TODAY'S GAME

Today we take on Oddies FC, a team who currently play in the 2nd Division of the Sunderland Sunday League. They will offer us a stern test against an experienced outfit which will be a good platform for us to build on in our first official competitive game as a club.

The fixture comes after we come out of the 2021 Lockdown and we are back after a Month's training. The fixture is being held on our home pitch, Boldon School's fields. It is going to be a good game for us to sink our teeth into as we look to get off to a winning start. Thank you to David Branton for giving us the chance to play against his team. We wish them good luck in the remainder of their season as well, they are currently finishing their season in the 2nd Division.

2021 Away Kit Unveiled In February, we revealed our new away shirt which was produced by Nike and Direct Soccer. The maroon shirt has proved popular with the players and will be what we wear today in our debut fixture as a club.

FA Affiliation Complete Last month also saw the club complete the FA's affiliation process which now enables us to start signing our players up via the Whole Game System. It is also helping us secure our place in the South Shields league for the next season which will be confirmed by the end of May hopefully. Exciting times are coming for the club as we finally become a real team.

WORDS FROM THE GAFFER

The first thing I would like to say is a massive thank you to everyone who has helped this project become real and achievable throughout the last year. It has shown me just how great the Sunday League Community can be and it has really made this process a lot easier.

The plans to make a football club had been in the pipeline for a while now, I would say at least a year if not longer. I've always wanted to do something like this, the problem was having the right people around you to make those plans a reality. People think running a football team is easy, when you want to do it right like we do...it certainly isn't easy.

Now that those plans are in place, I am excited to see how far we can go as a club. People limit themselves to simple things like, lets just get promoted. I want us to become a popular sunday league club, not just a team of individuals. We can be popular across social media, across South Tyneside and potentially become a club which gets people more invested in Sunday League football in the North East.

There have been a number of tough decisions to make over the last year, including which league we would be going into, our home pitch and which players we would be looking to sign on. Luckily we haven't been short of options in each of those departments and I now feel that the club is in a perfect place to begin their history.

As for our first opponents today, it is the experienced team Oddies FC who are facing off against us today. Rambo and I go back a while, having met when I was at Witherwack FC and he was guiding Oddies to a Cup and League double in the 3rd Division back in 2017/18.

Having spent last season split between two clubs, Witherwack and Washington North End, I have seen two different approaches to running a football club, and I want to go with the one I feel will give us the best chance at doing well and enjoying our football.

I would like to thank Washington North End, their players and most of all gaffers Jaymie and Danny for my time there.

Having impressed during training, Josh Wong chose to make his comeback to football from injury with us here at Boldon. He is a brilliant footballer with amazing technical ability and a solid footballing brain on him.

Since signing for us, Josh has had a handful of sessions where he showcased his ability and if he keeps himself fit, he will be a vital player for us this season. Josh can operate out wide or through the middle and will add pace and trickery to the side.

Josh is also very familiar with all the lads having went through school with most of them.

PREVIOUS GAME

As we headed out for a spontaneous training session in the middle of December, we came across a mix of Wear United and Jolly Raiders lads who were also looking for a team to play against. The fixture was a 9 a side game which we hadn't planned at all and it was one held without a referee at Downhill Hub We got off to a terrific start, bagging early goals through Jolas Sutherland and Yegor Rumble who had a terrific game up top. Jordan Brindle was providing the assists whilst Kai Scott marshalled the back line with Liam Banks and Anth Lydon supporting him. Niall controlled the midfield alongside Brindle in the early stages and we had a real foothold.

The goalscoring continued with Yegor firing a rocket in from far out and Jordan adding a goal as well. Binky poked home a tap in from close range and made it comfortable for us.

Gregg added a goal as well. We were heading for a solid victory at this point but fitness began to show as we started to dwindle a little bit in periods of the game.

They came back into it, Lewi T not being able to stop their onslaught of shots at goal but still producing some very good saves. They krept back into it and it was up to us to prevent a comeback. However, in the end we kept up the pace from the start and managed to seal the win with more goals coming from Yegor and Jolas. The win was sealed.

ONE BIG COMMUNITY

Without all of the club's family and friends we would not have been able to get to the point we are at now. We are all suffering through the pain of Covid-19 still and we appreciate everything that you have all done to help us, whether it be sharing a post on Facebook to raise our profile...or donating money to a football card. It has all been noticed by us and we appreciate every single part of it.

I knew from the start of this project that it would take help from people to get it started as I simply didn't have the resources to just go and make the club from the ground up with unlimited money and so forth. Special notices have to go to Heather Brown for her role in all of this. Heather enabled us to raise a lot of money through very kind donations for us to raffle away.

