The Roads Less Traveled

Are we back to reality yet? Kids back in school. Days getting shorter. Temperatures falling. Trees changing color. There is something very special about the autumn season. It has now become my favorite. I love the coziness, the brisk nights. Makes me smile just thinking about it!

The other day, a friend and I were reflecting on the wide variety of entertainment that is now available in the Omaha area. This summer, my husband Manny and I decided to venture outside of Omaha to attend a couple of outdoor concerts over in Iowa.

Our first visit was to Malvern, Iowa. The reggae cover band Rhythm Collective was playing at the local golf course. It was a lot like a miniature Jazz on the Green—fewer people, very laid back. We placed our chairs under a huge sycamore tree, relaxed, and enjoyed people watching and getting to know the locals.

It was the weekend before the 4th of July. At the end of the night, they had their fireworks display, which was put on by the local volunteer fire department. We were impressed! I thought it would be a very short show, as the town has a population of just over 1,000. The fireworks went on for over 25 minutes! It was beautiful and so much fun.

A couple of weeks later, we visited the Davies Amphitheater in Glenwood, Iowa, with some friends. Glenwood is a little larger than Malvern…population just over 5,000. As we were driving through town, Manny and I commented on what a beautiful place it is. So well maintained! You can tell the residents are very proud of their town. We saw The Dustin West Band, who did a George Strait tribute. Again…great time. The amphitheater holds about 600 people, but it was only about half full. We loved the band and the people. It was so much fun watching the little kids get up and dance.

There is so much to do in Omaha that you could spend your whole summer in town and never get bored. That doesn’t mean you should nev

er venture out! Manny and I made the decision to get out of our normal routines this summer. By checking out things just outside our own backyard, we discovered some very enjoyable entertainment. Malvern is just over 40 miles away; Glenwood is just over 30. It’s amazing what a different vibe they have, so close to Omaha. Calm. Peaceful. Relaxing. Loved it!

Before I go, I have to wish my three brothers, Tom, Steve, and Greg, happy September birthdays. They are all still here in Omaha. I guess they didn’t want to move away any more than I did. Happy birthday, guys!

Enjoy the change of season and we’ll see you next month!

Remove, drain, and cool. Peel and slice and put in a large bowl. Combine 1 cup vinegar with 1/2 cup of sugar, 2 teaspoons of whole cloves, 1 teaspoon of whole allspice, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and bring the mixture to a boil. Boil for 5 minutes. Cool slightly. second dish, whisk together 1/2 cup of buttermilk and 1 egg. In the third dish, combine 1/2 cup of yellow cornmeal, 1/2 cup of panko breadcrumbs, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of paprika.

Cut 2 large green tomatoes into several 1/2-inch slices. Coat each slice in flour and shake off the excess. Dip each one into the egg mixture and then into the panko mixture. Put the slices onto a baking sheet and let stand for 10 minutes. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees. Coat the tomato slices with cooking spray. Arrange slices in a single layer in the basket. Cook for 12 minutes, then turn and continue cooking until crisp and brown. Repeat until all slices are cooked. Serve with dipping sauce: 1/2 cup of sour cream mixed with 1/4 teaspoon of fresh dill and a dash of lemon juice.

Betty’s Slow Cooker Pheasant

Marinate 6 deboned and cubed pheasant (or chicken) breasts in 3/4 cup of teriyaki for 2 hours. Mix 1/2 cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and a bit of black pepper. Dredge the pheasant in the flour. Brown in 3 Tablespoons of oil. Add a sliced onion and cook for 2–3 minutes. Place the pheasant in a slow cooker. Add 1 can of beer and 1 cup of sliced mushrooms. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours. Serve with cooked rice, noodles, or mashed potatoes.

The Chocolate Chip Cookie

Mix 3 sticks of soft butter with 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of brown sugar, 3 eggs, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla. Beat for 3–5 minutes. Whisk together 3 cups of flour, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture—if it’s too thick, drizzle in 1 Tablespoon of milk. Add 4 cups of chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of chopped pecans or

walnuts. Scoop onto cookie sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 8–10 minutes. Cool for 1–2 minutes, then remove to wire rack to cool completely.

Cereal Milk Frosted Cookies

For the cereal milk: Mix 1 cup of your favorite cereal with 1/4 cup of Half and Half or milk; let soak for 15 minutes. Strain and set the milk aside (it will be used for the frosting).

For the cookies: Mix 2 sticks of soft butter with 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 2 eggs. Mix for 5 minutes. Whisk together 3 cups of flour, 1 Tablespoon of cornstarch, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture. If it is too dry, add 1–2 teaspoons of the cereal milk to the batter. Scoop portions onto parchment-lined cookie sheets and bake at 350 degrees for 12–15 minutes, until golden. Let sit for 10 minutes, then remove to rack to cool.

For the frosting: Mix 6 Tablespoons of soft butter with 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla and 1 and 1/2 cups of powdered sugar. Add 1–2 Tablespoons of cereal milk and mix, adding more milk until you like the consistency. Frost the cookies and top with crushed dry cereal. Double the frosting ingredients if you want it thick.

Magical Peach Crumble

Melt 1 stick of butter in a 9x13-inch baking dish. Mix together 2/3 cup of sugar, 1 cup of flour, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 3/4 cup of milk. Pour this on top of the melted butter but do NOT stir in. Add 4 cups of peeled and sliced fresh peaches. Mix 1/4 cup of sugar with 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg. Sprinkle on top of the peaches. Bake at 375 degrees for 45–50 minutes, until brown and bubbly. Serve warm, with ice cream.

What to Love This Fall Classics and Colorful Trends

Some of my favorite things about fall are the classics— apple cider, pumpkins, crunchy leaves, and Halloween. I love classic fall fashion, too, and the changing of the seasons always inspires me to shop for fresh fall items.

After a few months of funky trends, fall greets us with the fashion classics. Tailored clothing will be an important and welcome way of dressing this fall. If you haven’t yet purchased a matching blazer and pant outfit, now is the time! Tried and true staples of classic tailoring feel fresh and new.

Structure is such an important part of fall dressing, especially after all the light and airy fabrics and silhouettes of summer. Pants are still a bit wider and fuller than last year, while blazers can run the gamut of flexible fits. Look for a jacket that is most flattering to your body. Longer, boxy styles work great on some people! Shorter jackets with more of a fitted look work particularly well on petite women.

What to wear under the jacket? Consider completing your look with a vest. Under a jacket, a vest brings a polished

look. Worn alone, a vest can be quite sexy and modern! Leather is always a luxurious fall fabric. Leather designers have taken the tailored look to another level with coordinated leather suiting. Many of these two-piece sets include skirts and vests. Leather-on-leather is an edgy, super chic look that you might not have considered but could look great on you! These leather looks are the ultimate in luxury dressing. Consumers seem to be trending toward investment dressing. A great idea for the fall is to purchase a few classic pieces that will never go out of style and then mix them up with fun trends. Matching two-piece outfits are not reserved for the business look. Matching sets of comfy leggings, joggers, sports bras, and jackets have taken the athleisure trend to new heights. You can be chic and cozy at the same time! Matching sets are definitely a hit this fall.

10 September 2023 Fashion Worthy

Nostalgia plays a part in every fashion season, and this year we are vibing the ’80s trends. We will be seeing bold geometric patterns, vivid colors, some oversized pieces, and even a shoulder pad here and there. Round out your outfit with a chunky gold necklace. Another trend I am loving is the return to metallic everything. Metallic fabrics reigned supreme in the ’80s, and it’s a fun, eye-catching, and versatile look. Wear a metallic top with jeans or under a blazer for a bit of pizzazz.

Every season, one color or another takes the fashion industry by storm. This fall, that color is RED! Bold reds will be the hit of your wardrobe this year. All hues of red will be offered, from orange-red to rose-violet to fire engine red. Pick a red that works with your skin tone and go with it. Red is a sign of positivity, passion, and creativity, reflecting a post-pandemic optimism. Shy about making a red commitment? Consider an accent piece first. Try a shoe, purse, or belt for a color lift without going all in.

Bold hues of green, yellow, and blue will also share the spotlight. It is joyful to see these colors in the fall, right when we usually are getting ready to bring on the gray and black. Of course, darker neutrals do have an important place in our fall wardrobe; they provide the juxtaposition to tame some of that bright color.

Do you stare into your closet and think you have nothing to wear? Create a capsule wardrobe. This is a carefully curated wardrobe that maximizes the number of outfits you can make while limiting the number of items you have, saving you time and money. The point is to have everything in the wardrobe work together. You can still keep your “fun” pieces! The capsule is the base of your wardrobe. Your personal lifestyle will dictate what pieces you need.

The first thing to do is to pick a base color. This shade must be versatile and neutral, and it must coordinate with everything else in the wardrobe. Choose your bottoms: jeans, trousers, yoga pants, dress pants, and skirts. Next, pick your tops: blouses, tanks,

sweaters, vests, and knit tops are good choices. Then, select your layering pieces: jean jackets, blazers, and sweaters. The key to creating a great base for your wardrobe is making sure everything fits well and can be used for layering.

We are looking forward to a vibrant fall, with beautiful colors and patterns to create an uplifting, positive vibe.

Tufly’s Shoe Center Promoting Happy, Healthy Feet

Fitness experts urge us to take 10,000 steps a day to stay fit and healthy. That’s about 3,650,000 steps a year—no small task, especially if your feet hurt. Remember the saying“my dogs are barking”? If you are experiencing foot pain, come visit Alan and Dorothy Tufly of Tufly’s Shoe Center. They fill doctors’ footwear prescriptions for diabetes, plantar fasciitis, arthritic deformities, and other problems. They are specialists at solving foot problems with great-fitting, stylish shoes.

We tend to focus on many other parts of our bodies to maintain health—we moisturize, we exercise, we tone, we diet—but we often ignore the important platform upon which our skeleton balances. If you have ever had a foot problem, you know it’s true: If your feet hurt, everything hurts. “We have solutions to foot problems, and the trust of our customers is so important to us,” Dorothy says. “That is what we strive for with each customer.” Alan and Dorothy are passionate about helping their customers find the right shoes for their individual needs.

The Tuflys opened their shoe store 30 years ago and have been at their present location at 16909 Lakeside Hills Plaza for 18 years. Alan and Dorothy have a combined 65 years of experience in the business.

While I was in the store, looking at the different styles of shoes, a young woman came in with a special request— she had small, wide feet. She was a special education teacher, and she knew that she needed comfortable shoes with good support. Dorothy asked her key questions about her needs, her style, and what types of shoes she had liked in the past. After listening carefully to her customer and zeroing in on what she needed and desired, Dorothy suggested several shoes. Ask yourself if this is the type of treatment you might get at a big box, self-serve shoe store.

There is a certified pedorthist on staff at Tufly’s Shoe Center. Dorothy calls pedorthists “pharmacists for the feet.” Pedorthists have completed additional educational and clinical training in the mechanics of the foot; they work with other healthcare professionals to ensure that each customer is evaluated correctly regarding foot needs.

One of the solutions for balance or gait difficulties is molded orthotics. At Tufly’s Shoe Center, your orthotics are fitted and molded to your own foot. Orthotics are fit specifically for each customer and are made in the inhouse lab. Orthotics can help customers who are suffering from pain in their feet, knees, hips, and back.

Shoe manufacturers are listening to men and women who are demanding great style, fit, and comfort in their daily footwear. The greatly expanded Finn Comfort line, made in Germany, is known as the ultimate therapy shoe,

improving posture and muscle function. Several years ago, I had a colleague who was going to Italy for three weeks. She asked me what kind of walking shoes to take with her. I referred her to Tufly’s Shoe Center, where she purchased a red pair of Finn Comfort sandals. She later told me that those shoes were the best investment she made for that trip. Finns have removable insoles, allowing you to put in your own custom insoles, if needed. That way, you can have great arch support and a stylish shoe.

Other brands available at the store include Brooks, Dansko, Cobb Hill, Drew, Monroe, Dunham, Saucony, Drew, Naot, and Fidelio. Danskos are popular with professionals in the medical, culinary, and teaching fields. Finn Comfort’s Finnamic line of stability rocker sole shoes are a very important line for people who need relief from plantar fasciitis, pain in the metatarsal of the mid foot, and arthritis problems. The Tuflys are particularly impressed with the Fidelio, Finn Comfort, and Drew brands. They are all made with soft stretch leathers, which are ideal for individuals with bunions or hammer toes.

