Looking to gain career skills by pursuing your passion in an academic internship over the summer?
Need money to conduct research over the summer?
Want to complete an Honors project to enhance career opportunities and graduate school applications?
300+ undergraduate researchers each year collaborate with W&M faculty who are leaders in their fields. Mentorship is woven into the fabric of every Charles Center program.
The nation is our classroom. Whether through internships, study away, conference travel, or field work, students take their research on the road to apply classroom skills to understanding and devising solutions to real-world problems.
Nearly 1,000 W&M students annually benefit from Charles Center mentoring and programming as Monroe Scholars, WMSURE Scholars, 1693 Scholars, Sharpe Scholars, or Honors students.
Whether it's through a summer research grant, Honors thesis, journalism seminar, summer academic internship, or one of our scholars programs (WMSURE, Monroe, 1693, or Sharpe), the Charles Center is here to support you!
Check out our research, internship, and applied learning opportunities!
At the Writing Resources Center, we help you strengthen your writing and communication skills by providing resources, workshops, and one-on-one support for all kinds of assignments and projects that require writing: academic essays, presentations, storyboards, personal statements, creative writing, applications, and more.
Writers from all disciplines and levels are welcome!
Our trained peer consultants come from a variety of disciplines and can help you at any stage of the process – from idea, to draft, to revision
You’ll begin by identifying goals for the session Then you and the consultant will work together to explore possibilities At no time does the consultant take over authorship. Many writers come in early in the process to discuss their ideas with an attentive, sympathetic audience.
You may want to focus on:
– Developing a thesis
– Clarifying ideas
– Structuring an argument
Strengthening paragraphs or sentences
– Designing and delivering a presentation

Community Councils are established at the start of the academic year in every hall. Anyone living in that area can be a member of Community Council! Councils meet weekly and act as a governing board for that area to create connections and provide opportunities for the student voice.

Most residences are equipped with coin operated and/or ID card access washers and dryers. Machines can be operated via W&M Express from your ID card or coins Cost is $ 2 00 per wash or dry cycle Problems with machine malfunction can be reported by phone (1-800-927-9274), email service@caldwellandgregory.com or on the web
Resident Assistants (RA) facilitate development of community by creating opportunities for residents to interact; conduct hall meetings; educate residents about self-determination; oversee development of Community Agreement; and initiate discussions between roommates through use of the Shared Living Expectations document.
Provides residents sharing a room the opportunity to examine each other’s personal living style and preferences. This agreement will also help to ensure that the rights of each individual resident are respected Learning to accept each other’s differences without infringing upon one another is an important skill to learn and makes residence hall living easier
Back in 1972, W&M instated the then- ground-breaking policy of SelfDetermination, providing students living in the residence halls agency in determining guest visitation and their own personal "freedom of movement" in and out of the hall Since then, the policy has evolved to meet the needs of our current generation of students Students engage with learning strategies such as community agreements, shared living expectations conversations, and community council engagement to exercise self-governance and develop a self-determined sense of self within the context of community

At William & Mary, we believe that student leadership development is a cornerstone in supporting students to become engaged citizens. Leaders use their skills to create change, craft solutions, and seize opportunities. Leadership is not about position or title. All students have the capacity to effect positive change Leadership can be learned and developed through campus involvement and practice. With involvement, the opportunities are limitless and we're here to support students as they explore their options.
Our office seeks to encourage and support involvement and leadership across campus. We work to assist students in their efforts to create positive change in the world. We infuse leadership development opportunities through involvement in Recognized Student Organizations in order to develop bold, authentic, and confident leaders on campus Specific areas of support and oversight include:
Student Organization Recognition, Resources, and Services
TribeLink
Leadership Development Initiatives & Programs
Student Assembly
Fraternity and Sorority Life Organization Budget Allocation Process
Media Council and Publications
Campus Alcohol Policy Event and Program Support
Depth Over Breadth
It is the depth of involvement over the breadth of involvement that fosters lasting leadership development. Choose significant involvement in a FEW things rather than spreading yourself too thin
Anyone can contribute to positive change, with or without a formal title or positional role within an organization.
Pursue Perspective
Students who seek a better understanding of others' world views, perspectives, and lived experiences are more successful and impactful leaders.
Finding the organizations and involvements that are right for you can be exciting and overwhelming. You should focus on opportunities that bring out your energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity. Here are a few questions to consider as you begin.
What are you curious about? (People, places, causes, events, trends, cultures, etc.)
What skills, knowledge, or insights do you want to explore and develop?
What energizes you or restores your well-being?
NEED MORE HELP?
Considering involvement through these categories can help you refine your choices Identify one organization or involvement area in each of these categories:
Something you care about and want to continue at W&M
Something you are interested in but have never tried
Something that advances your academic or professional interests
Think "Depth Over Breadth " Try to narrow down the long list of possibilities to just a few organizations/involvements that align with your goals, interests, and hobbies If you need help finding organizations, search the directory in TribeLink!
READY TO GET INVOLVED?
Explore TribeLink to learn more about ways to get involved through Organizations and Events.

William & Mary is the birthplace of the American college fraternity. The first Greek-letter society, Phi Beta Kappa, was founded at W&M on December 5, 1776 Its earliest members established core values of scholarship, service, leadership, and community Today the fraternity/ sorority community is comprised of over 1600 students, 30+ chapters, and 3 governing councils
Our three governing councils the Panhellenic Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and the Interfraternity Council (IFC) all have different joining processes The first step in both Panhellenic and IFC recruitment involves registering for recruitment Registration links can be found on the FSL website or council social media pages The first step for NPHC and our multicultural organization membership intake varies according to the particular fraternity or sorority, but general information can be found here.
Information about recruitment, our member chapters, and the broader FSL Community can be found using the links below
