Happy May, everyone!

May is one of my favorite months of the year. Everything is so alive…it’s as if the earth becomes a newborn baby again. The thing that I find so amazing is how the earth can change literally overnight. One day, our great outdoors is brown and gray...no life at all. Then we have a solid rain, and poof! The grass is green and there are flowers on the trees and bushes. The tulips pop their heads out. It is an amazing display of the perfection of the planet.

I remember celebrating May Day as a kid. On May 1st, my sisters and I would gather violets, dandelions, and leftover candied hearts from Valentine’s Day and put them in little baskets. (The “baskets” were nothing more than paper cupcake holders.) We would drop them off at the neighbors’ houses, ring the doorbell, and run! Those memories bring a smile to my face.

My favorite neighbors as a child were Mr. and Mrs. Quick. They lived right next door to us. Our families shared a wire backyard fence. They were “older.” I don’t believe they had any children. They were our surrogate grandparents, always there for the six kids next door. When the neighborhood kids would get together and put on a play, they were there to cheer us on. When our pet turtle, Timothy, died, they helped us bury him. When we built the Igloo Bug Town in our sandbox, we proudly showed it off to them. They were authentically impressed. What great memories.

We also celebrate Mother’s Day this month, which brings up fond memories of my mom, Anne. She was such a hard worker. She cooked three meals a day for eight people, took care of the six children she had over a stretch of 10 years, shopped for groceries, washed and ironed clothes, and kept the house clean. When Mother’s Day came around, we kids tried to make it special for her. We would bring her breakfast in bed, leaving a disaster in the kitchen that she would later clean up. I am so grateful that I was blessed to have a mom like her.

I want to wish all of our readers a terrific May, whether you are mothers or not. May is the month when we all get to start anew, just like Mother Earth!

Before signing off, I want to wish Roxy Orr, our Operations Manager, a happy anniversary at Women’s Edition. She celebrated 37 years with us on April 20th. I messed up last month and failed to mention it. So sorry, Roxy!

Happy anniversary!

Patio Fires and Feasts—Let’s Eat!

Mother’s Day Croissant Casserole

Cut about 6 croissants in half (like you would for making sandwiches) and spread each one with a bit of Dijon mustard. Place the bottoms of the croissants into a buttered 9x13-inch baking dish. Add slices of ham and Swiss cheese. Top with the rest of the croissants and slice the sandwiches in half. Sprinkle chunks of Brie around the sandwiches.

In a large bowl, whisk 4 eggs with 1 cup of heavy cream or Half and Half. Season the mixture with pepper, garlic powder, and any other seasonings you like. Pour the mixture over the sandwiches. Top with 1 cup of additional cheese. Push the sandwiches down a bit to soak up some of the egg mixture. Cover with foil. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 25 minutes. Melt 4 Tablespoons of butter with 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder and 1/4 teaspoon of thyme. Drizzle over the casserole. Bake for another 5 minutes.

Fluffy Buttermilk Pancakes

Blend 2 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 3 Tablespoons of sugar. In a separate bowl, mix 2 eggs, 3 cups of buttermilk, and 4 Tablespoons of melted butter. Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix until moistened. You will still see lumps, but do not overmix. Make pancakes according to griddle directions. Serve with fresh fruit, syrup, or a fruit sauce.

Egg Bites

Grinder Pasta Salad

Mix 2 cups of cooked pasta (any shape) with 1 cup of cooked chunked chicken breasts and an assortment of cut-up veggies per your taste—like onion, cucumber, pepper, carrots, celery, radishes, and tomatoes. If you prefer, use a bottle of chopped giardiniera. Season with desired spices. Add several slices of cut-up salami or pepperoni and a small can of sliced black olives. Pour a bit of bottled Italian vinaigrette over the mixture until you like the consistency. Refrigerate.

Mix together (a blender works well) 4 eggs, 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, 1/4 cup of shredded cheese, 1/4 cup of chopped spinach, and 1/3 cup of diced bell pepper. Add several shakes each of black pepper, salt, and garlic powder. Grease a muffin tin and divide the egg mixture evenly into the tins. Sprinkle a bit more cheese on top if desired. Set the muffin tin on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Let set for 5 minutes before serving.

Best Patio Hamburgers

For the burgers: Mix together 1 and 1/2 pounds of ground chuck, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of pepper, 2 dashes of Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, and salt and pepper as desired. Form into flat patties (about 5 or 6 ounces each). Grill. Toast your buns, adding cheese if desired. Serve with onion jam.

For the onion jam: Heat 1/4 cup of vegetable oil in a large skillet. Stir in 1/2 cup of white sugar, stirring until the mixture begins to caramelize—about 5 to 8 minutes. Add 2 sweet onions, thinly sliced (it should be about 4 cups). Cook for 10-15 minutes until onions are golden brown.

Garden Asparagus with Sesame

Wash, trim, and cut 2 pounds of fresh asparagus. Cook in boiling water for 4 minutes or until al dente. Drain and rinse with cold water and pat dry. Mix 4 teaspoons of soy sauce with 2 teaspoons of honey and 2 teaspoons of toasted sesame seed oil. Add 2 Tablespoons of toasted sesame seeds. Pour the mixture over the asparagus. Add additional spices if desired, like garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Chill and serve.

Graduation

Punch

Blend together 64 ounces of fruit punch, 3 cups of pineapple juice, and 1 liter of ginger ale or lemon-lime soda. Add ice and serve. Add cut-up oranges and cherries for a festive look.

Restaurant Style Cheese Dip

Cube 1 pound of white American cheese. Place in a large saucepan along with 2 teaspoons of onion powder, 2 teaspoons of garlic powder, 2 teaspoons of cumin, 2 cans of chopped green chilies, 1 Tablespoon of butter, and 1/2 cup of milk. Cook on low until everything is melty.

Hot Jezebel Cracker Top

Mix together one 18-ounce jar of apricot preserves, 1 Tablespoon of Dijon mustard, 2 Tablespoons of prepared horseradish, and black pepper as desired. Spoon on top of a softened 8-ounce block of cream cheese. Serve with crackers, vegetables, crostini, or toasts.

Zebra Swirlees

Cream 1 cup of softened butter with 2 cups of sugar. Add 1 cup of unsweetened cocoa and 4 eggs. Mix for several minutes. Add 1 cup of flour and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Pour into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish (or a larger dish, if needed).

In another bowl, mix three 8-ounce packages of softened cream cheese and 1 and 1/2 cups of sugar for 5 minutes on low. Add 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla and 1/2 cup of flour, mixing in on low. Pour the cream cheese mixture on top of the chocolate mixture in the baking dish. Use a knife to “draw” figure eights in the batter, swirling lightly. Smooth out the top and sprinkle with sugar. Top with 1/2 cup of sliced almonds. Bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cool. Slice into bars and refrigerate.

Quick Lemon Pound Cake

Combine 1 box of lemon cake mix with 1 small package of instant lemon pudding mix, 1 cup of water, 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, and 4 eggs. Mix on medium for 3-5 minutes. Pour into a greased and floured angel food cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-55 minutes, until the toothpick test says it’s done. Cool for 25 minutes, then invert onto a serving platter. Glaze with 1 cup of powdered sugar mixed with 2 Tablespoons of milk and a couple squeezes of lemon juice. Drizzle over cake. Serve with a side of sliced fresh strawberries.

Rhubarb Crisp

Place 4 cups of rinsed and chopped rhubarb into a greased 9x9-inch baking pan. Mix together 1 egg, 1 cup of sugar, and a dash of nutmeg. Pour over the rhubarb. Dot with 3 ounces of cut-up softened cream cheese. Mix together 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of chopped pecans, 4 Tablespoons of cold butter, and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Process or mash up the flour mixture. Pour on top of the rhubarb. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes until crispy. Serve with ice cream.

Summer Fashion Trends for Everyone!

Popular Summer Looks

As each season emerges, we are excited to see the new fashion trends on the horizon. Those of us who are interested in fashion always look for trends to update our wardrobe, but choosing what works for us can be tricky. Many new styles are more suitable for younger fashionistas. Others look great but don’t suit our climate or lifestyle. Most trends that are infinitely wearable are derived from past successes but with new twists and fabrics. Paying attention to the newest style trends gives you a forecast of what you will be seeing in the stores now or in the near future.

Color is always in the outlook for every new season, and color is especially important in spring and summer. We are eager to break out of our black and gray winter mode. A great way to incorporate some beautiful new bright tones into your wardrobe is to pair them with neutrals.

Pastels are always popular for spring and summer. This year, we can look forward to seeing buttermilk yellow, powder or petal pink, and—my personal favorite—sky blue. All these colors work well with many items already in your closet.

One of the most important neutrals that has been added to summer this year is Mocha Mousse (the Pantone 2025 Color of the Year). This is a lighter, taupe-influenced brown. Shoes and sandals in this color will be wildly popular and will look amazing with everything. A pair of camel-brown shoes will add a bit of chic sophistication to your outfit. Expect to be seeing this color of shoe for men and women alike, in sporty shoes, casual sandals, and dress shoes. Matching a camel brown shoe with a camel brown belt and handbag will certainly update any outfit.

White sportswear will really be important this year, with a focus on white on the bottom half. White skirts, white pants, white shorts, white jeans—any and all of these will freshen up your summer wardrobe.

Bright colors are always fun to add to your summer mix. Reds will be popular, along with raspberry tones. Red is a very personal color. Olive-toned skin looks best against deeper, bluetoned reds, while pinker-toned skin works best against more orange-toned reds. A bright golden yellow will be the color to wear this summer to brighten up your day and mood! Garden green will be another color to look for, embracing the primary color of nature. This hue works well with all your neutrals and has a “can’t resist” energy. Romance and masculinity will deliver a fresh twist in fashion this season. These seemingly polar opposites are both contradictory and complementary…wearing them together is very fashionable.

The romantic vibe will feature flowy fabrics, long skirts, loose-fitting tops, and soft layered dresses that feel bohème. The pale colors of summer, such as petal pink, would be beautiful in a softer silhouette. Add a camel brown shoe, belt, and bag to complete your look, and your petal pink outfit is instantly elevated.

The more tailored among us may love the suited look of a matching blazer and trousers. A blazer elevates any ensemble, but the matching trouser and blazer is particularly elegant. These versatile pieces can be dressed up or down depending on the pieces you choose to complement them. Create a casual look by pairing them with the fun, striped nautical tops we will be seeing this summer. Choose a more tailored top for a very put-together, professional vibe.

Experiment with mixing romantic and tailored styles together this summer. For example, pair a flowing skirt with a tailored blazer for a blend of boho chic and businesswoman.

Personal style is at the forefront of fashion, so be creative! Accessories are always a fun, low-stakes way to interject some artistic energy into your style. On point this year will be oversized statement sunglasses and feminine watches that will eventually overtake the smart watch. Oversized handbags, from totes to hobo bags, will also be on trend.

Fun-to-wear larger jewelry and stacked bangles are still hot from last summer. Gold is still the predominant metal, but silver is not out of the picture. Mixed metals will look vibrant and fun, too. Adding just a couple of these accessories will update your outfits and elevate your style.

The warmer weather is finally here, and we’re ready to dress for it! After a long, gray winter, let’s celebrate those blue skies, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the flowers and luscious green leaves of spring! Some updated looks, along with hope and love, can lead us into a wonderful year full of exuberance!

Christopher & Banks

One-of-A-Kind Women’s Clothing

When Dorothy arrives in Oz in The Wizard of Oz, she is struck by the beauty, style, and color. She says to her dog, Toto,“I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore!”The first time I walked into a Christopher & Banks store, I had a similar feeling, and I’m sure I’m not alone in this. From the moment you enter, you know you are not in a typical women’s clothing store. You are struck by the style, quality, and variety of the clothing as well as the friendly and knowledgeable sales associates. It is a one-of-a-kind shopping experience that everyone should enjoy.