Tufly’s carries all styles of shoes, including workout, casual dress, business casual, and special occasion shoes. The office collections are especially popular with male and female young professionals. Young or old, working or retired, active or relaxed—no matter what your style, you’ll find shoes at Tufly’s that fit your needs. Alan and Dorothy are happy to place special orders, and they keep notes about your purchases for future reference. They’re eager to help you find a shoe that keeps those dogs from barking. Shoes that address your foot pain can still have a “Wow!” factor. Remember that 10,000-step journey? It begins with a first step to Tufly’s Shoe Center.

Visit Tufly’s Shoe Center at 16909 Lakeside Hills Plaza, in Omaha. For more information, call 402-614-2221 or visit www.TuflyShoeCenter.com.

about women written for women.

The bitter sweetness of the life and times of Lydia Bryan is a disarmingly honest narrative of a woman’s experiences in extraordinary times. Her distinct outlook on nature, relationships, and the human condition transports her through many troublesome times.

Perfect for fans of women’s fiction, this masterfully told tale will pull you in from the beginning.

August 23–September 22 VIRGO

Many of the zodiac signs are dealing with challenges this month. Virgo is no exception, but a positive outcome is coming! You should benefit from a situation or a set of circumstances this month that involves very little effort on your part—nevertheless, you seem destined to profit in some way or another. Circumstances may seem unsettling, but don’t turn your back on good luck!

Libra (Sept. 22 – Oct. 22) This month, you need to take action on a currently unsettled situation. It’s not going to go away just because you’re choosing not to deal with it. Sometimes, change is the only answer. Take the first step.

Scorpio (Oct. 22 – Nov. 21) You may be doubting the role you have played within a certain set of circumstances at work, but continue to play your part. Actions speak louder than words.

Sagittarius (Nov. 21 – Dec. 21) Don’t push your troubles under the carpet this month. Bring them out into the open and do your best to deal with them. Don’t be too ambitious, though—a small amount of progress builds the foundation for success!

Capricorn (Dec. 21 – Jan. 20) You have the capacity for greatness this month. Save your strength and energy for the right opportunity, and be sure to look before you leap.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 19) Some people interpret your tenacious tendencies as stubbornness. You are often ahead of the pack, and it may take time for others to come around to your point of view. Take it slow. Calm persistence will help others see the light.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – Mar. 21) Your current crisis can be addressed through perseverance. You tend to take on too many of other people’s issues and worries. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Your crisis will pass.

Aries (Mar. 21 – Apr. 20) Rams like to feel they are in control, and the fear of losing control drives them to action. There will be a surprise this month—one that you will have no control over. The best course of action for you and the people around you is to just go with the flow.

Taurus (Apr. 20 – May 21) Relationships are on the horizon this month. You’ll need to decide how much to participate in new ones and how much energy to spend maintaining older ones. Take time for what’s important and have faith in those close to you.

Gemini (May 21 – Jun. 21) This is not the time to indulge your tendency to scheme. Base this month’s choices on what is realistic and reliable. Someone from the past could have you overturning a recent decision! Be cautious.

Cancer (Jun. 21 – Jul. 22) September will be a challenging time for authority figures. Stay the course and let your inner light shine. You may want to keep your opinion to yourself when disagreement occurs. Eventually, things will turn in your favor.

Leo (Jul. 22 – Aug. 22) Putting others before yourself will benefit you in the long run. This altruistic attitude will reward you—maybe even financially. When you spend your energy on others, you don’t dwell on your own challenges. Something you were trying to avoid now seems less problematic!

Behind the Name Behind the Music

Band Names Uncovered

I have always wondered how bands choose their names. Some are fairly self-explanatory— Bon Jovi is named after the band’s lead singer, Jon Bon Jovi (actual name: Bongiovi). However, some of my favorite bands have names that baffled me. I decided to look them up!

ABBA: A, B, B, and A are the first letters of the first names of the band members: Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Anderson, and Anni-Frid (Frida) Lyngstad.

Aerosmith: Drummer Joey Kramer was inspired by the 1968 Henry Nilsson album Aerial Ballet. He liked the sound of “aero-something” and someone suggested “aerosmith.” He proceeded to write the name all over his notebooks during high school and eventually suggested the name to the group we know as Aerosmith.

Air Supply: This soft rock duo from Australia consists of Englishman Graham Russell and Australian Russell Hitchcock. The name of the group came from a dream that Graham had— he saw a billboard with flashing lights all around it and the words AIR SUPPLY in the center.

Bay City Rollers: Like many bands, this Scottish group went through a few changes in lineups and names before they found a winning combination. They had decided to call themselves The Rollers but wanted a great city name to go with it. They threw a dart at a U.S. map, and it landed on Bay City,

Michigan.

The Beatles: There are more than a few back stories circulating about the origin of this band’s name. A fairly reliable one suggests that original band member Stuart Sutcliffe came up with The Beetles in 1960, which was a play on Buddy Holly and the Crickets. John Lennon is generally credited with combining “beetles” and “beat” to come up with the Beatles spelling.

Coldplay: This quartet originally performed as Starfish. A friend suggested the new name, which comes from Philip Horky’s 1997 book of poetry called Child’s Reflections, Cold Play.

Duran Duran: This 1980s superband is named after supervillain Durand Durand, the evil scientist in the 1968 movie Barbarella that starred Jane Fonda.

Hootie and the Blowfish: These are the nicknames of two buddies of frontman Darius Rucker—Hootie, who had big round glasses that made him look like an owl, and Blowfish, who had round, puffy cheeks. Rucker has said in interviews that it didn’t occur to him at the time that fans would think he was Hootie.

Journey: This San Francisco band started as a backup group called Golden Gate Rhythm Section. When they decided to perform as their own band, they held an unsuccessful radio contest to name the group. Eventually, a roadie named John Villanueva suggested the name Journey.

Foreigner: British guitarist Mick Jones came up with the name because his bandmates were two British men and three American men. Whether they played in England or the United States, he reasoned, some of them would be foreigners.

Mötley Crüe: This name came from guitarist Mick Mars, who remembered that someone had called his old band “a motley-looking crew.” After adjusting the spelling and adding some umlauts that were supposedly inspired by their favorite beer (Löwenbräu), they became Mötley Crüe.

The Police: According to the biography of drummer Stewart Copeland, it was Copeland himself who decided to call the band The Police. The name was provocative, as fights between law enforcement and young “punks” were commonplace at the time.

REO Speedwagon: REO Speed Wagon was a model name for a line of trucks built by REO Motors Corporation of Lansing, Michigan. Ransom Eli Olds (REO) left Oldsmobile, the company he founded, to form REO in 1904. Band member Neal Doughty had seen the name on the chalkboard in his undergraduate History of Transportation class.

The Rolling Stones: This immortal band’s name comes from the Muddy Waters song Rollin’ Stone. The story goes that the name was suggested at the last minute by guitarist Brian Jones. He was on the phone with a magazine to promote the band’s big break when he realized they didn’t have a name. He saw a Muddy Waters record on the floor, and the band was promoted as The Rollin’ Stones.

U2: In a recent podcast, U2 members Bono and The Edge explained that the band’s first name was The Hype, but they decided it sounded “unoriginal.”Their friend and graphic artist Steve Averill gave them a list of suggestions, and U2 was the one they “hated the least.” What they did like about it, The Edge said, is that it was “not obvious from the name what this band would sound like or be about. It felt fresh in that sense.”

I hope you enjoyed exploring these name origins with me! The stories behind the names of these bands are as diverse and entertaining as their music.

Lifetime Stone Restoration

Restoring Beauty to Natural Stone and Tile

The beauty and durability of natural stone and tile make them popular options for flooring, countertops, and showers. However, these products can become dingy, damaged, or worn over time. If you have natural stone or tile in your home that has lost its luster, don’t resign yourself to replacing it! First, call Lifetime Stone Restoration.

After years in the insurance industry, native Nebraskan Don Mlnarik was ready for a new challenge. Don considered several business opportunities before discovering that Omaha needed a local resource for restoring stone and tile in homes. He received field training with an established company before venturing out on his own, founding Lifetime Stone Restoration in 2008.

Lifetime Stone Restoration offers stone restoration work, tile and grout maintenance services, and shower and bathroom restoration services. Stone restoration services include polishing, sealing, color enhancing, and stripping, as well as repairing cracks, holes, chips, and seams. Tile and grout maintenance services include cleaning, sealing, grout repair, and recaulking. Shower and bathroom restoration services include cleaning, caulking, grout, and sealing.

Restoration begins with cleaning the stone and grout. Next, minor scratches and wear are removed through honing with specialized diamond pads, resulting in a matte or satin stone finish. If necessary, deep scratches and uneven tile edges are ground. Polishing restores a stone’s natural shine using natural methods without topical coatings.

Don uses a clear or colored penetrating sealer to protect and preserve stone. Stone and granite are porous, and a penetrating sealer enters the pores to help minimize stains and make cleaning easier. Colored sealers can darken, highlight, or enhance some natural stones. Stripping removes top coats such as janitorial wax, urethane, acrylics, and other items that diminish the natural look of stone. Cracks, holes, chips, and damaged seams can also be repaired.

Tile and grout in showers may lose their appeal because of soap buildup, mildew, or hard water deposits. Cleaning, repairing, or replacing caulk and grout can return tile to its original beauty. A penetrating clear or colored sealer protects grout and makes cleaning easier.

Don points out that sealing stone will help protect stone against staining. Penetrating sealers are a much better option than topical sealers since they will not show wear patterns and will keep the stones natural look. Penetrating sealers can last two to three years and help repel water and oil. Granite is different from other stones and should be sealed based on the quality and color of the granite. If stains have occurred to your stone, Don can usually remove them before resealing the surface.

When sealing grout, there are two options you can choose from. You can clear seal like you do with stone or you can color seal the grout with a color of your choosing. Color sealing will

last over 10 years and provides the best protection. Why choose Lifetime Stone Restoration? The company is locally owned and operated and is dedicated to providing quality work. “Since I am not part of a franchise, I have the freedom to do things the way I think they should be done, using the most up-to-date processes and products, instead of following a corporate protocol,” Don explains. He regularly engages in refresher training to keep current in his field. “It is important to understand the different types of stones and manmade products in order to service them properly.” Don works with clients throughout the process, from bidding to job completion.

Don believes that educating clients is an important part of his work. “I want my clients to know what type of stone or tile they have and how to maintain and care for it moving forward.” He also stresses the importance of selecting the correct type of stone for each home area. “A polished stone floor may not be the best choice for a lake home.”Traffic patterns and room use should be considered when choosing stone or tile.

Don’s philosophy for customer service is straightforward. “I always strive to do the best job possible. I am licensed and insured, provide free estimates, never increase a bid, provide timeline estimates, am prompt, and leave a house cleaner than when I started.”

Don offers advice for those looking to hire a stone restoration company. “Ask the company about their services, how long they have been in business, and whether they are licensed and insured.” He also stresses the importance of selecting someone who is knowledgeable about stone and about how to care for it. Additionally, he says, ask for references and before-and-after photos, and be sure to read some reviews from other customers.

Don loves seeing a client’s reaction to the finished project. “I often receive feedback from clients who think something has been ruined and cannot believe how good it looks after it has been restored,” he says. Why replace a product when you can save time, money, and resources with restoration?

Fall Cleaning Brings Autumn Bliss!

The Benefits of Hiring

Services

Before the evenings turn crisp and the leaves begin to fall, mark September on the calendar as a month to start fresh with fall cleaning. Whether your goals are to refresh and organize or to pass a white glove inspection, consider hiring professionals to get the job done right and done fast. Then you can spend your month relaxing in the great outdoors (or the clean indoors) before the white stuff flies. We’ve all heard,“clear your space, clear your mind.”Go ahead—you deserve it!

Fall cleaning is a tradition trending heavy in 2023. It’s the same idea as spring cleaning, but the focus is to make sure your home is ready for family and friends to spend a lot of time indoors. While you enjoyed the outdoors over the summer, dirt and grime settled inside. Clean up before the holiday rush and your mind will relax. Find simplicity in decluttering. Refresh the floors, the windows, and the rugs, and bask in a healthy environment.

