This year’s cover painting, “Sunflower Bouquets,” by award-winning artist Phyllis Verhyen conveys the uniqueness of the Appleton Downtown Farm Market in plein air style. Phyllis and her husband Dennis are from Appleton and reside in Greenleaf, Wisconsin.

Phyllis Verhyen graduated from the Kewaunee Academy of Fine Art in 2008 after three and half years of study. Now a professional artist, her career is promoted by a high level of excellence in drawing and painting. The artist has completed a series of six paintings of different Appleton Market scenes. This tiny operation specializes in Freedom Ranger pastured chickens, which are bred for flavor. The chickens range from dawn to dusk and are brought in to keep them safe at night. These are strong, healthy birds that know how to forage and need no medication to grow. In addition to pasture, they are fed a mixture of grains purchased from the local feed mill that is light on corn/soy. Viola’s also has pastured pork sold by the 30 lb. box. In addition to meat, an assortment of vegetables is offered in season, as are red fall raspberries.

We hold a Wisconsin Mobile Retail Food Establishment License, which allows us to sell individual package cuts and 1/4, 1/2 and whole carcass of rotational grazed grass-fed and grass-finished Angus beef cattle. We offer cage-free brown eggs and free-range chickens, as well as free range turkeys and geese by request. Starting in 2016, we will offer a limited amount of summer vegetable CSA shares and honey.

Building a Safe Habitat for Monarchs Recently, the plight of the monarch butterfly has attracted a lot of attention. Though their population seems to fluctuate, their numbers have steadily declined over the years. The decrease in their numbers can be attributed to a range of factors—the decline of milkweed (the host plant for the larval stage), pesticide use (especially neonicotinoids), deforestation in Mexico, as well as worldwide weather changes. Regional efforts, such as a new program from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) called the Monarch Butterfly Habitat Development Program, may help.

New England aster (Aster novae-angliae).

There’s a connection between monarch butterflies and sustainable farming methods, though you might not notice it at first. I live on a sixth-generation certified organic farm near Waupun. In order to remain certified, we fill out paperwork and are inspected yearly. Along with conserving soil and water, we are expected to actively promote biological diversity. Practices like keeping field edges a little wild, preserving riparian zones, and planting native plants are some of the practices our organic certifier looks for.

Create a garden that’s free of pesticides and full of native plants. Milkweed is the only plant on which monarchs will lay their eggs, and on which the caterpillars will feed. There are a number of different Wisconsin native milkweeds, such as common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca), swamp milkweed (A. incarnata), butterfly weed (A. tuberosa) and the less common whorled milkweed At Stone Silo Prairie Gardens in De Pere, a monarch sips nectar from a compass plant. This local business is a great source for (A. verticillata). For adult native plants. butterflies, good nectar plants include coneflowers (Echinacea Since our farm borders the Horicon National Wildlife ssp), blazing stars (Liatris ssp), bee balm (Monarda ssp), Refuge we have adjoining natural areas. Also, a creek runs goldenrods (Solidago ssp) and fall blooming asters such as through our farm, and this wildlife corridor is actively used by deer, turkeys, muskrats and sand hill cranes. Our field edges are full of milkweed, asters, goldenrod, and other plants that are important to monarchs.

Of course, many other farmers, sustainable as well as certified organic, are doing the same. I know there are a lot of unsung farmer-heroes out there, protecting habitat for monarchs as well as other insects. Please support them as you are able, with the aid of the Atlas.