Christopher & Banks opened its doors in 1956. The store’s apparel is designed in Minnesota, where the brand was born. As noted on the store’s website, the vision of founder Gil Braun was to design clothing and accessories for women who are “full of life and wisdom, confident in their beliefs, and in search of wardrobes to reflect their lifestyle.”

Things have changed over the years, but this commitment to customers has not. Their brand messaging says it all. “Because of you, we’ve grown. Because of you, we’re better than ever. We’re bringing you fresh new styles, improved quality, and an elevated shopping experience—all thanks to your support. Come see what’s new! #BetterBecauseOfYou”

The store prides itself on creating high-quality, original, affordable clothing that is trend-conscious and designed to flatter…and that has a consistent fit. All the prints and patterns are exclusive to Christopher & Banks, and their inclusive sizing fits women from size 4 to size 24, including petite sizing.

The clothing ranges from work to activewear, from special occasion to coats. The style is impeccable and has timeless appeal. In addition, the fabrics are easy-care and of high quality. I personally started shopping at this store in the 1980s, and I still wear some of the blazers, spring sweaters, and blouses that I purchased back then. Their styles were relevant then and are still relevant today! Fellow customer Myra of Yutan, Nebraska, agrees. “I love the wide variety of styles, colors, sizes, and jewelry. I continue to wear purchases I made in 2001.”

Another unique aspect of the clothing at Christopher & Banks is that they design their pieces with a women’s shape in mind—making sure to flatter all shapes and sizes. As a plus-size woman, I truly appreciate their efforts to ensure a good fit.

They are especially known for their Signature Slimming pant collection, which is designed with a flexible tummy-smoothing panel that creates a sleek silhouette and great fit. These pants are available in a variety of colors as well as denim washes and in lengths ranging from Bermuda shorts to skimmers to ankle-length and full-length pants.

One thing I really love about this brand is not about the clothing at all—it’s their sales staff. They are there to help you. They reach out to you. If you are not quite sure what you need, they engage you in conversation, making sure they understand your lifestyle and what you want from your clothing. They will show you how to mix and match styles. They take pride in their inventory and will help you find just the right items.

Debbie, who has been shopping at Christopher & Banks for 24 years, says, “The service is wonderful and hard to find anywhere else.” Judith, who has also shopped at the store for more than two decades, echoes Debbie’s sentiments. “I like it because you have real people helping you on the floor. The fit and design of their clothing is great!”

This spring season, Christopher & Banks is featuring clothing with comfort and style! May ushers in visions of coastal escape with hints of heritage Americana. Look for all shades of blue—the always-popular skimmer in a variety of denim washes, the blue linen wide-leg pants, and many seasonal brights in tops and jackets. From capris and skimmers to novelty tops in assorted prints, Christopher & Banks will be your destination for great fit and function this spring and summer.

The Omaha store has a seasoned sales team standing ready to offer great service to their customers. They pride themselves on providing a personalized styling experience that is hard to find in today’s market. You can call them at 402-819-4539 to schedule your own complimentary styling session or to host a private shopping event (for groups of 10 or more people).

Christopher & Banks is located at 13029 West Center Road, in Omaha, and is open seven days a week (Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.; Sunday, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) Shop anytime online at christopherandbanks.com.

It’s Mother’s Day!

Celebrating Mothers Throughout the World

When people are asked what person has been the most influential in their life, they often answer, “my mother.”On the second Sunday in May, we celebrate these incredible women who have impacted our lives with an annual celebration called Mother’s Day. I thought it might be interesting to learn about how Mother Day’s came to be and how people celebrate it throughout the world.

Historically, three powerful women are credited for pushing for a day to celebrate mothers. In 1858, a young Appalachian homemaker named Ann Jarvis organized what were known as Mothers’ Day Work Clubs. Their purpose was to educate mothers on ways to improve sanitation and avert deaths caused by disease-bearing insects and seepage of polluted water. For Ann, also known as Mother Jarvis, community improvement by mothers was only a beginning. Throughout the Civil War, she organized women’s brigades, asking her workers to care for all soldiers without regard for which side their own men had chosen.

In 1872, Boston poet, pacifist, and women’s suffragist Julia Ward Howe established a special day for mothers—and for peace—not long after the bloody Franco-Prussian War. While the war was still in progress, she wrote, she keenly felt the “cruel and unnecessary character of the contest.” And, she wondered, “Why do not the mothers of mankind interfere in these matters to prevent the waste of that human life of which they alone bear and know the cost?” Julia’s version of

Mother’s Day, which served as an occasion for advocating peace, was held successfully in Boston and elsewhere for several years.

In 1905, when Ann Jarvis died, her daughter, Anna, decided to memorialize her mother’s lifelong activism. She began a campaign that culminated in 1914 when Congress passed a Mother’s Day resolution and President Woodrow Wilson signed it. Anna Jarvis was only 12 years old in 1878 when she listened to her mother teach a Sunday school lesson on mothers in the Bible. “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother’s day,” her mother had said. “There are many days for men, but none for mothers.”

Mei-Ling Hopgood, author of How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm: And Other Adventures in Parenting said, “Most cultures celebrate mothers because they are traditionally the main caregiver, which comes with great responsibility.” In many American households, the second Sunday in May begins with breakfast in bed and a bouquet of flowers, followed by homemade cards and other tokens of affection for Mom.

Countries all over the world celebrate Mother’s Day in different ways. In India, Hindus honor the goddess Durga during the 10-day fall festival known as Durga Puja. The celebration is thought to date back to the 16th century and is considered both a religious ceremony and a time for family reunions. One story tells of Durga returning to her parents’ home to show off her own children. Families spend weeks preparing food, gathering gifts, and decorating their homes for the festival.

Mother’s Day is celebrated in Japan on the second Sunday in May, as in the United States. The traditional gift is carnations. Family members often tie notes to carnations and leave them on their mother’s doorstep.

In Ethiopia, the Antrosht festival is dedicated to moms. It is observed in early autumn, at the end of the rainy season. After the weather clears for good, family members from all over flock to their homes for a large meal and celebration. Daughters traditionally bring vegetables and cheese, while sons supply meat. Together, they prepare a meat hash and sing and perform dances that tell stories of family heroes.

In the United Kingdom, families celebrate moms on “Mothering Sunday,” which falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Back in the 1700s, the day was marked by young house servants returning home to spend time with their mothers. That custom evolved from an earlier one in which families who had moved away would return to the original church they attended. Today, the holiday remains grounded in religion, with many churches handing out daffodils for children to give to Mom. Traditionally, girls also bake a fruitcake for their mothers.

In 1920, the government of France began awarding medals to mothers of large families in gratitude for helping rebuild the population after so many lives were lost in World War I. After the Second World War, the government declared the last Sunday in May to be the Day of Mothers. The traditional gift is now a flower-shaped cake.

No matter how we celebrate, we are grateful to the mother figures in our lives, who give us the gifts of their wisdom, insight, and attention. Happy Mother’s Day!

Remodel Nebraska

Specializing in Sunrooms that Change Lives

The minute you begin talking with Jack Rediger, owner of Remodel Nebraska, you are struck by his passion and enthusiasm for his work. The company defines“remodel”as“to reconstruct; to improve or enhance.”They do many types of remodeling, but they specialize in the construction of sunrooms. According to Jack, these additions quite literally change people’s lives for the good.

“We recently had an older client who, because of age and physical limitations, could no longer garden and do yard work as she used to do,” Jack shares. “She missed getting out and just experiencing the color and majesty of her yard, and you could see depression was starting to sink in. We met with her and designed a wonderful sunroom, and she absolutely is a different person.”

Remodel Nebraska provides a free estimate and designs the addition with your family lifestyle in mind. “Many companies use kits or pre-packaged products,” Jack notes. “We design a space that is uniquely yours.”

Once the design is locked in, Jack’s teams handle everything—applying for a permit, purchasing materials, and the construction of the addition. “I have six crews. They are committed to excellence and take a great deal of pride in their work. We are experienced, licensed and insured, and committed to customer satisfaction.”

Jack’s family’s business is actually car sales; his grandfather, father, and brother have all run the family dealership in Milford, Nebraska. Jack, on the other hand, had visions of being an eye doctor and went to study at UNL. At school, he met a real estate developer, whose career intrigued him. “I began working in real estate and learning construction,” Jack recalls. “I even did sales and management training for a while, but a family member got ill, and I needed to travel less.” Someone showed Jack a sunroom and explained how much joy it brought them. He decided to give the industry a try. The results so far, 23 years and 2,000 sunrooms.

Remodel Nebraska offers a unique product with their all-season room. This space is comparable to an addition on the house. Typically, there is no wall or separation between the all-season room and the rest of the home. This space has floor-to-ceiling windows that flow with the rest of the house for an aesthetically pleasing addition. “We are the only company in this market to offer a custom-designed all-season room that is energy efficient enough to open the wall between the house and the sunroom,” Jack says. “It brings outdoor living into the house without worrying about the weather or temperature. It’s a real game-changer!”

The company also offers a three-season room. This addition features floor-to-ceiling windows with the option of doors to the outside. It is attached to the home like a porch

and can be enjoyed during most seasons.

Remodel Nebraska also offers decks, patio covers, windows, and more.

Seeing his customers’ happy faces and how a beautiful sunroom can change a lifestyle is truly rewarding, Jack says. “I have a client in Elkhorn who can now have a cup of coffee and experience the beauty and grandeur of the valley below…all without stepping outside.” These home extensions, Jack asserts, add value to the home and increase quality of life for the homeowners.

Jack and his team take the time to educate their clients on what is required for this type of project. “Pricing depends on the intricacies of the design, whether energy accommodations will be included, and other engineering needs,” Jack explains. Obtaining permits and materials can take up to 10 weeks. Once everything is in hand, the actual construction usually takes two weeks. The company typically has 50 to 60 jobs in the queue, so clients should schedule well in advance of when they plan to begin enjoying their new room.

Remodel Nebraska finds most of their clients through referrals from other satisfied clients. One client says, “I want to say how much we enjoy our sunroom. The way it has changed our home, and our lives, is amazing. We couldn’t image life without the space!” Another client marvels about the construction team. “Your attention to detail, your thought process on how to solve issues, your communication skills…I could go on and on. As a crew, your representation of Jack Rediger and Remodel Nebraska is outstanding. We are truly blessed to have been referred to Jack and his company.” Remodel Nebraska has been Omaha’s Choice and Best of Omaha for several consecutive years. They also continue to win the Presidents Award for Continued Excellence, from their manufacturer, which is a national award.

If you think your home could be improved with a sunroom addition, reach out to Remodel Nebraska! To get started on your free estimate, please call 402-999-4595 or submit a request at remodel-ne.com. Remodel Nebraska is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturdays by appointment.

Allergy and Asthma Breakthroughs

Time to Breathe Easier

Ah, spring! Flowers are blooming, birds are singing, and the world feels fresh and new. What’s that? You’re sneezing? Wheezing? Scratching your itchy, watery eyes? Well, you’re not alone. For people with asthma and seasonal allergies, spring offers a season-long battle against pollen, runny noses, and wheezy outdoor adventures. Fear not, allergy and asthma sufferers! Researchers are dedicated to improving your quality of life all year long with new ideas, education, and research with positive outcomes. Read on for healthy tips, the latest diagnostics, and the best treatments!

Allergies and asthma are connected and are on the rise. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, over 50 million Americans experience allergies each year and about 25 million have asthma, including 5.1 million children. The prevalence of asthma increases with age among children and is slightly more common in boys. About 8.1 percent of children in the United States have asthma, and it’s one of the leading causes of school absences and hospitalizations.