Hiring a maid service is a great way to get a home that sparkles. Many professional house cleaners provide an extra level of attention if you ask for it. They can clear out bacteria and germs, restore tiles, clean hard-to-reach nooks and crannies, and remove allergens like dust mites or pet dander. Request eco-friendly cleaning products to reduce environmental impact and harsh chemicals inside of your home.

What exactly do maid services normally include? The list is endless if you’re specific about what you want. Tidying up playrooms or other messy areas? Check. Washing the blinds? Check. Scrubbing baseboards? Check. Cleaning the inside of the oven or washer and dryer? Yes! If your walls need a spot clean, just ask. If you’re planning a move, cleaning the departing residence or the new one is a must.

Home cleaning services can also include a deep clean inside and under kitchen appliances as well as the grit and grime underneath sinks. Bathrooms are another deep clean focus, with disinfectants for a fresh touch to toilets, showers, sinks, tile, and mirrors.

If you’re happy with your own regular cleaning routine and just need a maid service before or after a big event, they’ll be happy to accommodate a special cleaning. You can also schedule a regular cleaning appointment on a weekly basis to keep the house in good shape. Windows and mirrors are usually standard on the cleaning list, as are sweeping and mopping floors or vacuuming carpets and rugs. What about those cobwebs hanging from high ceilings? Hired services have the tools to remove those, too. Housekeepers can strip the bed and do the laundry, load the dishwasher, and empty it, too. Ask for whatever services you want and they’ll let you know if they are included or can be added on.

If dresser drawers and closets are where you need the most help, consider hiring a professional who specializes in

this type of purging, cleaning, and organizing. Professional organizers can also help you revamp the storage situation in the kitchen, pantry, playroom, or garage.

Carpet and rug stains are best left to a professional carpet or rug cleaner. Even if you regularly vacuum, professional rug and carpet cleaners bring out the big vacuums and pro stain removal techniques. They work magic on difficult stains such as coffee, red wine, ink, pet accidents, and dirt. Just once or twice a year, deep cleaning enhances the appearance of carpets and specialty rugs. Think of all the dirt and mud tracked in daily by your family, or the accumulation of pet dander, dust mites, and bacteria. You get the picture! A professional clean extends the life of carpet and rugs, removing buildup and allergens for a healthier house. That means a healthier you!

Ask your carpet pro which technique works best for your carpets and lifestyle. Steam cleaning uses hot water at a high pressure to penetrate the carpet fibers, breaking down dirt and bacteria before extracting via vacuum. Another tried and true option is carpet shampooing, resulting in a soapy foam clean before a wet vac to remove dirt. A dry vac normally follows to remove any leftover dirt or residue. There’s also a dry clean option, which uses an absorbent compound to break up dirt in the rug fibers.

Have a specialty rug that needs attention? Wool, silk, cotton, nylon, or Persian and Turkish rugs may need special care. Your rugs are an investment, and when they’re torn, worn, or soiled, it’s important to have professional rug cleaners revive them. Rug cleaners wash rugs with safe products, rinse, and spin dry. A special brush follows to set the nap. Need a little extra protection? Ask for a protectant such as Scotchgard water shield to build stain resistance from additional spills! That goes for carpets, too.

As a homeowner, you want to know and trust the people who enter your home to work. Interview maid services and rug cleaners before you hire, and keep in mind the safety precautions you need as a homeowner. A professional maid service should be bonded. That means that if a theft happens, you’re protected. Maid services should also be insured in case of a fall or other unfortunate accident on your property. The company’s liability insurance coverage helps the homeowner,

too. Ask if the home cleaning team is bonded and insured.

Find out how employees are screened before the company hires them. How many years has the cleaning service been in business? Have there been any complaints? Are there glowing reviews online? A little digging goes a long way when you’re planning to allow a professional into your home. Are guarantees standard for the cleaning company? Quality work and a safe protocol should be top priorities.

In addition to getting references from past clients, ask what kind of cleaning products are used. If you prefer no ammonia or bleach, state that before hiring. Green products are popular, but you won’t know if your service uses them unless you ask. Many products incorporate natural ingredients to get the job done, a plus for a healthy environment and home. Also ask if the vacuum equipment used has good filtration to remove allergens and bacteria from floors and carpets.

The right cleaning service should be able to customize their cleaning to fit your home. Older homes may require specialized tasks. Bigger homes require bigger cleaning tasks and, often, more frequent visits. How often should cleaning occur? The most popular answer is hiring a weekly or biweekly maid service. Once a month works fine if you simply require a deep clean, especially if you touch up in between cleanings. When you’re deciding how often to have your home cleaned, consider your budget, your tolerance level for messiness, and what constitutes “clean” in your mind.

Windows are a specialty item that might not fall under a maid service’s offerings. Experts advise having your windows cleaned, inside and out, once or twice a year. You’ll end up

with sparkling glass, but there are other reasons to keep our windows clean! As Architectural Digest points out, “Access to natural light can make or break a space. Not only will your space look better with sunlight streaming in, research suggests that sunny rays positively influence your health and happiness. Alternatively, grime, buildup, and otherwise dirty windows are a buzzkill when you’re trying to bask in that afternoon glow.”

A professional window cleaner has the cleaning products, tools, and expertise to clean your windows, including cleaning the exterior of windows on upper floors of the home. They will keep sliding window tracks free from debris and wipe grime from the hinges. Washing away fingerprints, water spots, allergens, dirt, and dander will lead to less maintenance further down the road. Window pros also check for cracks in the glass and make sure windows are structurally sound.

Offenders like soot from candles, fireplaces, cooking, and smoking accumulate over time, so it’s best to give them a fall cleaning and checkup. Cleaning improves efficiency, prevents expensive maintenance, and maintains a healthy glow to your home. Ask your window service if they also provide power washing, gutter cleaning, or window tinting, and if they can de-grime chandeliers and ceiling fans!

A cleaned house feels like a cleansed mind and soul. After the work is done, sit back, relax, and enjoy the autumn bliss!

Valle de Guadalupe The Napa Valley of Mexico

For those of you who are oenophiles, I know you are already planning to head to wine country for the stomping of the grapes and other harvest festivals. Have you considered Baja? That’s right—Baja California, Mexico. Many have not heard of the amazing wine valley just south of the border: Valle de Guadalupe. For those who want to visit the next up-andcoming wine scene, it’s well worth the two-hour drive from San Diego.

If you don’t want to drive across the border yourself, choose another way to get to Valle de Guadalupe. You can fly into Tijuana directly or make it an excursion from the Ensenada port on your next Mexican cruise. From there, you can rent a car, hop on a bus, or car-share your way through the 14mile Ruta del Vino. Better yet, contact your travel agent and have them book you a wine tour that leaves out of San Diego. Your agent will take care of everything!

What does the Valle de Guadalupe wine region have to offer? Well over a hundred wineries, with everything from Cabernet to Syrah and lesser-known varieties like Vermentino and Nebbiolo. Considered the Napa Valley of Mexico, this area produces most of Mexico’s wine. Valle de Guadalupe is located just northeast of Ensenada and manages to feel rugged, relaxed, and sophisticated—all at the same time. The vineyards are set back just far enough from the Pacific Ocean that the region is hot and dry but gets a cool ocean breeze in the evenings. It is the perfect Mediterranean-like climate for growing grapes.

oramic valley views? The Valle de Guadalupe offers lodging options for all budgets and tastes.

Are you in it to find your next favorite Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Zinfandel, or Cabernet? These are just a few among the varieties found in Valle de Guadalupe. You can also enjoy Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Malbec, Barbera, Grenache, and Merlot. There really is something for everyone.

You will become a pro at using the five S’s of wine tasting: see, swirl, sniff, sip, and savor.

Realistically, it is typical to only visit three to four wineries per day. How will you decide which ones to visit? Will you explore based on grape variety, locale, or brand? Are you the type to decide on a whim as you drive past? Personally, I love to do pairings of food and wine or wine and chocolate, so I choose at least two of the wineries based on the locations that offer pairings in a scenic setting or buzzing atmosphere.

Production in Valle de Guadalupe is not solely Mexican wine. As far back as the 1700s, immigrants from Russia, Italy, and other European countries settled in the area with their own grape varieties and took advantage of the rich soil. Make a stop at the Museum of Vine and Wine and learn all about the history, culture, and industry of this fascinating wine region.

The area has boomed in the past several decades, transforming it into a paradise for people who love wine and food. Choose from among large and small commercial vineyards as well as boutique and artisan winemakers. You can even stop to buy bottles from vendors on the side of the road! Couple your tours and tastings with some outstanding restaurants— did I mention the fresh local seafood?—and you are in for a fantastic trip.

You’ll find fascinating lodging options here. Would you like to experience something like a B&B at a vineyard? Or unique architecture like a room built out of a cave with pan -

You will have to do some exploring to find what you like. When you do find something you love, stock up! Mexico does not export much of its wine, so if you like it, buy it. Taking photos of wine bottle labels for future reference is helpful, too.

When you come back for your second visit, make sure to book it during the annual Fiestas de la Vendimia Valle de Guadalupe (harvest festival) that runs late July through August. Here, you will experience the largest wine festivals in Latin America, where local wineries, internationally renowned chefs, and the most prestigious restaurants in Mexico meet. You will become a pro at using the five S’s of wine tasting: see, swirl, sniff, sip, and savor.

One thing that I have learned when it comes to wine is that no one should tell you what you should like. That is for you to personally decide. Everyone’s tastes are different, and what one person loves, another may not. When you visit Valle de Guadalupe, follow the signs and take an adventurous offroad path to discover your next new favorite vineyard!

The Instruction Book

Being Happy and Purposeful Takes Practice

A man named H. Jackson Brown, Jr., once wrote a few suggestions down for his son, Adam. Here’s the story: The book began as a gift to Adam as he packed his belongings for a new life as a college freshman. Meanwhile, Mr. Brown jotted down a few observations and “words of counsel”that he thought would be useful to his son. Careful to remember that it was not the responsibility of parents to pave the road for their children but rather to provide a road map, he was hopeful that his son would use these reflections of the mind and heart that he had himself found sustaining.

The project that he hoped would only take a few hours eventually was finished after several days. He gathered up his collection of handwritten notes and typed them. He put the finished notes into an inexpensive binder, walked to the garage, and slid the binder under the front seat of the family’s station wagon.

A few days later, Mr. and Mrs. Brown helped their son move into his new dorm room. After unpacking and settling in, Mr. Brown asked his son to accompany him to the parking lot. It was, Mr. Brown remembers, a very special moment. He reached under the car seat, and with words to the effect that this was what he knew about living a happy and rewarding life, presented the bound pages to his son. Naturally, there were hugs and the shaking of hands and a general feeling of love.

Amazingly, these 511 suggestions and observations eventually became a book. Like all writers who expose their hearts and thoughts, Mr. Brown knew that not everyone would agree with all of the entries. We all have different experiences and approach our lives and the decisions we make with varied wisdom and insight. If you’ve ever read “Life’s Little Instruction Book,” you can probably add at least four or five hundred more of these little instructions. What purpose do these little instructions serve? They add a certain degree of joy, meaning, and efficiency to our lives.

Back to Mr. Brown and his son. A few days after Mr. Brown presented Adam with his personal copy, Adam called home from his dorm.“Dad,” he said,“I’ve been reading the Instruction Book, and I think it’s one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. I’m going to add to it and someday give it to my son.” Even the most cynical heart cannot deny that both father and son had just experienced a precious moment. Isn’t this what life is all about? Those unexpected and unrehearsed expressions to each other are like little shining stars in our lives.

If you are fortunate enough to own a copy of “Life’s Little Instruction Book,” get it out and dust it off. You might be surprised that you are already practicing Mr. Brown’s ideas on living a terrific life. Remember, it takes more than simply reading and nodding,“Ah, yes.” Being happy, joyful, and purposeful takes practice. That’s where the fun begins. Don’t be surprised if you find a few personal favorites. Here are some truly wonderful excerpts from the book:

Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen every day. It can be tough waiting for miracles, but giving up on someone is akin to losing faith. If you give up, there’s nothing to look forward to. Keep hoping for that miracle. Remember, miracles come in all sizes.

Be brave. Even if you’re not, pretend to be. No one can tell the difference. Life seems to require courage, and we sometimes tire of being told to be brave. You never know. You might be braver than you think.

Think big thoughts, but relish small pleasures. Enough small pleasures rolled up together can be pretty impressive. After all, it’s the little things that matter. Learn to listen. Opportunity sometimes knocks very softly. Pay close attention and use your keen sense of observation. Rarely are things just what they seem. Very often, there are things afoot, and we need to look and listen closely to observe them. More often than not, it’s worth the extra effort.

