink tax on tampons in Ohio, gathering a coalition to enact updates to outdated child marriage laws, and contributing to advocacy related to the gender and racial wealth gap. “The Women’s Fund is unique in that it’s a true partnership in grant funding. The three-year grant made us look long-term in a way that we don’t always get to,” said Erin Ryan, former WPPN Managing Director.

POLICY MATTERS OHIO Policy Matters Ohio’s (PMO) long-term goals include making childcare affordable for all who need it, paying childcare workers a living wage, and helping more women get and keep good jobs. PMO advocates for these important issues through research, public education, strategic communications, and coalition building. With our funding, PMO was able to build and align bipartisan coalitions like the Ohio Children’s Budget Coalition and the Ohio Legislative Children’s Caucus. Our flexible, trust-based grantmaking enabled PMO to highlight the need for federal relief for childcare during the pandemic. The consistent funding also gave PMO the opportunity to shape public understanding and debate around childcare in new ways. “The Women’s Fund’s support helped PMO become an authority on this issue. We may not have been asked to provide input on critical decisions about relief and recovery without this support,” said Will Petrik, PMO Budget Researcher.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF GREATER OHIO Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio’s (PPGOH) Peer Education Program (hosted through the Ohio Center for Sex Education) is one of The Women’s Fund’s longest funded projects, a testament to our longstanding commitment to medically accurate sex education. Through the Peer Education Program, PPGOH trains young people about sexual and reproductive health while strengthening their confidence, leadership, and presentation skills. Because of our multi-year funding, PPGOH was able to build trusting relationships with students who participated throughout their 10th, 11th, and 12th grade years. “We wanted to recruit peer educators and have this program be a part of their full high school life. We wouldn’t be able to do that without the knowledge that we had this program [and funding] for three years,” said Diego Espino, PPGOH Vice President of Community Engagement.

GETTING TO KNOW

ANOUK MORITZ Every year, we recruit high school-age students to participate as grant readers because we know that those with the most pertinent life experiences must have a seat at our table. Anouk Moritz, a junior at Columbus Alternative High School and four-time grant reader, recently shared her passion for The Women’s Fund and its work to create gender equity. HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED WITH THE WOMEN’S FUND AND WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I first got started as a grant reader in my freshman year of high school. I found out about this incredible opportunity from the internship coordinator at my high school, and immediately signed up! The Women’s Fund’s intersectional mission to create “a future where gender equality is the norm in life and work” through collective action inspires me to be involved every year, and for many more to come. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A GRANT APPLICATION READER?

I have participated as a grant application reader four times and each time—online or in-person—have connected with people from every walk of life over our shared purpose. Learning from and getting to know my group members is undoubtedly my favorite part of grant-reading. IS THERE A PARTICULAR MEMORY THAT STANDS OUT FOR YOU?

I have made so many memories, but my very first grant reading is the most salient. I was a freshman and very nervous to participate in this event with actual professionals who knew what they were doing. As soon as I sat down at my table, the facilitator and fellow grant readers made me feel at ease. They were supportive, friendly, and interested in the same issues that had brought all of us to the table. Our varied expertise and experiences brought so much to the grant discussion. I left that day feeling empowered and excited to get involved, and I carry that spark with me to this day. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PROGRAM THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THROUGH THE WOMEN’S FUND?

As Kelley always says, there are so many amazing programs that apply each year. One program that has stood out to me is Eryn PiNK, an organization dedicated to empowering young girls—particularly Black girls, who are often stereotyped as being too loud or too bossy—to advocate for themselves through programs like Lunch Box Girl Talk or the Give That Girl the Mic talent showcase. Former Eryn PiNK participants are invited back to become

mentors in the program, thus building a beautiful support network that undoubtedly changes lives. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE GIRLS AT THE TABLE?

The perspective of teenage girls is too often dismissed and undervalued in our society, but we are a powerful force bringing valuable experiences to the table. Beyond that, many of the programs that apply to The Women’s Fund are catering to preteen and teenage girls, so our perspective is critical to reviewing and giving feedback on these programs. HOW HAS BEING A PART OF THIS PROCESS IMPACTED YOU?

I have learned so much through participating as a grant reader these past three years. I feel more comfortable speaking up and sharing my ideas, as well as listening carefully and coming to a group consensus. The grant readings have also made me aware of the multitude of organizations doing phenomenal work in Central Ohio, inspiring me to get involved. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THE WOMEN’S FUND?