What does asthma have to do with allergies? A lot. Allergic asthma is one of the most common types of asthma, often triggered by allergens like pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. Immunity plays a role, too. Overreaction to allergens can lead to inflammation in the airways, making it tough to breathe. About 60 percent of people with asthma also have allergies. If you’re sneezing one moment and gasping for air the next, welcome to the masses.

Allergies don’t cause asthma, but they commonly trigger asthma symptoms. Although people of all ages can develop allergies or asthma later in life, asthma is most common in early childhood and increases throughout adulthood. We can mostly blame allergens for that.

What exactly is an allergen? The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America describes them this way: “Allergens are substances that cause an allergic reaction. They can enter the body by being breathed in, swallowed, touched, or injected. They cause an allergic reaction because your body thinks they are harmful. Your immune system responds by releasing an antibody called immunoglobulin (or IgE). Too much IgE can cause inflammation of the airways in your lungs. This can make it harder to breathe and can trigger an asthma flare-up. A similar process happens in the nose and sinus areas with allergic rhinitis (also called ‘hay fever’).”

Each season brings its own prominent allergen. From March through May, the growth of spring stirs up tree pollen. Grass pollen is the main culprit in the summer, and ragweed is prominent in the fall.

Sadly, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook during the winter. Things like mold, dust mites, and pet dander are especially problematic during times when we’re indoors a lot. Dust, soap irritants, specific fabrics, and even stress can trigger eczema and allergic dermatitis at any time of the year. Of course, climate, location, and specific sensitivities drive allergies, as well. Symptoms can include shortness of breath, cough, chest tightness, wheezing, watery eyes, and itching. Physical activity can become challenging amid these physical distractions.

Not all allergies are respiratory. Insect stings from bees, wasps, and fire ants are common too. Some people are sensitive to latex, fragrances, and medications like penicillin or aspirin. Many have strong allergic reactions to certain foods, like nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, or fish.

Food allergies are on the rise in people of all ages, but the CDC notes that about 50 percent more children have food allergies today than compared to the 1990s. Studies show that about one in 13 children and one in three adults in the United States has a food allergy. The trend is more prevalent in young children, with foods like peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, and processed foods that alter gut bacteria.

An idea known as the hygiene hypothesis posits that we’re too clean (that is, anti-bacterial overuse), causing immune systems to overact to things like harmless proteins. Other suggested causes for the uptick in allergies include increased exposure to allergens in early childhood, increased antibiotics in food, and vitamin D deficiency.

Early diagnosis shows that the allergy struggle begins in some kids before they even learn to walk (as early as six months). Pediatricians often wait until a child is at least one to two years old before sending them through a barrage of allergy tests. Asthma is trickier to diagnose early, though coughing and shortness of breath can start in infancy. Most docs agree to wait until age three to five years before making an asthma diagnosis.

Parents may wonder how they can help prevent food allergies in infants and toddlers. The latest guidelines encourage an early introduction of allergenic foods, instead of avoiding those foods. For example, a recent LEAP (Learning Early About Peanut Allergy) study found that introducing peanut products as early as four to six months of age might significantly reduce peanut allergies. The same applies for common allergens like eggs and milk. Regular exposure helps build tolerance. Breastfeeding also helps build a strong immune system. If you have concerns about family history, set up a consultation with a pediatrician for guidance.

If you’re wondering whether allergies and asthma are hereditary, the answer is yes. There’s up to a 95 percent chance of inheriting asthma through the family tree; it’s 91 percent for allergies like hay fever. Even though there’s a strong genetic component to both allergies and asthma, it’s best to put it all in perspective. The environment plays a huge role, with exposure to pollution, allergens, and infections that can worsen existing asthma and allergies.

Don’t lose hope! There’s good news among the bad. Allergies and asthma are treatable! For asthma sufferers, technology helps make the latest in diagnostics and treatment easier. One newer diagnostic, FeNO testing, measures exhaled nitric oxide to assess airway inflammation. Monitoring asthma helps identify flare-ups, and FeNO is noninvasive and painless.

There’s also the smart inhaler, a Bluetooth-enabled device that tracks inhaler use with feedback. In addition, biologic therapies include injectable treatments that target specific immune pathways to reduce severe asthma attacks. If in doubt, set a virtual appointment via telemedicine for quick access, or make an in-person appointment with a pulmonologist or board-certified allergist.

Respiratory allergies like hay fever have traditionally been treated with the tried-and-true subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT), around since the early 1900s. This series of shots contains the same allergens that cause all the wheezing and sneezing in the first place, but they build up immunity gradually. This type of treatment is effective for three to five years. Patients who prefer a needle-free option can consider sublingual immunotherapy, in which allergy drops or tablets are placed under the tongue.

While immunotherapy has been around for decades, there are new advancements that make life easier. For example, scientists are exploring the mRNA allergy vaccines for help training the immune system to tolerate things like peanut sensitivities. The FDA also recently approved Palforzia as an oral treatment for peanut allergies.

Breakthroughs in allergy vaccines are making life easier for people with hay fever and food allergies. New in 2025,

Xolair (omalizumab) is an injectable approved to help reduce allergic reactions by targeting the allergy-causing antibody. New trials for other promising drugs like Cibinqo (abrocitinib) and Dupixent (dupilumab) to treat eczema, asthma, and food allergies are on the horizon! Check in with your otolaryngologist (ENT), allergist, or immunologist for practical advice and safety in regard to these new and exciting medicines.

Natural remedies can help control allergies and asthma, too. Common sense approaches like staying hydrated are crucial to avoid histamine production. A clean home environment is important to reduce allergens. Try natural cleaning solutions like baking soda or vinegar, and buy hypoallergenic covers for pillows and mattresses. Nasal irrigation like a neti pot or nasal spray helps flush out allergens and mucus. But nothing helps quite as much as avoiding the allergens that trigger you!

Talk to your dietician for great diet ideas like quercetin-rich fruits and veggies that help alleviate symptoms. Foods that are rich in vitamin C, like berries and citrus fruits, help boost immunities and reduce histamine. Probiotics, turmeric, and other supplements with anti-inflammatory properties are touted to help asthma. Don’t forget about breathing techniques for lung function, steam therapy to clear out mucus, yoga and meditation to reduce stress, and regular exercise! Finally, acupuncture may help address both allergies and asthma.

While allergies and asthma can be frustrating, there’s never been a better time to manage them. With new treatments, early diagnosis, and natural remedies, relief is in reach. Breathe easy! Clearer skies and clearer sinuses are within reach.

OsteoStrong Omaha Regency Building Bone Health

OsteoStrong Omaha Regency helps members maintain a strong skeletal system, which is particularly important for people with osteoporosis or osteopenia, a medical condition where bones become brittle or fragile. The system uses specialized equipment to apply osteogenic loading, a type of exercise that stimulates bone growth in a brief, low-impact but high-intensity weekly session.

Dave Jahn, owner and certified coach at the Regency location, asserts that OsteoStrong is unique among exercises. An article in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism agrees, writing, “OsteoStrong improved bone mineral density of the lumbar spine in women with osteoporosis.” The journal also recognizes improvement in hip and neck, all with osteogenesis (the development of bone) as the goal.

“OsteoStrong has been around for 12 years,” says Dave. “We currently have 206 locations in 13 different countries.” At the Regency location, Dave notes, they work with members who are very deconditioned. “One member, for example, couldn’t carry her laundry basket from one room to the next because she used a walker to get around,” Dave reports. “After about four months of coming to see us, she doesn’t have to use her walker anymore, and she can carry her laundry basket from room to room. OsteoStrong is changing the quality of people’s lives.”

Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones and increases the risk of fractures, Dave explains. Losing bone mass is a part of aging, and it begins sooner than you may think—people generally reach their peak bone mass by age 30. “We’re able to help people increase their bone density, muscular strength, and balance, as well as reducing pain without medication.” That said, Dave recommends following your doctor’s advice regarding medications. OsteoStrong is an amazing program, “but your bones might need certain ingredients to repair themselves quicker.” Dave recommends supplements such as calcium, vitamin K2, vitamin D, and collagen.

OsteoStrong works to improve bone density and overall health with specific weight-bearing machines and specialized equipment for safe exercise. Dave and his team of trained coaches guide each member individually at every workout, all the way through the process. This level of supervision makes the protocol not only more effective but also safer. “The strength training we do is different from going to the gym because it’s done in a safer environment…in a non-intimidating, family atmosphere.”

“What we do not only improves osteoporosis, osteopenia, and bone density,” Dave continues. “It also increases strength overall by increasing the myofibrils in our muscles. One of the toughest things is that OsteoStrong is hard to explain because it seems too easy. It seems too good to be true because a session literally takes 10 to15 minutes once a week!”

Members at OsteoStrong Omaha Regency range in age from 18 to 91, and Dave loves to hear from them about all the things they can do now that they couldn’t do before…at least, not without chronic pain or the worry that a fall might result in a fracture or worse. One member, Kelley, says that after two months of weekly visits to OsteoStrong, the chronic hip pain she’d been enduring for 15 years has disappeared. She used to alternate between chiropractic care and massage sessions every other week; now, she no longer needs either on a regular basis.

“Members improve their health and well-being in a way they couldn’t before,” Dave says. He’s thrilled by the shift he sees in American medicine toward prevention. “We’re not as proactive as other countries,” he says. “Many people here only go to the doctor when there’s something wrong.” Of course, he notes, you should get medical care when something is wrong, but he encourages us to think of health in a more preventative way. “In other parts of the world, people do everything they can to prevent getting to the point where they have to go to the doctor.

There’s been a bit of a paradigm shift within the United States. We’re starting to see a shift toward the preventative side of things. That’s exciting!”

Dave is happy to be a part of this increasing focus on wellness and prevention. During the initial consultation and throughout the OsteoStrong program, he focuses on the four pillars of good bone and muscle health—exercise, lifestyle factors, medical issues, and nutrition. “These are some of the things we talk about with our members when they come in to do the exercise side of things,” he says. “We strive to educate our members enough to inspire a transformation. If we don’t inspire change, then we’re not doing our job. We’re helping people reach optimal health!”

OsteoStrong Omaha Regency is located at 10050 Regency Circle, Suite 125. You can reach them at 531-867-3013 or omaharegency@osteostrong.me. To learn more about the process and benefits of OsteoStrong, visit osteostrong.me.

A Day at the Spa

The Perfect Mother’s Day Treat

Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and we want to let the special women in our lives know how much we love and appreciate them. A great way to express our gratitude for these amazing ladies is to treat them to a day of head-to-toe pampering, relaxation, and rejuvenation. A day spa experience provides exactly that.

Most spas offer a full menu of body treatments, facials, and massages. Other services, such as manicures, pedicures, waxing, and even hairstyling and makeup application are standard at many facilities. Package options can be customized for individual preferences. Some spas even offer food and drink. Can you say massage and merlot, or pedicure and paella? You could even make it a mother-daughter experience and treat yourself, as well. It’s a great bonding opportunity. You can have wonderful conversations without worrying about the kids or spouses interrupting.

There’s nothing better than a good massage to relax tense muscles and break up those tight knots. There are a variety of massage techniques that focus on certain areas and provide specific results. The Swedish massage is a popular choice. It’s a great all-over massage that can be slow and gentle or more forceful and invigorating.

In contrast, a deep tissue massage involves applying strong, constant pressure to deeper tissue and muscle structure. This is a good option for chronic muscle pain. For a

hot stone massage, the therapist places heated stones along the spine or in the palm of your hand. The warmth from the stones helps relax tight muscles.

Want a body detox or all-over exfoliation and hydration? Consider a body wrap. A detox wrap draws impurities out of your body. First, a body mask containing mud, clay, algae, or seaweed is applied. Next, you’re wrapped in plastic or cloth and covered with a blanket. The mask stimulates circulation, and the ensuing sweating helps rid the body of toxins. After 20 minutes, you jump into the shower to rinse off the mask.