Never deprive someone of hope, it may be all they have. When things get rough, most of us thrive on hope. Like faith, hope softens many blows and gives us the courage to move through life’s ups and downs.

Avoid negative people. These folks can be a real drain on your energy and outlook. Who hasn’t tried to rehabilitate a negative coworker or neighbor? Usually, the effort is unsuccessful. Instead, your personal energy might be better used elsewhere.

Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know. Go ahead. Give it a try. Thinking and acting positive is contagious. Before you know it, you’ll feel so much better and so will everyone around you. It’s fun!

Don’t major in minor things. This advice is for those of us who are picky, picky, picky. Try to look at the big picture. Nothing in life is perfect, but, for the most part, life is sweet. Leave everything a little better than you found it. This is the wish of most of us. As parents and citizens, we hope to improve the quality of life for the next generation. Keep it simple. Lots of people today are capitalizing on this concept. It’s a good truth and an excellent idea to live by. As everything becomes more complicated, we all strive for the beauty of simplicity.

H. Jackson Brown, Jr. and his family were generous in passing on their good thoughts for a good life. Take some time to invent a few “life instructions” for yourself.

Don’t Get Burned

Let the Sun Shine But

We all love to be outside. Soaking up fresh air and sunshine can be rejuvenating and energizing. However, too much time in the sun can have damaging effects on the skin. Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light damages the skin’s elastin fibers, causing the skin to sag, stretch, and lose its elasticity. The skin also bruises and tears more easily, taking longer to heal. Sun damage may not be apparent when you’re young, but it will definitely appear later in life. Too much sun also increases your risk of developing skin cancer. It’s important to know how to protect yourself from those damaging rays, what the risk factors are, and how to treat sun-damaged skin.

People who have a history of frequent sunburns or who have spent a lot of time outdoors are likely to have sun-damaged skin. Individuals with light skin, eyes, and hair are at higher risk due to the lower amount of protective melanin in their system. Redheads are particularly susceptible. Where you live is also relevant. Dry climates with lots of year-round sunshine take a toll on your skin. Certain medications, including oral contraceptives, acne treatments, and some antibiotics, increase your risk for sun damage.

You can protect yourself from harmful rays by limiting your time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the most intense. Wear long-sleeved shirts, sunglasses, and broad-brimmed hats. Most importantly, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of

at least 15. Fair-skinned individuals may want an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunscreen should be applied at least 15 minutes before going outdoors. Cover your entire body, including your ears, hands, the tops of your feet, along the hairline, and any areas of the head exposed by balding or thinning hair. Reapply every two hours (more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating).

It’s also important to protect your eyes from the sun. UV rays can cause premature aging of the delicate skin around the eyes and may lead to eyelid skin cancer. The sun can also cause other serious eye conditions, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and a corneal sunburn condition called keratitis. Protect your peepers by wearing UVA- and UVB-light blocking sunglasses. Wear a hat with at least a three-inch brim, and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least

Dermatologists utilize a variety of treatments to reduce the appearance of sun damage. Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure used to improve overall skin tone and texture. A special applicator with an abrasive gently sands away the thick outer layer of the skin to rejuvenate it. Laser resurfacing uses a laser to improve the skin’s appearance or treat minor facial flaws. Topical retinoids improve the production of skin cells and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Retinoids can increase sun sensitivity and should be used at night or while using a good sunscreen during the day.

Familiarize yourself with how skin cancer looks, particularly if you are in a high-risk group. Examine your skin from head to toe every few months to check for suspicious growths, spots, or moles that have changed in size, shape, color, or texture.

Melanoma, one of the most serious types of skin cancer, can appear as a small, dark spot with irregular borders; as a cluster of shiny, firm, dark bumps; or as a mole larger than a pencil eraser. Basal cell carcinoma may manifest itself as a flesh-colored oval bump with a rolled border, a smooth red spot indented in the center, or a reddish-brown patch of skin. Squamous cell carcinoma may appear as a firm, reddish, wart-like bump; a flat spot that becomes a bleeding sore that won’t heal; or a new skin growth or open sore that doesn’t heal within six weeks.

The type of skin cancer you have will help your doctor determine how to treat it. Cancerous tissue and some surrounding normal skin may be surgically removed in your doctor’s office. Cryotherapy is used to treat superficial cancers. Liquid nitrogen is applied to the area, freezing the cancerous tissue. The frozen skin blisters and falls off. Radiation therapy treats cancers that aren’t easily removed through surgery. Multiple treatments may be needed. Laser surgery uses beams of light to destroy the cancer. It’s not uncommon for your doctor to use more than one treatment method.

Contact your physician or dermatologist for guidance in minimizing and treating sun damage. In the meantime, with a bit of precaution, you can still get outside and enjoy the warmth of the sun on your skin.

Your Home, in the Very Best Light Home Lighting Trends 2023

an evening dinner party. With such diverse lighting requirements, it’s important to think in terms of layering light.

Layering involves the use of multiple light sources to create the desired atmosphere. Ambient, task, and accent lighting all serve different purposes. A ceiling-mounted fixture and recessed can lights, combined with under-cabinet lighting and pendants over the island, combine to provide three sources of lighting. Adding dimmer switches to each source of lighting increases the level of control to get lighting just right.

Why is this? Lighting has a biological and physical impact on the well-being of humans. Good lighting stabilizes our circadian rhythm, contributing to a better night’s sleep. Good lighting helps alleviate depression and can even increase cognition time.

When planning lighting, step one is to understand the purpose of a space. Today, many rooms within our homes serve multiple purposes. Take, for example, the modern kitchen, where lighting needs range from making coffee before dawn to doing homework at the kitchen island after school to hosting

It’s typically a good idea to include three sources of lighting in a room. This can include overhead or pendant lighting, specific task or table lighting, and ambient lighting from sconces or accents. Blending in sources of natural light through windows brings the best of all worlds. Skylights are a terrific way to introduce additional natural light, in addition to adding energy efficiency and improved ventilation. Skylights can significantly increase home value, making them a smart investment for homeowners.

Lighting is no longer just about creating functional spaces and enhancing design features. Thanks to science, we now recognize the profound impact of lighting; how it can affect our mood, making us feel excited and energized or calm and relaxed. The power of lighting controls how people experience a space by controlling the emotion, energy, and flow within it. Enter a room finished with friendly and inviting light and you’ll instantly feel at ease. Enter the same room with poor or harsh lighting and your mood immediately darkens.
Lighting is an important feature of any well-designed space. This transformative design element can elevate great design to spectacular design! Lighting can make or break a space, yet integrating lighting into a design plan is often an afterthought. Choosing the right lighting for your home is vital! We’ve unraveled much of the mystery behind achieving great lighting with illuminating ideas on how to create lighting magic in your home.

Designers tell us that homeowners are increasingly seeking unique statement pieces that create maximum impact. There’s a growing demand for one-of-a-kind showstoppers in unusual shapes and made of unique materials. These fixtures are art forms in their own right, enriching and elevating a space with visual interest and modern design. Nature-inspired design in soft sculptural shapes brings fluidity to a room, helping create relaxed spaces that are inviting and warm.

Design is moving toward a more maximalist style, with designers and homeowners curating spaces that are rich with color, pattern, and texture. Lighting trends are reflecting this eclectic aesthetic in the form of colorful table lamps and patterned shades. A mix of floor and table lamps, each embodying a distinct color and style, creates a unique and welcoming space. The fixtures, sconces, and lamps are the jewelry of the room! They lend personality to a space, so have some fun with these accent pieces.

Smart lights have become a core component of the modern home. Operated by apps on your phone or tablet, smart lighting offers convenience, ease, and efficiency. Other smart lighting options include motion and lighting sensors that automatically turn on and off when people enter or exit or when light level changes are detected. The most advanced smart systems learn behavior and adapt to the everyday habits of a home’s occupants, coming on automatically at certain times of the day. There are dozens of smart lighting options for homeowners to choose from, including smart bulbs, switches, dimmers, and lamps, all the way up to whole-home smart lighting systems.

When designing your space, lighting should be addressed from the very beginning. Collaboration between a lighting designer or an interior designer and any other professionals in your project will ensure everyone is on the same page for a smooth-running process and an amazing result.

With the ability to affect the size, shape, and mood of a space, good lighting is an essential design element. Well-designed lighting ensures that you and your family will enjoy the ultimate comfort in your home and experience heightened well-being. When the time comes to sell your home, you’ll enjoy a good return on your well-designed lighting investment.

Live A Pain-Free Life Professional Pain Management Can Help!

The pains of getting older, or the painful effects of a disease like cancer, or pain from an injury— no matter the cause of our pain, we don’t have to resign ourselves to a life filled with pain. We owe it to ourselves to learn what options are available to help. Pain management is when someone’s pain is systematically addressed with the use of medications, therapies, exercise, or holistic procedures. A pain management doctor may use a combination of these methods to manage a patient’s pain. Even if it is not possible to provide total relief, anyone with pain can benefit from a pain management plan. We just need to find what works best for us!

Pain management specialists help you regulate pain with medications, procedures, exercises, and therapy. To reduce or relieve pain, your provider may recommend one approach or a combination of several. You may receive care in a pain clinic, a provider’s office, or a hospital. Pain can last a short time and go away when you heal (acute pain), or it can last for months or years (chronic pain). The most common conditions for which a pain management plan is used include arthritis, back pain, migraines or headaches, acute pain, and cancer.

Opioid abuse and addiction have become serious problems in the United States, and the medical community is taking a hard look at the use of opioids. For years, opioids were widely prescribed and were considered an excellent solution for pain sufferers. Now, we know that opioids are highly addictive and should not be the first treatment option. Having a pain management plan in place that offers non-pharmaceutical options is ideal.

When medications are taken, it is important for the patient to only take medications as prescribed, not share their medications with others, and only use one doctor and pharmacy to eliminate potentially negative medication interactions and ensure they are not being over-medicated. Patients should go over their medication list with their provider regularly and ask plenty of questions. It is also a good idea to talk to the pharmacist about any possible adverse reactions to watch for when taking several drugs at once to manage pain.

A solid pain management plan may include pain patches, nerve blocks, or drug therapy.

Pain patches have an adhesive back that sticks to the skin. The patch slowly releases a certain amount of medication into the bloodstream. It can be a good option for someone who has stomach issues and cannot tolerate oral medication. The use of a pain patch should be taken seriously. The medication released in some

Make A Wish.indd 1 2/9/22 4:10 PM

pain patches is fentanyl, which is a highly addictive opioid. Other patches release the anesthetic lidocaine.

Nerve blocks are injections that disrupt pain signals to the brain, giving the patient both pain relief and time to heal. They are commonly used after orthopedic surgery. Depending on what hurts, someone may receive a nerve block three to six times over a one-year period.

Drug therapy is simply a personalized combination of over-the-counter and prescription drugs to manage pain. Botox is sometimes used as migraine treatment.

A plan management plan may also include one or several non-pharmaceutical options like myofascial release, acupuncture, biofeedback therapy, massage therapy, hypnosis, or meditation.

Myofascial tissue is a thin, strong, fibrous tissue that runs throughout the body and provides support and protection to the muscles and bones. Myofascial release is a hands-on therapy that releases tightness and pain throughout the myofascial tissues. The practitioner locates trigger points, or knots, in the fascial tissues and applies gentle pressure until the tension is released.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese treatment during which thin needles are inserted into the skin at specific points on the body to interrupt pain signals. It usually takes regular treatments to be effective and should only be performed by a certified acupuncturist. If you can’t find one in your area, check with local chiropractors—they may also have acupuncture training.

Biofeedback therapy uses electrode monitoring to help patients learn to control things like muscle tension, thus relieving associated pain. It can be very effective for certain conditions such as tension headaches and migraines and is usually coupled with relaxation training.

Massage therapy can help with muscular pain and when someone’s pain is made worse by stress and anxiety. Similarly, hypnosis can help manage the fear and anxiety related to pain. It redirects someone’s attention away from the sensation of pain. Meditation can also offer pain relief through relaxation and redirected attention.

Whatever the cause of your pain, find a treatment that reduces or eliminates your pain. It may take time and patience, but your body will thank you!

