FOUNDER’S WELCOME strongly women in this industry need to be heard, need to be given the platform to use their voice, need to connect with one another, and need to be provided the tools and encouragement to find their own success.

Happily, what started as a one-off event, evolved into the world’s leading membership organization dedicated to empowering and advancing women in the alcohol beverage industry, year-round.

T

oday marks a milestone in my journey that began 16 years ago, when my own personal glass had become disturbingly empty. After pouring everything I had into my career in the tech industry and working my way up to become the only female director in the company, I still never felt I could bring my full self to work. I never felt my voice was heard or my opinion valued. Ultimately, I became disenchanted and decided to leave the industry that I loved.

In 2003, I set on a journey, desperately trying to balance work and life, find my purpose, connect with others and conquer gender stereotypes. That is when I became aware of the hardworking, passionate and talented women behind some of the most iconic wine brands in the world. These women were making it happen, but their stories were not being told and they were not being recognized. I decided to write a book, Women of the Vine, Inside the World of Women that Make, Taste and Enjoy Wine. To me, these women were rock stars and I wanted the world to know it. It was my vision at the time, to have these women take center stage.

After writing the book and starting the first collaborative wine label with several top women winemakers, I learned how complicated and competitive the industry really is. After seven years of putting everything into the wine brand, I couldn’t sustain the business and had to admit defeat.

Because of YOU, our Corporate and Individual Members, we created a community to call our own!

Because of YOU, we are engaging leaders across all three-tiers in the conversation of gender equality, we are forming gender diverse teams that reflect our consumer base, we are starting initiatives to support the next generation of women leaders, we are educating the industry on unconscious biases at all levels and we are fostering a culture that mentors, sponsors and promotes the advancement of women.

I am proud to stand with you and for you, the alcohol beverage industry’s movers and shakers, emerging leaders, top executives, and pioneers. WOMEN OF THE VINE & SPIRITS

A

s a social entrepreneur, Deborah Brenner expounds beyond the entrepreneurial focus of growing a business and measures performance on the positive impact the business makes on society. She has manifested her vision with Women of the Vine & Spirits, and inspired people to support a movement in the alcohol beverage industry. She has presented a challenge that calls forth the best in people and brings them together around a shared sense of purpose, working with the power of intentionality and alignment with a higher purpose.

Deborah graduated from the University of Delaware with degrees in English and Journalism, and was soon hired by a television and film technology company that required international travel to countries for whom wine is a part of everyday life. After over 20 years in the male-dominated field of high-end technology and owning a marketing and public relations firm, Deborah discovered during a fortuitous trip to Napa and Sonoma that many women in the wine industry – like her own – were under recognized.

Compelled to tell their stories, she authored a bestselling collection of profiles on women in the wine industry, Women of the Vine: Inside the World of Women Who Make, Taste and Enjoy Wine, which Wine Spectator named a Critical Read of 2007.

Through the process of writing the book and championing its subjects, Deborah became inspired to enter the wine business herself, releasing wine from a first-of-its-kind collective of seven artisan women 10

winemakers from Napa, Sonoma and Paso Robles. For the following seven years, Deborah learned the business inside and out. Ultimately, however, all the money, blood, sweat and (a lot) of tears could not foster women in the wine industry the way she had hoped, which led her to shut down the Women of the Vine wine brand and return to the drawing board.

One year later, Deborah organized the Inaugural Women of the Vine & Spirits Global Symposium, held in March of 2015, which quickly sold out to 500 women from five countries. Due to the overwhelming response, Deborah and the Women of the Vine & Spirits Advisory Board went to work developing a consortium that supports professionals in the alcohol beverage industry yearround. Thus, emerged Women of the Vine & Spirits, a membership-based organization, anchored by the annual Global Symposium, whose mission is to empower and equip women worldwide to advance their careers in the alcohol beverage industry, fostering gender diversity and talent development across the industry at large.

Deborah belongs to the Culinary Institute of America’s Society of Fellows and has received a Rising Star Award from Women for WineSense (2008), a New York Small Business Administration Women in Business Champion Of The Year (2009), a New York City National Association of Women Business Owners Signature Award (2010), the Lillian Vernon Award for Outstanding Community Service by the Women’s Enterprise Development Center (2011), a NY Women in Communications Rising Star Award (2013), the Rockland Business Women’s Network Woman of the Year Award (2014), American Cancer Society Dr. Louis Berger Award (2017), Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Award Person of the Year Nominee (2017), Las Vegas Inc. “Woman to Watch” (2018), and Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Award “Social Visionary of the Year” Recipient (2018).

Women in the Workplace 2018 is the largest comprehensive study of the state of women in corporate America. Since 2015, LeanIn.Org and McKinsey & Company have published this report annually to give companies and employees the information they need to advance women and improve gender diversity within their organizations.

Additionally, the study found a positive correlation between gender diversity on executive teams and two key measures of financial performance: operating margin and longer-term value creation, as measured using an economic-profit margin. This is likely why measuring diversity is now becoming a key financial metric that investors and analysts assess when making investment decisions.

Ana Ines Mendy is a Partner in McKinsey & Company’s Southern California office. Ana’s work focuses on diversity and inclusion, change management, and crisis response across industries and geographies. She has served clients on diversity efforts in a variety of contexts from pre- and post-merger integrations, existential crises, and more broadly, in company-wide transformations that set a new standard for an industry. Ana also leads McKinsey’s West Coast LGBT network (GLAM), pursuing her passion for diversity and inclusion within McKinsey.