A relaxing body scrub is also a great way to exfoliate. A massage therapist rubs the skin with a blend of sea salt oils and aromatics. This is followed by a shower to rinse off those dead skin cells and a good moisturizer for hydration. Your skin will appear smoother, softer, and brighter.

A hydrating body wrap uses a rich cream or gel to penetrate the skin following an exfoliating body scrub. While your skin soaks up the moisture, you’re relaxing, all wrapped up in a warm towel. In addition to detoxing and hydrating,

“Our mission is to offer small- to medium-sized businesses an affordable way to reach women, ages 25 to 64 plus, in the middle to upper income level. This demographic group makes or influences over 85% of all buying decisions in this country.”

Helping Children in Need Sleep Better.

All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. Across the US, too many boys and girls go without a bed—or even a pillow—to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors. This can affect their happiness and health. That’s where Sleep in Heavenly Peace comes in. We’re a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling, and delivering handbuilt bunk beds to children and families in need.

different types of body wraps can also tone and tighten or temporarily boost metabolism.

A facial treatment is a key component of any spa day. Basic facials steam and cleanse the pores. Targeted anti-aging facials use alpha-hydroxy creams to help skin look smooth and fresh. An antioxidant facial utilizes vitamin A, vitamin E, and beta-carotene to remove pollutants. No matter which option you choose, a facial will cleanse, moisturize, tighten, and hydrate your skin for a smoother, healthier-looking complexion.

Hair removal treatments can be incorporated into your day spa experience. Take advantage of a hot wax or laser treatment. Waxing removes unwanted hair at the root, leaving a smooth skin surface and slowing the regrowth process. Laser treatments destroy the hair follicle, preventing regrowth.

If your eyebrows conjure images of Eugene Levy, consider adding eyebrow threading to the package. Threading is an ancient practice that removes unwanted hairs by pulling them out at the follicle. It’s less painful than tweezing, and the regrowth process is much slower.

After you’ve been exfoliated, massaged, and smoothed, it may be time for a little nourishment. Many spas offer the option of adding a light lunch to the package, typically served in a relaxing atmosphere such as a sunroom filled with plants, a soothing waterfall, and soft music.

Ater some sustenance, it’s time to focus on the finishing touches like makeup and nails. A trained aesthetician will select shades and colors that complement your skin tone. They will educate you on application tips so you’ll be able to achieve the same great look at home. Last but not least, sit back and relax with a beverage while a nail tech trims, files, and polishes your nails with the color of your choice.

A day at the spa makes you feel like a new woman. It also provides health benefits, including reducing stress, improving mood and sleep quality, and boosting self-esteem…not to mention strengthening your relationship with the woman you’re celebrating! What a great Mother’s Day gift for that special woman who has always been there for you.

Celebrate Summer

Create an Outdoor Oasis

The first warm days of springtime bring sunshine, blue skies, and the promise of summer bliss.

Whether you love to lounge by the pool, dine alfresco, or simply soak up the sun, one thing is for sure: Summertime fun begins with a great outdoor space! It’s never too early to start planning. Whether you’re working with a courtyard, a rooftop patio, or a sprawling back yard, you can transform your outdoor living space into an oasis.

As with their growing demand for improved and expanded interior rooms, homeowners are calling upon their outdoor spaces to deliver more than ever before. Outdoor spaces are doubling as second living rooms curated to provide functionality without sacrificing aesthetics. Blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living is a huge trend that continues to grow. Pair sumptuous furnishings with coordinated accessories for a beautifully cohesive flow and a seamless transition between indoors and out.

Creating a great outdoor space begins with furnishings that provide comfort, style, and durability. With so many options on the market, lounging around outdoors has never looked so good! Bask in the beauty of the outdoors by relaxing on an upholstered sofa. Outdoor sofas are as stylish and inviting as any sofa you’ll find indoors and are just as comfortable. Elevate your outdoor style with clean lines and classic framing and customize with performance fabrics that are color-fast, stain-resistant, and UV-protected.

Consider the possibilities of personalized design advice —on your terms.

Modern resort-inspired furniture collections offer a mix of seating options, including lounge chairs and daybeds that are constructed with materials designed to withstand the elements. Choose from beautiful and classic teak to all-weather woven wicker. For a fresh take, opt for modern, sleek-lined aluminum furnishings built to stand the test of time.

Dining alfresco is one of summer’s greatest joys! Whether you’re hosting a crowd or dining for two, you’ll need a great table to set the stage. Consider factors such as size, material, and seating capacity to determine the best fit for your lifestyle and needs. Outdoor dining and living collection cushions, covered in durable stain and fade-resistant fabrics, stand up beautifully to the elements. Be sure to add fitted furniture protective covers to preserve your investment.

The best outdoor spaces seamlessly transform from daytime fun into evening magic. If you love the romance of sitting next to a fire after dinner, you’ll love a fire table. A natural gas or propane fire table is a low-maintenance

and beautiful addition to any deck or patio. Usher in the evening by gathering around a fabulous fire table and indulge in the ambience while enjoying a boost of warmth when the sun sets.

Looking for a way to extend the outdoor season? Keep the outdoor fun going without sacrificing comfort by investing in a patio heater. Propane and gas heaters provide more heat, but an electric model can be ideal for compact spaces. Be sure to consider your own needs when you make your selection.

If you want an outdoor oasis but only have a small space to work with, don’t feel hemmed in by the tight square footage! A little imagination can go a long way in creating a small but charming space. It’s all about scale! Pared-down furnishings, a bevy of string lights, and a cozy fire feature will make even the most petite space so inviting that you may never want to go back indoors.

A backyard with epic proportions, on the other hand, is the perfect invitation to create multiple backyard experiences. If you have the room, consider an outdoor kitchen, a dining area, and a grand stone fire pit for after-dinner gatherings and conversation.

Creating a safe and healthy outdoor space means providing protection from harmful UV rays and excessive heat. Shading devices range from classic umbrellas to stylish shade sails (that is, large durable fabric panels that can be suspended between posts to provide shade). More permanent shaded structures include freestanding pergolas with a semi-open roof. These are often covered with plants or fabric. Pergolas offer partial shade and lend a sense of elegance to your patio.

Outdoor solar screen and shades are ideal for verandas or decks where you want the advantages of shade without losing the view. Constructed with durable UV materials and controlled with a cord or motorized technology, these lowprofile shades simply disappear when rolled up.

Once you decide on the perfect outdoor furnishings and accessories, be sure to order your items promptly. Ongoing supply chain issues can result in delayed deliveries. Avoid disappointment and order early. The only thing left to add for a fabulous outdoor summer experience is sunscreen!

When You Gotta Go, You Gotta Go

How Often is Too Often?

We might laugh at the memes—jokes about moms crossing their legs before sneezing or playful posts about scouting out the nearest restroom at every store. Incontinence is everywhere in pop culture, from lighthearted social media posts to discreet product commercials, yet it remains an uncomfortable topic. Approximately 25 million Americans have urinary incontinence, four fifths of them women. If so many people experience it, why does discussing it still feel awkward or even shameful?

Urinary incontinence is simply the loss of bladder control. It is a symptom, not a disease, and the severity varies from occasional leaks to an immediate urge to urinate that a person cannot hold or stop. Many people accept it as an inevitable part of aging and believe they can do nothing besides purchase products to manage the symptoms. However, when someone is ready to stop accepting incontinence as a way of life, it becomes an opportunity for an open discussion with a healthcare provider.

For women, incontinence can be triggered by pregnancy, childbirth, aging, or menopause. For men, common causes include an enlarged prostate, prostate cancer, or an obstruction. In both men and women, additional risk factors include being overweight, weakened muscles due to aging, smoking, family history, diabetes, and other diseases.

A healthcare provider will begin by considering the most common causes and ruling them out. A urinary tract infection or constipation can be the culprit. They will also determine the type of incontinence the patient is dealing with, as there are different forms.

Stress incontinence occurs when pressure is placed on the bladder, causing leaks while laughing, coughing, or sneezing. Urge incontinence involves a sudden, intense need to urinate that cannot be controlled. Overflow incontinence happens when the bladder does not completely empty, leading to frequent dribbling of urine. Functional incontinence results from physical or mental conditions that prevent a person from getting to the bathroom in time.

Diet, beverages, and medications can also affect bladder control. A provider will often evaluate what a patient consumes; alcohol, caffeine, carbonated drinks, artificial sweeteners, chocolate, and spicy foods can irritate the bladder. Many people are surprised to learn that some medications, including those for high blood pressure, act as diuretics, increasing the need to urinate.

Once a healthcare provider determines the type of incontinence, they will create a treatment plan. If a medical issue such as a urinary tract infection is causing the problem, that will be treated first. Most doctors start with the least invasive treatments before considering more advanced options.

Many types of doctors, including primary care physicians and gynecologists, can diagnose and treat incontinence. Some patients may be referred to a urologist (a doctor specializing in the urinary system). Women may also see a urogynecologist, who has specialized training in female urinary care.

Treatment for incontinence often begins with bladder training techniques. This may involve delaying urination or urinating on a schedule. For overflow incontinence, a method called double voiding can help. In this method, a person goes to the bathroom a second time shortly after the first to ensure the bladder is empty. Other strategies include adjusting diet, reducing bladder irritants, and planning scheduled bathroom trips.

Pelvic floor muscle therapy is commonly recommended to strengthen the muscles that control urination. Some patients work with a physical therapist to ensure they are targeting the correct muscles. In certain cases, electrodes stimulate and strengthen these muscles, especially if a patient struggles to engage them properly. Medications are available to help manage incontinence. For women, medical devices can be inserted daily to prevent leaks.

Newer treatments include interventional therapies such as Botox injections and nerve stimulators implanted under the skin to help regulate bladder function. Surgery is the best option for some individuals. Laser surgery is one of the latest advancements, offering immediate improvement with little to no downtime. This type of procedure can often provide benefits beyond bladder control, making it an option that menopausal women may consider to address multiple concerns in a single treatment.

Understanding the different types and causes of incontinence can also benefit individuals who do not currently experience the condition. Preventive measures can help lower the chances of developing incontinence later in life. Maintaining a healthy weight, limiting caffeine intake, avoiding smoking, and performing exercises that strengthen pelvic floor muscles can be beneficial. Increasing fiber intake may also help prevent constipation, which can contribute to bladder issues.

If you struggle with incontinence, know that you are not alone. There is no need to accept it as an unavoidable part of life. Stop worrying about the nearest restroom! Speak with a doctor, explore your options, and take control.

Good Rollicking Fun

What is a smash party? Frankly, it is an experience like no other. At Omaha’s local iSmash franchise, partygoers can participate in paint splatter rooms, smash sessions, and even axe throwing in a safe and exciting environment. Kids and adults alike love these activities because they offer a unique and memorable experience for all. It’s not your typical party!

Keeping safety as their first priority, iSmash gives everyone a positive and fun experience that will be truly unforgettable. A splatter paint party can appeal to groups of all ages. Imagine how creative kids (or adults) could get while wearing protective gear and squirting paint all over their friends, relatives, or even colleagues!

Let loose your inner artist in a room lit with black lights. iSmash provides the protective gear, the paint, the squirt bottles, and the canvas to hold your best abstract expressionist work. And you can get the entire experience on video to commemorate the occasion! iSmash also offers a private party room for before or after your splatter session. You can bring in your own food if you wish. They also have a partnership with Valentino’s and can order pizza for your party.

Smash sessions are for everyone eight years and older who would like to blow off a little steam. (That’s all of us, right?) We’ve all had the urge to just smash something at one time or another. Imagine being able to do this in a mess-free and totally safe environment…and you don’t even have to pick anything up after your rage session!