The Secret Lives of Grandmas

Happy Grandparents’ Day

When someone says “grandma,” what image comes to your mind? Is it a picture of a sweet little old lady with her gray hair fashioned into a bun behind her head? Is she wearing an apron with a pocketful of hankies or tissues? In your imagination, I’ll bet she’s busy baking lots of your favorite cookies and then allowing you to consume as many as you want…just before you go home to Mom and Dad.

For many of us who have lived for more than a few decades, this may well sound exactly like our grandmas. Today, there is a new creature out there. Granny may still be sweet and kind and be full of good advice (as well as being armed with cookies), but she probably doesn’t spend much of her day wearing an apron. As for tissues, she most likely expects you to get your own. Those cookies that used to fill our tummies have been replaced by fruits and yogurt or other healthier snacks. Have you noticed today’s grand -

mothers expect everyone to do their own dishes and clean up after themselves? Well, it’s about time. After all, Grandma or Granny or whatever you call her is neither a family employee nor a woman bound over to servitude. Grandma doesn’t sit at home in a rocker anymore, but she still rocks! The modern grandma probably works or

volunteers at least part-time. Today, many people are working longer than in the past, and this includes senior women. Women “of a certain age” have so much to bring to the world of work, whether they are in the corporate world, education, or another field. Their years of experience have brought them valuable skills and knowledge, making them ideal employees. Grandmas these days are also probably still into whatever sporting activities or exercise groups they enjoyed when they were younger. Pilates classes and cardio groups are full of grandmothers!

We have to admit that grandmas have lives of their own. Although their adult children and grandchildren remain important elements in their lives, they have developed and maintained interests outside the family group. Have we been abandoned by Grandma? No, we have not. Instead, her life experiences enhance what she has to offer to her family and make her a more interesting and compelling person. Of course, one of the wonderful blessings of an independent grandma is that she is so often willing to share her experiences with us.

So, what do grandmas think about when they are out there in the world without us? Well, of course, they are thinking about us…all the time. That’s a given! However, they are also making plans and learning about the world around them. They participate in adventures or gatherings that stimulate their minds and keep them interested in new ideas that offer knowledge and skills from which women “of a certain age” used to be excluded.

There is nothing better than spending time with someone who has a good supply of life experiences and is broad-minded. These people are fun! Let me tell you, most of the grandmas I know are extremely fun and inquisitive people, always ready for what is around the next corner. They’ve broken out of the old “grandma” mold, and they’re more interesting for having done it!

What do grandmas do when they are not participating in family functions or events? Many of these women like to travel, and many of them travel worldwide. They make new friends and try new endeavors. It’s true that these gals have a few extra years and few extra miles on them, but that is certainly no reason for them to stay at home!

If you want to acknowledge or honor your granny, any day of the year is appropriate and will be welcomed by her. Be sure you call ahead to make advance arrangements with this special lady—she might be out traveling the world. Of course, even if you can only catch her on the phone, she’s sure to appreciate the fact that you called to say hello and hear all about her latest adventures.

Sunday, September 10, is Grandparents’ Day. It doesn’t get a lot of press, but why not use it as a good starting point to share some quality time with Grandma on a regular basis? Of course, while you’re at it, don’t forget Granddad. After all, he’s a pretty cool cat, himself.

If you are blessed with grandparents, give them the most precious gifts of time and of yourself. To all the grandmas and grandpas out there, have a wonderful Grandparents’ Day!

Aging With Amenities

High-End Retirement Communities

How would you like to spend your golden years with the amenities of an all-inclusive resort?

With an upscale senior living arrangement, every day will feel like a vacation. Whether it’s a 55+ community, an independent apartment, or assisted living, the goal is living life to the fullest.

You may have a senior family member who is considering a move or you may be looking ahead to your own retirement. While some seniors prefer to stay in their own homes, others happily opt to downsize and relinquish the cooking, cleaning, yard work, and home maintenance.

Today’s seniors have never had so many choices for stylish retirement living. For those able to live independently, the options might include communities of townhomes or apartments specially designed for seniors. They truly resemble resorts, with golf, swimming, and entertainment. Beautiful accommodations and chef-prepared meals with lots of social activities are typical.

A retirement community near me is representative of today’s high-end offerings. It consists of all-inclusive, independent apartments. You might think you are on a holiday cruise! You’ll enjoy gourmet dining for special occasions and chef-prepared buffets for casual dining. Friends are welcome to join.

Check out the movie theater, fitness center, library, and hair salon on site, and the 24/7 services include front desk and concierge. Enjoy a full calendar of activities plus shopping, pharmacy,

and banking nearby. Cable TV and Wi-Fi are included, as is weekly housekeeping. Beautiful landscaping and walking trails add opportunities for healthy, outdoor enjoyment.

This particular community has a monthly rental arrangement with no “buy-in.” It offers flexibility and lower upfront costs. Other retirement communities may require a one-time buy-in up front plus a monthly fee.

One specialized type of facility that may require a buy-in is a Continuing Care Retirement Community (sometimes called Life Plan Community). With a buy-in at a CCRC, one can begin in an independent apartment but move to assisted living or nursing care if needed without leaving the campus. A fixed monthly fee may cover any care needed in the future. Keep in mind that contracts can vary! It is essential to understand the terms before making a commitment. Secure legal advice, if needed.

The main attractions of a retirement community are the safe environment and amenities that make life enjoyable. When you leave the cooking and cleaning to staff, you have time to pursue hobbies and satisfying social activities.

Location may be a significant factor in the choice of retirement living. Sophisticated urban dwellers may wish to maintain their connections to the arts and theater in their community. They may prefer upscale shopping and planned travel activities. Others may enjoy the quieter suburban life of friendly neighborhoods with opportunities to learn new skills or participate in clubs or classes.

For those who need a little more support, upscale assisted living may be the answer. Enjoy all the amenities of a spacious, independent apartment plus assistance with such things as bathing, dressing, and medication management. Physical therapy or occupational therapy may be offered.

Many senior living arrangements are now offering memory care, as well. They have all the amenities plus extra safety and security measures. Activities are designed to help with memory. A newer concept is that of gender-specific memory care— for example, women residents only, with all-female staffing.

More retirement communities are welcoming pets because they realize how important pets can be to many seniors. If you want to bring your pet (or strongly prefer a no-pets policy), be sure to ask in advance.

When helping a loved one find a senior living arrangement, consider enlisting the services of a company that specializes in finding the best solution tailored to their needs. Advisors are well versed in all the local options. They can answer questions and set up tours. There is no cost to you, as they are compensated by the community that is ultimately chosen.

Experts recommend starting early to consider options for retirement living. Your community of choice may have a waiting list. Also, it is much easier to begin downsizing before the need is urgent.

Many services are now available to help you through the whole process. Professionals who specialize in downsizing or moving for seniors can save much stress and strain. Their services might include help with organizing possessions and arranging donations or sales. They can help with packing and unpacking. They can recommend cleaning services to help after the move and realtors to assist with the sale of a property.

How fortunate we are to have highend retirement communities! Seniors can maintain their independence while enjoying five-star amenities to make the most of the leisure years they’ve earned.

Cuddly Critters

Aquarium Fish Delightful, Soothing Companions

If you have ever spent time in a home, office, or waiting room that had a beautiful fish tank, you already know that they are fascinating and mesmerizing. Have you considered adding one to your home?

A fish tank adds an attention-grabbing focal point no matter where it’s located. Caring for fish in an aquarium is not just interesting; it offers healthful benefits.

The movements of the living creatures in the tank is engrossing and quite relaxing. Three decades of studies have identified the positive effects that aquariums provide for people with high blood pressure. The reductions achieved in lowering hypertension are significant.

If you’re ready to dive in, take the best first step: find a trustworthy source of aquarium knowledge who can help you make the decisions involved. A nearby shop that specializes in tanks, fish, and the equipment necessary to put everything together is a great place to begin. You can find an adviser to help you get started and offer guidance as needed.

To succeed with the setup, remember what fish need: water, food, regulated day and night cycles, and an environment that offers room to move, lay eggs, and rest.

Your first choice is between a freshwater or saltwater aquarium. Either type can house beautiful fish, and you’ll need to pay attention to several elements in the water even if you have a freshwater tank (you don’t just fill it from the tap). One consideration is that saltwater tanks are most successful if they’re 30 gallons or larger, while freshwater tanks can be as small as a two-gallon fishbowl.

Aquariums come in various sizes and shapes, so you’ll need to consider your space. A 50-gallon aquarium is usually 36 inches long by 20 inches high by 15 inches wide, and it weighs about 100 pounds when it’s full of water. In most cases, it’s best to start on the smaller side, with two or three fish in a 10-gallon tank. (Make sure your apparently small fish are fully grown, not just immature.) Overcrowding a tank can stress your fish and make it hard to keep the tank clean. As your fish skills and interest in your hobby grow, you can increase tank size.

As you choose species, learn their habits first. Do they need some same-species company? If you’re mixing species, are they compatible? Some species are omnivores; some are loners; some like to hide. As you consider species of fish, ask your expert for help choosing.

Popular freshwater species include neon tetras, guppies, mollies, goldfish, angelfish, golden dwarf barbs, and rainbow fish. Be sure to check on compatibility among species.

A great starter fish for saltwater aquariums is the Gramma loreto, a member of the basslet family. It is a hardy, active swimmer. It spends much of its time in open water, not hiding in the weeds, so it generally puts on a good show for whoever is gazing into the tank. Other popular saltwater species include clownfish, damselfish, and cardinalfish. Each has varieties with different colors and markings.

Aquariums generally have installed lights to control regular day and night cycles. Aquariums do not need sunlight; in fact, sunlight promotes the growth of algae in your tank, which brings disease and can kill your fish. You may add aquatic plants to enhance the waterscape. Be sure to arrange this carefully. Your fish need room to swim! If you add plants to your aquarium, you’ll need to keep them trimmed and healthy.

A filter is necessary to help clean the water and keep circulation going in your tank. You will need to provide regular cleaning by removing debris from all surfaces of the tank. A tank vacuum is a very useful tool for this. Experts recommend leaving your fish in the aquarium while you’re cleaning, so you need to be careful of your fish when vacuuming. Remove your landscaping and scrub it. Never use soap; it is toxic to fish. Scrub the insides of the tank and vacuum the flooring.

Aquarium water needs to be replaced on a regular schedule, but don’t replace it all at one (this stresses your fish). Replace about one-fourth of the water each week. With a small tank, you can likely manage the cleaning on your own. Your aquarium expert can recommend professional tank cleaners as you increase your tank size and your community of fish.

Once you have your tank set up properly and get to know your fish, you will realize how much you can enjoy your chosen fish for what they do best: eat, breed, and, of course, swim.

Chicken Little and the Fed Oh, The Sky Is Always Falling

About a year ago, the Fed began raising interest rates in order to reduce the hyperinflation the U.S. economy experienced following the end of the war on COVID-19. They met on a monthly basis and voted on their next move, and the results were immediately announced to the general public. Several days prior to each of these monthly press releases, the media would run frenzied stories about the pending announcement. The general tone of these stories indicated that each incremental hike in interest rates posed an increasing threat to our economic well-being. Following each Fed announcement of a rate increase, the stock market acted like a two-year-old throwing a fit…for about 20 minutes, and then quietly returned to a semi-comatose state.

The United States Federal Reserve System (that is, the Fed) was created in 1914 in response to several financial crises that occurred during the first decade of the 20th century. These crises were ultimately contained through the workings of the private banking sector. The thinking that led to the creation of the Fed was that the government, not private individuals, should be the caretaker of the financial system.

For the first four decades of its existence, the primary function of the Fed was to provide two things: currency to the banking system, and the infrastructure that returned checks to their bank of origin. In 1958, Congress passed legislation that dramatically increased both the power and the responsibilities of the Fed. This legislation charged the Federal Reserve System with maintaining stable prices and low unemployment. The problem is that these two objectives are close to mutually exclusive.

There are thousands of interest rates in our economy, so it is critical to understand which interest rate the Fed targets to attain its desired goal. The primary interest rate that the Fed can control is the discount rate. This is the rate at which the Federal Reserve System allows commercial banks to borrow from them. The Federal Reserve has no power to change other interest rates, such as interest rates on car loans, mortgages, or credit cards.

The conventional thinking behind the Fed’s actions is that encouraging higher interest rates will slow the overall level of borrowing in the economy. After all, who wants to borrow money at a high interest rate? This lower level of borrowing is supposed to slow the growth of the economy, bringing down the general level of price increases.