It's not just about the people who have donated to or shared our page, it is also about the people who have helped us out along the way whether that be through advice or through coming to training and helping out when we needed numbers. The advice and experience I have gained from other managers and secretaries has been huge, no more so than witnessing how Jaymie Adams runs Washington North End. Then there is the Players and the lads who are working tirelessly behind the scenes to get us kickstarted. Kai Scott, Jordan Brindle, Gregg Lydon, Joe Holman and Yegor Rumble have all helped get us off the ground and get us going whether it be through recruiting players or just through offering help when it was needed.

Thank you to everyone who has helped us out, we hopefully will do the business on the pitch from now,.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS

In this week's throwback to previous Sunday League players, we have Dave Brown.

Previously a defender at some fantastic teams in Sunderland, Dave has experienced a lot at Sunday League level before and is going to share his experience and see how it compares to the modern day clubs.

Having amassed just under 700 appearances, scoring 67 goals aswell as captaining teams for around 400 of those games, Dave spent his 15 years in Sunday League football at 5 teams including Bristol Street Motors, William's Brothers, Fulwell Mill, Central Laundry and Sweet Chariot Disco.

He's had some stories to tell from his years in the game, including about the time he scored from inside his own half with a header. It was a fixture against Seaham Harbour in 1994, the header was a clearance which took one bounce and went in past the keeper.

Watching on as a baby was a young David who is now our gaffer.

"There were 8 divisions in Sunderland when I was playing and the pitches were mostly the same. King Georges and Hylton Road were still the main ones but another pitch was Tunstall Hill which had a slope so bad you could barely see the other goal at times."

Discussing the teams in the leagues, Dave mentions how the same names featured including Redhouse, Southwick, Hylton Castle, Pennywell Comrades, Oddies and Thorney Close.

An interesting fact is that Dave played alongside current referee Benji, he was a left back in one of Dave's teams back in the day. Dave was only sent off once, that was by ref Georgie Drenhan who was still refeering last time I checked. "Benji was a good little left back.

Georgie used to turn up on his bike to games, was the only ref to ever send me off."

Subs back then were only £1 a game for Dave, and he spoke about how players very rarely jumped from team to team as much as they do nowadays. "For 15 years I played for 5 teams but each team was mostly the same group of lads.".

THOSE WERE THE DAYS

Amongst those team mates were some others including CB partner Tutsy who was one of Dave's favourite team mates he played alongisde. "Then there was Tommy Mack, he always came off a moody pitch looking spotless." Dave reminisced about how funny it could be in the changing rooms. "Andy Cotton once walked in with a pair of his lasses knickers on in the changing rooms."

One of the games Dave played in was stopped for a long period at Half Time when Colin brought pizzas in from his shop. The referee agreed to stop it if he got a slice of pizza himself! You would think the Central Laundry had clean strips. Wrong! "We had the dirtiest strips in the league at times and they used to be soaking wet all the time," "There was a game against The Dolphin which we were winning 5-0 and one of their players on the other team drove a car on the pjtch to try and get it abandoned. It was probably because Tommy Chip was winding them up before the game though." He even mentioned the time they played the Salvation Army, if any of their players swore the manager used to bring them off the pitch.

His best season in football came when he scored 16 goals from Centre Half. He also scored 2 hat-tricks from the back in games as well. One came at Ryhope Rec for the Laundry versus Silksworth Dynamos and the other was against Thornley Officials for the Bristol Street Motors.

Football sounded like a lot more simple thing back in those days, you turned up and played then went out on the drink after and there was no arguments or fighting like there is today sometimes. One story Dave always fondly remembers is the time he played against The Stables for Fulwell Mill and marked the former Sunderland legend Gary Bennett in a game. "I remember having him in my pocket during that game as well!"

Rivalries back then were something that stayed on the pitch, probably helped by the lack of social media back then. For example his sides used to always have rivalries with Sid Lay's Redhouse side's, Sid being the father of Liam Lay who is currently running Redhouse in Sunderland now. But the rivalries were always just competitive, nothing bad. It goes to show just how much football has changed since those days!

WORDS FROM THE GAFFER

Firstly I would like to say how excited I am to eventually get started. Its been a long time coming and we've had to be patient, I'm sure I speak for everyone in grassroots football that it will be great when that first whistle blows and we can get back playing again. For us as a club its been stop start in terms of how we've been able to prepare for our first season together. We have a commited, young and hungry squad and everyone has played their part in trying to get our club up and running and ready for next season to begin.