Ryan credits his wonderful staff with maintaining the excitement that iSmash inspires while promoting that friendly feeling toward people with whom you share an experience. You can even bring your own stuff to smash. That’s right! The good folks at iSmash will be more than happy to provide stuff to smash, but if you want to take out your feelings on your own breakables, bring them along! This is the place to do it.

The axe throwing activity is fairly self-explanatory, but what a fun and wild challenge! You don’t have to be with a group to enjoy axe throwing, but feel free to bring a group and turn it into a competitive experience.

iSmash is a unique and interesting choice for many different events, including holiday parties, graduation parties, club meetings, bachelor or bachelorette parties, birthday parties, family reunions, or just a Friday night. And the fun doesn’t stop with family and friends—how about a smash session or splatter party to bring your work team together? Ryan is originally from Arkansas but moved to Nebraska at 12 years of age. He says that his grandfather was a big influence in both his work life and his personal life. Ryan’s grandpa grew up during the Great Depression and was no stranger to diligence and hard work. His grandfather instilled in Ryan that spirit of dedication to achieving goals, teaching Ryan how to stretch himself beyond what he thought his limits were. With his grandfather’s great example, Ryan developed the discipline to work hard and overcome challenges while being earnest and engaged in his work.

This discipline came into play when Ryan decided to start his own business with iSmash in Omaha. If you’re starting a business, Ryan advises, don’t expect to succeed right away. “Be very patient and be prepared to put in long hours in order to make your business a true success.” For a while, he says, you’ll need to give all your attention to building your business. And if the frustrations you encounter along the way give rise to the need to blow off some steam, you know where to go!

Living in Place

Accessible, Safe, Functional Homes

More people than ever are building homes that are accessible to everyone, regardless of age or physical challenges. Existing homes are being modified with a similar aim in mind. We think of seniors needing adaptations as they age, but an estimated 26 million Americans accommodate family members of all ages with cognitive or physical challenges.

As demand grows, professionals are acquiring expertise in designing and building accessible homes. Some builders and contractors specialize in modification of existing homes to facilitate what is known as living in place.

Safety issues and elimination of barriers are high priorities. An accessible home includes, at minimum, a no-step entry and a bedroom and full bath on ground level. Hallways are wide enough for a walker or wheelchair.

Training and certification for professionals is offered by the Living in Place Institute. Designers, builders, lighting specialists, contractors, and real estate agents are among the Certified Living in Place Professionals (CLIPP). Medical providers such as occupational or physical therapists, physicians, and nurses are earning certification, as well.

In addition, the Living in Place Institute certifies Home and Accessibility Trade Specialists (HATS). Training includes the latest developments in features to enhance quality of life. Products with superior standards are certified to provide accessible, secure, beautiful living environments.

Home modifications might include grab bars, adaptable kitchen and bathroom cabinets, additional lighting, accessible

appliances, lifts, or smart technology. Safety is a prominent consideration, with an emphasis on avoiding falls.

Those with physical challenges can be safer and more independent with technology such as health monitors, video doorbells, or emergency alert devices. Voice-activated technology can control appliances, lights, thermostats, or door locks. Smart TVs add enjoyment and cognitive stimulation.

For seniors, staying in one’s home is often a top priority. In fact, upwards of 70 or 80 percent hope to remain in their homes. They prefer the comfort of familiar surroundings and the freedom it affords. Keeping a pet and interacting with neighbors and friends gives them a sense of well-being. It may also be less expensive than an assisted living facility. Living in place professionals can assess a person’s needs and provide modifications to ensure a healthier, more positive experience.

In-home care services are a boon for those living in place, if only a moderate amount of care is needed. However, if the extent of home care is considerable (average rate, $24 per hour) it may exceed the cost of assisted living. Consider all the expenses, such as home maintenance, insurance, real estate tax, utilities, and lawn care when weighing whether to remain at home.

When continuing to live at home is not feasible, a facility in one’s community may provide excellent continuing care for living in place. One such facility near me offers independent living apartments for those who are currently able to manage on their own. When the need arises, a resident may move to assisted living within the same complex. Should skilled nursing be required, this is also available on the same campus. Residents enjoy accessibility and safety, plus important social involvement.

Such facilities offer amenities like a fitness center, hobby clubs, hair salon, and a small convenience store on the premises. Transportation is provided for shopping or medical appointments. Many have on-site libraries and movie theaters. Attractive indoor gathering spaces as well as nicely landscaped outdoor environments offer a variety of options for interaction with other residents. Restaurant style dining is a bonus.

When considering a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), arrange for a tour. Ask about such things as costs, staff to resident ratios, whether meals are flexible, and if a nurse is always on call. Ask to see an activity calendar and visit an actual apartment rather than looking at floor plans.

Are laundry and housekeeping included? What security is provided? If the facility has multiple levels, how many elevators are available? Remaining in one’s community or neighborhood is important for many seniors. Look for a good fit with the prospective resident’s personality and interests.

Cost is a key factor, and facilities have a variety of criteria for determining how residents are charged. Most require an initial fee. It might be a few hundred dollars or as much as several thousand. The initial fee may be partially refundable or nonrefundable.

Charges for assisted living arrangements are often (but not always) based on the level of care that a resident needs. One might need a minimum of assistance, perhaps just medication reminders and help with bathing. Others may require help when transferring from bed to chair, with dressing, or with toileting.

Whether living in place at home or in a continuing care community, the options are nearly limitless!

Enagic International Enhance Health and Hydration With Kangen Water

Health and wellness…what do these words really mean?

Health is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It’s a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being; a focus on the presence of vitality. Wellness is an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence. Wellness can encompass multiple dimensions, including emotional, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual, and occupational well-being.

Well, that sounds like something we all want—to be healthy and to be well. But the concept of health and wellness can be somewhat elusive when going about our dayto-day lives. One thing that we’ve all learned is that proper hydration is vital for health and wellness. But did you know that the type of water you drink can also make a difference?

Enagic International Distributors helps with that by offering the Kangen water ionization system. Teddi Remer and her husband, David, found out about this device when Teddi faced some extremely serious health issues. Teddi had her own business at the time, but her health became so precarious that she had to close down her business and make an all-out effort to get her health back.

Through word of mouth, Teddi and David heard about Kangen water and went for it. Kangen water helps prevent free radicals in the human body, and Teddi knew that was one way to attain better health and wellness. She felt so much better after drinking the water that she and David, a chemist, decided to become distributors of the machine.

What does the Kangen water system do to the water, and how does it help the body? The water runs through multiple titanium plates, which strips it of electrons, thereby highly concentrating the antioxidant power of the water. The water is now electron-deficient. Many of the chemicals that people ingest, from plastic water bottles, food dyes, and preservatives, release free radicals. This term may be familiar to you if you’ve used anti-aging products. Free radicals are what we want to avoid.

As Teddi explains, the electron-deficient Kangen water literally searches for random wandering electrons in the body…it will seek them out until it finds them. These positively charged ions will travel throughout the entire body like a strong magnet, naturally attracting and bonding with any free radicals they find.

That is a lot to take in, so let’s break it down a little more. Kangen water is more easily absorbed by the body due to its micro-clustering structure—this leads to enhanced hydration. The alkaline pH and the great taste make it more palatable, encouraging greater water intake...which also leads to enhanced hydration. Free radicals in the body are linked to various health and aging issues. Kangen water has antioxidant

properties that neutralize these free radicals. That’s how Kangen water helps with both health and wellness!

“It is noteworthy that the different strengths of Kangen water can do some pretty amazing things,” Teddi says. “The 6.0 pH water from the machine can be used as a facial toner and a hair conditioner. 7.0 pH can be used for baby formula, and 8.5 to 9.5 is the optimum pH for drinking water and detoxing the body. 11.5 pH is a powerful degreaser and is a wonderful way to soak your vegetables. You can literally see the pesticides and toxins coming out of the vegetables as they are soaked.”

Enagic International also offers a machine that provides unchlorinated, pure mineral water. The device can be hooked up to your shower or tub to provide unchlorinated, completely pure water. As Teddi reminds me, our skin is our biggest organ, and we need to take care of it and watch what we let into our bodies through the water we drink. This machine is called the Anespa DX, and I must say it sounds delightful. Who doesn’t want soft, beautiful skin?

The Kangen water ionization system has made such a difference in Teddi’s health that she is delighted to share her message with others. Enagic International has been the leader in manufacturing water ionization systems that transform regular tap water into pure, healthy, electrolytically reduced, hydrogen-rich drinking water. Teddi fell in love with the product and decided to join the company via direct sales.

Enagic International has global offices in 27 countries and has been in business for over five decades. Enagic Kangen water systems merge superior Japanese craftsmanship with the latest scientific research and technology. Catered Investment Choices

What’s on the Menu?

Seventy-three percent of the American workforce has access to a 401(k) plan. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are 70 million active 401(k) participants and over 7,700 plans. The total value of these plans is $10 trillion. And while 401(k) retirement plans are growing at an exponential rate, the percentage of workers covered by a traditional pension plan has dropped below three percent. This shift of control from the employer to the employee provides workers with more control over their quality of life during their golden years.

As I reflect on these numbers, the first thing that comes to mind is infamous 19th-century American bank robber Willie Sutton. When asked by a reporter why he robbed banks, Willie supposedly said, “Because that’s where the money is!” Willie is not alone in this sentiment. The avaricious mavens of Wall Street salivate when they see these numbers. And, while there has been a move from total employer control to partial employee control, there has also been a seismic shift in the cost of managing retirement plans.

There are multiple moving parts to a 401(k) plan, along with multiple revenue-generating points. The process begins with an employer deciding to offer a 401(k) plan as part of their benefits package. In some states, business owners can choose whether or not to offer this employee benefit. In other states, business owners are required to offer their employees a 401(k) plan, leaving them no choice in the matter. A few states also have mandatory employee participation requirements.

The next step is for the business owner to hire a plan administrator. The plan administrator enrolls the employees, monitors the payroll deductions, provides participants with statements, and makes sure the plan complies with the federal regulations.

Two decades ago, there were multiple companies whose only business was plan administration. Today, the majority of plan administration is handled by discount/internet brokerage firms. They serve as both custodian and trading platform for the rapidly growing number of independent wealth management firms who have replaced the Wall Street legacy firms as plan administrators.

Next, the employer hires a licensed stock broker to curate a menu of mutual funds for the employees to choose from. These menus typically include between six and 12 mutual funds. Under the wealth management business model, the wealth planner has a securities license that allows them to prepare the mutual fund menu.

The broker preparing the menu receives a portion of the fees charged by the mutual funds on the menu. This presents the possibility of a conflict of interest because mutual fund fees range anywhere from 0.01 percent to 2.25 percent. Under this arrangement, the broker establishes their own salary.

In 2015, a group of employees at a California utility company filed a class action suit against their employer, claiming that their retirement plan only offered “imprudent” funds because the funds in their investment menu carried greater-than-average management fees. Low-cost index funds were not an option. The case went all the way to the United States Supreme Court, which ruled that the employer had

failed in their fiduciary obligation by providing employees with only “expensive” options.

The Justices concluded that it was the responsibility of the employer to ensure that the plan’s funds were appropriate because the employer was the one who hired the broker to curate the investment menu. The court ordered the employer to compensate the employees for the amount of excess fees they had paid. In this case, the dollar amount of the employees’ compensation exceeded $12 million.

It has taken a decade, thousands of lawsuits, and hundreds of millions of dollars in legal fees to come up with a definition of what constitutes an “appropriate” 401(k) investment menu. In most recent decisions, the courts have ruled that the inclusion of low-cost index funds is a necessary requirement to meet an employer’s fiduciary obligation.

Unfortunately, the majority of American workers are employed by companies too small to attract third-party assistance in enforcing the mutual fund menu regulations. Astute employers recognize the financial value of an engaged workforce, and many studies have demonstrated that a robust 401(k) plan is one tool that can be used to achieve employee engagement. In many cases, employers embrace them enthusiastically.