The U.S. bond market is an enormous body of financial assets worth almost $80 trillion. Every day, trillions of dollars are traded, as corporations, large banks, and the federal government conduct their normal business. A significant portion of these bonds are used to support the $15 trillion U.S. mortgage market. Another significant portion of this market is the treasury bonds that service our national debt.

Since the Fed started its interest rate campaign, the Fed funds rate has steadily risen. Interest rates have fluctuated and often move in a direction contrary to the Fed’s objective. The magnitude of these movements is also often in opposition to the Fed’s thinking. The rates on short maturities have

risen, while the rates on longer maturities have declined. This indicates that bond professionals think inflation will continue for the immediate future but will eventually fall back to normal levels. Rough translation: The Fed has some influence on interest rates but does not have the power to flip a switch that immediately changes the level of interest rates and thereby changes the level of inflation.

The 800-pound gorilla is the spending and taxing policies of Congress. The government’s response to the pandemic pumped trillions of borrowed dollars into the economy. This put spending power into the economy faster than companies could ramp up production. It also forced the service sector to hire at a time when workers were reluctant to venture out of their homes, pushing wages higher.

This year to date, the Fed’s program to bring the inflation rate back to the 2 percent range (down from its post-pandemic peak of 9.4 percent) has had some minor success. However, the economy continues to grow at a reasonable level despite the presence of historically high inflation rates. There are no definitive signs that inflation will return to its pre-pandemic levels anytime soon.

Despite the dire warnings from the mavens of Wall Street, their news media acolytes, and a few doomsayers in Washington, the economy and the stock market remain on a positive trajectory. There always are, and always will be, those who scream that the sky is falling. But in the words of the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, “Never bet against the American economy.”

Fabulous, Fantastic Ferns

A Jewel in the Shade

Ah, ferns. The non-flowering herbaceous plant that stole my heart so many years ago is still one of my favorites. There are approximately 10,500 known species of ferns, and there could be many more. Some groups of ferns have been poorly studied thus far, and new species are still being found in tropical areas that have not been widely explored.

Ferns themselves are ancient divisions of vascular plants that could be as old as 350 million years. This vascular plant possesses true roots, stems, and very complex leaves. It reproduces by creating spores. Interestingly enough, their type of life cycle (one that is dependent on spores for dispersal) preceded the seed-plant life cycle by a long time.

Most ferns can be found in warm, damp areas. As you might imagine, ferns are most abundant in a tropical climate. As latitudes increase and moisture decreases, they are considerably less profuse—you’d be hard pressed to find ferns in cold, dry places. In northern climes, you might find them in old fields or cleared forests, where there was once woody vegetation. You would find hardly any in an arctic region.

Just how much do ferns love tropical weather? Let’s put it in perspective this way: a small country such as Costa Rica may have more than 900 species of ferns…that is about twice

as many species as are found in all of North America north of Mexico. Diversity in ferns is most on display in tropical rainforests. Additionally, many species grow as epiphytes, which means they grow on the trunks and branches of trees.

What do ferns do for us? As a group of plants, ferns are not of any great economic value. Some species have been used as a minor food source and some for medicine in various parts of the world. Other species, however, are considered to be strongly carcinogenic, so it’s best not to sample any of them as food. According to scientists, a major value of ferns is in biological research because the plants have retained a primitive life cycle involving two separate growth phases. These plants are wholly different in many respects and have become model organisms for genetics teaching and research.

There are many reasons to try ferns in your gardens, from their wonderful diversity to the amazing gamut of sizes.

44 September 2023 The Green Thumb

(They can range from tiny little plants to huge tree ferns.) I have way more shade in my backyard than I would like. If your yard is shady like mine, it can be very challenging to maintain a good-looking lawn. You might want to consider replacing the most difficult areas of your yard with ferns. I have many ferns in the shady parts of my yard, but my personal favorite is the majestic ostrich fern.

That’s not to say that shade is all a fern needs to be happy. Ferns prefer moist soil and will thrive by a pond, stream, or soggy area in your yard. A word of caution when planting ferns: plant in loose, loamy soil that is quite rich in organic matter. Be sure to work some compost and peat moss into the soil before planting. We should note that there are a few ferns that can tolerate the sun, provided that the soil has plenty of moisture, but very few adapt to that sun exposure. Cinnamon ferns are good for relatively sunny locations.

The Christmas fern is native to the eastern United States and is popular in the southeast, since the foliage stays green throughout the winter. It is hardy in Zones 3–8 and can mature to one to two feet high. The aforementioned ostrich fern makes a big presence in a landscape and can often get to four to six feet tall. Obviously, they require plenty of room to spread out! They thrive in Zones 2–7.

The Leatherwood fern is native to the eastern United States and has a leathery texture. This variety needs to be grown in moist soil and requires protection from the sun and drying winds. It is a beautiful choice for a shady garden and is hardy in Zones 3–8. Another favorite is the Lady in Red fern. This fern was named because of its showy red stem color. The red color intensifies as the plants mature. They do not get very tall, so they make excellent ground cover and are great companions for other perennials that love the shade.

The best news of all? Once you’ve selected a type of fern that is hardy in your Zone and you’ve found the right spot for it in your yard, your plant will require very little maintenance.

Midwest Pain Clinics One-Stop Support for Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a prevalent and debilitating problem. According to the CDC, one in five adults experiences chronic pain, and it is the number-one cause of disabilities and disease burden around the world. Those of us who deal with chronic pain (or have a loved one who does) know that it is an enormous health concern and that treating and managing it is a massive priority. Finding the right healthcare professionals to help you is critical, and that’s where Midwest Pain Clinics can be the answer you need.

Midwest Pain Clinics offer cutting-edge treatments and pain management solutions that get to the heart of chronic pain. The main clinic is in Omaha, at 825 North 90th Street. They also have three satellite clinics: in Nebraska, it is in Bellevue; in Iowa, they’re in Missouri Valley and Red Oak. The group employs about 30 health-related staff.

Stephanie Simon is a nurse practitioner who has worked at the Omaha office since 2017. This Creighton University Nursing School graduate plays a critical role at the clinic. “As a nurse practitioner, I am assigned patients on a monthly basis, working with them on their pain management regimen,

monitoring and evaluating their conditions, scheduling procedures, and keeping up to date on medications and any needed follow-up,” she says. “I am in constant contact with these individuals.” This approach maintains patient safety while treating chronic pain.

Pain management can be a tough and complicated process. It often takes time and effort to identify and eliminate whatever is causing the discomfort. The patient remains in frustrating pain while the problem is being solved,

often shuffling from one practitioner to the next to find answers. “What is unique about Midwest Pain is that everything that you would need is on site, including our own ambulatory surgical center,” Stephanie says. “We deal with an issue from start to finish. We focus on interventional health and work as a team to treat our clients.”

The Midwest Pain Clinic website lists many of the pain conditions the group addresses, including back pain and lower back pain, cancer pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), compression fractures, diabetic neuropathy, fibromyalgia, headaches and migraines, joint pain, neck pain, shingles, sciatica, spinal stenosis, sports injuries, work injuries, car accidents, and more. Their goal is to get to the root cause of the problem and provide an individual treatment plan for every patient who walks in the door.

“We see about 1,000 patients at this location alone,” Stephanie reports. “We are centrally located, and with our large and qualified staff, we can usually get someone in quickly. We also can treat a variety of conditions at the same time through our nurse practitioner monitoring approach.”

Because every condition is unique, one-size-fits-all-treatment plans are not an option. Often, the diagnosis and management can take time. It requires patience and focus. Despite the challenges of pain management, Stephanie finds her work extremely satisfying. “I get to know my patients and become an extension of their life and family. I know their grandkids! I’m there to commiserate with them. Then, I get to see them pain-

free, with a better quality of life, and it is an amazing feeling.”

One patient who is grateful for Stephanie’s services is Amy of Omaha. “I have had more than 17 back surgeries. One of those procedures went wrong with another doctor. I was frustrated,” Amy recalls. “At Midwest Pain Clinics, they listened to my problems and helped me work through my issues, always explaining to me what they were doing, never talking down to me. I also reinjured my back after the last surgery, causing more complications. The Midwest physicians implanted a spinal cord simulator. That equipment has eliminated my back pain, and I am pain-free for the first time in my life.”

Amy also recommends Midwest Pain Clinics because of their nurse practitioner monitoring approach. “It is wonderful to have an advocate…someone you can talk with and get updates from,” Amy says. “Stephanie was assigned to my case. She is smart, she cares, and she listens and answers my questions. Her bedside manner is impeccable and her support immeasurable.”

During a time of great fear, Japanese Americans were discriminated against during World War II. However, not all states shared these feelings. In partnership with the Legacy of the Plains Museum in Gering, the Nebraska History Museum is pleased to present “Preserving a Legacy: Japanese in Nebraska” to expand on the story told by the traveling Smithsonian exhibition “Righting a Wrong.” The story of Japanese Americans in Nebraska is filled with hope and support in the state. Facing Conflict Don’t Brush it Under the Rug

“People will love you. People will hate you. And none of it will have anything to do with you.” —Abraham-Hicks

This is a hard one for me to practice and one that I strive to convince myself of every day. Let’s face it: When we have people in our lives who point their finger at us in judgment, it can be hard NOT to take it personally. Whether the attack or accusation comes from a stranger, a friend, or a family member, most of us go straight into defensive mode, putting up our “wall.”

“When one person makes an accusation, check to be sure he himself is not the guilty one. Sometimes it is those whose case is weak who make the most clamor.” —Piers Anthony

Every person we come into contact with comes from their own life experiences, challenges, failures, and successes. It’s important for all of us to remember that. When we get in their line of fire, though, it can still hurt. How should we respond?

Well “back in the day,” I would brush it under the rug and pretend that it never happened. After all, I didn’t want to stir the pot, make a scene, or cause any problems. I was the biggest people-pleaser on the planet. What was the problem with this approach? I buried an awful lot of hurt, which created the internal trauma that I am still working through today.

“Find a place inside where there’s joy, and the joy will burn out the pain.” —Joseph Campbell

“It’s not personal” and “it’s not about me” are some very liberating realizations that can help us all live more joyful lives. Understanding that we can’t change another person helps us come back to our own center and find a way to seek our own joy.

“Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are.” —Marianne Williamson

Now, can we influence others in our lives? Of course we can. We can speak our beliefs, share what we are feeling, and explain our side of an issue. We can listen to their side with an open mind and then take time to reflect. Sometimes, common ground can be found. Sometimes, it can’t be. But just like everyone else, we are responsible for our own feelings and choices.

Ignoring a conflict just to keep the peace is not healthy. Not speaking your mind about your feelings is not healthy. Realizing that we have to seek our own joy, and follow our own bliss, is all we can truly control. By doing that, we gain control over the only person we can control…ourselves!

Preparing for School…and Life Emphasize the Three C’s

Are your kids ready for school? When I was a kid, getting ready for school meant buying supplies: pencils, a box of crayons, and a Big Chief tablet. For my kids, a list of supplies for the following year was sent home on the last day of school: ballpoint pens (cartridge fountain pens were too messy), pencils, a pink eraser, wide-ruled three-hole notebook paper, and a Trapper Keeper. More recent lists for younger nephews and nieces include a box of tissues to share with the class as well as normal classroom supplies. Today’s kids need an assortment of electronics (laptops, iPads, and other gadgets) for doing schoolwork. Back-to-school shopping has changed a lot over the years!

If you’ve read this far, you’re probably thinking, “What is she talking about? The school year is off and running! We’re ready already!” It’s true that classroom supplies are already in use. There are, however, other ways to help our kids get ready for school…ways that grow stronger with use and can be encouraged any time. To succeed at the ABC’s and the Three R’s, kids need a strong grasp of what I call the Three C’s: Curiosity, Creativity, and Confidence.

I believe a sharpened sense of curiosity is necessary to foster and increase learning. You can use your curiosity no matter what other tools you have available! None of my college textbooks mentioned the establishment of black towns in the 1800s or that

Mexico may have been an ally of Germany in WWII or any word about the government-established Indian schools that have been recently in the news. If I hadn’t learned to be curious, I might have stopped there. Now, when my curiosity is aroused, I get on the computer to find “the rest of the story.”

