editor's note Wow here we are again, no sooner than the last issue was rushed out the door am I sitting down again writing my introduction to our final issue for 2021.

I don't know about you, but I for one are excited for Christmas Season. In New Zealand, we have been in lockdown since August (and I mean full on lockdown).

Not only is this hard as an adult, but I feel for my kids as well, doing homeschooling and being away from their friends.

Whenever I feel a bit overwhelmed or feel a negative thought making its way into my conscious, I stop, take a deep breath and just say "this too shall pass". This has been my coping secret weapon during this horrible lockdown.

The silver lining - Christmas! Man, do I live Christmas, not only for the fabulous summer nights with my family, or drinks with friends but a time for reflection, a reflection on what a crazy year we had and a reflection on an incredible year ahead.

So if you find yourself that 2021 has not been your year for whatever reason, take a moment, take a deep breath and remember this too shall pass and great things are ahead of you.

Anaida Deti BEATING THE ODDS WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I was born in Albania, a very small country in Europe. I immigrated to Italy in 1997, as in Albania there was a civil war at the time. I was only 16 years old at the time and my parents were very scared that something bad would happen so they decided that it would be better for us to move there. The journey was not easy, I was working and going to school at the same time.

After finishing high school, I decided to go to dental school. It was my dream since I was a little girl to be a dentist. Dentistry was something that had always fascinated me. This does not mean that I wasn’t terrified to go to the dentist! Sure, I was, but I also found it very interesting. I used to say that when I become a dentist, I will help all the people who are scared like me, to look forward to their dental appointments. Now I see kids looking forward to their dental appointments, and adults as well.

In 2002, I met my husband and we decided to immigrate to Canada. It was only two young people with big dreams and not much else. We had very little information, but when you are young you don’t think too much. When we came to Canada, things were not as easy as we thought.

I didn’t speak English and my school meant nothing here, so I had to start everything from scratch. It was quite difficult to say the least, but I was very determined to do something with my life and this was my chance. A lot of people did not take me seriously and that made me work harder and prove to myself and everyone around me that I can do it. After many years of school and getting my license, I founded DentalX in 2013. Initially, DentalX started with only me, booking appointments in my car and seeing patients in the late afternoons or Sundays after I worked all day for other dental offices. Then, my next three offices I shared with other dental professionals until I was able to open my own office in 2016. The day that I signed the lease, I felt sick to my stomach and the only thing I could think of was how was I going to be able to pay the rent. But I can say that I was able to pay the rent and some more.

The beginning was very hard to say the least, but now I have an award-winning dental clinic in Toronto and I am in the process of opening my second location.

HOW DO YOU DIFFERENTIATE YOURSELF FROM YOUR COMPETITORS, WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE? DentalX is a very unique option for the public. It’s slightly different from a traditional dental office because we focus more on the preventative side of dentistry. We also offer longer dental appointments that include more extensive oral hygiene instructions that incorporate a lot of visuals.

The office also looks different, it feels like you’re in a spa rather than a dental office. We offer many different relaxing techniques for the patients making the dental appointment more comfortable and less intimidating. We specialize in seeing nervous patients that do not like going to the dentist. Our warm environment and approach makes them more comfortable.

My patients and my staff believed in my vision and saw something in us that other dental offices did not have, which is a good relationship between myself and them. My passion for the dental field and my commitment to taking care of patients was conveyed in the best way possible, and this made them believe in us.

HOW HAS THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IMPACT YOU AND WHAT ACTIONS DID YOU TAKE TO PIVOT?

Covid-19 has impacted every single business, including ours, even though we are considered essential.

We have made quite a few changes in the office to meet the COVID requirements, but some patients are still scared to come in, especially older patients.

Also, a lot of patients are having financial hardship and they cannot afford to come in unless it’s a dental emergency.

A lot of patients have lost their jobs, along with their dental insurance.

We have seen many more emergencies this last year, due to increased stress. The most common dental emergency we have seen is teeth grinding, which is directly related to stress.

Routine check ups and dental cleanings have been postponed by many patients.

This will increase the dental emergencies in the near future, which will ultimately end up being expensive, time consuming and more painful.

IF YOU COULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN, WHAT WILL YOU CHANGE AND WHY?

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF? I have always loved the idea of creating beautiful hair, but I didn’t know that it could be a career option until I was around the age of 10. I had never stepped foot inside a hair salon until at least that age. I know it sounds strange, but I had only ever had my haircut at home by a family member with kitchen scissors.

Yes, I can hear the gasps of horror from every reader at this very moment. But once I stepped into a salon for the first time, it was better than the most imaginable candy store that any child with a sweet tooth could dream of. It was from then on, that I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist. There would never be a plan b “just in case I failed.” Failure wasn’t an option for me.

Fast forward many years later and I became licensed. I noticed around year 7 of being licensed, I began settling into dangerous territory. I was getting comfortable and becoming comfortable marks the beginning of the death of your career. I am not a New Year's resolution type of person, but I decided to begin taking as many continuing education classes as possible each year. I knew that with each class I took I would be motivated to stay relevant in the beauty industry.

As much as I loved taking classes I began to want to share my knowledge with other stylists. And from there my dream of being an educator began. I worked extremely hard to specialize in my craft and I have been blessed to work for some amazing companies. I am now a master cosmetologist within my state, an artistic educator for Joico, a styling educator for Olivia Garden, on the education team for Beauty Launchpad Magazine and I am a guest writer for multiple beauty publications across the