Employees have both an obligation and a motivation to review their 401(k) fund menu. After all, it’s their money. How they invest their money today will affect their quality of life in their golden years, so they should make sure their 401(k) investment menu is appropriate.

This reminds me of the line from the Capital One commercial: “What’s in your wallet?” Or, in this case, “What’s on your 401(k) investment menu?” If you go to the time and trouble to review your plan offerings, you are doing a favor not only to yourself but also to your fellow employees.

Clematis

The Undisputed Queen of the Climbers

Clematis is a very hardy climbing perennial that has earned its name as queen of the climbers. We have all seen gorgeous, dynamic, colored flowers scrambling and draping over fences, pergolas, arches, and most anything else that provides climbing space. The variety of clematis is overwhelming—there are more than 250 species to choose from! No matter which one you choose, growing clematis is well worth the time and effort.

Choose your location carefully! Once they are planted, clematis do not much care for being moved. The general rule is to plant clematis where the roots are in cool, moist shade but the plant grows up toward full sunshine. That is because their natural habitat is where the plant may root in soil near the base of a tree or hedge and grow up through the branches to smother the canopy in massive flowers.

The perfect time to plant clematis is early spring. Make sure that the crown of the plant is just below the soil, with the stem leaning toward the wall, fence, arch, or pergola post. Back fill the hole and water well. Make sure that you provide vertical support to encourage new growth to go in the right direction.

It takes a couple of seasons for the plant to reach its full potential, but you should see fairly good growth the first summer after planting. Keep your plant well-watered the first season, and mulch it well over the winter. Once the roots are established, it should flower in the second season.

When space is an issue, but you still want drama and color in your garden, growing these vertically is quite astonishing. Once established, these garden wonders will have abundant blooms season after season.

Clematis species are divided into three groups based on when they flower. Group one is the early flowering group, which needs a light pruning and tidying up after flowering. This encourages new stems over the summer for flowering the following year.

Group two includes all large summer-flowering cultivars. These big blooms are produced on the new season’s growth and should be pruned in early spring, cutting old stems right back to a fresh pair of buds.

Group three includes late summer-flowering clematis. These need a spring prune to promote tons of flowers. You should cut down all the old growth to a strong pair of buds and tie in the new growth as it appears.

3 Day Kitchen & Bath Authorized Dealer

If you plant these different types in your garden, you can enjoy season-long color starting in early spring through late fall. These perennials are really quite carefree and happily scramble over trellises, arbors, and fences without much upkeep.

Some of the varieties that I especially love continue to delight year after year. Many clematis species bloom in the most spectacular and brilliant shades of purple. I love purple flowers as a palette in the garden, and the different hues and richness are just delightful. There are also some new cultivars that grow like hedges instead of vines. These are perfect for garden borders. Once established, they require minimal attention, so they are perfect for a gardener who is just starting out.

Types of clematis that are real showstoppers are always my favorite. Clematis Taiga has complex, two-toned flowers that continue to change as the plant matures. Crystal Fountain is named for its flower form. The center of the flower resembles a fountain. It has very vigorous, medium-sized flowers that grow on both old and new vines.

Clematis Rhapsody is a great performer. Its sapphire blooms and cream-colored centers make it a stunning addition to any garden. Tie Dye is a hardy and spirited vine that shows off a unique purple and white variegation and would certainly make a big splash in any garden!

Sweet Autumn Clematis is exactly what its name suggests. It blooms late summer into autumn. Besides being filled with hundreds of small white blooms, it is a prolific grower and is very easily cared for. Josephine Clematis is a dramatic climber with fully double, layered blooms. Its vibrant pink/lilac base surrounds pom-pom centers of soft pink. If you want some splashes of red in your garden, Clematis Burning Love is for you. The flowers on this vine are a deep scarlet red with a soft, rich velvety texture. Happy Diana is a clematis with large tulip-shaped flowers in beautiful rosy tones. It can provide great vertical interest in the garden.

I have highlighted here just a few of the many and varied species of clematis. You will never regret planting these hard-working climbers. They will bring beauty to your garden for years to come!

Cats Make Great Pets

The cat’s pajamas may have been hung out to dry, but four-legged felines are more popular than ever. Since ancient times, when cats were worshipped and given divine status, cats have been the big cheese all around the world. Cats are everywhere, roaming every continent except Antarctica. They have adapted to thrive in a wide variety of habitats, from tropical rainforests to deserts and mountain ranges, from sprawling rural land to concrete-laden urban centers. Both domesticated and wild cats live in all corners of the world. They enjoy all sorts of living quarters and cuisine, and they are always in charge. As they say,“dogs have owners; cats have staff.”

One thing that people seem to love about cats is that cats are, well, weird. Internet and feline fanciers have many theories about cats’ odd actions. Fear of cucumbers is well documented. The theory? Cucumbers resemble snakes. I have never seen a slithering cuke, but you get the idea. If you have a cat, test the theory yourself! Set a cucumber on the floor behind your cat and see how it reacts (the cat, that is, not the cucumber).

Not all cats are aloof or grumpy cat types, but many would not condescend to a leash. On the other hand, some cats enjoy a tethered stroll. One of my neighbors walks her cat outdoors by setting the cat on her shoulder. This is a ragdoll cat, one of the largest domestic breeds. I have cared for many dogs, and they all shrink from this neighborhood feline.

This is not to say that cats are disobedient, per se. They are simply…discerning. They will accept training for a skill or art that they have decided they want to learn. If not, your efforts are for naught. Tabby strolls off, tail flicking, leaving you holding the treat.

While more American homes have dogs, it’s common to have just one dog. Lots of households with cats have multiple cats. Many cats adapt well to feline roommates, though it can take months for them to settle into a relationship. In some cases, they just don’t take to each other. As long as they don’t fight when they meet, they may well be content to just ignore each other.

The seven most popular breeds of cats are purebreds, and the most popular are among the largest. The Ragdoll is number one. With luxurious long hair, this breed is typically playful, smart, and friendly. The second most popular breed, the Maine Coon, is a sociable chatterbox distinguished by its large ears.

The Devon Rex is often companionable with dogs and other cats. This smart breed has short, wavy hair and is considered to be somewhat hypoallergenic. The exotic shorthair is a Persian-like breed but with short hair and no tail. The

pure Persian may look grumpy, but it is not really angry. (At least, not necessarily.)

The British shorthair has a thick body and broad face. Its pineapple-colored eyes are stunning. The seventh most popular breed, the Abyssinian, is curious, playful, sensible, loyal, and intelligent.

The eighth most popular cat is non-pedigreed. The Tabby is known for its distinctive coat with faint stripes. They are affectionate, vocal, and playful enough to star on YouTube.

The Scottish Fold, number nine, is affectionate, adaptable, and placid. This one goes along and gets along. It gets its name from a gene mutation that affects its cartilage, causing its ears to fold down toward the head. Last on the Top Ten list is the Sphinx, a cat developed by selective breeding to be hairless. It is a good pet and a good choice for allergy sufferers.

An important consideration for all cat owners is whether or not to have your cat altered (that is, neutered or spayed). Veterinarians recommend this procedure for all cats. Millions of stray cats are euthanized annually, so the population is clearly out of control! There is no benefit to letting your cat have a litter before she is spayed, and some nations actually have laws requiring that non-breeding cats must be spayed. There are health benefits for spaying cats at six months. This protects her against breast and uterine cancer and uterine infections.

By law, all cats must be vaccinated against rabies. If you ignore this requirement, you may be refused service at kennels, be required to pay a fine, or even have your animal confiscated. All cats should also be vaccinated against feline rhinotracheitis, pneumonia, feline calicivirus, and panleukopenia. These are highly contagious, potentially fatal diseases. Your vet can tell you more about required and recommended vaccines for a healthy cat.

Building a Gratitude Habit

One Day at a Time

On December 3rd of last year, my daughter, Carissa, suggested that she and I begin texting one another on a daily basis. The assignment would be to list three positive things that we were grateful for in our lives. I thought it was a terrific idea, as I was feeling less than appreciative of my life at the time. I had broken my femur a few weeks prior and was living in a rehab facility after having surgery on my leg. Let’s just say I really wasn’t focused on the good in my life…like my husband, Manny, and my Operations Manager, Roxy.

“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” — Melody Beattie

I don’t know how Carissa came up with this idea, but it could not have come at a better time. I definitely needed a kick in the pants. After I broke my leg, I found that my feelings were leaning more toward frustration, irritation, negativity, and self-pity…a long ways from gratitude!

“Gratitude turns what we have into enough.” – Anonymous

I admit that this daily task was more challenging than I thought it would be. Some days, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed and really struggled to send her my list. When this happened, I found that I was beating myself up for my inability to come up with three things… just three things.

“Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.” — Zig Zigler

As the days went on, the daily assignment became easier. I realized that listing what I was grateful for meant taking some time in my day to be present and in the now. It meant reflecting on the positive instead of the negative. It meant honoring my daughter by sharing the best part of me instead of sharing my negativity.

“Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher.” — Oprah Winfrey

Another benefit from the exercise is that I was able to get a glimpse inside Carissa’s heart and mind. I gained a better understanding of who she had become, how much she loves her daughters, and what makes her happy!

“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” — Marcel Proust

Carissa and I continue our daily assignments, and it gets easier all the time. We keep each other on this positive track. It makes my days and weeks better. A big thank you goes out to Carissa for this wonderful habit that she got us started on!

Physical Therapy

Restore Your Range of Motion

Physical therapy is a combination of exercises, stretches, and movements that will increase your strength, flexibility, and mobility to help you move safely and confidently. Often it is part of a pain management plan for recovery after an injury or health condition. It’s common to need physical therapy after many types of surgery, too.

A specialized healthcare provider that does this type of work is called a physical therapist (PT). To become a PT in the United States, you must first earn a bachelor’s degree and then complete an educational program that includes courses in a variety of medical topics, such as biology, anatomy, and many others.

Physical therapy may help treat many different medical conditions, including neck pain, back pain, hip pain, wrist pain (carpal tunnel syndrome), sports injuries, tendinitis and other tendon problems, rotator cuff tears, knee injuries, jaw problems, concussions, strokes, spinal cord and brain injuries, lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s disease, and cystic fibrosis.

It can also treat a variety of other health problems. This may include improving movement or the ability to do daily tasks, preventing disability surgery, providing rehabilitation after a stroke or surgery, helping a woman recover after giving birth, and learning to use a walker or cane. People of all ages can benefit from physical therapy.

Pelvic floor dysfunction is fairly common in women, especially those who have been pregnant. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissues that support the bladder, bowels, and reproductive organs. Dysfunction occurs when these muscles become too weak, too tight, or have poor coordination. Common causes include pregnancy, childbirth, aging, surgery, certain medical conditions, and chronic straining.

A common symptom of pelvic floor dysfunction is urinary incontinence. Physical therapy can help with this! Physical therapists design treatment programs to improve pelvic floor muscle strength, relax tight muscles, and improve coordination with other muscles.

Physical therapy is a combination of hands-on techniques (a therapist moving part of your body) and exercises or movements you perform under a PT’s supervision or at home by yourself. Physical therapy can include stretching, strength training (with or without weights or exercise equipment), massage, heat or cold therapy, hydrotherapy, and transcutaneous electronic nerve stimulation (TENS). Physical therapy is usually done on an outpatient basis, which means you aren’t staying in a hospital or healthcare facility while you do it.

Physical therapy has improved my own quality of life. I have always had leg issues because one of my hips is lower than the other. I have compensated for that for 70 years. Re -

cently, I fell on some ice, and it caused significant leg pain. My doctor prescribed physical therapy. My PT was tenacious in diagnosing the issue, and she figured out that it was really my misaligned hip, not my leg, that was causing the problem. She used heat, stretching, and electrodes, and it really worked.