Creativity also needs to be honed. It’s more than making things. It’s more than the arts. Creativity means developing a different way of looking at things, whether you’re making decisions or solving problems or tackling a writing assignment.

Every kid needs to build confidence! How else will they decide to try something new or dare to be different or overcome obstacles? It takes confidence and courage to take a chance and possibly fail...and we learn from failure.

Schools often provide opportunities for developing curiosity, creativity, and confidence, but we may also unintentionally set up obstacles. When we tell a kid they’re doing something “the wrong way,” we’re undermining both their confidence and their creativity. When kids ask a question, they should be encouraged to find the answer; when there’s a problem, they should be encouraged to find the solution.

What we do to encourage our kids to be curious, creative, and confident helps them not just in school but in life. Think about how your past shaped who you are today. That’s often a revelation.

A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers:

“I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit!

The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. Together with their outstanding customer service and sales results, advertising with Women’s Edition has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my business. Thank you, Women’s Edition!”

Latest in Electric Vehicles

The Future is Now!

Is the time right to buy an electric vehicle? As the lineup of electric vehicles continues to grow, there does not seem to be much doubt that the future of driving is electric. Many consumers are interested in lowering their carbon footprint and are ready to invest in electric vehicles. Fossil fuel independence is also appealing to many governments, which leads to things like tax credits for energy-efficient purchases. In addition, the technology and infrastructure have improved over the years. EVs have increased battery range now, and top safety records. Charging facilities are easier to find. What’s not to love?

A strike against the first EVs offered was that they had noticeably weak acceleration, which was not appreciated by most drivers. Now, electric motors produce their peak power the moment you step on the accelerator. Another change is that most EVs now have their battery packs mounted below the cabin. This means the vehicles have low centers of gravity, which is great for handling.

Though EVs are not the least expensive new vehicles on the market, many consumers are finding that an EV fits right into their budget. Automakers who are hoping to increase the popularity of EVs sometimes provide special deals for buying or leasing an EV. And let us not forget high gas prices…no worries with EVs. The Federal Electric Car Tax Credit program has been recently revamped, and it may save you money. (You can learn more on the Department of Energy’s website at afdc.energy.gov/laws/409.) Also, you may earn tax credits when you install a Level 2 electric vehicle charging station at your home, which is likely where you’ll do most of your charging.

Of course, sometimes you’ll need to charge up when you’re not parked in your own garage. Charging stations are available by the thousands all over the United States, and more are being installed all the time. Four types of public charging stations are widely available: Type 1 (slowest), Type 2 (not as slow), DCFC (fast charging), and the Tesla Supercharger stations (these are only for Teslas).

To find an EV charging station in the United States is surprisingly simple. Apps like PlugShare and ChargePoint let you find the nearest charger. Most automakers also have their own apps to let you know where you can charge. You can even Google “EV charging stations” now. For long-distance trips, you’ll want to look them up in advance.

The apps also tell how much it costs to charge. Public charging stations are sometimes free but are more often pay-as-you-go (like a gas pump) or prescription-based. These prices may be set by networks or property owners. Some

dealers may provide complimentary public charging at certain chargers at their dealership. Generally speaking, you can add 100 miles of range for less than five dollars. Just like filling up with gas, a car with a larger battery, like a GMC Hummer EV pickup, will cost more to charge up than a smaller vehicle.

Fully charging an EV can be done in as little as thirty minutes, or it could take as long as half a day. It depends on how big your battery is and the type of charger. How long an EV stays charged depends on its EPA-estimated range, how fast you drive, the outdoor temperature, and the age of the battery.

In general, EV car batteries last from 10 to 20 years, so you may never need to replace it. However, factors such as heat, cold, or swift charging times can negatively affect that amount of time and, possibly, reduce performance. The good news is that manufacturers have already included protective measures like thermal management systems.

The average EV can last around 200,000 miles, which is longer than the lifespan of the average gas car (around 150,000 miles). That said, it will likely cost more to insure an EV (or a hybrid) than a gas-powered car. The reasoning is that EVs have more complex equipment and it could cost more to replace.

The growing trend of electric vehicles is nothing short of amazing! Experts expect to see 14 million EVs sold by the end of 2023. Of course, putting electric cars in more driveways will require a huge number of new public and private charging stations. The federal government is taking the lead in building this infrastructure, and private companies are also expanding their charging networks. New technology allows homeowners to install chargers that don’t require an upgrade to their current electrical panel. In some cases, the manufacturer will do it for you—be sure to ask!

Dunning Acupuncture and Massage Bringing Eastern Medicine

to Omaha

Dunning Acupuncture and Massage has been in business for two decades, but the services the clinic offers have been around for millennia. Owner Joel Dunning specializes in traditional Chinese medicine, including acupuncture. He and his wife, Teresa, who is a licensed massage therapist, are committed to bringing the benefits of Eastern medicine to the Omaha community. Unlike Western medicine, which focuses on mitigating health issues after they appear, Eastern medicine focuses on balancing a person’s energy state.

How did this passion for Eastern medicine evolve? Joel earned his undergraduate degree in biology from St. John’s University in Minnesota. During that time, he studied abroad in China and developed a keen interest in an Eastern approach to health. “I felt the Eastern approach to health made more sense,” Joel says. “It believes we are born healthy in body and spirit and that when the energy goes out of sync, we need to focus it.”

Following his graduation, he went back to China to teach English to Chinese students. He decided he wanted to pursue acupuncture professionally. He spent two years in China and then he completed a four-year master’s degree in acupuncture at Yo San University in Los Angeles. Joe is nationally and state licensed in acupuncture and Chinese herbalism.

“The traditional Chinese approach to health and disease is to be in perfect harmony,” Joel explains. “Everything works together. If something is out of kilter, that is where you focus to eradicate the problem. We go to the source of the problem to fix it.”

According to Joel, the first challenge he faced in starting his practice was educating the public. Many people in the Omaha area were unaware of the benefits of Eastern medicine. He began to offer classes at massage schools, yoga classes, and other holistic endeavors…anywhere where he could get the word out. He was building relationships and connecting with holistic practitioners to start his business. In 2006, he and Teresa got married, and Teresa joined the practice.

The primary service at Dunning Acupuncture and Massage is acupuncture. There are 14 major energy channels, called meridians, coursing through the human body. A subtle energy called Chi circulates via the meridians to all parts of the body. Its balanced, unimpeded flow is critical to sound health. If there is any misdirection, blockage, or other derangement of the amount, flow, or balance of Chi, there is a resulting pain, dysfunction, or ill health.

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles at specific points on the body. With these needles, the acupuncturist stimulates certain points along the course of the meridians. Such stimulation helps restore the normal balance and flow

of Chi so organs and bodily systems can work together in harmony. This sets the stage for the body to repair itself and maintain its own health.

In addition to acupuncture and massage, the clinic offers herbal medicine and the therapeutic movements of Qigong and Eastern yoga. Qigong is a system of coordinated body-posture, movement, breathing, and meditation. It is used for the purposes of health, spirituality, and martial-arts training.

Joel’s biggest reward is helping people get in touch with their bodies and, ultimately, feel better. One of those people is Amy Schmidt, a grateful believer in Joel’s services. “I have been going to Joel for several years for pain and to balance out a thyroid issue,” Amy says. She used to take a medication to treat her thyroid, but she never felt balanced. “Between the acupuncture and herbs, I no longer take the thyroid medication. I am almost 60 and take no medications! I feel much better using this natural approach.”

John and Deb Ecklund have been coming to Joel for nearly 14 years and especially appreciate the patient-specific herbal formulas that he develops in his on-site herbal pharmacy. “Joel has helped me control and virtually eliminate my severe headaches, muscle inflammation, and sinus and allergy issues,” Deb shares. “He is an excellent herbalist and is able to mix the correct tea for what my current symptoms are. He has helped me detox when my allergies flare up. His immunity formula has kept us healthy through many cold and flu seasons.”

Joel’s commitment to educating the public on the many benefits of Eastern medicine has not changed in the past 20 years, but his approach has adjusted to meet the public’s needs. He is currently developing an online module to educate customers and expects it to launch in about six months.

Dunning Acupuncture and Massage is located at 1020 South 78th Street, in Omaha. To learn more about the services they offer, visit them online at pinpointmedicine.com. To make an appointment, please call 402-650-7715.

Klein Insurance Agency Navigating the Medicare Maze

We’ve all heard that Medicare can be confusing. As we age into retirement, many of us can speak to that from our own experience! Medicare coverage can be a maze of choices, and some of them are presented in what sounds like a foreign language. Whether you are just beginning your journey with Medicare or are knee deep in it, Jayne Klein and the team at Klein Senior Insurance can help you through it. Jayne, a former middle school teacher, established Klein Senior Insurance four years ago. She knows how important it is to learn about Medicare before you choose your plan.“I’m still teaching,”she says,“but now my students are adults!”

Jayne has been offering Medicare plans since 2014. She understands that available Medicare plans can be overwhelming to many people. She has built her business around the simple principle of treating her clients “like I would want my mom to be treated if she were Medicare shopping.” That means close listening, a clear explanation of choices, and finding the right fit for each of her client’s insurance needs.

Jayne is well versed in coverage gaps, confusing deductibles, lack of prescription benefits, and plans that promise but do not deliver. “We here at Klein Senior Insurance are walking the walk about the challenges of aging and navigating the insurance benefits offered to seniors,” she says. Once seniors hit 65, they are eligible for Medicare coverage, and they are suddenly

We continue to see consistent potential patients flow to our practice from our marketing in Women’s Edition.”

required to make choices about health insurance that they’ve never had to make before.

Medicare is a wondrous thing—insurance available for a reasonable cost at retirement age—but it is a language that is foreign to most people. Once you no longer rely on the group coverage offered by your employer, you are left to do your own research, and it’s easy to make mistakes without expert help. “Navigating the options available and the best plan for you can be overwhelming,” Jayne acknowledges. “That is where we step in.”

Jayne is an independent insurance advisor who specializes in Medicare insurance solutions. She works with dozens of insurance companies and can offer her clients a broad range of affordable and inclusive plans. She is knowledgeable, about benefits regarding value-priced prescriptions, veterans benefits, and other avenues of savings that some brokers are not aware of. When Jayne visits with prospective clients, she asks questions about health care and prescription needs. She will give you a quick primer on the health plans available to seniors, discuss the pros and cons of each one, and let you decide what supplemental coverage you might need. Seniors are most likely on fixed incomes, and that means they need to watch their costs in every part of life, including insurance.

Medicare Advantage Plans have improved in coverage in recent years and are popular with Jayne’s clients. Advantage Plans are offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide your Part A and Part B benefits. These plans are sometimes called Part C or MA Plans. You still have Medicare, but Advantage Plans may charge different outof-pocket costs and can have different rules for how you get

services. These rules can change each year. You usually get prescription drug coverage through the plan, or you can join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.

A Medicare supplement (Medigap) is also insurance sold by a private company and can help pay some of the healthcare costs that original Medicare does not cover, like copayments, coinsurance, or deductibles. A Medigap policy is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan—a Medigap policy only supplements your original Medicare benefits and does not cover other needs like long-term care, vision, dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or private duty nursing.

Clients at Klein Senior Insurance are happy to attest to Jayne’s thoroughness, thoughtfulness, and compassion. “Jayne helped us decide on coverages with her knowledgeable, courteous, and caring service,” says one satisfied client. “She is reliable and personable.” Another client reports that “Jayne saved me $65 a month on a medical supplement! If you are looking for health insurance, give her office a call.”

Jayne enjoys meeting with clients in her office located at 707 Iowa Avenue, in Dunlap, Iowa. She is also happy to travel to a client, meeting in their home or wherever the client prefers. Jayne is licensed throughout the Midwest, including Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Colorado, Texas, Missouri, and Kansas.

You don’t have to navigate the Medicare maze on your own! To set up a free consultation with Jayne, please call her cell (402-214-2312) or the office (712-216-7070). You can reach her by email at jayne@kleinseniorinsurance.com. To learn more about the services offered by Klein Senior Insurance, visit them online at kleinseniorinsurance.com.

Prostate Checkups

A Men’s Health Must

September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Let’s take a few minutes to review what the prostate gland is and what men can do to maintain their prostate health. Being in the know can mitigate some of the issues surrounding this reproductive gland.

