ABOUT US

Our Mission

Our mission is to support a sustainable agricultural economy in Southeastern Wisconsin by connecting residents in the region with food and agricultural products that are produced, processed, and sold locally.

Ways to Support Locally Grown: • • • • • • • • •

Shop the local farmers market Attend farm dinners and events Join a CSA (What is a CSA? See page 6) Shop grocery stores that feature local products Fill holiday baskets with local goods for your loved ones Talk to friends and family about why you support locally grown Support organizations that advocate for local farms and businesses Eat at restaurants, cafes, and bakeries that source local ingredients Teach children the importance of knowing where their food comes from

5

Farm Fresh Facts What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)? CSA is a way to buy local food directly from a farmer. You purchase a “share” and become a farm “member.” You then receive a box of vegetables or other farm products regularly throughout the growing season. CSA is much more than just a weekly delivery of food. CSA is a powerful investment in your health, community, and local economy. It’s a partnership between farms and consumers that keeps independent businesses thriving, helps families eat seasonal, local produce, and charges farmers and consumers with the responsibility of building a strong, equitable food system. Find out more about CSA in Wisconsin atcsacoalition.org. Wisconsin is a leader in organic agriculture, ranking second behind California in the total number of certified organic farms. Most American farmers receive only 14.8 cents of every dollar that consumers spend on food at home and away from home. At farmers markets, farmers head home with upwards of 90 cents on the dollar. Wisconsin agriculture provides 413,500 jobs or 11.9% of the state’s employment. 3 out of 4 crops producing fruit or seeds for humans rely on pollinators, like bees, for production. Sustainable agriculture reduces risk to pollinators by diversiving the agricultural landscape and making use of ecological processes as a part of food production. More than 85% of farmers market vendors traveled fewer than 50 miles to sell at a farmers markets. Compare that to most supermarkets where 7-14 days can go by between the time produce is picked and when it becomes available to shoppers. In that time, fruits and vegetables travel, on average, more than 1,200 miles before reaching grocery store shelves.

LOCAL FOOD ESSAY Every Thursday afternoon, May to October, I have a soul-satisfying reunion, I find out what’s on tap, and often I get a recipe or a cooking tip, before bringing home a big bag of potential. I’m grateful for the deep knowledge My People have of soil science, insect life cycles, ripeness and readiness, to name but a few of their skills. In short, My People make me happy.

In your hands is the publication that shows you the paths to many of the miracles in our part of the state. Here’s to your farm

adventures in 2019!

Jane Hamilton is a novelist, teacher, and farm-hand who lives in Rochester, Wisconsin.

“The olive oil woman, the cheese guy, the bread baker, the goat soap friend, the gorgeous organic veggie personality— I love them all.”

Here’s how it feels from the grower’s side of the table. When we have invited

our customers to events on the farm, and when they visit the barn to buy our apples, many of them feel a kind of homecoming.

Over something as simple as a transaction for five pounds of apples, the customers radiate appreciation for the place and our work. Maybe they’ve been showing up in autumn since they were children or maybe the place is new to them, but they are delighted to be in a setting that seems out of time. The natural world is before them, the fruit right out there on the trees. Sometimes the sun is shining and other times it’s raining. Either way, it’s beautiful. We, the growers, are their people. They, the customer, are our people. It works both ways! We’re together, interdependent, in the miracle of good food.