How long you’ll need physical therapy depends on which injuries or health conditions you have and which area of your body needs help moving better. Some people only need a few weeks of physical therapy to help with a short-term issue. Others need it for months or years to manage symptoms of a chronic (long-term) condition. If you have a serious illness or injury, a PT won’t take the place of other doctors, but they will work with your doctors and other healthcare professionals to guide treatments.

It might not be easy (especially at first), but physical therapy is worth it. You might feel stressed, tired, or even exhausted after a physical therapy session. These feelings are valid and normal. Your strength, flexibility, and mobility will improve over time.

Physical therapy and occupational therapy both help you move your body better or more safely. The difference between them is their end goal. People usually need physical therapy to manage symptoms of a health condition like pain and stiffness in a specific body part.

Occupational therapy is focused on performing daily tasks and living as independently as possible. The “occupation” in occupational therapy doesn’t necessarily mean your ability to do your job or get back to work after an injury. Occupational therapy is a general term providers use to cover any tasks you need to do daily (at home or at work).

For most health insurance, including Medicare, a PT is considered a specialist. Usually, seeing a PT requires an order from your regular physician with a set number of appointments and a co-pay. Be sure to see someone who is licensed by your state to provide physical therapy. They can bring you back to a life with freedom of movement.

Stopping Up the Summer Brain Drain

Help Kids Sharpen Their Skills

Spring is here. It’s the perfect time to start making summer plans! For years, our grandsons came to spend their summer at the lake with us. We’d drive about 1,500 miles to pick them up. The trip home was a bit longer because we would select a route that included sights and areas of historic interest.

On one trip, we stopped to see some ancient ruins. I encouraged the boys to read the explanatory signs, look around the area we were in, and guess how the people lived. The oldest said, “Grandma, it’s summer. We’re not supposed to have to think.”

That’s when it dawned on me why kids lose academic skills between one school year and the next: summer brain drain! I’ve devised a list of ideas to help parents, grandparents, and all of us “stop up” the summer brain drain.

Start by letting the kids help plan a summer trip. Remind them that location, distance, and activities are important when deciding where to go. You can suggest destinations if they don’t have ideas. Encourage the kids in a discussion about the reasons for their choice and any limitations. Everybody’s ideas should be considered. Read brochures and guidebooks. Find it on the map. What do they think is the best method of transportation? Their responses may surprise you. Whatever the mode of travel (planes, trains, or automobiles), the kids should anticipate their needs and plan accordingly.

If you drive, start with a map. Find the destination and decide what route to take, and why. Consider alternatives routes. Determine how much time would be involved. Does potential inclement weather need to be considered? You’ll be working on map-reading, thinking, and planning.

Sometimes kids need entertainment along the way. We played car games. Noting license plates and then using the atlas to see how far those folks drove can be fun. The alphabet game of using signs to find letters…or looking for objects beginning with letters of the alphabet…is sometimes a challenge. “I Spy” is a good travel game. Older kids enjoy a spelling game I call “Add a Letter,” in which one person starts with a letter and each person adds one letter until they form a word. Games engage everyone. Naps are allowed, too.

A staycation requires a different kind of planning. Let the kids make the shopping list. Planning the menu precludes fixing foods they won’t like. Meals must be prepared, and the kids can help. They can follow simple recipes or help you with the preparation.

When you’re battling brain drain, it’s important to not be too obvious. Sneak learning, thinking, and other skills into everyday activities. Let the kids have a say in all decisions. Each opinion is important. They’ll learn how to plan, make decisions, and compromise…all skills that will come in handy in the fall.

Tire Safety

Where the Rubber Meets the Road

I feel like tires sometimes get a bad rap. We don’t give them much thought because they do not seem all that exciting (until you have a flat, of course— now, that’s exciting!). However, let’s delve into what tires really do for us. Good tires are critical for safe driving because they support your vehicle’s weight, provide necessary traction, and absorb shocks. Tires with adequate tread help your car accelerate, brake, and turn. Tires absorb all the bumps and vibrations that come with driving. You won’t get far in your vehicle if your tires are old and busted!

There are different types of tires, and it is important to know the differences. Most vehicles today come with all-season tires. These tires are very well balanced and can handle a wide variety of road conditions, including dry, wet, and snowy surfaces. In many locations, all-season tires are the only tires that drivers will ever need. However, snow tires, summer tires, performance tires, and mud-terrain tires can meet more specific driving needs.

If you live in an area that gets significant inclement weather like ice and snow, you may benefit from what are called snow tires. These tires have deeper tread and can provide a much better grip during slippery and wintery road conditions. Summer tires are designed for performance vehicles and perform better than all-season tires when the pavement is warm and dry. They do wear out faster than all-season tires.

Performance tires are designed with softer rubber compounds and stiffer sidewalls for better grip in dry conditions. Mud-terrain tires perform well in mud, snow, and rocky areas—even on sand dunes. Run-flat tires are designed to resist the effects of deflation when punctured.

Most drivers will eventually consider this question: Does replacing one tire mean I should replace all four tires? Tire manufacturers would say yes—it’s best to replace all four at once for even wear. However, if you have front-wheel drive, you can sometimes get away with replacing just two tires at a time. (If you do this, the new tires should always be placed on the rear wheels and the older tires moved to the front.) Most experts agree that your tires should be replaced every six years, or after a maximum of 60,000 to 75,000 miles of driving.

Tires definitely have an effect on the ride of your vehicle. They influence how much control you have while driving, how quickly you can stop, and how accurately you can take turns. You can extend the life of your tires by filling your tires correctly and keeping track of your tire’s alignment.

Rotating your tires can go a long way in extending the

life of your tires because it encourages even wear on all tire surfaces. You can rotate your tires left to right, back to front, and diagonally to extend the life span of your tires. You should have your tires rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 miles, which is easy to align with your regular oil changes. Consult your specific owner’s manual for the most accurate guidance for your vehicle.

Whether to repair or replace a tire can be a tricky decision. If you get a nail puncture in the tread area that it is no larger than 1/4 inch in diameter, the tire can usually be repaired. You can probably safely patch or plug a tire a total of two or three times at most, and that’s only as long as the punctures are not within six inches of each other. If the puncture is in the sidewall or shoulder of the tire, it cannot be safely repaired.

There is a lot of talk about filling your tires with nitrogen. When it comes to handling and ride quality, a tire properly inflated with air will perform just as well as one filled with nitrogen. The benefits of nitrogen over normal air include improved fuel efficiency, increased tire life, and reduced corrosion. The disadvantages are limited availability and the higher cost to fill tires with nitrogen. Although tires filled with nitrogen will have a slower loss of pressure, it might be difficult to find nitrogen for a refill when you need it. If in a pinch, there is no harm in putting regular air in a nitrogen-filled tire.

If your steering is wobbly after a tire rotation, your tires need to be balanced properly. Wheel alignment should be addressed every 6,000 miles or so. Ideally, you should have your tires rotated, balanced, and aligned at the same time. Tires are hard workers that help absorb all the bumps in the road. Treat them well and they will return the favor!

STATUS

Elevate Your Style with Pre-Loved Luxury

Designer handbags and accessories are more than just fashion statements; they are about quality, craftsmanship, and timeless style. However, high price tags can often make them seem unattainable. Luxury does not have to be out of your grasp! STATUS, a local boutique, makes high-end luxury items more affordable by offering a place to find items that someone else has already treasured.

STATUS offers a selection of pre-loved authentic luxury handbags and accessories. The boutique’s products include handbags, scarves, hats, shoes, and jewelry. Some luxury brands include Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, and Telfar. The boutique also carries 3AM Luxury handbags, an international brand owned by Jared Hall from Omaha.

Boutique owner Christi Ballard is an Omaha native with over 20 years of experience in the fashion industry. She gained valuable expertise in business operation, marketing, merchandising, and customer service as a regional trainer and manager. “I’ve always loved customer service and providing immediate gratification for people by giving them something they needed,” Christi shares. “I knew that having

my own company was the goal; I just had to narrow my options.” She opened STATUS in May 2020, combining her love of luxury and sustainable living.

STATUS was located for four years in Aksarben Village, but Christi is looking for a building to purchase and hopes to relocate by the spring of 2026. Currently, she has a pop-up shop at Rockbrook Village, inside of Label Omaha. “Omaha’s support of sustainable, secondhand luxury has made us the

recommended choice in the market,” she notes. STATUS ships to all 50 states, does live selling on social media sites, and holds pop-up shops at different events.

Christi has always loved luxury products, not just because of the name but because of the quality. At age 13, her parents gave Christi her first Louis Vuitton handbag—a piece she still owns. “I would much rather spend more money up front for something instead of paying for it again later because it does not last,” she says. The products she offers at STATUS retain their value. “These are tangible investments that you can get your money out of if you choose to invest in them. You don’t need everything,” she points out, “just a few pieces that go with everything.”

The boutique’s name holds special meaning for Christi. “I wanted the name to be something significant to me but also mean something to my customers.” Her father passed away before she got married, and Christi recalls how he always checked in with her and her siblings. “He would ask us about our status,” she says. It was his way of asking what was happening in their lives. “ STATUS is my forever business. And status can be whatever you celebrate; it can be forever.”

Quality and authenticity are vital to the business. Christi uses Entrupy, an AI-powered product verification tool. This tool protects businesses, buyers, and sellers from counterfeit goods. STATUS also offers authentication services and limited consignment services twice a year. They take care to only accept consignment items that fit the boutique’s model.

Some luxury items have date codes that indicate when the item was manufactured. Christi recalls a customer who came into the store with a photo of a bag she wanted in college but

could not afford. “This particular bag was not mass-produced,” Christi explains. “She brought the photo to me 30 years after graduating from college and asked if we could find it for her.” They found the bag in great condition; it even had a date code of the year of the customer’s college graduation.

Christi’s customer service philosophy is simple. Her team strives to provide a welcoming and pressure-free shopping experience. “We always introduce ourselves and establish a connection with our customers,” Christi says. “We encourage people to browse and ask questions. We actively listen to provide meaningful answers.”

Transparency is also vital. Items are priced based on their brand, condition, and collection. And the boutique stands behind its products. “If someone uses a bag for six months and changes their mind, they will take priority when we offer consignment,” Christi says. “We will try to get their money back, providing value for their investment.”

“At STATUS, we don’t just sell luxury items,” Christi emphasizes. “We provide expertise, knowledge, and exceptional customer service. If there is a piece someone has always dreamed of owning, we do everything we can to source it and make it happen.”

STATUS is temporarily located inside Label Omaha at 11046 Elm Street, in Rockbrook Village. The boutique is open Tuesday through Friday, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You may reach them by phone at 402-915-0262 or find them online at mystatuslux. com. Expanding the Outdoors Enhance Your Living Space

How would you like a bright, airy space in your home where you can unwind, read a book, dine, or enjoy nature while being protected from unpredictable weather, winds, or pesky insects? A transitional indoor-outdoor space offers the best of both worlds, combining the feel of the outdoors and the comfort of being inside. Adding a screened-in porch, three-season sunroom, or four-season sunroom increases your living area and creates a tranquil space where you can enjoy nature.

The type of room that is right for you depends upon your lifestyle, needs, and budget. Screened-in porches are an affordable way to enjoy fresh air while protecting you from bugs and light rain. This type of porch remains open to outdoor temperatures, so it is best for mild climates or seasonal use.

As the name implies, a three-season sunroom may be enjoyed for three of the four seasons. This type of room is enclosed with glass but does not have temperature control because it is not connected to your home’s HVAC system.

If you are looking for a year-round option, a four-season sunroom is the best choice. This type of room is insulated and climate-controlled so that you may enjoy it year-round. Although this option is more expensive, a four-season sunroom adds significant value to your home.

