THE AMAZING CIVIL RIGHTS TRIP

This year during spring break 32 students and 8 chaperones traveled together into the Southern part of the United States to learn about the Civil Rights Movement and its history. Mr. Whiteside said the "trip started in 2014. The purpose of the trip is to look at American and Black history in the civil rights era, gain perspective from different backgrounds, and equip students to be the light and reflect Christ first in our school and also in their communities " An even number of males and females with different backgrounds are selected each year

They packed a lot of fun and learning into just 6 days. Some of the sites they visited were Dr. King's birth house, the Edmund Pettus Bridge,

the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and the National Civil Rights Museum

Ana Sofija Veljkovic ('24), said that her experience on this Civil Rights trip was “informative, life-changing, fun, enjoyable, and amazing." Veljkovic said that she formed new relationships with others on the trip. She said, "my favorite part of the trip were the discussions that we had every night after visiting various historical sites. I enjoyed them the most because I was able to express my opinion about the topics and issues in our society that we talked about, and I also got to hear others' perspectives and learn something new every day." These discussions were very enjoyable and informative

CAN STUDENTS SAVE LOCAL NEWSPAPERS?

The internet keeps growing, and people are going online more frequently to do day-to-day activities and obtain the resources they want Due to this fact, there are fewer newspapers than before as more newspaper companies are being forced to shut down. The newspaper business is facing a very serious problem: How can they preserve the newspaper industry despite the popularity of the internet?

According to the New York Times Upfront, since 2005, 2500 local newspapers in America, have closed down. Moreover, America is set to lose one-third of its newspapers by 2025, meaning that newspapers will die out at the rate of two per week Unfortunately, the surviving local newspapers are often cutting down the number of staff and reducing the amount of newspapers printed

Furthermore, the Brookings Institution stated that there are 65 million Americans who live in counties with only one local paper or none at all. But is this a problem? If people can view the news on social media, are local newspapers even important to their community?

There are people who think the answer is yes. Although one can view countless sources of information on various platforms of social media, local events are not always there And it is important to know about local things as they can have a large impact on one's

life. One should know about decisions that the local government makes, ranging from school policies to construction of new traffic routes. Obtaining news from a local paper is very important and necessary.

Since numerous local newspapers are struggling with the possibility of foreclosure, local newsrooms have found a potential solution: college journalism students. In 2019, a partnership was created between a reporting class at Endicott College in Massachusetts and Gannett, the largest newspaper serving north of Boston That year, Gannett bought 21 publications in the North Shore region of Massachusetts with 32 editorial employees serving 22 communities The students of the journalism class received classroom instruction on finding and pitching stories, interviewing other citizens, and simplifying complex stories

In many ways, their classroom runs like a newsroom; students work with an editor and experience the progression of producing a newspaper In addition to this reporting class, the journalism students at the University of Georgia are also taking over a local weekly newspaper called The Oglethorpe Echo In the final analysis, there are an increasing amount of opportunities developing for college students (or even high school students) to be part of a local newspaper, training themselves in the many skills needed to create a newspaper

“I thought it was going to be the most stressful, worst class of my entire life”, said by one of the students who took the class last year. “And, it’s actually my favorite. I’ve loved every second of it.”

While trying to run a newspaper is not that simple, with more and more students taking charge, they will be able to make good memories and pursue beneficial experiences. Beyond this, as students take the reins of the newspaper, the field of information in their communities will be sustained.

According to The New York Times, right before the start of the pandemic, 360 newspapers closed.

Provided by Pew Research Center, while the amount of physical newspapers have been rapidly declining, digital new sites have seen an increase in web traffic Despite the promising increase in visitation, these news sites are experiencing shorter and shorter visit durations, a trend likely to continue in the future.

The amount of advertising revenue gained from the newspaper industry has dropped significantly In 2000, the advertising revenue of USA newspapers was about $48,670,000,000. Conversely, in 2020, the estimated amount of advertising revenue was only $9,601,389,155. Although newspapers are disappearing around the country, the industry has experienced an increase in revenue in regards to circulation.

Kon Knueppel ('24) also went on the trip and said, "I learned a lot It was good to hear the opinions of others and their experiences Listening was a big skill that I practiced, so I could learn more and more about the racial tensions of America " Knueppel especially enjoyed the Abraham Lincoln museum in Springfield Ariyana Bell said, "my favorite part was going to the Atlanta History center because it was interactive, and there were so many sites to see."