I was approached by my brother to come on board as a part of the coaching team when it was decided that he wanted to form the club, and with the help of several others they have done a great job putting in all the groundwork into getting us as ready as we can be off the pitch. I jumped at the chance to be involved and hope to bring some experience and be able to help guide this talented youthful squad that has been put together. I've played in the shields league before although only for a short 2 season stay and have a number of seasons in the Sunderland league behind me aswell. I'll be looking to draw on my experiences from those seasons as I move onto the sideline.

I'LL BE LOOKING TO DRAW ON MY EXPERIENCES FROM THOSE SEASON AS I MOVE ONTO THE SIDELINE

Unfortunately due to a recurring injury that requires surgery I've had to halt my playing days for now and I would have loved playing in this team we have at Boldon Colliery FC, you never know I may have to lace the boots up now and then. I've been impressed with the talent and potential we have acquired in the squad and the recruitment a lot of lads have done.

We have a good mix of players including some great lads that have played to a high level on Saturdays and Sundays, these lads will be massive for us as we will need that experience and knowhow. We also have younger lads who are making the first steps into men's Sunday football.

These lads have shown they have the ability to play well and I have no doubt they will adapt and be strong enough to cope with the physicality they'll come up against next season. I could pick out players that have impressed but I think that would be unfair as we have a lot of strength in depth in certain areas of the pitch. And we will be needing everyone when the season begins.

WE HAVE A LOT OF STRENGTH IN DEPTH IN CERTAIN AREAS OF THE PITCH

These friendly games we have lined up between now and August will be a great chance for the lads to get a feel for football again, also a chance to give us some selection headaches by the time that first league game comes around. The commitment of the lads has really impressed me already and before the latest lockdown put a stop to football, we had to take a step back ourselves as the lads were willing to train twice a week during the winter. This was causing a number of the lads to get knocks, but just goes to show how hungry and determined these lads are to give this a really good go and I think we are all excited now we can put our efforts into 11 a side games.

This game will be a great one for the lads coming up against an oddies side that not only has an experienced core to it but has some very good players. Although they've fallen on harder times of late with a lot of players moving on and a whole new squad having to be put together, this is a club that has won promotions and won trophies under the management of David Branton and will be a great test for our boys.

These last few seasons I've came up against some brilliant young teams that have came Into men's football especially in the Sunderland league. Teams like The Avenue, Stella United, Washington North End and Redhouse. These clubs are the type of blueprint we could really do with following and I see similarities to what we have here. Not only do these teams like ourselves, have talented players. The core of these teams are made of lads that socialise together, went to school together and even played in youth football together and that is the same for a lot of our lads. I think that has paid off for the clubs I've mentioned and been a big help in how they've grown and been able to work so well on the pitch.

I CANT WAIT TO GET STARTED ON THAT SUNDAY AND SEE EVERYTHING THAT HAS BEEN WORKED SO HARD FOR

I'm sure that it will be a massive benefit for us as we move forward and try to be a successful side. It'll not be easy but I'm convinced we have the right tools available and the personnel to really be a competitive side in what will be be a tough league next year.

I can't wait to get started on Sunday and see everything that has been worked so hard for over this last 7 months or so when Boldon Colliery FC take to the pitch in a game for the first time.

INTRODUCING THE OPPOSITION

Currently being managed and ran by the experienced David Branton, Oddies FC reside in the 2nd Division of the Sunderland Sunday League. 'Rambo' is someone who knows his stuff when it comes to running a footy team.

Originally being in the 4th Division and finishing 4th in 2015/16, Oddies were moving onto bigger and better things. Branton is widely known across the Sunderland Sunday League community and he is a popular manager.

Oddies FC won a Cup and League double in the 3rd Division and 3rd Division Cup back in 2018/19 which was a very good achievement as they rebuilt their club with the likes of Stephen Lax and then Paul Webster.

Being promoted to the 2nd Division, Oddies went on to reach the Billy Pemberton Semi NAME ODDIES FC Finals after beating Witherwack FC on penalties in the Quarters.

VENUE KING GEORGES FOUNDED 2015 Adding Lewis Ross, Stevie Allen and more to BASED IN SUNDERLAND the side in that season, Branton had transformed the side and Oddies FC was SECRETARY DAVID BRANTON beginning to look even more formidable.

However, a change of fortunes after lockdown meant a few lads would end up leaving.

FACTS

With the loss of Allen, Lax and then more important faces including Scott Seldon, David Brown and more...Oddies began another transition period in which they are now looking strong once again. Everyone wants to see Oddies do well so we can't wait to see what the future holds for Rambo's side.

THE FIFA SQUAD

KITS REDESIGNED

1) Stella United (Sunderland 3rd Division) First up in our new segment for having their home kit re-designed is Stella United, from the 3rd Division in Sunderland. They traditionally wear Yellow and Black so we kept that original colour design.