There are several important factors to consider when deciding on the right type of room for your home. Selecting the right location should be the first step. Think about how the room’s orientation will affect temperature and sunlight exposure. Will the windows have direct sun for most of the day, or will they be shaded? Will you need protection from rain, heat, or cold weather? These factors will affect your comfort and your heating and cooling costs, particularly if you are considering a climate-controlled four-season sunroom.

Next, establish a budget for the project to manage costs and set expectations. The budget will influence the type and size of the room and the materials used. Aside from construction expenses, costs may include window coverings, furniture, and other décor needed to complete the space.

Think about how you will use the space to help determine the design, layout, and desired features. Do you want a retreat to relax and unwind or a space to entertain guests? If you enjoy gardening, the room can serve as a year-round space to grow plants. The space can function as a home office with great views. Families with children can use it as a playroom, and hobbyists can use it as a craft space. Defining the room’s purpose ahead of time will help you design a room that maximizes comfort and functionality.

Several screening options are available for those selecting

a screened-in porch. Fiberglass is a popular and affordable choice that does not rust, corrode, or crease easily. It is available in various colors and fine mesh options for extra bug protection.

Vinyl-coated polyester is more durable than fiberglass, is pet-resistant, and is better at blocking insects, dust, debris, and moisture. It is also resistant to rust and corrosion. Aluminum is strong, sag-resistant, and a good option for windy areas. It is also a low-maintenance option.

Solar screens are great for screened porches that are exposed to direct sunlight. These screens are made from fiberglass or polyester, effectively blocking sunlight and UV rays and reducing glare and heat. For those who want an option with high aesthetic appeal, high-end metals like brass, copper, bronze, or stainless steel may be a good choice. The vibrant color can provide curb appeal, does not rust or damage easily, and is long-lasting when properly maintained.

There are some important things to consider when choosing the glass for a three-season or four-season sunroom. The U-value of glass measures its insulating qualities and indicates how efficiently it keeps hot or cooled air within. A lower U-value indicates more effective insulation. Glass walls should be A-rated, tempered for safety, and silicone double-sealed.

When selecting a contractor for your project, be sure to get your important questions answered. Find out how long the company has been in business and what their experience is with your type of project. Do they have the necessary licenses? Are they insured? Ask for a cost estimate and project timeline. Check their references. Asking questions will help you find the best contractor for your project.

Adding a transitional indoor-outdoor space to your home increases your living area and enhances your connection to nature. Whether you select a screened-in porch, three-season sunroom, or four-season sunroom, you will have a comfortable retreat to enjoy with your family and friends.

Garage Makeovers Take Your Garage Up a Notch!

With summer on the horizon, you’re probably thinking about spending more time outside, working around the house and the yard. To get the home improvement season started, consider getting a garage makeover!

The first step to making over your garage is decluttering. We all have to admit it—there is definitely unnecessary junk in the garage. Free up your space by throwing out or donating any items you no longer need or want. Once that’s accomplished, categorize everything that’s left so you can get to the main organizational goal: creating storage solutions that maximize your space.

There are lots of different ways to get creative with storage options in your garage. Garages typically have three unused walls and a ceiling…why not maximize all that unused space? Consider installing garage cabinetry, buying freestanding shelves, adding pegboard or wall track panels to create a wall organizer system with movable hooks or shelves, or installing an overhead storage unit on the ceiling beams. Before you fill up all that extra space with more storage, consider leaving some room to build a garage workshop. Nobody likes having wood shavings and paint odors inside the house. It’s best to have a place you can do that kind of work outside…in the garage.

When choosing a space, keep in mind that the best work -

Outdoor Living

shops have direct access to electrical adapters and outlets (for extra lighting and power tools) and are well-ventilated (to minimize paint and other chemical fumes while you work).

After identifying a good space, it’s time for the fun part— choosing a work bench and tool storage. If you’re struggling to select the best spot or the appropriate storage options, enlist a garage makeover specialist to design something that fits your space and your life.

Now that you’re planning to spend more time in your glorious garage, consider taking the flooring up to the next level. A plain concrete floor is functional but can be easily damaged by ambient moisture, chemical or paint spills, road salts, and heavy objects. There are a number of popular garage flooring options to choose from, such as interlocking tiles, vinyl flooring, rubber flooring, and epoxy coating.

Interlocking tiles (usually made of PVC, rubber, or foam), vinyl flooring, and rolled rubber flooring are some of the quickest options to install. All of them come pre-fabricated, don’t require any adhesive, and can be placed directly on your existing garage floor. Rubber flooring has the advantage

Progressive Screens—Powered on a self-tensioning magnetic track, they will protect from sun, wind, and insects. A variety of transparency levels are available to offer visibility or privacy.

of being slip-resistant and more durable than vinyl, PVC, or foam. Rubber and foam flooring also make standing in the garage more comfortable, since they add cushioning underfoot.

Epoxy coating is a lot more labor-intensive to install. However, coating your garage floor in epoxy is going to be generally less expensive than buying flooring or mats. It also has the advantages of being more stain-resistant and lasting for more than a decade without wearing out. It’s also better at protecting the concrete floor underneath from cracks caused by moisture damage. Epoxy coating is installed by creating a two-part mixture and spreading it across a concrete floor. For the best, longest-lasting results, you’ll want hire a professional to do the job.

Last, but not least, is your garage door. Garage doors are made to last around 15 to 30 years, but they can be prematurely aged if they are opened and closed many times per day. After all, your garage door is more than just the paneling that you see, it’s also all the springs, hinges, wheels, and tracks that allow it to function. If your garage door doesn’t open and close smoothly and (relatively) quietly, it’s probably time to look at a replacement.

Most garages have traditional style roll-up doors, but that isn’t the only type on the market. Some other styles to look into are farmhouse, contemporary, craftsman, carriage, and insulated doors. An insulated garage door is an excellent choice if you plan to insulate your whole garage to keep your storage and workspace more climate-controlled.

If you want to get extra fancy, you can also look into different types of opening mechanisms. Besides the typical roll-up style, there are bi-fold doors and doors that slide to the side. Garage doors will typically be made of steel, wood, or composite. Depending on the material, they can often come pre-painted and ready to install.

No matter what level of garage makeover you choose to do, it’s always a great choice to re-vamp your garage space to meet your household’s current needs. If you need more storage space, a nice workshop, or both, take a good look at the space available in your garage!

Great Finds Consignment Gallery

Celebrating 20 Glorious Years in Business

Julie Twedt and her husband, Jerrold, have owned

Great Finds Consignment Gallery for 20 wonderful years, and they look forward to the years ahead. More than anything, they want to say thank you!“We celebrate each of you who make this business special each day,”says Julie. “Our consignors, who bring wonderful furniture and décor; our shoppers, who enjoy finding the great items you provide and who brighten our day as they come in our door.”

Great Finds Consignment Gallery provides high-quality, unique, gently used items at reasonable prices. The gallery is both a labor of love and a family affair. “We are fortunate to work with our son, Brad, who manages the inventory, among other things,” Julie says. “We are also fortunate to have our daughter, Darcy, involved, along with three part-time employees: Victoria, Barb, and Jill.” Julie is proud of these wonderful people who care about helping customers in any way possible.

Great Finds carries a diverse inventory of gently used furniture and home décor items from non-smoking private homes. Furniture includes sofas, chairs, dining sets, coffee tables, desks, headboards, dressers, nightstands, and shelving units. Home décor items include artwork, lamps, mirrors, pottery, occasional seasonal items, and other unique accessories. Items are available in various styles, like vintage, traditional, and contemporary. “The inventory changes weekly, which makes it worthwhile to stop whenever you have time to visit,” Julie advises.

photos of furniture to the gallery. If accepted, the seller sets up an appointment to bring the furniture to Great Finds. “We can recommend an independent mover, if desired,” Julie says. “We are also happy to help sellers unload their items at the gallery.” Sellers with decorative items may call the gallery to schedule an appointment. They bring 15–20 items to the appointment and find out which items will be accepted at that time.

“We celebrate each of you who make this business special each day.”

Great Finds consigns items for three months. Items are marked down 10 percent at the beginning of the second and third months if they have not sold. Sellers receive 50 percent of the selling price, and consignor payments are mailed monthly. After three months, sellers may take back their unsold items or leave them with Great Finds for donation.

Julie has been working with secondhand furniture for a long time, and she offers some advice about selecting it. Consider these questions: Is the item of good quality? Is it visually appealing? Is it still in good condition? Check the item for damage and confirm that it has all the necessary parts. Julie encourages customers to sit on the seating furniture in the gallery. “It’s important to sit on it to see if you like it. You must know how it feels before you buy.”

“We carry good quality furniture and home décor items that are clean and from non-smoking environments,” Julie asserts. “Each of us at Great Finds enjoys taking care of customers and working with inventory arrangement, so it’s always inviting and fun to come by.” Everyone who walks through the door is treated as if they are part of the family. “We love what we do and love having people stop in when they need something for their home,” Julie says. “If you just want to look, or if you need help or have questions, we are there!”

For potential sellers, the process of consigning items is simple and straightforward. Sellers may email or bring

“We are thankful that people take the time to stop in and look around the gallery. It is rewarding when someone finds an item that fills a need in their life…and then we can send some money to a consignor. It’s a win-win.”

For two decades, Julie and Jerrold have worked hard to earn the word-of-mouth advertising they get from happy customers. Those customers deserve special thanks, Julie says, “for sharing with your family and friends that Great Finds is a place they should check out!”

Julie also extends her thanks to this magazine, which is her only source of print advertising. “Thanks to the Women’s Edition team! You have such a wonderful publication each month that provides so many of us with a way to invite people to come find us,” Julie concludes. “You are the only way we have advertised for 20 years, aside from our website, and we are ever grateful for your care and attention to detail.”

Great Finds Consignment Gallery is located at 13448 L Street in Omaha. The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You can find them online at greatfindsconsignment.com or call them at 402-895-5455 for more information.

Back to Basics Life is Meant to be Fun

“If it feels good, it’s good. If it feels bad, it’s bad.” —Abraham/Hicks

I am remembering the importance of reaching for that good-feeling place in my life. I am remembering that laughter is good. I am remembering that fun is good. I am remembering that life is what I decide it is going to be, and I want it to be positive. I am remembering that like attracts like. I am remembering that life is supposed to be fun. Boy, this feels like coming home.

“At the end of the day, if I can say I had fun, it was a good day.” —Simone Biles

Years ago, I had weekly meetings with friends to discuss the Abraham/Hicks teachings and philosophy. It was a small group. We had all listened to the weekly cassette…yes, cassette…and we discussed what we had learned. Inevitably, I would ask everyone, “Did you have any fun this week?” Looking back on it, I would guess that my question was quite annoying to everyone in my group.

Fun is a great thing. Think about the people you like to spend time with. My best guess is that you like to spend time with them because they are FUN!

“Let go of the people who dull your shine, poison your spirit, and bring you drama. Cancel your subscription to their issues.” —Steve Marboli

Analyzing whether we are having fun may seem silly, but think about those people out there who appear to be truly having fun. It may be an incredibly successful business person—Richard Branson comes to mind. It may be your neighbor, who is a stay-at-home parent who adores his or her children. It may be a committed athlete who is always smiling and winning. The common denominator is that they love their lives. They are passionate about what they have made a commitment to. They are having fun, just about every single day.

“Edit your life frequently and ruthlessly. It’s your masterpiece, after all.” —Anonymous

Editing our lives means making deliberate decisions about everything…about who we are going to spend time with, what movies we’ll choose to watch, what “channel” we are going to tune into every morning. This determines the level of fun in our lives. I’m choosing fun. Today. Tomorrow. Every day. Back to basics. Life is meant to be fun!