Veljkovic said she learned many new things. One example is the gaps in education between different races and how efforts were made to combat them. She said, "I learned more about the brutal history of African Americans, and it made me think more deeply about everything they went through I saw what real life was for African Americans in a time where they were not accepted " Ariyana Bell ('24) said, "One of the sites really hit me; it was the Peace and Justice Memorial site because there we saw so many graves for those lynched in America and it was honestly so sad "

Veljkovic summed up the impact of the trip when she said "I met some wonderful friends on the trip, and it was one of the best times I've had since I came to America. I strongly recommend everyone to apply for this trip and go because it will change your life for the better. I learned many new things and understood the history of African Americans much better than I did from school, I got to see various significant historical sites and travel across the southern part of America "

STREAMING SERVICES: THE RISE OF PLUSES

Today, it feels like every channel has a streaming service, doesn’t it? Some examples might include ESPN+, Disney+, or Discovery+; even Apple has its own streaming service! The culmination of dozens of services makes one look back to the simpler times when the trinity of Netflix, Hulu, and ESPN for sports were the main competitors So, how did the all-out streaming war start, and which are here to stay for good or die out quickly?

Let’s go back to 2018 Netflix, ESPN, and Hulu had established themselves as the clear giants of the streaming world. Then, in the beginning of April, ESPN revealed a surprise, which many thought to be an April Fools prank; this surprise was their very own streaming service. ESPN+ was quickly released, furthermore cementing its dominance in the online streaming world As a result, the floodgates opened, and the rush for every channel to create a streaming service ensued Next, Disney+ and Apple TV+ were released in 2019, with two more, Peacock and HBO Max, releasing in 2020 Finally, in 2021, Discovery+ and Paramount+ seemed to wrap up the boom of streaming services, alongside a few minor ones as well

Although there are almost too many services to count, which ones are going to be around 10 years from now? A plausible belief is that they

could all coexist in a very competitive market. For example, if someone is primarily looking to stream sports, they should get ESPN+ Moreover, if another person wants to stream children’s movies, it is possible that they will subscribe to Disney+ Therefore, different interests require different services Furthermore, things that will be great about this extra competition are the benefits consumers will experience If many streaming services want to obtain the most users, they will have to fight to see who can give the lowest price while offering the best content.

Finally, in 10 years, streaming services will almost eliminate cable usage entirely. Recently, streaming services have overtaken cable usage; this margin is certainly expected to grow. Besides this, streaming services are significantly cheaper than live cable

Streaming services are here to stay for the foreseeable future The competition that has been introduced in the past few years is set to leave users with choices to pick which one fits their needs and budgets The benefits of streaming could lead to the elimination of cable for good Although it feels like every company has their streaming services these days, they will most likely rise to compete with previous streaming giants, Netflix and Hulu, for big gains in users and profits.

Arguably, one of the most iconic and loved dystopian series is The Hunger Games Recently, a prequel to the series called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was released as a book, and the movie is set to come out in the middle of November this year. Starring Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird and Tom Blyth as President Coriolanus Snow, this movie is a must-see.

If you know anything about the original series, you know that President Coriolanus Snow is the main antagonist of the original series This movie, however, makes President Snow the protagonist and shows the backstory of how he became so evil Set during the tenth Hunger Games, the book will explore Coriolanus’s feelings about the Hunger Games as well as his growing relationship with Lucy Gray Baird Lucy was selected to be the tribute for the tenth Hunger Games from District 12 Since the Games had not been going on for very long, there was not a victor from every District. In turn, the Capital had its biggest and brightest students at the Academy serve as mentors for the tributes. Although he was selected, everything was not going well for

being sent to District 12 as a Peacekeeper. While serving as a Peacekeeper, Coriolanus discovers a rebellious plot that ultimately ends in disaster.

