OOSTERSCHELDE SAILING MONUMENT The ‘Oosterschelde’ is the only remaining representative of an extensive fleet of threemasters that sailed under Dutch flag at the beginning of the twentieth century. This vessel, with her size, elegant appearance, excellent sailing characteristics and her perfect restoration, commands respect. Restored to her former glory the ‘Oosterschelde’ plies the world seas. The ship is employed for: • day and evening trips for a maximum of 120 passengers • longer excursions for a maximum of 24 passengers • social functions and events • seminars and conferences • exciting voyages and sailing expeditions

Renamed ‘Fuglen II’. 1943 The vessel runs into a mine and narrowly escapes destruction. 1954 Sold to Captain S. Petterson, Sweden. Renamed ‘Sylvan’. 1970 Very thorough conversion to modern motor coaster. 1988 Bought by Captain D. van Andel, renamed ‘Oosterschelde’. 1990 Start restoration. 1992 Put into commission by HRH Princess Margriet. 1996 Voyage round the world. 1999 Tour of the Americas. 2003 Expedition to Antarctica.

Even retired seamen voice their admiration for this former freight schooner. After her launch in 1918 the vessel plied for many years the Mediterranean Sea and the African coastal waters. From 1990 to 1992 the ship was restored. Since then the ‘Oosterschelde’ carries passengers worldwide.

HISTORY

In 1917 the ‘Oosterschelde’ was placed on the stocks in Zwartsluis for a firm of Rotterdam ship owners. As freighter the vessel had a capacity of 400 metric ton. She was used mainly to ship loose cargoes such as clay, stones, potatoes, bananas and timber. In 1921 the ‘Oosterschelde’ became the property of the Groningen sea captain Kramer. He travelled the European coasts and was a regular visitor to Africa and the Mediterranean Sea. Over the years he modernized the ship. A diesel engine was installed, the rigging was reduced and the mizzen-mast was replaced by a wheelhouse. In 1939 the ‘Oosterschelde’ was sold to a Danish firm of ship owners. In the 1960s the vessel, now in Swedish hands and renamed ‘Sylvan’, underwent a drastic conversion to modern motor coaster. The ‘Sylvan’ continued in service as freighter until being brought back to the Netherlands in 1988 where an extensive restoration project was initiated. Supervised by three maritime museums and with the support of the Municipality of Rotterdam, the Rotterdam business community and hundreds of shareholders and contributors, the vessel was restored to her original condition. On the 21st of August 1992 Princess Margriet put the restored ‘Oosterschelde’ back into commission.