About 268,490 cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in the United States in 2022. One in nine men will be diagnosed with this common and potentially devastating disease in their lifetime. The good news is that prostate cancer is a slow-growing and highly curable disease. Men older than 50 are at the highest risk, but screening, medications, and regular health checks can mitigate the effects of this disease. In fact, the fiveyear survival rate of prostate cancer is 98 percent, and multiple treatment options are available.

The prostate is a male reproductive gland about the size of a walnut. It is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Its purpose is to help protect sperm by making a fluid called the prostatic fluid. This fluid contains zinc, enzymes, and citric acid, which work in tandem to keep sperm alive and traveling smoothly.

Some prostate conditions cause no symptoms at all. Often, by the time symptoms are noticeable, the condition is severe. This is one of the reasons it is so important to be regularly tested for prostate cancer, especially if warning signs appear or family history indicates a prevalence of the disease.

There is no pain associated with a growing tumor in the prostate, though there are some warning signs of prostate cancer. Any of the following symptoms merits a visit to the doctor:

levels can be an indicator of prostate cancer and other prostate conditions.

If the doctor is concerned about prostate cancer, then patients may undergo a biopsy or ultrasound so the doctor can take a closer look at the prostate tissue. The tissue sample is acquired with a needle and is tested in a lab. During a prostate ultrasound, a wand is inserted into the rectum so that it can get a clear picture of the prostate. A biopsy and an ultrasound may be performed at the same appointment.

The different types of prostate cancer are defined by which type of cell the cancer started in. The most common type is adenocarcinoma of the prostate. Adenocarcinomas develop in the gland cells that line the prostate gland and the tubes of the prostate gland. Nearly everyone with prostate cancer has this type.

Regular checkups with your physician and being attuned to possible symptoms are the best action points for a healthy prostate.

• A need to urinate frequently, especially at night, sometimes urgently

• Difficulty starting or holding back urination

• Weak, dribbling, or interrupted flow of urine

• Painful or burning urination

• Difficulty having an erection

• Decrease in the amount of fluid ejaculated

• Painful ejaculation

• Blood in the urine or semen

• Pressure or pain in the rectum

• Pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, pelvis, or thighs

These symptoms don’t necessarily mean the diagnosis is cancer. They could be caused by other conditions, but they can be timely reminders to get a checkup.

The most common prostate exam is a rectal exam. This allows the doctor to check the size of the prostate and determine if there are any lumps, nodules, or bulges. A blood test can check prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. Elevated PSA

There are two sub types of adenocarcinomas of the prostate. Acinar adenocarcinoma of the prostate is the most common. It develops in the gland cells that line the prostate gland. Ductal adenocarcinoma starts in the cells that line the tubes (ducts) of the prostate gland. It tends to grow and spread more quickly than acinar adenocarcinoma.

Transitional cell carcinoma of the prostate starts in the cells that line the urethra (the tube that carries urine to the outside of the body). This type of cancer usually starts in the bladder and spreads to the prostate. Squamous cell carcinoma of the prostate develops from the flat cells that cover the prostate. Transitional and squamous cell carcinomas tend to grow and spread more quickly than adenocarcinoma of the prostate.

Cancer is also described by grade and stage. The abnormality under a microscope is called the grade. The size of the cancer and how far it has spread is the stage. These measures help determine treatment.

Regular checkups with your physician and being attuned to possible symptoms are the best action points for a healthy prostate. Men can survive without a prostate gland, but the prostate is necessary for reproduction. It also affects urinary and sexual health. Many cases of prostate cancer are successfully treated, but it can be a devastating disease if left unchecked. Make a reminder this month to support prostate health (for yourself or someone you love).

HVAC and Appliances

Fall Check-ups and Repairs

With summer coming to an end, it is a great time to get your home check-ups and repairs in order—specifically, your appliances and heating system. If you don’t have your fall appointments made yet, call your local repair business to get on their calendar!

Cold weather is on its way, and you don’t want to be stuck in a cold snap without a functioning furnace. In order to maintain optimal performance, experts recommend that you have your heating system serviced at least once per year. Annual system checks can reveal potential problems before they happen and ensure that your heating will continue to work when you need it most this winter. If that wasn’t enough of a reason to arrange an annual inspection, your furnace’s warranty may include a stipulation that you have it serviced every year.

Annual heating checks often include things like checking the ventilation and air intake grill for blockages or leaks; inspecting the blower’s access door and its seal; examining the heat exchange for any separation, cracks, or corrosion; lubricating moving parts; checking the burner and flame sensor; ensuring electrical connections are tight and checking wiring for corrosion or rust; checking the flue for obstructions; calibrating the thermostat; checking belts for cracks and wear; and testing all safety controls and startup cycle.

Your HVAC tech will also likely check on your air filter during the annual visit, but air filters need attention much more often than once a year. Depending on the type of filter you have, it will need to be replaced every 30 to 90 days. Fiberglass filters are cheaper to purchase but don’t last more than 30 days. Pleated air filters will cost you more up front but can last up to 90 days.

Your HVAC isn’t the only system you’ll want to make sure is in working order before the wintertime—your home is full of appliances that may be one repair away from perfect working order. It may be tempting to give in to consumerism and just buy a new one each time your refrigerator hiccups. Before you plan your trip to the store, consider the more eco-friendly option of appliance repair first!

The first thing to determine, of course, is whether the appliance in question is worth repairing. A good rule of thumb is that if the repair will cost less than half the cost of a replacement appliance, then it’s definitely worth repairing. Fortunately, the

most common appliance repairs cost just a few hundred dollars, well under the 50-percent guideline.

Another repair-versus-replace consideration is the age of the appliance. Most home appliances will also last anywhere from six to 15 years, with compactors, dishwashers, and microwaves on the short end and gas ranges and refrigerators on the long end. If a broken appliance is still near the beginning of its lifespan, spending the money to repair, rather than replace, is a smart bet. Unsurprisingly, then, appliances with longer lifespans are also the ones most likely to undergo repair. Freezers, ranges, cooktops, fridges, ovens, washing machines, and clothes dryers are the most commonly repaired appliances.

How do you find a good appliance repair person when you need one? As with any professional, you’ll want to make sure any repair person you hire is certified to do such work in your state and is up to date with any new tech and procedures. A good way to start building a list of pros to call is to ask your friends, family, and neighbors for recommendations. You can also look online for highly rated local professionals. If your appliance is still under warranty, find out in advance if the professional you want to hire will be able to accept payment through your appliance’s warranty provider.

Will home warranties pay for any of these repairs? You’ll want to check your warranty specifically to be sure, but most complete home warranties will cover the servicing, repair, or replacement of any large home appliances, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems not related to your home’s structure. Home warranties do not cover appliances already covered under a manufacturer’s warranty, however. It’s important for your pocketbook to check and double-check any warranties a broken or faulty appliance may be covered under before scheduling a repair.

Nobody wants to be caught with a broken oven or heating system in the middle of the winter holiday season. Why not be proactive this fall by checking your home warranty and scheduling any necessary appliance repairs and your yearly HVAC service?

Fireplaces

Ambience, Warmth, and Relaxation

Fall brings to mind vibrant colors, cooler weather, and everything pumpkin. As we spend more time indoors, we remember that there is nothing quite like sitting in front of a fireplace, whether you’re enjoying a warm beverage, reading a good book, or gathering with friends and family. The warmth and soft light of a fireplace promotes a cozy, relaxing atmosphere in any room. If you have considered installing or updating a fireplace, read on!

When selecting the style and color of a fireplace, consider timeless and appealing options. For a clean look, consider a white fireplace featuring a white mantel and a Carrara marble surround with white custom bookcases. For a more traditional look, try wooden built-in shelves with an integrated fireplace. Exposed brick can look traditional or modern, depending upon the materials used. Tile options abound, from subtle to bold patterns that create a statement piece. Stone is a popular option that looks great in any space. No matter your taste, there is a fireplace style to complement your décor.

Perhaps you already have a fireplace, but it has lost its appeal. If you would like to update your fireplace, there are several factors to consider. Materials, labor, necessary repairs, fireplace safety screen choice, fireplace insert, and paint will all impact the cost.

The fireplace surround provides a frame and is vital to the overall look and style. Materials like brick, cement, and stucco are budget-friendly options, while stone and metal are more expensive. The wide variety of wood and tile materials offers options for budgets ranging from modest to extravagant.

The mantel is an important design element at the top of the fireplace. Popular options include wood, marble, limestone, and refurbished antique mantels. The hearth (the floor inside the fireplace) is made of non-combustible materials like brick or stone. Less expensive options include tile, concrete, slate, and brick. Stone, granite, and marble are more costly.

Labor costs vary widely depending on the complexity of the project. Repairing minor cracks is common, but some projects may require repairing the hearth floor or drywall and paint repairs. Are you removing and replacing the fireplace or just refacing it?

A fireplace insert may be worth considering if you have a wood-burning fireplace and would like less maintenance, better heat retention, and more convenience. Popular fireplace insert options are gas and electric. Insert installation ranges from several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending upon the job’s complexity. Factors to think about include the layout of your home, the existing fireplace, and

the size and type of insert. Installing an insert requires hook-ups to vent pipes and gas or electrical supply. A gas or electric fireplace insert allows you to enjoy the warmth of a fire instantly with the flick of a switch.

If you would like a fireplace but do not have an exhaust vent, a ventless fireplace may be an option because it does not need a flue. These fireplaces may be built-in or freestanding, placed in any room of a home, and use natural gas or propane. It is important to note that ventless fireplaces do emit a small amount of fumes. Check if the model you are considering has a built-in carbon monoxide detector and oxygen detection sensor that monitors a room’s air quality.

Energy efficiency varies among different types of fireplaces. Electric fireplaces are the most energy-efficient, and gas fireplaces are cleaner and more energy-efficient than wood-burning. However, you can do things to increase the efficiency of a wood-burning fireplace, such as keeping the damper closed when not in use, installing tempered glass doors and a heat-air exchange system, and insulating the chimney.

To fully enjoy your fireplace safely, regular maintenance is essential. When using a wood-burning fireplace, ashes should be removed and disposed of when they have cooled after each use. A major cause of chimney fires is creosote buildup on the firebox walls and chimney lining. This buildup should be removed once a season (or more often, depending upon the buildup). Hiring a professional chimney sweep is the way to ensure that the job is done correctly. Gas fireplaces should be inspected once a year by a licensed gas provider to check connections and take care of any issues. Proper maintenance extends the life of a fireplace and provides a safe environment for maximum enjoyment.

In addition to providing ambience and warmth, fireplaces are places for friends and family to gather. When the weather is cold outside, enjoying a warm fire inside is a great way to unwind and relax the mind and body.

Give Yourself a Smile Just One Day!

Would you like to have a good day…today? Do you want to make a difference in your life…today? Do you want to feel better…today? It’s easy. Simply SMILE.

“Just for today, smile a little more.” —

Smiling is truly a universal language. It connects people from all cultures and civilizations. Think about that for a minute. When any of us is offered a genuine smile, we don’t just see it, we feel it. A smile lifts our spirits, whether it is coming from a loved one or a total stranger. The best strangers? Babies! They are so pure and spontaneous. You can tell immediately if you’ve connected with them!

“You know what the great thing about babies is? They are like little bundles of hope. Like the future in a basket.”

Now, as we are all aware, smiles can be genuine or fake. (I sometimes call it Facebook fake.) So many of us think we have mastered the fake “I’m fine” smile. Let’s face it—when someone is faking a smile, we know.

What do I do if I don’t feel like smiling? If I’m having a lousy day at home, or work, or life! Should I offer a fake smile?

“Smiling is free therapy.” —

The amazing thing about this free therapy is that it doesn’t take much to nudge yourself into actually feeling happier. Look in the mirror. Talk to yourself. Do something that makes you happy. Smile at yourself. Make goofy faces at yourself. Before you know it, you’ll find yourself wearing a genuine smile that you can take with you when you start your day.

Still not there? Play music that brings you joy. Can’t think of any? Go to Spotify and search for Happy Music. Try playing it before you even get out of bed.

I realize that many of us have so much on our to-do lists that this suggestion may almost sound ridiculous. But guess what? If you try this for one day—just one day—you will discover that your day is better. It is lighter, it is more connected.

“Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” — Mother Teresa

When we share love, it comes back to us. We find that our step is lighter, that we are kinder…and that means we will attract kinder, gentler people in our lives. It works! Give it a try and let me know how it goes for you. Just one day!

“Whoever is happy will make others happy too.” —Anne Frank