Coriolanus and his cousin, Tigris They had fallen on hard times and were willing to do anything to survive with no one realizing the extent of their poverty While Coriolanus may have disapproved of the games, he did not have any choice but to accept this offer

When the tributes arrive, Coriolanus wants to greet his tribute, Lucy Grey Baird, on the train. However, he ends up in the same car as the tributes who contemplate but ultimately decide not to kill him. Coriolanus is not above cheating, so he sneaks food to Lucy in effort that she would not go into the arena malnourished. Other mentors follow suit, not wanting to lose the opportunity of mentoring a victor, but others decide to taunt and mock their tributes In fact, this leads to the death of one of the mentors, with another one falling due to a venomous snake bite As a matter of fact, the lead-up to games was quite disastrous resulting in the deaths of several tributes before they even made it into the arena Nevertheless, the Capital continued with their games until only one tribute remained However, there appeared to be some foul play involved, resulting in Coriolanus

Finally, the reviews for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes have been relatively positive with The Guardian saying: "Collins's themes of friendship, betrayal, authority and oppression, as well as the extra layers of lore about mockingjays and Capitol's history, will please and thrill " Likewise, Time magazine wrote: [Suzanne Collins] shined most as she weaves in tantalizing details that lend depth to the gruesome world she created in the original series." Clearly, even if you were not the biggest fan of the original series, the upcoming movie The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes promises an exciting adventure for any film-lover.

RETIRING TEACHERS

This year a few of Wisco’s most respected teachers and mentors are retiring Despite the fact that they are physically leaving our school, they will never leave the Wisco family Many of them have been teaching for a very long time Even though they will be missed, Wisco’s retiring teachers deserve some time to themselves after giving so much of themselves for their students. They are part of the reason why Wisco is what it is today!

Pilot interviewed Wisco’s retiring teachers and asked them questions concerning their experiences at WLHS, and asked for their advice. Their (paraphrased) responses are very intriguing:

What are some of your favorite memories of your time at WLHS?

Mr. Plamann- “I have many memories of students progressing and achieving their goals using God’s talent and gifts given to them ”

Mr. Ricke- “Meeting the many students at Wisco, teaching and interacting with them ”

Mr. Leverence- His favorite memory at WLHS was when he was in high school at WLHS. He met his [then future] wife, Beth, in English hall near room 104 during his senior year.

Obviously, these retiring teachers love their students and cherish their time with them The students that were in their lives were some of their favorite memories

How would you describe your experience at Wisco?

Mr. Plamann- “My experience has been a blessing!”

Mr. Robinson- Full of God fearing people, and I am very grateful.”

What advice do you have for your students?

Mr. Plamann, a retiring teacher of 34 years, says, "make the most out of the opportunities at Wisco because you’re preparing and investing for the future High school flies by, so make a difference in this world while serving the Lord "

Mr. Ricke, a retiring teacher of 25 years, says "that the days seem long, but the years are short It’s going to be behind you or in front of you, so enjoy the experience before it’s gone "

Mr. Leverence- a retiring teacher of 29 years, says, "For secular advice, put the worst first." For the most important advice, "put God first."

"In practice, make your bed as soon as you get up in the morning, but before you get up ask God to guide you through your day."

Mr. Robinson- Mr. Robinson, a retiring mentor of 6 years, strives to leave his students with the best guidance. "Learn to behave, to get along with peers, and to control anger and other strong emotions."

What is your favorite Bible Verse?

Mr. Plamann- John 3:16

Mr. Ricke- Hebrews 12:2

Mr. Leverence- Jeremiah 29:11 (especially comforting for the senior class as they are leaving WLHS to go on different paths )

Mr. Robinson-John 3:16

What advice do you have for new teachers?

Mr. Plamann- His advice to new teachers is very inclusive and wise. He says to "love, enjoy, and minister to ALL the students as much as you can!"

RETIRING TEACHERS

Mr. Ricke- He wants to tell the new teachers to have patience with students, and have empathy Additionally, he says that he didn’t always have patience, and didn’t consider what lives the students may have at home. The best advice he says he can give is "to understand the students more, or at least try to."

Mr. Leverence- As for the teachers he says, “We have the wonderful opportunity and obligation to use the gospel to motivate our students The inclination to use worldly ways to care for our students in place of the gospel is a challenge With prayer God will help us use His love as the number one ingredient in our interaction with students "

Mr. Robinson's advice to new teachers is along the same lines He says to "listen to your students, and make sure to teach them about the Lord. If a student doesn’t control his/her anger or have good self control at times, learn to understand why."