I would like more people to know about The Women’s Fund, period. For anyone looking to serve their community, The Women’s Fund events and grant readings are a perfect place to start. Also, I believe that it is important to realize how remarkable an organization like The Women’s Fund is—their mission to specifically invest in women and girls to create social change is rare yet necessary. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

I plan to attend college and major in City and Regional Planning, with a focus on transportation. I strongly believe that improving the public transportation and walk/bikeability of our cities is critical to building a more sustainable and just society. I also plan to continue serving my community by getting involved in local nonprofits and activist organizations. I’ll probably adopt some cats along the way, too. 9

Did The Women’s Fund make annual grants in 2011? In the early days, The Women’s Fund made grants twice per year. Starting around 2011, we pivoted to making grants once per year at the beginning of the calendar year. Since grants were made in fall of 2010 (fiscal year 2011), no annual grants are shown for calendar year 2011 above, but rest assured, The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio has made grants every single fiscal year since our founding!

$4 million in grants over 20 years… Wow! This impressive number is all because of people like you. The Women’s Fund is able to make grants every year to advance social change because of the generous donations from our community. By donating to The Women’s Fund, your commitment helps advance essential gender equity research, advocacy, and grantmaking efforts. Thank you for your continued support! 12

FROM THEN TO NOW

GRANT PARTNER STORIES At The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio, one way we drive equity is by providing courageous capital to new programs on the cutting edge of systemic change. We pool the dollars raised from hundreds of generous donors to help lay strong foundations for these programs’ success. Below are just two of the programs that have thrived at transforming the lives of women and girls thanks to The Women’s Fund’s investments. GROWING TOGETHER

In 2004, The Women’s Fund made a grant to help Innovative Farmers of Ohio start Growing Together, a program to support Central Ohio women in agriculture. In the years since that first grant, these women have made major contributions to our region’s farming community. Growing Together drew women farmers to Central Ohio because there were no women-centric business development programs for them in other communities. Those farmers have since fostered the growth of the local food movement and helped advance agricultural sustainability initiatives. For example, 5th generation farmer Val Jorgensen has grown her business, Jorgensen Farms, into a popular event venue and organic farm here in Franklin County. She also serves on the board of Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association, an organization working to advance sustainable and organic agriculture. Similarly, Janell Baran left her 20-year career in computer technology to start Blue Owl Garden Emporium in Licking County. Her business has flourished and provides herbs, produce, and other goods to local farmers’ markets and restaurants. She has also received U.S. Department of Agriculture grants to help fund research to stop the spread of invasive species. We’re excited to watch women farmers like Val and Janell continue to thrive and exercise their influence as women farmers in the years ahead.

PROGRAMS FOR OHIO WOMEN EMPOWERED TO REPRESENT

In 2002, The Women’s Fund made its first grant to support Programs for Ohio Women Empowered to Represent (POWER) at The Ohio State University. POWER is dedicated to cultivating gender equity in politics and helps catapult women into public office. Since its founding, approximately 600 women have participated in POWER’s Ready to Run program, a one-day nonpartisan conference that prepares women for office. Additionally, they have hosted over 800 participants in their New Leadership program, a weeklong residential institute that focuses on collegiate women’s political potential. As POWER Program Director, Dr. Tina Pierce, explains, “when you invest in women, you’re investing in communities, you’re investing in humanity, you’re investing in a commitment to be able to move forward with social justice issues that will impact our entire world.” Since 2002, The Women’s Fund has made numerous grants to sustain and grow POWER, and those investments are paying off. Already, 10% of Ready to Run participants either currently hold office or have run for office. Similarly, 10% of New Leadership participants commit to run for office within 5 years. The Ready to Run conference recently took place in April 2022, and we look forward to watching POWER’s impact continue to grow.

INVEST IN ENDURING PROGRESS

Thanks to brave and generous EPI seed investors, The Women’s Fund is getting ready to consider another round of exciting investments. We will be sharing more about those in the coming months. WOMEN AND GIRLS OF COLOR DESERVE MORE THAN POCKET CHANGE

A 2020 report from the Ms. Foundation, Pocket Change: How Women and Girls of Color Do More with Less, demonstrates the glaring need for change. Nationally, foundations direct less than .5% of their giving to women and girls of color. This is how we’re responding. Through our Enduring Progress Initiative (EPI), The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio is confronting this urgent need for courageous capital with bolder vision, bigger dollars, and more trust. We will help close the discriminatory funding gap faced by organizations led by and for women and girls of color by making unrestricted investments of at least $50,000 at a time. Our goal is to center and uplift the lived experiences of women and girls of color who know what to do to effectively remove barriers and build equitable systems.

