LOVE (from An Elizabethan Summer) Stephen Chatman (b. 1950)
Come away, sweet love, and play thee, lest grief and care betray thee. Fa la la…
Leave off this sad lamenting and take thy heart’s contenting. The nymphs to sport invite thee and running in and out delights thee.
- Anonymous (c. 1600)
Ola Gjeilo (b. 1978)
Bright the sun in bluest shining; Night grows longer, darkness deeper, Summer spreads in valleys greenly. Cold winds howl when comes the Winter. Lovers sing their new-found pining; White of snow by moonlight tempered, Time itself slows down to greet me. Bearing hope for Spring to enter.
Autumn air comes crisp and blowing Flowers bloom with showers falling, Leaves from green to golden turning; All the world reveals its yearning; Hearts all full, and eyes all glowing Nature sings – I hear her calling: Gather round the hearth-fire burning. Round and round the seasons turning.
- Charles Anthony Silvestri
BLACKBIRD
Grace Hennen, piano Mariska Gilbertson, flute
and
Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly;
All your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise. Blackbird, fly into the light of a dark, black night.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these sunken eyes and learn to see; All your life, you were only waiting for this moment to be free. Blackbird, fly into the light of a dark, black night.
Addie Gumm, whistler
Come listen in the silence of the moment before rain comes down. There’s a deep sigh in the quiet of the forest and the tall tree’s crown.
Now hold me. Will you take the time to hold me and embrace the chill? Or miss me. Will you take the time to miss me when the earth stands still?
‘Cause there’s no use running ‘cause the storm’s still coming and you’ve been running for so many years.
Come listen in the silence of the moment before shadows fall, Feel the tremor of your heartbeat matching heartbeat as we both dissolve.
Now hold me. Will you take the time to hold me and embrace the chill? Or miss me. Will you take the time to miss me when the earth stands still?
‘Cause there’s no use running ‘cause the storm’s still coming and you’ve been running for so many years.
So stay with me, held in my arms. Like branches of a tree, they’ll shelter you for many years.
We are met for a Concert of modern invention. To tickle the Ear is our present intention.
The audience are seated expecting to be treated with a piece of the Best, with a piece of the Best. And since we all agree to set the tune on E, the Author’s darling Key he prefers to the rest.
Let the bass take the lead and firmly proceed till the parts are agreed to fuge away.
Let the tenor succeed and follow the lead till the parts are agreed to fuge away.
Let the counter inspire the rest of the choir inflam’d with desire to fuge away
Let the treble in the rear no longer forbear, but expressly declare for a fuge away.
Then change to brisker time and up the Ladder climb, and down again; Then mount the second time and end the strain.
Then change the Key to pensive tones and slow in Treble time the Notes exceeding low, Keep down a while then rise by slow degrees; the Process will surely not fail to please.
Thro’ Common and Treble we jointly have run, we’ll give you their Essence compounded in one.
Altho’ we are strongly attached to the rest, six-four is the movement that pleases us best.
Six-four is the movement that pleases us best.
And now we address you as Friends to the cause; performers are modest and write their own laws.
Altho’ we are sanguine and clap at the Bars, ‘tis part of the hearers to clap their Applause.
‘Tis part of the hearers to clap their Applause.

A mighty fortress is our God,
Martin Luther (1483-1546)
arr. W. B. Olds (1874-1948)
Did we in our own strength confide, A bulwark never failing;
Our striving would be losing, Our helper He, amid the flood
Were not the right man on our side, Of mortal ills prevailing.
The man of God’s own choosing. For still our ancient foe
Dost ask who that may be?
Doth seek to work us woe; Christ Jesus, it is He, His craft and pow’r are great; Lord Sabaoth His name, And armed with cruel hate,
From age to age the same, On earth is not His equal.
And He must win the battle.
- Martin Luther, trans. Frederick H. Hedge
CAN
My life flows on in endless song;
Above earth’s lamentation.
I hear the sweet, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.
arr. Eric Nelson (b. 1959)
What though my joys and comforts die?
My Savior still is living.
What though the shadows gather ‘round?
A new song Christ is giving. Through all the tumult and the strife, No storm can shake my inmost calm I hear the music ringing;
While to that Rock I’m clinging. It finds an echo in my soul.
Since Love commands both heav’n and earth, How can I keep from singing? How can I keep from singing?
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart, a fountain ever springing! All things are mine since I am His! How can I keep from singing?
- Robert Lowry
Wake, awake, for night is flying!
Hear Thy praise, O Lord, ascending The watchmen on the heights are crying, From tongues of men and angels blending Awake, Jerusalem, arise! With harps and lute and psaltery, Midnight’s solemn hour is tolling, By Thy pearly gates in wonder His chariot wheels are nearer rolling; We stand and swell the voice of thunder, He comes, prepare, ye virgins wise, In bursts of choral melody; Rise up with willing feet.
No vision ever brought, no ear hath ever caught Go forth the bridegroom meet, Hallelujah! Such bliss and joy: Bear through the night
We raise the song, we swell the throng. Your well-trimmed light, To praise thee ages all along. Hallelujah! Speed forth to join the marriage rite.
- Philipp Nicolai
O Love, that will not let me go, O Love, I rest my weary soul in thee; I give thee back the life I owe, that in thy ocean depths its flow may richer, fuller be.
O Joy, that seeks me through the pain, O I cannot close my heart to thee; I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain that morn shall tearless be.
Megan Lippert, piano
In the Lord, my soul’s been anchored, in the Lord.
Before I’d stay in hell one day, my soul’s been anchored in the Lord. I’d sing an’ pray myself away. My soul’s been anchored in the Lord.
Goin’ shout an’ pray an’ never stop, my soul’s been anchored in the Lord. Until I reach the mountaintop. My soul’s been anchored in the Lord.
Do you love Him? Oh yes! Do you love Him? Hallelujah!
Do you love Him? Oh yes! God almighty.
Are you anchored? Oh yes! Yes, I’m anchored, My soul’s been anchored in the Lord.
Yes, will you serve Him? Oh yes!
Will you serve Him? Hallelujah!
Will you serve Him? Oh yes! God almighty.
Are you anchored? Oh yes! Yes, I’m anchored, My soul’s been anchored in the Lord, Hallelujah!
Will you praise Him? Oh yes!
Will you praise Him? Hallelujah!
Will you praise Him? Oh yes! God almighty!
Are you anchored? Yes, I’m anchored.
Lord, I’m anchored. Oh yes!
Lord, I love You. Oh yes!
Yes, I’ll serve You. Oh yes!
Lord, I’ll praise You. Oh yes! Hallelujah!
My soul’s been anchored in the Lord, God almighty, My soul’s been anchored in the Lord. - Traditional Spiritual

To conduct Wisconsin Lutheran College’s Concert Band in concert is a privilege undergraduate students earn by passing the Advanced Instrumental Conducting course (MUS 351). A distinguishing feature of WLC’s Music Education program is that Music Education majors who pass the course are then invited to continue selecting, lesson planning, rehearsing, and performing their chosen piece with the Concert Band at every concert up until they leave for student teaching. WLC Music Education (Instrumental) students enter into their student teaching experiences having conducted roughly six concert cycles, whereas most music education students at other state and private colleges conduct just one. Students who participate in this practical exercise are adjudicated by Prof. Hubert at every rehearsal to help them improve for their next opportunity at the podium.
