My tribute is to Brian Kolda, my life partner and best friend. Brian is a true ally and advocate for women and girls and has shown enduring support of The Women’s Fund from the very beginning. He has invested time, talent and treasure to this organization, including participating as a grant reader and a multi-year participant at Keyholder. His passion is genuine and inspiring. He boldly champions women including myself, as well as women in our community, and is always willing to take action to promote social change.

Sally Bidlack was my mother who passed away this past February at the age of 95 from complications related to COVID. The child a Italian immigrants, my mother experienced adversity as a teenager that evoked a strong spirit of self reliance that has inspired me throughout my life.

Married at 19 and six children later, Sally joined the work force in 1964 and rose through the ranks to management position.

She encouraged me to enter the field of optometry in the 70s when there were few women in the field and applauded the advancements of women through the decades. She also lovingly accepted her gay grandson when he came out to her in the 90s. Sally didn’t set out to be a pioneer. She simply believed in herself, had a genuine appreciation for individual rights and empowerment and lived those ideals throughout her long life.