Prior to joining McKinsey, Ana worked for the Burmese Lawyers’ Council in the Thai-Burma border, helping to raise awareness amongst Burmese refugees in Thailand of their legal rights. Ana holds an MBA with high distinction (Baker Scholar) from the Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Arts in History, summa cum laude, from Harvard University.

Kevin Dolan is a Senior Partner in McKinsey & Company’s Chicago office and a leader in McKinsey’s Transformation Practice. Peggy became the world’s first female Master Bourbon Taster in the industry and can trace her lineage back to some of the great bourbon making families in Kentucky.

In 2011, she created the Bourbon Women Association, the first female consumer group in the industry to celebrate and support Kentucky’s signature product with a platform for women. She also was one of the originators for the conception and strategic development of the iconic Kentucky Bourbon Trail, which has become a global sensation for the spirits industry. Because of her accomplishments, she was given the prestigious “Networking Award” by the Kentucky Distiller’s Association in 2016 for making a difference in the industry for women.

Her executive leadership skills also immersed her talent in designing women’s research and strategy studies for corporations, and she has spoken to countless professional organizations on women’s issues in the workplace and strategizing careers. She has set an inspiring new standard by which corporations can attract and retain female executives.

Barbara Marti started her career at Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits 27 years ago as an Administrative Assistant and quickly worked her way into a variety of positions. Her experience as an Analyst on the Information Technology team provided a springboard into her next role on the Data Warehouse team. After five years in technical training, Barbara joined a newly

created Supply Chain Management division where she started out in Supplier Relationship Management and Warehouse Operations and eventually oversaw the first re-distribution center in our industry, the Southern Supply Center. Barbara is now a respected leader on the Commercial Transformation Team where she is developing business process improvements and leading organizational changes to improve operational efficiencies.

Nova Cadamatre was the first female winemaker in the US to achieve the title of Master of Wine and one of only a few American winemakers to do so. Currently she is the Senior Director of Winemaking in Napa for Constellation Brands based at the iconic Robert Mondavi Winery. In 2014, Nova was named to Wine Enthusiast’s Top 40 under 40 list and has numerous 90 scoring wines to her credit. As one of the first graduates of Cornell’s Viticulture and Enology program in 2006, Nova relocated to California to assume a number of winemaking roles with many iconic wineries including Beringer, Chateau St. Jean, Chateau Souverain, and at Robert Mondavi Winery.

Sharon O’Hara is a Human Resources professional at BevMo! who partners with executives and field leaders to develop teams in effective sales management and leadership advancement. Sharon was the first regional wine buyer for Cost Plus World Market, where she opened wine markets in Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Idaho and Colorado. She leveraged her extensive wine experience and transitioned into store operations where she impacted sales through product knowledge, process and development for field teams. Sharon held district and regional field positions within the BevMo! organization, prior to moving into Human Resources where she utilizes her industry and product knowledge along with her team development skills for greater impact on the entire organization.

Sarah has dedicated much of her time to championing Constellation’s diversity and inclusion efforts including the launch of the Women’s Leadership Development Program, expansion of the Women’s Leadership Network, and introduction of Unconscious Bias and Creating Inclusive Culture Programs, to name just a few.

Prior to joining Constellation Brands, Sarah served as a Principal Consultant with Linkage, Inc. where she created customized solutions by collaborating with multiple 44

stakeholders on large scale projects to ensure that her clients ultimately achieve their strategic objectives. Sarah effectively blends facilitation, team development, and executive coaching to create engagements that have impact and get results.

Sarah also has experience as an executive coach and consultant, serving a variety of clients in the healthcare and emergency medical fields. Her experience as a firefighter and paramedic taught her first-hand about the power of effective leadership and high-performing teams—and shaped her passion for leadership development and management. She has worked extensively in a variety of industries including healthcare, energy, technology and finance.

Taylor Amerman has been with Brown-Forman since 2013 and leads Brown-Forman’s alcohol responsibility efforts to create a responsible drinking culture.

This includes evidence-based strategies to prevent drunk driving, prevent underage access and consumption, support addiction recovery, support bystander intervention, make moderation aspirational, and respect the choice not to drink.

Taylor holds a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of Kentucky and a Master of Science degree in corporate social responsibility from 46

the University of Nottingham in England. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Volunteers of America Mid-States and the Louisville Metro Parks Advisory Commission. She was named one of Louisville’s 40 Under 40 in 2017 and the 2016 Outstanding Young Professional of the Year through the Young Professionals Association of Louisville. She also carried the Olympic Torch in the 2012 London Olympics!

She has also led the SPIRIT Employee Resource Group that strives to create a culture where employees and guests feel welcome, regardless of their choice whether or not to drink.

Rachael recently retired after 31 years at Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, the fourth largest premium wine company. She joined Ste. Michelle as a State Manager and was promoted to Northwest Region Vice President.

In 2013, Rachael spearheaded and founded the Women of Wine Leadership program. Among her many contributions to the organization, Rachael also played an important role in the pilot of the mentoring program. She continues in an active role as the first Alumnus Advisory Board member.

In her new endeavor, she will continue to mentor and coach women in the wine business, focusing on the business side of the industry as well as consulting wine companies to build leadership programs for women.

Carol Kelley is the Southern California Manager for the On-Premise Customer team at Beam Suntory, the world’s third largest premium spirits companyowned by Suntory Holdings Limited. Together with her team of eight, she builds business with consumers, bartenders and industry experts, employing sales analytics and marketing program development to help on-premise accounts achieve unprecedented levels of success. Carol joined beverage alcohol sales in 2005 and, prior to Beam Suntory, she was District Manager at Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits in the Chain Division supporting National Accounts.
