He became athletic director in 1985 and for nearly 40 years has worked tirelessly to expand and improve the school’s athletic offerings, its training, practice and competition facilities, and its athletic prowess and stature.

In His Own Words
“I have spent nearly every meaningful year of my life anchored in some way to Wisconsin Lutheran High
School. I was the son of a faculty member, a student, coach, teacher, parent, and athletic director. Although I was born in 1956, I feel like I have been here since my dad, Carleton, was called to Lutheran High School in 1949.
I cannot begin to put words together that adequately express my gratitude to our Almighty God for the privilege of growing, learning, and then serving in these halls. Names, faces, and events flood back as I think about this blessing. I am the person
I am today so heavily shaped and influenced by the
teachers, faculty, and staff that I experienced as a student and then later those I have been honored to serve with as a member of the faculty. I have such great respect for those who have served on the coaching staff at Wisco. There are hundreds
of people who have supported the education-based
mission of our school’s athletic program. They have been the ones in the trenches working with our students and developing relationships with them. We have the great distinction that our coaches have an eternal win in mind for our students, which far exceeds any earthly scoreboard. WLHS has truly been blessed with outstanding servant leaders on our coaching staff.
I am forever indebted to my wife and our children for their sacrifices along the way and I thank them for their love and understanding all these years.
I will continue to pray that the Lord of the Church blesses his ministry at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. This school has been a leader in educational ministry since 1903, and I pray it continues to be a brilliant beacon for the Gospel.”

Mr. Al Greschner
For 35 years, Wisco students have been blessed to have Al Greschner as their teacher or coach. Greschner joined WLHS in 1987 and over the years has taught physics, conceptual physics, freshman science, small engines, and Corinthians. He also dedicated decades to coaching wrestling and freshman football.
“For me, it’s always been about the kids. I enjoy seeing them grow up and mature into young
Christian men and women during their years at
Wisco,” says Greschner. “I approach every class and every practice or game by sharing God’s word and applying it to life. The kids and I connect over that every day and that’s something I’m going to miss.”

A Beloved Teacher
Former students share their memories of Al Greschner and the impact he had on their lives.
Lindsey Dausel (‘00)
“Mr. Greschner is the reason I am a teacher today. He continually told me while I was in physics that I should be a teacher. I was so set against being a teacher when I was in high school. Now I couldn’t imagine not teaching!”
Timothy Meitner (‘00)
“Whether out on the football field, battling on the wrestling mats, or in the classroom, Al always stressed Christian leadership. He found a way to incorporate humor, meaningful messages and, most importantly, Christ. It was an honor to be his student and one of his athletes for four years.”
Reed Goede (‘14)
“From homeroom to the football field, he had pure passion and intensity the whole time. That passion is because Mr. Greschner cared about every student and player he was in contact with. He is truly a one-of-a-kind teacher.”
Richard Ruth (‘88)
“I had Mr. Greschner for physics and I still vividly remember his passion for teaching. He brought so much positive and passionate energy to the classroom. You couldn’t help but be excited about what he was teaching. What a gem that man is and such a model Christian teacher and servant. Bless you for all you’ve done for us Mr. Greschner.”
Tracy Garon (‘05)
“He was a caring teacher who was always willing to listen, and a passionate teacher who wanted you to learn. He is one of those guys who when I’ve been back to Wisco always says hello, and we chat about all of it. He had such an impact on my life and so many others’ lives with his Christ-driven attitude and love for his Savior.”