This time we went for a Puma shirt with predominantly yellow, a subtle striping pattern and then proceeded to give them yellow socks and black shorts. This fits in perfectly with the club's new badge they had done a while

KITS REDESIGNED

This next kit is an away shirt we think would best suit Stella United. With a navy and yellow colour scheme for their badge we thought it would be good to put that into an away kit.

The shirt also has a light grey and snow white graphical feature on it to add an extra aspect to the design. The shirt is also another puma effort and it compliments their home shirt well.

Shorts and socks are blue and yellow to break up the kit nicely.

DREAM 5 A SIDE TEAM

GK) David De Gea In goal, I opted for David De Gea of Manchester United and Spain. I still think De Gea is one of the best keepers in the world and he makes some mint reaction saves so he would be perfect for 5-a Side.

DF) Virgil Van Dijk At the heart of the team I am putting Van Dijk from Liverpool and Holland. VVD is easily one of the best defenders in the world and I think his presence in the team would be enough to get my 5 a side team through the game.

MF) Kevin De Bruyne My main star of the team is arguably the best player in the world at the moment, Kevin De Bruyne of Man City and Belgium. Super Kev is a wizard when it comes to passing and shooting. He is gifted enough to be in my team.

MF) Lionel Messi Joining KDB in the midfield is Argentine superstar Lionel Messi.

He is the obvious choice for anyone in their ideal 5 a side team. Messi is a handful in any form of football and his dribbling in tight spaces is the obvious main point.

FW) Robert Lewandowski Up front I am going for the greatest striker in the world at this point in time, Lewandowski of Bayern Munich. Lewan is a talented finisher and he would be the obvious choice to bag us the goals in the 5-a side team.

Favourite Season in Sunday League I haven't completed a full season at one team yet and I haven't enjoyed football as much as I should have. Hopefully it will be the upcoming as they are all good lads and want to do well.

Funniest Team Mate Liam Banks is the funniest. There's stuff he comes out with at random moments.

Smartest Team Mate I don't know because smartness can be judged differently.

All Time Best Team Mate Probably my Uncle Graeme.

Favourite Sunday League Goal My cousin Jamie scored a belter from long range that he showed me once. That's probably rhe best. Or any goal that costs Witherwack a game.

What is your best attribute?

Probably my long range shooting and finishing.

Least favourite opponent to face At South Shields we always used to get run ragged by Whiteleas in games.

I have chosen a slightly different best eleven of people I have been in a club with or played against. In goal is

Troy Baker from both Witherwack FC and Washington North End. Troy is a

unit when it comes to commanding his area and his distribution is second to none in Sunderland Sunday League.

As part of a back 3 I have opted for

Kyle Hourigan who will be captaining this side. He is a

beast of a defender and is very good on the ball, always a key player for any of his teams.

Then comes the rolls royce of defenders,

Mackie Whitfield and Andy Smith, both currently

at Witherwack FC. Both are very good on the ball, solid in the air and very good defenders.

In the middle of the park I have gone for

David Vincent who is arguably one of the best

players in Sunday League. Talented on the ball, quick and agile, David could walk into any team. Partnering him is WNE's

Matty Harris who is another exceptional talent. Top drawer on

the ball, Matty can run for days as well which gives him an extra edge over most players. You won't find a nicer lad either.

On the wings I have opted for two rapid wide men.

Jack Curry is an obvious choice as he can

do both the defensive and the attacking roles, he is also the fastest player I have seen. At Witherwack, he added goals to his game which made him even better.

Lewis Barton is on the

right flank. He's another lightning quick player who also provides goals for WNE. Lewis is a talented young player.

Up front was a tough one and likes of Jake McDermott, Robbie Yoxall and Callum Francis just

Liam Middlemas is the first striker, a very good player who grafts non stop and has a lot of quality on the ball. He can play anywhere. Ben Cains, a lad from Stella United, goes miss out.

on the left hand side. He is a very good forward player and is always a danger to defenders.

Finihsing the strikers up is

Dazzy Green, when he is on his game, Daz is one of the best. He is

unstoppable at times.

On the bench I have opted for Sean Simpson as my backup GK. Skinner is a very good young keeper, I think he will only get better.

Micky Coates is one of the two the defensive option for the bench, providing a bit of bite in the team. Nathan Kelly is the other option, a good and solid defender who is good on the ball. Then there is Kie Mitchell and Rhys Jukes, both very unlucky to miss out on this team.

Connor Scott and Jack Croucher are the back up forwards on the team, both very quick and also very good finishers. Craig Gordon rounds off the bench, another who when on his game is very good.