Bold progress will require even more bold investments. That is why we are focused on raising additional capital to ensure the Enduring Progress Initiative can take root and continue to grow. Please join us in creating systemic change. To learn more about making an investment, contact Drew Kaufman at dkaufman@womensfundcentralohio.org

The Enduring Progress Initiative was launched with groundbreaking support from:

ENDURING PROGRESS IN 2022

In 2021, The Women’s Fund made its first EPI investment in Zora’s House, a nonprofit founded and led by LC Johnson. Zora’s House is a coworking and community space that provides a place for women and gender expansive people of color to gather, connect, and thrive. At Keyholder Unplugged, LC explained the impact of The Women’s Fund’s investment:

“I often say I started working fulltime at Zora’s House in January 2021, but the truth is, I had been working at Zora’s House full time from the moment we opened in 2018. Thanks to Enduring Progress, 2021 was the first time I was being compensated for my work.” Dan & Christie Crane | Jean Droste | Mary Lazarus | Cindy Owens | Jody G. Scheiman | Rebecca Wiggins 14

TURNING GRIEF INTO A MOVEMENT

THE MONICA TEREZ GIRL POWER FUND Last fall, at Keyholder Unplugged, Tom Terez delivered a moving tribute in loving memory of his remarkable sister, Monica, who sadly passed away in 2019. As part of his tribute, he also introduced you to her family’s efforts to deepen her legacy of passion and compassion with the Monica Terez Girl Power Fund. As Tom described, Monica was all about girl power. As a beloved family member and a dedicated nurse, Monica was a force for good within her family and around the world. She selflessly supported her children, siblings, and nieces while also traveling to Haiti to care for struggling mothers and their babies and training local nurses to do the same. Monica never hesitated to go the extra mile to create a better future for others. Now, for her family, paying tribute to Monica is an ongoing journey with The Women’s Fund. When the family first approached our team during the summer of 2020, they hoped to honor Monica by helping to fund grants to programs serving pre-teen and teenage girls in Central Ohio. While they were understandably nervous about fundraising, they embraced her courage and set out to raise at least $10,000. They bravely approached family, friends, and colleagues and shared their enthusiasm for making the Monica Terez Girl Power Fund a reality. In just two months, they raised more three times their goal—over $32,000!

They then participated in The Women’s Fund’s annual grantmaking process and used the donations they raised to support four different Women’s Fund grant partners. Girl power is central to Monica’s story, and so is her mantra that we must keep going. In 2021, the Terez family followed her lead and launched their second fundraising campaign to help fund more Women’s Fund grants with donations from the Monica Terez Girl Power Fund. Even better, this time, another family of donors anonymously provided a generous match to support their efforts. Together, they raised over $51,000, all of which supported six different programs that create equity for pre-teen and teenage girls. Monica Terez has motivated her family to boldly find ways to invest in girls and young women who desperately deserve to grow up in an equitable world. Through her life of service, she has inspired them to channel the pain of losing her into something strong and beautiful. We are so grateful to Monica’s brother Tom Terez, her sister-in-law Angela Terez, her nieces Melanie Terez and Annie Terez, and her daughter Lauren Rendell for their diligent work, passion, and vision. The Women’s Fund is honored to be part of Monica Terez’s ongoing legacy. Learn more about The Monica Terez Girl Power Fund at www.girlpowerfund.org

The loss of Monica Terez (left), inspired Tom, Annie, Melanie, and Angela Terez (right) and Lauren Rendell (not pictured) to start the Monica Terez Girl Power Fund at The Women’s Fund. 16

The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio is a self-made foundation. What does that mean? The Women’s Fund’s endowment was seeded with donations from many generous individuals over the last 20 years. Thanks to those courageous donations and savvy, socially responsible investment strategies, the endowment has grown to more than $5 million. But continued grassroots support, including planned gifts, will be key to the continuing growth of the endowment and The Women’s Fund’s long-term sustainability. Thank you to all the donors who made this important asset possible over the last 20 years.
