ART EXCELLENCE AND SCHOLARSHIP at Woldingham

ART EXCELLENCE AND SCHOLARSHIP Woldingham’s outstanding facilities for art and textiles provide the ideal space for creativity, skills and inspiration to develop. Taught by teachers who are practising artists in their own right, Woldingham students produce excellent work in a range of media including drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, ceramics, installations, mixed media and photography. Studio facilities include: • Dark room • Ceramics studio with kiln • Textiles studio • Screen printing facilities.

• Sublimation printer • Heat press area • Dedicated studio spaces for Sixth Form

The art studios are open after school and at weekends for art scholars.

ART SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME Each art scholar is assigned a member of the Art Department to support, encourage and inspire. Throughout the year, the department runs workshops for art scholars with visiting artists and our artist in residence. Recent workshops include sessions in heat press, body casting, monoprinting and portraiture. Older art scholars are invited to life drawing sessions. We have an Art Ribbon (prefect), a Sixth Former, who is the senior student for art and textiles who plays an important role with our younger artists and as an ambassador for art across the school.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Woldingham has an artist in residence who, as well as creating her own artwork at school, runs workshops for scholars and other students and provides individual support and inspiration.

UNIVERSITY AND FOUNDATION YEAR SUPPORT Every year Woldingham students accept places at leading institutions around the world including New York’s Parsons School of Design, USA, Camberwell and Central Saint Martins. Popular degree courses include fine art, architecture, fashion, illustration and visual media. The department encourages students keen to take a Foundation year before starting a university degree and supports them in producing portfolios as part of their applications.

ANNUAL SHOW AND EXHIBITIONS AT SCHOOL A highlight of the year is our Summer Exhibition, which parents are invited to attend, featuring the work of our GCSE and A Level art and textiles students, as well as outstanding work from other scholars and student artists. A gallery of student work is displayed around the school, as well as in the art studios.

ART AT GCSE AND A LEVEL Art scholars are expected to take fine art at GCSE and most scholars study either art or textiles at A Level.

TRIPS AND VISITS Our students are encouraged to attend galleries and exhibitions outside of school and teachers suggest which places to visit, taking advantage of the school’s proximity to London. The department also organises trips and visits. In the last year this included an art and textiles trip to Paris.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES In addition to offering scholarships in art at 11+, Woldingham also awards art scholarships at 13+ and 16+. Through the nurture and support students receive in the Art Department, some girls’ creative talent and excellence becomes more evident while they are at school so we invite them to join some elements of the scholarship programme and encourage them to apply for a scholarship at 13+ and 16+.