These teachers had an immense impact on their students. Wisco will surely miss these fun, hilarious, and animated teachers! As Matthew 25:23 states, “Well done, good and faithful servant "

ALLOWANCE POLL

Many teens today are looking for ways to earn money In order to discover more about the common ways that the student body makes their money, Pilot asked the students of WLHS questions about allowances and jobs outside of school.

The first questions in the survey were about allowances. Seeing as 86.3% percent of the students who answered the form said they don’t get an allowance, weekly allowances appear to be only given to a few Moreover, for the 13 7% who said they did get an allowance, most indicated that they receive no more than ten dollars a week for doing chores The data shows that most students complete chores without an allowance The top chores that are done by the students include cleaning their room (89 7%), washing the dishes (78 1%), and

How much is your weekly allowance?

doing laundry (73 4%) Although over a quarter of students stated that they did not enjoy their chores, the majority of people (63 5%) say that depending on the chore they are doing, they can enjoy the task

Second, students were also asked about jobs they have outside of the household Taking a closer look, 60 5% of the students who responded said they have a job in order to earn money Students often answered that they got about seven to fourteen dollars an hour for their work. Only 5.2% of students polled earn $21 or more per hour. Most students said that their job is enjoyable depending on the load of the day.

It seems like most students in high school earn money through an outside job rather than through an allowance Thank you to the 233 students who filled out the poll!

As for second place, 9.6% chose the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have been in the World Series 3 times since 2017, less than the Astros

In first place, with 30 4% of the votes, WLHS selected Milwaukee's very own, the Brewers In the past few years, the Brewers have been to the postseason several times and are currently leading the NL Central Despite the fact that the Brewers have not been to the World Series since 1982 It remains every fan’s hope and dream that the Brewers finally win

SENIOR POLL

Senior year is full of mysteries for underclassmen. Are you curious about how senior year is going to be? Pilot sent out a poll and collected data regarding seniors and their time at WLHS.

What was your most difficult class? 1.

According to the chart, surprisingly, more people believe that required classes bring more challenges In chart 2, the others section included English, Geography, Biology, Introduction to College Writing, Accounting, Fashion Techniques, Western Literature 1800-Present, AP art, AP economics, Money Matters and gym A large portion of people claim math to be their hardest subject

3. What is your favorite club while at WLHS? Why? There a wide variety of responses here--sport teams, musical groups, Kindness Club and WWW, Art Club, Critical Thinkers, VCLA, Chess Club, and more!

One student said "My favorite club was probably Hope Squad and all of the opportunities to volunteer I love helping people out in any way possible "

4 Do you think AP classes are important?

Most students thought these were a good idea, but also warned against overloading yourself One student said their experience was "I took 4 AP classes in my time at Wisco, and each one I loved in different ways Not all of them will be part of my final major (probably), but they helped me look good for college admissions. And, I also received college credit from the AP exams."

2 What class did you enjoy the most?

According to the data, people prefer classes that are related to art, music and hands-on techniques In comparison to core classes, fine arts classes and electives are much more popular and enjoyable

5. What is the most difficult/challenging thing about taking AP classes? Please explain why. Students mentioned the fast pace of the material that needs to be learned, as well as preparing to take the actual AP test.

6 What year do you think is the most difficult?

62% of those who answered this question said that junior year was the most challenging

7 As a senior, what advice would you give to juniors?

"Challenge yourself, but also make time to enjoy your last year of high school "

"Do your best, work hard, but enjoy all the fun events in high school too

Another senior added "Keep going; it’s hard, but God is always by your side ready to pick you up when you go down "

A good summary and advice from one senior . . .

"Focus and get to work. Junior year is about building a work ethic and grades, so, when you hit senior year and start looking for colleges, you'll have the skills to figure out what you want (somewhat) Take hard classes senior year to look good on college applications Senior year the classes are hard, but shock of work you felt during your junior year (if you're taking higher level classes) will have prepared you A lot of the stress in senior year comes OUTSIDE of the classroom But, don't give in to the senior slide Do your work Turn in your assignments Crush every single test Don't get UAs Finally, do every single school event, every dance, everything Join NHS and volunteer too Cherish your teachers and your classmates; get to know them before you go You'll realize everyone has something to bring to life, even the ones you thought were/are annoying, and the activities you thought were uncool or boring, were actually really interesting and beneficial all along And people will change too- that will surprise you, for better, or for worse "
